Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan’s Next Film Project Set for Warner Bros After Bidding War

Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan’s Next Film Project Set for Warner Bros After Bidding War

So it’s set: Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan’s mystery genre project has a home, and Warner Bros is the studio that won after a hotly contested bidding war.

Variety broke the news that the secretive film project, which will star Jordan, shall be directed by Coogler. Legacy studios such as Sony and Universal were supposedly bidding against Warner Bros.

Even before Variety broke the news, Deadline may have unearthed some intel that the alleged genre project is a vampire film because on the bottom of the Deadline piece, a tag read, “Vampire Movie Auction.” Interesting. Maybe it’s a bit of misdirection, but time will tell …

All the trades are weighing in, and The Hollywood Reporter wrote, “Details are being kept hush-hush, but according to sources, the project has been described as a period thriller (some have said it takes place in the Jim Crow-era South) involving the undead. Some sources have said it also contains anime influences — Jordan is known to be a massive fan — but it is unclear how those influences are weaved into the project.”

Before Warner Bros. locked down the rights, reportedly, Coogler will be jumpstarting production this summer. That’s considered a fast track in today’s film climate.

Again, Coogler will be directing and producing with Zinzi Coogler, his wife and producing partner, along with Sev Ohanian. Rebecca Cho of Proximity Media is an executive producer. Cooler and Jordan have worked together on Black Panther, the Creed franchise, and Coogler’s critically acclaimed feature debut, Fruitvale Station, where Jordan starred.

These are exciting times for Coogler and Jordan. Hopefully, we’ll know exactly what this project is all about soon enough.

Ice Cube Says He’s “Never” Giving Up On “Friday 4”

Ice Cube says that he’s “never” giving up on a fourth film in the Friday franchise. Speaking with TMZ outside of Dash Radio, the legendary rapper said that despite his commitment, he won’t take legal action.

“You got to use the same IP. So, you can’t call it Saturday without using Craig and Day Day,” he explained.

As for whether he’d file a lawsuit to get the rights, he responded: “No, ain’t gonna sue nobody.”

Cube has been outspoken about his difficulties in getting a fourth Friday film made for quite some time. Speaking about the idea during a recent appearance on Mike Tyson’s Hotboxin’ podcast, Cube called on the studio to “do the right thing.”

“They need to do the right thing, get it to us, let us turn it into more money, and make the fans happy,” Cube said at the time. “We can do a lot with it.”

Ice Cube has also previously said that Warner Brothers rejected two separate scripts for the potential film.

“I’m trying to get it out of Warner Brothers, they don’t believe in the culture man,” Cube told hosts N.O.R.E. and DJ EFN on Drink Champs. “I had two scripts. I wrote one; it was the shit. They was like, ‘Yo, we don’t want Craig and Day-Day in jail, ’cause Craig and Day-Day went to jail for selling weed before it was legal!”

Cube released the first Friday film back in 1995. He later added on two sequels, Next Friday and Friday After Next, in 2000 and 2002 respectively.

In a shocking turn of events, Warner Bros announced on Tuesday (August 2) the decision to shelve the release of the anticipated feature film adaptation of the DC Comics superhero Batgirl starring In The Height’s actress Leslie Grace. Greenlit in 2021, the company’s decision reveals the film will not receive a theatrical or streaming platform release as the new corporate regime at Warner Bros. Discovery pivot in a new direction. Batgirl was set to be Grace, 27, breakout role.

Shortly after news of the axed film surfaced, Grace would take to social media to respond to the news and thank the fans for all of their support since it was announced she’d be starring in the title role in 2021.

“Querida familia! On the heels of the recent news about our movie ‘Batgirl,’ she wrote in a Instagram post with photos of her in the Batgirl costume on set. “I am proud of the love, hard work and intention all of our incredible cast and tireless crew put into this film over 7 months in Scotland. I feel blessed to have worked among absolute greats and forged relationships for a lifetime in the process! To every Batgirl fan – THANK YOU for the love and belief, allowing me to take on the cape and become, as Babs said best, “my own damn hero!” #Batgirl for life! 🦇

Batgirl director, Adil El Arbi, would share his thoughts on the surprising cancellation of the film on Tuesday, stating, “We are saddened and shocked by the news. We still can’t believe it. As directors, it is critical that our work be shown to audiences, and while the film was far from finished, we wish that fans all over the world would have had the opportunity to see and embrace the final film themselves. Our amazing cast and crew did a tremendous job and worked so hard to bring Batgirl to life. We are forever grateful to have been part of that team. In any case, as huge fans of Batman since we were little kids, it was a privilege and an honour to have been part of the DCEU [DC Extended Universe], even if it was for a brief moment. Batgirl for life.”

News of the film’s shelving was met with a wide variety of speculations such as Grace’s acting performance coming into question. However, Warner Bros Discovery quickly extinguished the rumor with a released statement praising the actress performance on the $90 million dollar production.

In a message released on Tuesday, Warner Bros said, “Leslie Grace is an incredibly talented actor and this decision is not a reflection of her performance.”

Fans of the actress and comic have begun a #SaveBatgirl social media campaign in hopes of the studio’s reconsideration of the film’s release.
