Eminem’s Iconic ‘Stan’ Video Apparently Almost Had A Different Child Star Playing The Obsessive Fan

It turns out that Eminem‘s memorable “Stan” music video reportedly almost had a different lead actor.

Devon Sawa, who starred in it, did a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight where he revealed that directors Dr. Dre and Philip Atwell were aiming for another child star — but it didn’t work out.

“Full disclosure: they went out to Macaulay Culkin first, I believe,” Sawa said. “I think that they wanted him, and he wasn’t available, or didn’t want to do it or whatever.”

“Then Dre, who had just seen Final Destination and was a fan, suggested [me],” he added. “There happened to be somebody in the casting office that knew somebody who was friends with me, and they called me that way… and it ended up working out pretty good.”

Looking back on it, it seems wild to picture the Home Alone star playing a character that idolized and imitated Eminem in 2000. However, when Entertainment Tonight reached out to Culkin and Eminem’s representatives, they didn’t return a comment to confirm.

Although the part could’ve gone to someone else, Sawa did point out just how lucky he still feels to have been selected. “It’s also one of the proudest things I’ve been a part of,” he shared. “I’ll tell you one thing, I know it better now than I did that day. Because I’ve heard it millions of times since.”

Eminem Issued An Open Call To All His ‘Stans’ To Appear In His Upcoming Documentary

Eminem is looking for real-life Stans to appear in his upccoming documentary about the phenomenon. The Detroit rap icon famously coined the term that has become the bane of online music discussion and now, he wants his biggest fans to share their stories. He tweeted out a link to a questionnaire that asks when and how respondents first heard about Eminem, whether they consider themselves Stans or not, whether they collect Eminem merch, write fan fiction about him, or make artwork inspired by him.

The term “Stan” was famously coined by Eminem in a song from the 2000 Marshall Mathers LP of the same name. The titular character was a fan who wrote increasingly unhinged letters to Eminem (expressed in first-person lyrics from Eminem in character and played by Devon Sawa in the music video) as he engaged in a one-sided, parasocial friendship with the rap star. The song ends with Stan interpreting a lack of response from Eminem as a rejection, snapping, and driving his car off a bridge with his girlfriend locked in the trunk. In the final verse, Eminem does get around to responding, only to realize that he’s too late.

While he likely meant the song as a tongue-in-cheek satire of fans’ obsessions with celebrities, in recent years, the term has been applied to online fan clubs who engage in targeted bullying campaigns against stars’ perceived rivals and critics. These attacks have been known to escalate into offline harassment, including “swatting” or “doxing” victims (calling in false police reports or sharing private information online) and even allegedly threatening to vandalize family members’ gravesites.

Eminem’s Stans have even harassed writers of this very site (y’all really did not like our reviews of his last few albums). Maybe you can include those stories on the questionnaire, which you can find here.

Eminem Will Be Co-Producing A ‘Revealing’ And ‘Edgy’ Documentary About Fandoms, Fittingly Titled ‘Stans’

Eminem will be co-producing a new documentary called Stans through his Shady Films company, which will focus on the rise in intense fandoms when it comes to music. The title creatively pulls inspiration from the rapper’s song, “Stan,” which popularized the term for an obsessed fan — or stalker plus fan.

It will be directed by Steven Leckart and be released later this year, according to Variety.

Stans has specifically been described as a “revealing, edgy, and disarmingly personal journey into the world of superfandom, told through the lens of one of the world’s most iconic and enduring artists, Eminem, and the fans that worship him.”

Stans will be the opportunity for us to turn the camera around and ask the audience about being fans — and in some cases, fanatics,” Eminem’s manager, Stuart Rosenberg, and Stuart Parr shared in a joint statement. “This is a study of the relationship between fanbase and artist through the lens of one of Eminem’s most fascinating songs and one of the world’s most important entertainers.”

“Paul Rosenberg and I have known each other since my days on MTV’s TRL, a show that was driven by the power of fandom, bringing artists and their fans together,” Tony DiSanto, the CEO of Diga Studios, added. “So when he told me about the idea for this film, it felt like we had come full circle. Stans will explore the complex relationship between fame and super fandom, told through the lens of one of the world’s most Iconic artists, Eminem, his music, and, especially, his most extreme fans.”

As of right now, an official release date for Eminem’s Stans documentary has yet to be announced.

A Provocative Eminem Song Is At The Center Of A Workplace Sex Discrimination Lawsuit

Since the beginning of his storied career, Eminem has been known for his often explicit and/or controversial lyrics. Now, one of his most beloved tunes is at the center of a workplace sex discrimination lawsuit.

As the San Francisco Chronicle reports, eight former employees of S&S Activewear, seven of whom are women, have filed a lawsuit against the company. The suit says the company allowed employees to set up and use speakers in the warehouse. Among the songs played on those speakers, and cited in the lawsuit, are Eminem’s “Stan” and Too Short’s “Blowjob Betty.”

Part of “Stan” tells the story of a man who put a woman in the trunk of his car, with Eminem rapping, “See, Slim — shut up, b*tch! I’m tryin’ to talk / Hey, Slim, that’s my girlfriend screamin’ in the trunk / But I didn’t slit her throat, I just tied her up — see? I ain’t like you / ‘Cause if she suffocates, she’ll suffer more, and then she’ll die, too.”

The suit claims S&S received complaints “almost daily” for nearly two years, but management defended the music, calling it “motivational.”

The lawsuit was previously dismissed by Chief US District Judge Miranda Du, “who said actions offensive to both sexes cannot be considered sex discrimination.” However, the suit was reinstated by the Ninth US Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco.

In a 3-0 ruling, Judge M. Margaret McKeown said, “Sometimes employees placed the speakers on forklifts and drove around the warehouse, making it more difficult to predict — let alone evade — the music’s reach. In turn, the music allegedly served as a catalyst for abusive conduct by male employees, who frequently pantomimed sexually graphic gestures, yelled obscenities, made sexually explicit remarks, and openly shared pornographic videos.”

McKeown also wrote, “An employer’s status as a purported ‘equal opportunity harasser’ provides no escape hatch for liability.” McKeown also noted harassment “need not be directly targeted at a particular plaintiff in order to pollute a workplace” and continued, “Whether sung, shouted, or whispered, blasted over speakers, or relayed face-to-face, sexist epithets can offend and may transform a workplace into a hostile environment” for women and men.

Pedro Pascal Proves He’s A Diehard Rihanna Stan: Watch

If there’s one celebrity who has no shortage of admirers right now, it’s Rihanna. The 35-year-old’s year began with her highly anticipated return to performing during the Super Bowl Halftime show. While many expected her to give us an album or tour announcement at the same time, she instead revealed that A$AP Rocky will be a father for the second time in the coming months. Despite the fact that she and the rapper are obviously very happy together, many men continue to fantasize about RiRi.

It seems that’s exactly what Pedro Pascal was doing at Sunday (March 12) night’s Academy Awards, where he was caught on camera asking about the Bad Gal multiple times. In one clip, The Last of Us actor gets obviously distracted while chatting with Amelia Dimoldenberg of Chicken Shop Date fame. Just seconds in, he avoids her question to excitedly ask instead, “Is that Rihanna?!”

Pedro Pascal Has Rihanna on the Brain

When the journalist says no, Pascal’s energy instantly focuses back on the present moment. “Well, maybe… Is it?” Dimoldenberg asks before the answer is revealed. According to Uproxx, it was actually Saweetie, and not Rihanna, who the 47-year-old spotted at the event. Surprisingly, that isn’t the only time he brought the soon-to-be mother of two up in his red-carpet interviews.

“Is Rihanna performing?” the Chile-born star asked another correspondent ahead of the Academy Awards. “I don’t think Rihanna’s performing, I mean that would be a nice surprise,” they incorrectly told Pascal. “But she is coming because she’s nominated,” they confirmed.

And perform, she did. For the second time this year, the Barbadian-born singer left audiences amazed with her vocal talent. The maturity is more evident in her voice than ever before, and she looked radiant in a black and silver outfit that gave us a peek at her growing baby bump. Catch a video of Rihanna’s emotional Oscars show below, and tell us what you thought of this year’s award ceremony in the comments.

Millyz Flips Eminem’s “Stan” On New Single “Tonight”

Millyz emerged as one of the most impressive lyricists in recent times. Though he’s often discredited for being a white rapper, he has undoubtedly proven to be an impressive force. Not to mention, he’s earned praise and co-signs from a slew of respected MCs, from Dave East to Jadakiss. In 2022, he blessed fans with the fifth installment in the Blanco series, which is arguably the best. It also had some of the biggest features with artists like Fivio Foreign and Styles P appearing on the project.

The rapper is currently revving up for the release of Blanco 6, which will hit streaming services on April 7th. He previously reunited with Jadakiss on “Moon Roof,” and delivered a handful of other collaborations in anticipation of the project. “Risk Takers” found Millyz trading bars with Albee Al and Leaf Ward and he also unleashed “Role Model.” However, today, he blessed fans with a major record that doubles as an impressive co-sign from Slim Shady.

Millyz Samples Eminem On “Tonight”

In the midst of Melle Mel’s recent comments about Eminem, Kevin Gates said that the Detroit rapper earns a spot in his top 5 off the strength of “Stan.” Today, Millyz debuted his new single, “Tonight” which samples the Ditto-assisted record. While Millyz flexes his melodic range, he also taps into his intensity as he details the volatility of the streets and tries to survive those circumstances. “I know they talkin’ to agents/ Pray they don’t hit us with RICO/ I know I’m the one that they namin’,” he raps.

Prior to the song’s release, Millyz found himself engulfed in a mild feud with Rae Sremmurd, more specifically Slim Jxmmi. Since Swae Lee just got Eminem to clear the sample, Slim felt a type of way about Millyz using the sample to “Stan.” He said that Swae’s “banging” version will land on Sremm 4 Life while Millyz simply brushed it off, telling him, “u be aight.” We’ll see if Swae Lee’s version ends up hitting the same way as Millyz’s single “Tonight.”  Press play above and sound off with your thoughts in the comments.

‘Ant-Man’ Stars Evangeline Lilly And Kathryn Newton Were Stunned To Learn About Eminem’s Role In The Word ‘Stan’

It’s hard to come up with something that becomes a cultural mainstay, and Eminem did it unintentionally: His 2000 hit “Stan” is about an obsessive fan, and it was such a popular and descriptive depiction of that sort of person that the word “stan” is now commonly used to describe passionate devotees. The word “stan” has become its own thing distinct from Eminem at this point, as Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania stars Evangeline Lilly and Kathryn Newton proved in a recent interview.

In a PopBuzz presser, the two were asked about the word and it turned out they had complementary sets of knowledge: Lilly hadn’t heard of the term “stan” but was aware of the Eminem song, while Newton is up on her slang but didn’t know the word’s origins.

Newton explained how the word is used, which prompted Lilly to wonder if it was the Eminem song that spawned the word. The burden of confusion shifted from Lilly to Newton at that point, who had apparently never made the connection between Eminem and the word “stan” before until after Lilly explained what the song is about.

Quantumania, meanwhile, could use some more stans, it seems.

Check out Lilly and Newton’s interview above.
