Travis Kelce Donates $100K To Children Injured In Kansas City Shooting

Travis Kelce has donated $100,000 to a GoFundMe set up to help cover the medical costs of two children injured in this week’s mass shooting at the Chiefs Super Bowl parade. The two girls whom Kelce donated to are reportedly related to local radio DJ Lisa Lopez-Galvan, who was the sole fatality in the shooting. Furthermore, the girls also received a visit from Patrick and Brittany Mahomes. The QB and his wife stopped by the children’s hospital in Kansas City to meet the two girls, whose identities have not been made public. TMZ later published photos of the Mahomeses with the girls in question.

Meanwhile, police have charged two people, both juveniles, in the shooting. The pair were charged with gun-related charges and resisting arrest. More information is also emerging about the fallout of the incident. One person died and 22 were injured, including 11 children. Furthermore, the local fire chief said that eight people were critically injured and seven were in serious condition. However, Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas, who was in attendance, said there were no plans to cancel the upcoming St. Patrick’s Parade. “We have parades all the time. I don’t think they’ll end. Certainly, we recognized the public safety challenges and issues that relate to them,” Lucas said.

Kelce’s donation follows one made by his girlfriend, Taylor Swift. Swift reportedly donated $100,000 to a GoFundMe set up to support the family of Lopez-Galvan. Lopez-Galvan was killed when a trio of individuals opened fire at the Chiefs Super Bowl parade earlier this week. “Sending my deepest sympathies and condolences in the wake of your devastating loss. With love, Taylor Swift,” a note on the donation read. Before taking the stage for an Eras Tour show in Melbourne, Swift’s team confirmed to Billboard that it was a legitimate donation from the singer.

Lopez-Galvan, who hosted a food program on a local radio station, was the lone fatality in the shooting. 22 others were injured. “It is with sincere sadness and an extremely heavy and broken heart that we let our community know that KKFI DJ Lisa Lopez, host of Taste of Tejano lost her life today in the shooting at the KC Chiefs’ rally. Our hearts and prayers are with her family. This senseless act has taken a beautiful person from her family and this KC Community,” wrote Lopez-Galvan’s employer wrote in a statement.

Others sought to mock Fox with one commenter writing, “Girl you had one opportunity to write a good post about this iconic pic and you write THIS?”

On Instagram last night (February 14), West shared a screenshot of a tweet from a Swiftie, which encouraged other fans to stream and buy Beyoncé’s new single “Texas Hold ‘Em,” in an effort to prevent one of West and Ty Dolla Sign’s new Vultures I songs from debuting at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

West started the post’s lengthy, all-caps caption, “When I said that I’m the new Jesus b*tch I wasn’t even thinking about Taylor Swift. That was a whole line before but I appreciate the free promo. Lil Wayne actually mentions Travis Kelsey on Vultures 2. This album is actually super positive and fun it’s all about triumphant.”

He later relayed his thoughts on the impact he’s had on Swift and shared a message for Swifties:

I can’t get that fired up to that point where I’m bumping Coach and it’s getting him off balance and stuff. Kelce was caught bumping into the Chiefs head coach and visibly screaming at him during Sunday’s Super Bowl. At the time, the Chiefs were trailing the 49ers and struggling to find a way through the San Francisco defense. However, Kelce noted that Reid’s immediate reaction surprised him. “Coach Reid actually came right up to me after that and didn’t even have harsh words for me. I was ready to get a f-cking a—chewing and for him to just tell me to ‘f-cking be better’. And he just let [me] know, ‘Hey man, I love your passion. I got cameras on me all over the place man, you don’t want things to come off’ … and it just made me … fired up to get a f-cking victory for him, man. Cause that’s how much I love that dude, man,” Kelce reflected.

However, Kelce’s attitude towards Reid isn’t the only thing about the tight end being scrutinized. A New York Times report about Travis Kelce’s haircut becoming a viral trend has left several prominent Black media members unhappy with how Kelce is being portrayed. “The NYT thinks that Travis Kelce invented the fade . When you have zero cultural competency on your staff, this is how you end up with stories like this, and explaining swag surfin,’ which is at least 15 or years old,” wrote journalist Jemele Hill on X.

As Hill noted, The Times referred to “The Fade”, a staple of Black fashion since it first grew to popularity in the militarized culture of the 1940s and 50s, as “The Travis Kelce”. Cultural markers do grow and adopt. And maybe it’s unreasonable for a 14-year-old Chiefs fan to know it’s a fade and not the Kelce. However, the 172-year-old New York Times should absolutely know better.
