5 Things We Want On Jay Rock’s Next Album

Top Dawg Entertainment’s packed release schedule for 2024 is officially underway, with a new album from ScHoolboy Q arriving this week. Last month, the label teased a list of artists on their roster expected to drop albums this year. In addition to ScHoolboy Q’s Blue Lips, fans can hope for new projects from the likes of SZA, Isaiah Rashad, SiR, Ab-Soul, and Doechii, as well as a TDE compilation. There is also Jay Rock, the label’s very first signee who has not released a new album in nearly six years.

Outside of ScHoolboy Q, Rock’s album is arguably the most anticipated. 2018’s Redemption marks his longest gap between releases, and expectations have continued to rise with each of the four singles that he shared throughout 2023. As TDE kicks off its stacked calendar of releases, here are 5 things we want on Jay Rock’s next album.

No Skips

Based on the latest singles that Jay Rock has dropped, his next album is already sounding promising. Standards may be high, but Rock has generally been consistent in delivering quality projects. Last year, he spoke to Bootleg Kev during BET Weekend, promising an album with “no skips.” “I’m tryna do an album like my last one where you ain’t gotta skip sh*t,” he expressed. Previous projects like Redemption and 90059 featured concise tracklists with runtimes of under one hour, leaving minimal room for error. This time, we are hoping that Jay Rock’s album is true to his word, containing no skips.

Sharp Lyricism

Sharp lyricism is almost guaranteed when it comes to a Jay Rock album. Fans can rely on him for skillfully crafted bars, and so can artists. In the time since Redemption, Jay Rock contributed standout verses to songs from Lil Wayne, Vince Staples, Anderson .Paak, Isaiah Rashad, and Reason. Each of these features showed Rock’s skillset has not at all diminished. Both his guest verses and latest singles signify that we can expect some top-tier lyricism from Jay Rock.

West Coast Bangers

One can always count on Jay Rock to deliver West Coast bangers on his albums. From “Hood Gone Love It” to “Tap Out,” he always brings his neighborhood of Watts into his music. Each of the singles he has released for his upcoming album has been exciting, but the most quintessentially West Coast track of the bunch is “Too Fast (Pull Over).” The Mustard-produced track features standout verses from Anderson .Paak and Latto. On the song, the three flow over a fast-paced West Coast funk beat laced with trumpet and steel drums. Judging by that song and other singles like “Still That Way,” we’re hoping for more energetic West Coast tracks.

More Moments Of Introspection

Jay Rock might be known for his aggressive delivery and tough bars, but some of his best lyrics are embedded within his most transparent songs. Songs like “Fly on the Wall,” “Broke +-,” and “Redemption” stand out on their respective albums as they see Rock at his most vulnerable. His projects usually balance upbeat gangsta rap songs with poetic moments of introspection, as well as plenty of storytelling. With those expectations in mind, let’s hope that Jay Rock provides some more smooth and reflective songs on his next album.

Black Hippy Feature

With most of the TDE roster slated to release albums this year, fans are optimistic for some of Jay Rock’s labelmates to feature on his upcoming album. More specifically, they hope for contributions from his fellow Black Hippy members, or ideally, an entire Black Hippy reunion. Jay Rock recently addressed the group’s current status on TMZ. He said that “we still doing our thing” and that every member is on good terms. However, he mentioned that “everybody’s busy” and on their own schedule in regards to doing more music. “The timing’s gotta be right,” he said.

Leaving the door open for a possible reunion, a Jay Rock album would be the perfect opportunity for Black Hippy to reconnect. Jay Rock tapped Ab-Soul for one of his album’s latest singles, “Blowfly.” While the chances of a potential reunion are unpredictable, especially with Kendrick Lamar’s departure from Top Dawg Entertainment, fans would rejoice over a Black Hippy song on Jay Rock’s next album.

Top Dawg Entertainment 2024 Releases: TDE Artists Dropping Albums This Year

TDE has long held its position as the home to one of the best artist rosters in all of hip hop. Despite Kendrick Lamar departing the label in 2022, the lineup still consists of artists such as ScHoolboy Q, Ab-Soul, Jay Rock, SZA, Isaiah Rashad, and many others. Unfortunately, the label has also garnered a reputation in the past few years for allegedly preventing their artists from releasing music for years at a time, prompting labels like Dreamville and Quality Control to put out a much larger and more compelling body of work. However, several posts from Top Dawg signees and label heads seem to hint that 2024 will be a massive year for the label, with several announced projects already in the works.

An Alleged Leak Indicates Over A Dozen TDE Releases In 2024

In late January, a leaked TDE release schedule began circulating the internet, with many fans unsure of the document’s validity. The document outlines a release order for over a dozen Top Dawg artists, all expected to land on streaming in 2024.

The fact that ScHoolboy Q will release his 6th studio album next week suggests some validity behind the leak, as he occupies the first position on the list. If this leak proves true, listeners can anticipate a SiR album shortly after Q releases Blue Lips, closely followed by Jay Rock’s next album. According to the leak, rapid subsequent album releases will follow by artists such as Doechii, Ray Vaughn, and Zacari, before SZA finally drops the long-awaited SOS deluxe album, Lana. Then, fans could expect new music from Ab-Soul and Isaiah Rashad.

Will TDE Introduce New Artists In 2024?

The Top Dawg 2024 roster lists several relatively new artists who have found a home on the California-based label, including Kal Banx, Devin Malik, and Lance Skiiiwalker. Most surprisingly, however, the image also suggests that the label will be dropping records from three unnamed artists, redacted in the style of a classified government form. If all goes according to plan for TDE, this would reinvigorate the label as one of the best homes for high-quality hip hop known to the music industry, rivaling historic successes from the likes of Death Row and G-Unit Records.

Jay Rock: TDE Compilation Dropping This Year, Too

Despite Kendrick’s departure from the label, Jay Rock has confirmed that a compilation project celebrating 20 years of Top Dawg Entertainment is set to release in 2024, featuring “a majority of Black Hippy on that thang.” It’s still unclear if the album will be composed of previously released music in the vein of a greatest hits LP, or if the project will have numerous brand new songs on it. However, Jay Rock has specified that he and his label-mates have been hard at work on the compilation, with the album release planned for the first quarter of 2024.

For now, we’ll still have to wait and see what TDE has planned in 2024. The only album 100 percent confirmed with a release date is ScHoolboy Q’s Blue Lips, though many other projects are currently in the works at the prolific label. If Top Dawg Entertainment releases even a fraction of the albums they’ve promised for 2024, this year will certainly go down in history as the label’s greatest achievement.

5 Things We Want From ScHoolboy Q’s “Blue Lips”

At long last, ScHoolboy Q announced that his highly anticipated sixth studio album will be released next month. Blue Lips, his first album in about five years, arrives March 1. The project’s teaser trailer reveals a 17-song tracklist written on a wall. As of now, no other details about the album have been officially revealed. Q’s last album, CrasH Talk, dropped back in 2019. Since then, he has mostly remained quiet on the music side of things, aside from the occasional guest verse. ScHoolboy Q featured on songs from Freddie Gibbs, Isaiah Rashad, Roc Marciano, Conway The Machine, Black Thought, and Reason.

In 2022, he dropped the standalone single, “Soccer Dad” and contributed “Clip In A Tray” to The Alchemist’s Sandwich compilation. In the five years since CrasH Talk, anticipation for ScHoolboy Q’s next album has grown immensely, setting expectations quite high. As we inch closer to March 1, here are five things we want from ScHoolboy Q’s Blue Lips

A Conceptually Sound Album

Each of ScHoolboy Q’s previous albums delivered skillfully crafted music surrounding some sort of loose concept. Albums like Oxymoron and Blank Face LP are meticulously sequenced to tell a story. Blue Lips hopefully has a unique perspective that captures a new chapter in ScHoolboy Q’s life and career. His albums often balance hard-hitting bangers with transparent moments of introspection. We hope for Blue Lips to offer a conceptually sound album that stacks up to his past releases.

Adventurous & Reliable Collaborators

ScHoolboy Q is more than capable of making an excellent album without any features. Still, his track record shows how well he works with others. While the album’s only known details are its title and tracklist, we can hope for some exciting guest features. As revealed during a 2021 livestream, Rico Nasty supposedly features on the song “Pop.”

ScHoolboy Q has proven to be an adventurous collaborator. He worked with Travis Scott, Kid Cudi, and Lil Baby on CrasH Talk. Ideally, fans hope to see reunions between him and his frequent collaborators, including his TDE label-mates. A Black Hippy reunion is highly unlikely, but listeners can be optimistic that the album will include a possible feature from Ab-Soul, Jay Rock, or SZA. Other dream features for Blue Lips include new collaborations with fan favorites like A$AP Rocky and Tyler, The Creator.

Musical Variety

One can usually expect a host of different musicians to produce a ScHoolboy Q album, and Blue Lips appears to be no different. In a 2021 livestream where he premiered many unreleased songs, Q revealed that his next album sounds nothing like his previous works and that “nobody on this album did a record by themselves, this whole album is a collab.” With a lot of co-production, we can hope to hear ScHoolboy Q exploring new musical territory while providing his signature gangsta raps. Although he hasn’t confirmed anything yet, we imagine that Blue Lips will likely see contributions from Tae Beast, DJ Fu, Skhye Hutch, Kenny Beats, and The Alchemist, who reportedly produced the song “Lost Times.”

Previously Unreleased Tracks

Over the years, ScHoolboy Q has teased a lot of new unreleased music that we hope sees the light of day on Blue Lips. He played “Pop” and other unknown snippets during the aforementioned livestream. Most notably, he premiered “THank God 4 Me” during Kal Banx’s Boiler Room set in LA last September. Based on the snippets that we have heard so far, Blue Lips is sounding promising. Hopefully, the majority of these unreleased tracks appear on the album.

“Blue Slides”

As the teaser trailer for ScHoolboy Q revealed the tracklist for Blue Lips, one song that stuck out to fans was “Blue Slides.” While not officially confirmed, many believed that this song could be a reference to Mac Miller’s Blue Slide Park. Due to their close friendship, we hope that this will be a tribute to the late rapper. Miller passed away back in 2018, causing Q to delay the release of CrasH Talk, which was almost finished at the time. With the two being such close friends and collaborators, one can hope for “Blue Slides” to be a touching ode to Mac Miller based on its title.

SZA, ScHoolboy Q, & More Perform At TDE’s Annual Christmas Concert

SZA, ScHoolboy Q, Jay Rock, and several other Top Dawg Entertainment (TDE) artists performed at the label’s 10th annual Christmas concert at the Nickerson Gardens Housing Project in Watts, California on Tuesday and Wednesday. Jay Rock, who grew up at Nickerson Gardens, served as the host for the two-day event. Watts previously honored him with a key to the city back in 2019.

“I grew up here and for people to see us come back and give back, it’s a blessing,” Jay Rock said in a statement. “I was one of these kids out here too. This lets them know that they can do this too. If there’s a kid out there trying to strive for something great, it’s motivation that no matter where you come from, you can make it out if you stay dedicated.”

For SZA, the performance comes as she continues to prepare for the release of her next effort, Lana. While the project initially began as a traditional deluxe version of her 2022 album, SOS, SZA admitted to Variety back in November that it was starting to feel more like its own full project. “It became more than I thought. It was gonna be something really soft because I had made all my screaming points [on ‘SOS’], and I just wanted to glide and not think [too much], and just get out of my own head. I was so happy to say some shit that didn’t mean a fucking thing. But now it’s definitely turning it into its own album. I guess I could drop another album randomly, because no one’s actually expecting that from me right now,” she told the outlet.

What Is SZA’s Best-Selling Album?

So far, SZA only has two full-length studio albums to her name. However, they have both been critical and commercial successes, earning her much-deserved accolades. Over a decade into her career, she is now widely recognized as a luminary in the realm of contemporary R&B. Additionally, she has broken and set new records in the industry, especially within the last year.

While Ctrl (2017), her debut album, was a huge success, it was SOS that catapulted her into a new echelon. Evidently, the singer is part of the crop of acts known as album artists, and she is certainly very skilled at putting together musical bodies of work. Nevertheless, the success of SOS has been astounding, and it only continues to rise. It’s no surprise that it earned SZA an outstanding nine nominations at the 2024 Grammys

SOS: A Worldwide Event

SOS was released on December 9, 2023, which was less than a year ago. Surprisingly, it’s already surpassed Ctrl’s overall sales and is now SZA’s best-selling album worldwide, moving over 3 million units alone in the United States. Considering the immense impact SOS has had since its release, this makes sense. However, an album selling over three million units in the US, in less than a year, is no ordinary feat. While Ctrl is also certified 3x Platinum in the US, it took the album about five years to achieve that status.

They are also evenly matched in Australia and the United Kingdom in album sales, moving 70,000 and 100,000 units, respectively. However, SOS obliterates Ctrl in Brazil, Canada, and Denmark. So far, SOS has sold 80,000 units in Brazil, 240,000 units in Canada, and 20,000 units in Denmark. Additionally, it is certified Gold (20,000 units) in the Netherlands, whereas Ctrl is yet to have any certifications in that country. Finally, SOS has sold 30,000 units in New Zealand and is currently 2x Platinum in the country. Certainly, Ctrl is in no way a commercial failure. Altogether, SOS has had a truly insane run this year. Nevertheless, both albums are individually brilliant, and SZA has earned her wins.

A Record-Breaking R&B Masterpiece

With two stellar albums in her catalog, SZA has become an untouchable force in the evolving world of R&B. Before SOS was finally released, it was also highly anticipated, as fans had begged and clamored for a new body of work. In fact, the album’s lead single, “Good Days,” was released on December 25, 2020, and peaked at number 9 on the Hot 100 chart. It was her first solo song to chart within the top 10 of the Hot 100. Afterward, it was almost exactly a year later that SZA dropped the second single, “I Hate U.” At the end of the music video for “Good Days,” she teased “Shirt,” the third single that didn’t drop until October 2022.

Finally, almost two years after its lead single dropped, SOS was released. It was an immediate hit, debuting at number one on the Billboard 200 chart. Subsequently, it stayed in that position for 10 non-consecutive weeks. This made it the first R&B album to spend its first seven weeks at number one since Whitney Houston’s 1987 eponymous album.

Additionally, it broke the record for the largest streaming week for an R&B album in the US. Following the album’s release, SZA dropped videos for “Nobody Gets Me,” and the Grammy-nominated hits, “Kill Bill,” and “Snooze.” Impressively, all six singles managed to peak within the top 20 on the Hot 100 chart. As a matter of fact, only “Shirt” failed to break into the top 10, peaking at number 11.

An R&B Titan Emerges

SOS is a follow-up album that has far exceeded expectations. Only featuring Don Toliver, Phoebe Bridgers, Travis Scott, and Ol’ Dirty Bastard, the 23-track album sees SZA bloom into an R&B heroine. It received Grammy nods in the Album of the Year and Best Progressive Album categories at the 2024 ceremony. In addition, it earned SZA seven more nominations for songs like “Kill Bill,” “Snooze,” and “Ghost in the Machine.” Overall, SOS is a monumental album, and will not be forgotten by either listeners or the artist anytime soon.

Jay Rock Shares Update On Black Hippy, Leaving The Door Open For A Reunion

It’s been a long time since we’ve seen them reunite on wax, but Black Hippy remains one of the most revered rap groups of the past few decades. Moreover, the TDE alumni (consisting of Jay Rock, Ab-Soul, ScHoolboy Q, and Kendrick Lamar) is still tight despite radio silence on release fronts– according to Rock. TMZ recently caught up with the California rapper and asked him about what the legendary collective is up to. It’s a question that fans often ask, and recently actually received an update on courtesy of label boss Top Dawg. Regardless of the hype, it seems from the 38-year-old’s words that they’re still tight, but probably won’t drop something anytime soon.

Specifically, he said that he and Kendrick are still cool despite him leaving the label, and that the same goes for the other members of Black Hippy. In addition, Jay Rock highlighted ScHoolboy Q’s upcoming release, his own, and Ab-Soul’s recently released HERBERT. With that in mind, the Watts native suggested that everyone’s too busy to work on something together. However, he didn’t close the door on it, either, so maybe he just had to be tight-lipped to not spoil the surprise.

Jay Rock Says Black Hippy Is Busy… But Still Tight

Of course, a new Black Hippy song, album, or something else altogether sounds way too good to be true. It’s one of those 2010s hip-hop myths that seemed more and more unlikely as each MC’s career progressed. Not only that, but there’s already plenty of material between each other to enjoy, so this isn’t as mythical or awaited as some other dream rap collabs. While it’s disheartening to hear that what we have is all we’ll get, we’ve gotten no such confirmation of that from any of these artists. Still, with only teases in mind, it’s hard not to be a little skeptical.

Most importantly, each artist is still dead-set on crafting their path with patience and skill. Rock recently dropped his new single “Too Fast (Pull Over)” with Anderson .Paak and Latto, and his next album’s soon to come. All we can ask for is that they don’t forget about each other and their chemistry, whether in ten days or ten years. On that note, check back in with HNHH for the latest news and updates on Jay Rock and Black Hippy.

ScHoolboy Q Tells Fans They’re Reading Into His Comments Too Much

Earlier this week, ScHoolboy Q had a LOT of praise for Kendrick Lamar. In an interview, he took the chance to dig into all kinds of details about his relationship with his fellow Top Dawg Entertainment rapper. “That’s my sensei. I’ll never be better than him. At any point in my career, in my life, I’ll never be better than him. Never. I’ll never be a better father, I’ll never be a better man,” he began. “You have to understand who the sensei is and you have to respect it. I’ll never be better than him, and I accept that.”

ScHoolboy Q wasn’t even close to done yet. “I’ll never be better than him. He built my character. I’m just saying, I’ll never be better than that dude. I don’t know this narrative muthaf*ckas be running with now, like, ‘Oh, I’m the greatest! I’m the woo-wop! But I have senseis, you get what I’m saying? And there’s certain people that I just won’t be better than, and I won’t even try to be better than.” To say the statement confused some of his fans would be a MAJOR understatement. But ScHoolboy Q responded in a tweet where he seemed to think things were being taken too literally.
