When it comes to red carpet looks, actress Kerry Washington has always turned heads. However, at the recent ABFF Honors ceremony, she turned heads while also paying homage to the late Whitney Houston, wearing one of her old dresses to the ceremony as a way to “honor Black excellence.”
The iconic red dress was first worn by Whitney Houston in 1996. On Jimmy Fallon, Washington explained how the dress had been archived by its original designer, Marc Bouwer, and it had not been worn in decades. Washington had apparently had her eye on it for awhile and had previously discussed the dress with her stylist, but had to wait for the right moment to honor [Houston].
She described the halter-style dress as “really special” and explaining that “when you get an award for excellence in the arts, you’ve gotta go to Black excellence.”
Washington also posted a short video on Instagram in which she asked “What’s cooler than wearing Whitney Houston’s dress?” before following it up with her singing the late songstress’s iconic “nothing” while twirling around and showing it off.
The fifth American Black Film Festival (ABFF) Honors ceremony, which took place in West Hollywood on March 5, recognizes achievements of film actors of African descent and honors films that stand out in their portrayal of Black experience. Washington was honored alongside Courtney B. Vance, Janelle Monáe, Macro’s Charles D. King, filmmaker Kasi Lemmons, the cast of “Eve’s Bayou,” and more.
After describing the dress on Jimmy Fallon, Washington also teased her upcoming autobiography.
Anybody who thought the vinyl resurgence was just a fad was mistaken: The industry has experienced a legitimate revival. As a result, music fans are interested in physical media in ways they may not have if the decades-old medium hasn’t made a comeback. That doesn’t mean everybody is listening to just their parents’ old music, though. That’s part of it, sure, thanks to rereleases that present classic albums in new ways. A vital part of the renewed vinyl wave, though, is new projects being released as records, of which there are plenty.
Whatever you might be into, each month brings a new slew of the best new vinyl releases that has something for everybody. Some stand out above the rest, naturally, so check out some of the best vinyl releases of February below.
Whitney Houston — Whitney Houston and Whitney (Reissues)
Whitney Houston’s music is as impactful now as it was when it debuted back in the mid-’80s, so there’s never a bad time for a vinyl reissue. Houston’s first two star-making LPs, Whitney Houston and Whitney, and among the pair is a handful of classic No. 1 singles, like “I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)” and “Saving All My Love For You.”
Gorillaz went all out for the vinyl editions of their latest album, Cracker Island. There are a number of them available in the band’s webstore, including some bold picture discs and a deluxe box set that comes with a CD, sticker sheet, poster, notebook, and more.
Neutral Milk Hotel — The Collected Works Of Neutral Milk Hotel
In The Aeroplane Over The Sea is the defining Neutral Milk Hotel work, but there’s a ton more worthwhile material beyond that, too. Now, it’s all been collected in a new box set… well sort of new: It was sold before, but only in the band’s online store. The collection includes a bunch of goodies, like a number of 10-inch and 7-inch records, as well as the band’s two albums (the other being On Avery Island) as gatefold LPs.
The Strokes’ early era was one to remember, and their new box set is a fantastic time capsule of it. It brings ten of the band’s singles from their first three albums — Is This It (2001), Room On Fire (2003), and First Impressions Of Earth (2006) — which means rare B-sides from the original releases.
Mötley Crüe — Crücial Crüe: The Studio Albums 1981-1989
Mötley Crüe went hard in the ’80s, dropping a number of platinum albums and iconic singles like “Girls, Girls, Girls” and “Dr. Feelgood.” That decade has been wrapped up in a fresh box set, which compiles all of the band’s peak-era albums into a five-album collection that truly encapsulates a heck of an era.
Depending on where you shop, you’ll find a different pressing of Paramore’s latest album. Target, for example, carries a lovely gold version, while Urban Outfitters has a coral edition of its own and Walmart is keeping it classic with a black pressing.
Naughty By Nature — 19 Naughty III (30th Anniversary Edition)
It’s been 30 years since Naughty By Nature dropped 19 Naughty III (fantastic name for a 1993 album, by the way), and now the group’s celebrating with a reissue. Notable are the six bonus tracks this new release comes with, including the previously unheard extended mix of “Hip Hop Hooray” and remixes from Pete Rock and The Beatnuts.
Kacey Musgraves — Same Trailer Different Park (VMP Reissue)
Kacey Musgraves is a crossover star now, but once upon a time, she had yet to carve out a space in the pop space and was dominating the country scene. Same Trailer Different Park was a striking debut album back in 2013, and for its tenth anniversary, Vinyl Me, Please pressed it on gorgeous “cactus green” vinyl, a fantastic visual complement to the album art’s greenery.
Pearl Jam still sounds as vital(ogy) as ever these days, and perhaps in a “time flies” example for some readers, the band’s 1998 album Yield turns 25 years old this year. Naturally, there’s a new vinyl reissue, and it’s pressed, as press materials note, “on 2LPs for the very first time on 180g translucent red & black hi-melt vinyl in a double gatefold, direct-to-board and die cut jacket.” It doesn’t ship until this summer, but we have a feeling that it will go fast.
Truth Is Where It’s At — A Gospel Truth Collection
Vinyl Me, Please is shining a light on The Gospel Truth Records, a 1972 gospel imprint on Stax Records, with a new box set. The release highlights a number of releases from a number of artists: The Rance Allen Group by The Rance Allen Group, Jesus People by Maceo Woods and The Christian Tabernacle Concert Choir, A Tribute to Mahalia Jackson by Louise McCord, Whatever Happened To Love by Clarence Smith, The Gospel Artistics by The Gospel Artistics, and Blue Aquarius by Blue Aquarius.
SZA’s newest album SOS tied Whitney Houston’s record for the longest-running R&B album at Billboard‘s No. 1 spot. Moreover, SOS just accomplished seven weeks atop their 200 album chart, which Houston did with her 1987 sophomore album, Whitney. While that album was the first R&B by a woman to reach the top spot, the new generation also pushed boundaries.
Furthermore, SOS is the longest-running No. 1 album by a woman since Adele’s 25 in 2016. Additionally, it’s the first album to spend at least seven weeks straight on the charts since Disney’s Encanto soundtrack in March of 2022. Moreover, the last R&B or hip-hop album to do so was Drake’s 2018 album Views, which spent 13 non-nonsecutive weeks at No. 1.
Overall, the TDE artist’s success is nothing short of astounding. For example, the new album garnered over 400 million streams for the biggest first-week album streams ever in R&B. Also, it’s the second-biggest streaming week of all time for a female artist. With dominant singles like “Kill Bill,” we’re sure that the numbers will keep stacking.
However, it’s not all the 33-year-old has to look forward to. Moreover, her first arena tour starts soon, kicking off in Columbus, Ohio in late February. Later, SZA’s scheduled for 17 shows in total, ending in March in Los Angeles.
Meanwhile, SZA also recently teased a collaboration with Miley Cyrus, who just dropped the much-anticipated single “Flowers.” Cyrus also shouted her out for her success, and said she’s looking forward to linking up. Given similar praise from the likes of Taylor Swift and many more, the “Gone Girl” star is dominating the industry. What’s more is that her song even got actress Vivica Fox to want to star in another Kill Bill.
Still, what did you think of SZA and Whitney Houston having some of the longest-running No. 1 albums in R&B? Whatever the case, let us know in the comments down below. Also, as always, stay tuned to HNHH for the latest news on SZA, chart numbers, and amazing voices in R&B.
The 65th Annual Grammy Awards are just weeks away. Many of the biggest names in music gather for a week full of events across Los Angeles, California ending with the coveted ceremony on February 5, 2023, hosted by Trevor Noah. However, since the tragic death of the late singer Whitney Houston prior to the 2012 ceremony, a dark cloud has continued to hover over the event.
The late singer’s recent biopic, I Wanna Dance With Somebody starring Naomi Ackie, authorized by Houston’s estate, was a surface examination of the complexities of her life and career. Now, the estate has launched the Whitney Houston Hotel to dive even deeper look into her illustrious career, life, and her impact that was left out of the biopic. Noted as one of music’s greatest voices, the week-long event will center Houston’s music.
Partnering with Primary Wave and presented by Sony, the Whitney Houston Hotel, held inside the W Hotel in Hollywood, will host a week full of events, including live musical performances by Michelle Williams (of Destiny’s Child), Amber Riley, Baby Tate, Teddy Swims, Coco Jones, Georgia Ku, Kiana Ledé, Natalie Jane, a memorabilia exhibit, a pop-up shop, and more. See below for the full schedule.
While fans of the late Houston see this as another gross exploitation to capitalize on her death at the industry event, the family may be using this as an opportunity to change the narrative around it. However, considering the location and cause of her death, the framing presents as problematic at best. As distasteful as comedian Jerrod Carmichael’s joke about Houston’s accidental drowning at the Beverly Hilton, it is just a recent reminder of how the industry has continued to gloss over her troubling end.

The new Whitney Houston biopic I Wanna Dance With Somebody is in theaters. With the film hitting screens, some close to Houston are remembering moments with her. One of which is Clive Davis, the film’s co-producer, who detailed to Page Six that he was shocked to hear about her death and was with her just days before.
Davis said, “it never occurred to me” that Houston would die 48 hours after he was with her and was currently working on her sobriety.
“She was showing me what she had done in rehab,” Davis said. “How she had given up smoking, how she had cleared her throat of nicotine. And she was wanting to start going in the studio….I never would have thought 48 hours before her death, that she would pass, that there would be that horrendous, premature end to her life.
“She was making a valiant attempt during that period to give up drugs and rehabilitate herself.”
Houston was found dead in a Beverly Hilton suite in February 2012. She was noted to have died accidentally by drowning and the combination of “effects of atherosclerotic heart disease and cocaine use.”
Clive Davis is opening up about Whitney Houston’s last days. The infamous music exec recently revealed that he was shocked by Whitney’s 2012 death. Davis says Houston made a “valiant attempt” to give up drugs before she died.
“I was with her 48 hours before her death,” Davis told Page Six. “It never occurred to me [that she would die two days later].” The record producer signed Houston in 1983 when she was just 20 years old. He continued, “She was showing me what she had done in rehab. How she had given up smoking. She had cleared her throat of nicotine. And she was wanting to start going in the studio. I never would have thought 48 hours before her death, that she would pass, that there would be that horrendous, premature end to her life.”
The 90-year old legend added that Whitney was looking forward to the next chapter of her life. “She was making a valiant attempt during that period to give up drugs and rehabilitate herself.” Whitney was found unconscious in a Beverly Hilton suite, submerged in the bathtub on Feb. 11, 2012.
The Los Angeles Coroner’s Office claimed that her death was caused by effects of atherosclerotic heart disease and cocaine use.” Additional drugs were also found in the late singer’s system at the time of her death, including Benadryl, Xanax, and cannabis. Davis says he knew from the first time he met Whitney that she was a star. “That voice that was the finest of her generation, and is up there with the two or three best of all time. That is what the film does.”
His interview comes amid the premiere of the Whitney Houston biopic, I Wanna Dance with Somebody,” which he co-produced. Catch the Kasi Clemmons directed film in theaters now.
