USHER Returns To Atlanta, Receives Phoenix Award & A Spot On Black Music And Entertainment Walk Of Fame

USHER has to be on cloud nine right about now. The legendary R&B singer put on the performance of a lifetime at Super Bowl LVIII this past weekend in Las Vegas. He was not alone during the show, as Ludacris, Lil’ Jon, Alicia Keys, and more, assisted him. It made it all more special and this one will be remembered for a long time. USHER also put a ring on his longtime girlfriend, Jennifer Goicoechea, not too long after the big game. But, the wins just keep on coming for the multi-talent. Just yesterday, USHER had to catch a flight back to Atlanta, Georgia, to receive some pretty remarkable awards.

Atlanta is one of the many places that he has roots in, but this is where USHER got his career off the floor. So, it was only right that the city recognized him for the Phoenix Award. According to WSB-TV 2 Atlanta, it is a prestigious honor that recognizes an individual or group for their outstanding service to the city. USHER gave an impassioned speech to the crowd, giving props to the city for helping him find his way in life.

“Atlanta is a city of belief. Atlanta is a city that allowed me to be that Phoenix to rise. It is a city that has allowed me to have the tenacity to go out and share this culture that I found when I was here.” On top of that, the Black Entertainment and Music Walk of Fame unveiled his spot three years after he was a part of the inaugural class. Mayor Andre Dickens, who was in attendance, thanked USHER for representing Atlanta with pride at the Super Bowl. “The whole world got to see that Usher brought the world to the A.” The final cherry on top was that Fulton County decided to name February 14 “Usher Day.” The man is back everybody.

What are your thoughts on USHER getting his flowers from the city of Atlanta? Do you think he should have received the Phoenix Award sooner? Was his Super Bowl performance a top 10 Halftime Show of all time? Is COMING HOME one of his best albums ever, why or why not? What songs have you added to your rotation? We would like to hear what you have to say, so be sure to tell us in the comments below. Additionally, keep it locked in with HNHH for all of the latest news surrounding USHER. Who Is Usher’s Wife, Jennifer Goicoechea? A Look At Big-Wig Music Exec

Usher has had an incredibly blessed year so far, with 2024 bringing a landmark Super Bowl halftime performance, a brand new album release, and even a long-awaited marriage ceremony for the artist. Usher wed his long-time girlfriend Jennifer Goicoechea on Super Bowl Sunday, with an outdoor ceremony attended by the Grammy Award-winner’s mother, Jonetta Patton. Unlike many chart-topping public figures, who opt to engage in romance with other household names, Usher’s wife is a music industry executive who generally tends to remain behind the camera and out of the spotlight.

Despite being relatively unknown by the public, Goicoechea has truly stolen Usher’s heart and currently resides in Las Vegas, Nevada, with the hit-maker and their two children. Die-hard fans have many questions regarding how the happy couple met, when they became engaged, and more. Here’s everything we know about Jennifer Goicoechea.

Jennifer Goicoechea Was Born And Raised In Miami

Jennifer Goicoechea hails from the Sunshine State of Florida, where she attended Full Sail University in Winter Park. Goicoechea’s mother was the director of operations at ACT Productions, prompting the young woman to study recording arts and eventually shadow her mother at the media production company. Goicoechea got her start in the industry by serving as an assistant to Ciara for a time before eventually opening her own private firm, Boogs’N’Effect Management.

Goicoechea earned recognition as one of Billboard’s R&B/Hip-Hop Power Players in both 2020 and 2021, following her appointment as the senior vice president of A&R at Epic Records. Though the details of how the exec developed a close relationship with Usher remain elusive, social media posts dating back to 2016 depict the pair interacting at music and social networking events.

The Romance Was Confirmed In 2019

Though many fans assumed Usher was intimate with the mysterious music executive beforehand, Usher and Jennifer Goicoechea seemingly confirmed their romance during a 40th birthday bash for producer Keith Thomas in 2019. Months later, the couple kissed at the Hollywood Bowl, and they subsequently announced via Good Morning America that they were expecting their first child in 2020.

Their first daughter, Sovereign Bo Raymond, was born on September 24, 2020. Not wasting any time, Usher and Goicoechea welcomed a second child on September 29 the following year, a boy named Sire Castrello Raymond. Usher also has two boys that he shares with his ex-wife Tameka Foster, causing the artist to reflect in recent years on the joy and blessing of growing a blended family together.

The Pair Seem To Have Excellent Chemistry

Though Jennifer Goicoechea may not be a household name lighting up the stage wherever she goes, the music industry executive seems to be a perfect fit for Usher. In a November 2023 interview, Usher offered some loving words for his soon-to-be-wife, stating, “I have an amazing partner, a support system. We have any amazing dynamic between our relationship where I’m able to be passionate still about what I do and have an incredible partner to work through some of the harder times as a young man dealing with children and dealing with the dynamic of how you communicate with them.”

The couple finally tied the knot at Terrace Gazebo on Super Bowl Sunday, the very same day that Usher took to the stage at Allegiant Stadium for his groundbreaking half-time performance.

How Many Grammys Does Usher Have?

Usher’s recent Super Bowl half-time performance reinvigorated fans’ love for the prolific singer-songwriter and reminded audiences why he’s been a fixture in the music industry since the late 1990s. As one of the most influential figures in contemporary R&B and pop, Usher’s career has been defined by his soulful vocals, dynamic stage presence, and commitment to musical innovation. He has even been called the king of R&B.

Beyond his commercial success, Usher’s talents have earned him recognition at the highest levels of the music industry, including the prestigious Grammy Awards. With an illustrious career spanning decades, Usher has taken home eigth Grammy wins, with just under two dozen nominations. Here’s a look into the singer’s career and Grammy wins.

Usher Won His First Grammy In 2001

Per the official Grammy Awards website, Usher’s first ever Academy Award was for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance on the track “U Remind Me.” Usher had previously received two nominations at the 40th and 41st Grammy’s, respectively, for his performance on the tracks “You Make Me Wanna” and “My Way.” “U Remind Me” is a story-telling ballad that follows a man who meets the perfect woman but ultimately fails to court her because she looks too similar to his ex-girlfriend.

Though the track brought in Usher’s very first Grammy Award win, it was far from his last. Since 2001’s 44th Grammy Awards, Usher has become a fixture of the event, often performing live when he isn’t too busy taking the stage with an acceptance speech. In fact, Usher brought home back-to-back wins with the release of the track “U Don’t Have To Call” just a year later.

2005 Saw Usher’s Biggest Year At The Grammy’s Yet

After not receiving any nominations at the 46th Grammys, Usher had a massive year during 2005’s 47th Grammy Awards. During the show, Usher took the stage alongside James Brown and performed hit tracks such as “Get Up — I Feel Like Being Like A Sex Machine” and “Caught Up.” During the event, Usher brought home three Grammy wins out of eight nominations, including Best Rap/Sung Collaboration for the track “Yeah!” with Lil Jon and Ludacris.

The event marked the first time in Usher’s career that he won multiple Academy Awards in a single evening and remains the most at-once nominations he has received. The singer would go on to receive several nominations in the years following the 47th Grammys, though he didn’t take home another trophy until the 53rd celebration in 2011.

His Most Recent Win Was In 2013

Usher’s eighth and most recent Grammy win was for Best R&B Performance in 2013. Usher took home the award for his hit track “Climax,” which, despite its suggestive title, is a slow, meditative jam focusing on long-term relationships’ complications. By this point, both the Academy and audiences at large had abundantly recognized Usher as a certified hit-maker, known for producing radio-friendly tunes that were equally enjoyable in clubs and at home.

Since 2013, Usher has amassed another five Grammy nominations despite slowing his musical output to focus on many behind-the-scenes roles within the music industry. Yet, the beloved singer recently dropped an album just before his Super Bowl performance, so next year could see the long-awaited return of Usher on the Grammy’s stage.

Justin Bieber Did Not Perform At Super Bowl LVIII With USHER, Here’s Why

The Super Bowl Halftime Show always produces some interesting story angles every year. In just two days since the performance, fans already have so much to say about it. In fact, fans are already trying/hoping to get certain artists to hit centerfield when the game heads to New Orleans, Louisiana in 2025. Of course, Super Bowl LVIII’s (58) headlining act was Texas-born R&B legend USHER. The show was widely praised due to its impressive choreography, singing, and overall energy. Another reason why it was widely loved could be attributed to the guest acts. Lil’ Jon, Ludacris, H.E.R., and Alicia Keys were just a few who joined USHER. However, one person who was missing in action was Justin Bieber.

The Canadian pop superstar was a highly-anticipated Super Bowl performer. He and USHER have a handful of tracks together as well. Bieber recruited his mentor for “Somebody to Love” and its remix, “First Dance,” and “Peaches (Remix).” So, why did we not get to see some nostalgic songs be put on display for the millions of people watching?

Well, it was as simple as Justin saying “he wasn’t feeling it.” That comes from The Neighborhood Talk and sources close to Page Six. However, there is no ill will whatsoever. In fact, Biebs went on IG to congratulate his pal for show will he sat in the stands watching it all unfold, according to Uproxx. “LOVE YOU MY BROTHER. NOONE CAN SING AND DANCE THE WAY YOU DO. LOVE YOU FROM THE DEPTHS OF MY HEART. BROUGHT THE ‘A’ TO THE WORLD, ONLY YOU BABYYYYYY 😘” It is also worth mentioning Bieber did have health complications not too long ago. But, it is good to see the brotherly love.

What are your thoughts on Justin Bieber’s reason for not performing with USHER at Super Bowl LVIII? Do you think he will get the chance to do it at some point in his career again? R&B Is Back Under The Mainstream Light, Right Where It Belongs

Twenty years ago, Usher’s fourth album Confessions assumed the crown of 2004’s best-selling album in the US thanks to nearly 8 million copies sold nationwide. It sold more than double the release that came in second place, Norah Jones’ Feels Like Home. In addition to the immense commercial acclaim it received in 2004, Confessions remained atop the conversation around modern-day R&B in the years that followed. It’s ever-present on “Best Albums Of All-Time” lists while continuing to be mentioned as a body of work that influenced some of today’s biggest artists. Two decades and a diamond certification later, Usher’s Confessions, among his other work, finds itself in the middle of an R&B resurgence.

For roughly 13 minutes, Usher danced and skated all over the Super Bowl LVIII stage as he cruised impressively through performances of “Caught Up,” “My Boo,” “Confessions Pt. II,” “Burn,” “Yeah!” and more. It marked the second Sunday in a row that R&B was under the spotlight in front of a national audience that extended globally. The Sunday before Super Bowl LVIII was the 66th Annual Grammy Awards where Victoria Monét, who was tied for the second-most nominations, walked away with the Best New Artist award in addition to wins in the Best R&B Album and Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical categories. SZA, the most-nominated artist of the awards, secured three wins in Best Progressive R&B Album, Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, and Best R&B Song. Lastly, Coco Jones tasted victory during her first Grammy award show as a nominated as she walked away with a Best R&B Performance trophy. Together, the trio are undeniable representatives of artists ready to lead R&B into and through its next era – one that brings it back to mainstream glory.

The forecast for the future of R&B doesn’t begin with these award wins, as it’s been clear for a while now that the genre’s resurgence was in order. I’d even argue these awards aren’t the validation of an artist’s work, but rather, the celebration of what was already validated. A loss, or even the failure to get nominated, doesn’t nullify its quality or impact. Last fall, Spotify reported a 25% increase in streams of R&B records over the past year, making it one of the platforms’ fastest-growing genres. In recent years, the sound that many called dead progressed into one that could now take centerstage during both music’s and sport’s biggest nights. As a result, its artists have new hardware to place in their trophy cases, received a moment to celebrate and showcase the best of an already-cemented legacy, and found the inspiration to one day achieve the career-highlighting moments that were showcased during the first two weeks of this Black History Month.

When fans mentioned the “death” of R&B, it often pointed to the absence of pure vocalists and a lack of passion and yearning for love in the music. There’s been a shift in tone in R&B over the years since Usher’s Confessions, where some artists now prefer a middle finger and a goodbye over a good ol’ session of singing in the rain shirtless and begging for another chance from a scorned lover. Things were meant to change though as tradition is the repeated commemoration of the past and rarely does the past exist unaltered forever. An expiration date exists and awaits someone who dares to discover it and go against it in favor of starting their own. In the best cases, what once was is never forgotten, but instead, it’s used in the formula to create what’s next.

The best cases exist with Coco Jones’ “ICU,” SZA’s “Snooze,” and Victoria Monét’s “I’m The One” – songs that passionately call for love at each tick of the metronome and let the passion of their requests spill into their vocal runs. Look no further than H.E.R’s “Comfortable,” Lucky Daye’s “Over,” Chloe x Halle’s “Ungodly Hour,” Summer Walker’s “You Don’t Know Me,” Khamari’s “These Four Walls,” and Leon Thomas’ “Sneak” for additional examples from artists who made use of this ingredient. This helped to bring the best of modern-day R&B to the stage it deserved to be on.

The argument in defense of R&B’s state in the past was that the undeniable talent that fans and critics seek lay deep in the genre’s rolodex, overlooked by those who didn’t value the true beauty of the music. You simply had to sift through the mainstream clutter and do the work to find the artist(s) who represented the greatness of the genre. For fans who did this, their eventual discoveries became like precious gems to listeners who feared if and how their new beloved artist would later be comprised if they had too much light placed on them. In came posts expressing how “better” it was when said artist was below a certain popularity threshold. Sure, fans will still discover and hold these precious gems close to their hearts, but hopefully now thanks to the above examples, they’ll be a bit more willing to support and push them into glory knowing what it could bring to their career. Not to mention the bragging rights that exist with being there since day one.

In just two weeks, R&B put forth a convincing showcase of what tomorrow looks like in the genre, and the fact of the matter is people are listening. The yearning ears are back and the genre is providing music that satisfies all listeners alike in a room that is prepared to house a bigger audience than what was once had in recent years. Since Usher’s Confessions, few years have delivered an R&B album that dominated the charts as well as SZA’s SOS did. Then you have an album like Victoria Monét’s Jaguar II which left an impact on the culture that one would be silly to deny. Lastly, Usher received his flowers in an excellent performance of his career-spanning releases on the Super Bowl LVIII stage. It’s a vivid picture of a genre in great health, one that seems primed for might milestones in the coming years.

Justin Bieber Didn’t Join Usher At The Super Bowl Halftime Show, But He Thought It Was Fantastic

Leading up to this past weekend, there were rumors that Justin Bieber would be at Super Bowl LVIII to join Usher for the halftime show. That turned out to be only half correct: Bieber went to the game, but he was there merely as a spectator and did not get on stage with Usher. As for what actually did happen on the field between halves, though, Bieber thought it was great, as he heaped praise on Usher after the performance.

Sharing a photo from Usher’s performance, Bieber wrote yesterday (February 12), “LOVE YOU MY BROTHER. NOONE CAN SING AND DANCE THE WAY YOU DO. LOVE YOU FROM THE DEPTHS OF MY HEART. BROUGHT THE ‘A’ TO THE WORLD, ONLY YOU BABYYYYYY [kissing emoji].”

According to TMZ, before the game, Usher reached out to Bieber and asked if he’d make a halftime show appearance. A Daily Mail report from October 2023, meanwhile, said, “[Usher] really wants to prove himself worthy of such an honor because he definitely sees that the excitement level for him doing it is not at an all-time high. He has asked some of his friends who are artists to help him out and join him on stage, and he has thrown a few ideas towards Justin.”

Plenty of non-Bieber guests did take the field alongside Usher, though, including Alicia Keys, Ludacris, and Lil Jon.
