Nicki Minaj has beef with other rappers. It’s what she does when she’s not making hits. The beef that she’s sparking up with JAY-Z has been particularly bitter, though. The rapper absolutely laid into Hov after it was announced that Kendrick Lamar, and not Lil Wayne, would be headlining the 2025 Halftime Show in New Orleans. Nicki Minaj questioned JAY-Z’s allegiance, and called him some pretty nasty names in the process. Apparently, she had more to say.
Nicki Minaj’s initial Twitter rant took place on September 9. A day later, though, the rapper decided to drop more anti-Hov rhetoric on a DJ Akademiks TikTok post. Ak was covering the fallout of the Halftime Show announcement, and the alleged tensions between JAY-Z and Drake. Minaj went into the comment section and proceeded to make some bold claims about JAY’s former streaming service, Tidal. Tidal did not pan out like the rapper intended, but in seemed like it was going to be the next big thing in 2015. A lot of fans likely remember the Tidal signing event, where a host of superstars took to the stage to serve as partial owners.

Nicki Minaj was one of these superstars. She signed a streaming deal with Tidal, and proceeded to stand onstage next to Rihanna, Madonna, and countless others. The only problem? She didn’t get paid. Minaj claimed that she never received payment from the platform, despite JAY selling Tidal on the notion of making more for the artist. “I didn’t even get one red penny,” the rapper wrote. To add insult to injury, at least in her mind, Minaj was stiffed on signing to a platform that she spent lots of time promoting. She claimed to have promoted it as much as JAY-Z’s own wife, Beyonce. “No one promoted it more than me outside of Beyonce,” she added. “Lol chi.”
Nicki Minaj’s claims directly contrasts previous reports about Tidal. JAY-Z sold the streaming platform for a whopping $300 million in 2021. The Shade Room reported that the stars who were listed as co-owners of the platform were given a payout of $8.9 million. This was intended to cover the 3% stake that each of them, Minaj included, had in the company. Minaj has never mentioned Tidal drama in the past, which is a bit suspicious, but we get the sense that she has a lot more to say about JAY-Z in the near future. Maybe she will provide evidence to support her financial claims.
It’s been an undoubtedly rough couple of months for most Drake fans. With that being said, for the lucky ones who actually get to hang out with the hitmaker in person, it appears to be the opposite. Recently, athlete and content creator Anthony Hamilton Jr. took to TikTok to document his experience spending time with Drizzy. According to him, it was nothing short of luxurious. His video showcased a high-end hotel stay, round-the-clock car service, a shopping spree at the OVO store, and more.
Hamilton Jr. even shared clips of himself playing basketball with Drake on his massive indoor court. Obviously, this kind of treatment is reserved for a select few, but social media users are impressed nonetheless. “He is a good guy,” one X user claims. “Wtf where my invite,” another jokes.
Of course, there are also plenty of commenters speculating that Drake could just be trying to improve his public image following his explosive beef with Kendrick Lamar. These accusations are unconfirmed, though they’re far from the only ones he’s been hit with recently. Earlier this week, for example, an independent artist named Sixpathsss took to Instagram to accuse him of stealing his bars for “No Face.” Drake has yet to respond to these claims, which fans are extremely skeptical about. This week, Clevie of Steely & Clevie also accused Drake of sampling their track on “Blue Green Red” without properly clearing it with them. “We can’t clear a song without hearing it,” he told Dancehall Magazine. “But Drake went ahead and leaked it before.”
On the bright side, Drake appears to be enjoying the remainder of his summer, despite whatever his foes might have to say about it. It’s a bittersweet moment approaching the mid-August mark every year. The last few days of summer are those to cherish while the year’s final stretch lies ahead. Still, we have about one-third of 2024 left to produce hit records and albums that could top the year-end list. However, around this time, we start to look back at the records that defined the summer, and TikTok is probably an accurate reflection of the soundtrack to our core memories around this time.
It’s impossible to acknowledge the imprint that Kendrick Lamar had this year through a week’s worth of activity. From “Euphoria” to “Not Like Us,” he smashed the charts and emerged victorious in his long-standing feud with Drake, and by the time June rolled around, it became clear that the latter was going to be pervasive throughout the months that followed. But beyond Dot’s #1 single, TikTok’s top 10 Songs of the Summer in the U.S. also included several smash hits from hip-hop and R&B vets and newcomers, along with acts like Billie Eilish and Sabrina Carpenter. For the most part, hip-hop reigned supreme on TikTok this summer. Below, we’ll be diving into them.
TikTok has been the launching pad of several careers. Some may have predicted that it might not be sustainable but in the case of Jordan Adetunji, it seems like it’s only the beginning. His hit record began to gain traction on the platform, and eventually, landed a feature from Kehlani herself. “KEHLANI” comes in at #10 on TikTok’s Songs Of The Summer list.
Kendrick Lamar – “Not Like Us”
It could’ve been worse for Drake. It could’ve been #1. However, Kendrick Lamar, who one might describe as the antithesis of TikTok fame, found footing on the social media app with his hit song/diabolical diss track aimed at Toronto. Throughout the summer, the song has catapulted to radio and TikTok heights in ways that we’ve never seen before with a diss record. Nonetheless, it had a stronghold among the top 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 over the past few months while the single soundtracked basically every type of TikTok video possible – dance videos, cooking videos, and even political commentary.
GloRilla’s career could basically be on vacation between September – April, and still pop out as the reigning queen of the summer. Landing at #8 is her highly infectious collaboration alongside Megan Thee Stallion, which has transformed into a soundtrack for twerking and hair styling. Though “TGIF” definitely has a higher ranking for our summer 2024 anthems, “Wanna Be” isn’t too far behind.
Lay Bankz – “Tell Your Girl”
Lay Bankz has been making some major noise over the past few years but her efforts on TikTok have undoubtedly gained the most amount of attention. Fortunately, that has worked in her favor and landed her a spot on this year’s Songs of The Summer. In March 2024, a dance trend on TikTok, initiated by user @who.is.ga6y and later boosted by @laurieluna13, propelled “Tell Ur Girlfriend” to popularity, resulting in a surge of streams. By the following month, the track had appeared in millions of TikTok videos. Bankz filmed the music video for “Tell Ur Girlfriend,” which landed at #7, in her hometown of Philadelphia, which also sparked a separate TikTok trend focused on her appearance in the video.
Ian has been one of the most divisive figures in hip-hop this year. Still, the controversy that’s followed him has played a significant role in his overall success as becoming a leader of the new generation of hip-hop. With the release of Valedictorian, he finally broke into mainstream consciousness and his hit record, “Magic Johnson” has contributed towards that. The single has made some major waves online, thanks to TikTok, cementing its status as one of the biggest hits of the summer.
Initially released in 2011, this single from Dev Hynes a.k.a Blood Orange has rightfully earned its title as a timeless record. “Champagne Coast” has gained momentum through a variety of trends, such as the one where people ask their younger selves different prompts, like “did we make it?” or “did we strike it rich?” another trend suggests that a person will stay single until they hear “Champagne Coast” when gazing into the eyes of a potential partner. Blood Orange topped the TikTok Billboard 50 chart earlier this summer.
Tinashe – “Nasty”
As far as transcending through the times, Tinashe’s resilience deserves the utmost applaud. However, the release of “Nasty” marked a new era in her career, one where she delivered one of the hardest R&B bangers of the summer that has spawned a ton of dance and trending challenges on TikTok. In April, “Nasty” gained viral fame after the song was placed over a video of UK dancer Nate de Winer biting his nail and rolling his hips to the song. Since then, it’s earned well over 13 million views, inspiring dance routines by Christina Aguilera and Janet Jackson, among others.
Perhaps, it was inevitable that Richman would face industry plant accusations the moment he had his breakout but let’s be real, “Million Dollar Baby” is an undeniable hit. Along with “Not Like Us,” this song has had a strong grip on radio, social media, and the clubs for the entirety of the summer and will likely continue to dominate in the months to come. That said, it’s no wonder that it was the #1 song on TikTok over the past few months. Tommy Richman defined the summer of 2024.
Mike Dean hopped onto TikTok to inquire about a storage unit full of items that apparently previously belonged to Kanye West or members of his team. User @lockerblocker20 came across the storage unit and showed off what they found inside, earlier this week. In response, Dean hopped in the comments section to ask: “Any Mike Dean cases in there?”
While the creator responded “No,” they did find plenty of other interesting items. There were costumes from West’s iconic “Sunday Service” events, various pieces of audio equipment, Yeezy design notes, and much more. Apart from Mike Dean, other users in the comments had plenty of jokes about the situation. “Kim told him to come get his stuff and she stuck it in a storage unit lol,” one top comment reads. Another fan noted: “This is Kanye’s design patterns. This is WILD. This has to be worth some dollars.”

Despite Dean’s inquiry, he and Kanye West had a bit of a falling out back in 2022. After the controversial rapper shared a series of antisemitic posts on social media, Dean posted a statement from Steve Angello online, in which the Swedish House Mafia member reacted to Ye going on Alex Jones’ InfoWars show. “When media attention becomes more important than like itself, you’re on a slippery slope,” wrote Angello. “Saying provocative things to trigger social media for clicks and action is pathetic.” A year later, a fan on X (formerly Twitter) asked why he hadn’t been collaborating with West as of late. “Because I’m busy with much cooler people,” Dean responded.

Kanye West fans are going through a pretty rough time these days, as no amount of extra tracks can diminish the disappointment of VULTURES 2 with Ty Dolla $ign. However, at least one lucky die-hard got a welcome surprise after purchasing some of his old storage units from the mid-2010s era. These boxes contained Yeezy clothing samples, pictures of designs, schematics and drawings, studio equipment, microphones, and even the outfits that Ye and company wore for his 2015 Hollywood Bowl performance. While it’s a lot of random stuff that might not even work or be fashionably relevant anymore, there are still some curious details throughout. One shirt in the pile, for example, looks a lot like the VULTURES merch designs that would arrive years later.
Furthermore, we’re sure that so many people out there, Kanye West fans or not, would love a chance to peruse these storage units themselves. But sadly, fans are concerned with more pressing matters related to the Chicago artist right now, mainly his alleged nitrous gas addiction. His former presidential campaign affiliate Milo Yiannopoulos made these accusations online, which have sparked a lot of debate, discussion, and discomfort. Considering all of the controversies that Kanye’s been involved in over the past two years, this is either a possible explanation or a sign that things are more difficult than we imagined.
Speaking of which, Kanye West blamed his antisemitic rants in 2022 on being under the influence of alcohol. “You wanna know what alcohol I had inside me? Hennessy,” he told Candace Owens during their sit-down interview in 2022, conducted very soon after these attacks resulted in heavy public fallout. Unsurprisingly, many don’t find this to be an acceptable excuse, or think that it’s just a fake ploy to get him out of accountability. All of this is mostly speculative and unconfirmed, so take it all with a grain of salt.
Elsewhere, we know that Kanye West will continue to make headlines for all the good and bad reasons under the sun. On a more positive note, he explained during this Candace Owens interview why he thinks that Jay-Z and Drake are “the greatest rappers ever” for two very different reasons despite his conflicts with them over the years. Still, many of these more expected and music-related takes fall under a whole lot of baggage. So like this TikTok user, a lot of fans are digging back through history to remember simpler times, or at least, times in which we didn’t know all of the disturbing and worrisome sides to this story. And that’s whether you’re saving empathy for Ye or not.
Brittany Renner has shared another post on social media after wearing what appeared to be a black khimar over the weekend. In an initial post, she discussed receiving “signs” from the universe and remarked: “It’s almost as if we’re waiting for this moment to feel ready — you’re not gonna feel ready for something you’ve never done. When she shared the update on X (formerly Twitter), users in the replies had plenty of mixed reactions. “I’m honestly curious about how this will work out for you because the Muslims I know would not wife a woman with a past like yours,” one user wrote. Wiz Khalifa and Aimee Aguilar are parents! The couple welcomed their first child together, a daughter, on July 17. Khalifa and Aguilar kept the specific details surrounding the birth under wraps, but they’ve since confirmed that their daughter’s name is Kaydence. The happy couple also detailed their experiences on social media. Wiz Khalifa posted a video on Instagram with the caption: “POV thinking about all the outfits I’m about to pick out for my daughter.” Aguilar, meanwhile, divulged some of the complications that arose during the birth on TikTok.
“I gave birth exactly a week ago today, so I am a week postpartum,” Aguilar told followers on July 24. She posed for the camera, but revealed that she’s been unable to exercise sine giving birth to Kaydence. “I ended up tearing,” she explained. “So, during the labor and I pushed her out, I tore. I have stitches down there, so I think I’m going to wait another week or two before I start doing anything strenuous on my body.” Kaydence is Aimee Aguilar’s first child, and Wiz Khalifa’s second. The rapper also has a son named Sebastian with ex-wife Amber Rose.
Wiz Khalifa has been forthcoming about fatherhood, and how it’s changed him as a person. He detailed his co-parenting situation with Rose during a January appearance on the Call Her Daddy podcast. “It’s good. It’s fun,” he explained. “Well not fun, but like, I think I’m in a good situation with her as a co-parent. Especially through time. Things have just eased up and become a lot more enjoyable and just regular of a process.” Wiz Khalifa also noted that becoming a parent was difficult early on in his career. He learned how to adjust, and become a better father, as he matured.
“All the irregular sh*t has been worked out,” the rapper explained. “And we’re past everything that I think would cause people to be dysfunctional. So at this point, it’s way easier to just run things smoothly than it is for it not to be smooth.” Wiz Khalifa and Amber Rose recently got together to celebrate their son’s 11th birthday. The celebrities threw a massive party with a basketball court and a mural of rappers, and posted photos from the event afterwards. “That’s what I Call a function,” the rapper wrote on his IG.
Ice Spice has a big month ahead. Overall, she is going to be dropping her debut album on July 26th. Y2K is one of the most anticipated releases of the entire year, and for good reason. However, fans are curious to see if it will end up living up to the hype. After a few hits in 2023, Spice’s 2024 output hasn’t been hitting the same, in the eyes of fans. The UK artist has name-dropped women artists in the past, and now he finds himself cozying up with Ice Spice. Last night, the two posted a TikTok together, and it is clear they are getting quite close. Below, you can see Central Cee spinning the New York rapper in a rolling chair while getting touchy-feely.
Interestingly enough, some fans over on The Shade Room aren’t so convinced of this new relationship. “This relationship is just as real as Rubi Rose & Druski’s 30-Day Trial Relationship,” one person wrote. “It’s giving publicity. It’s giving engagement. It’s giving marketing team. Yall let these celebs play yall like a fiddle,” said another. Overall, it’s clear that fans are feeling skeptical. Although given the history of fake celebrity relationships, it is easy to understand why.
