SZA’s ‘SOS’ North American Tour Reportedly Grossed A Whopping $34 Million In Revenue Across Its 10-Week Run

SZA might want to put a hit out on her ex, but there’s one relationship the singer still cherishes: the one with her fans. After five long years since the release of her debut studio album, the singer poured her all into her follow-up, SOS. The “Ghost In The Machine” singer’s creative efforts paid off handsomely both on the charts and via ticket sales.

According to Billboard, SZA’s 18-date SOS North American tour grossed $34.5 million, which equated to approximately 238,000 tickets sold. The tour — which featured a special guest, “3 Boys” singer Omar Apollo — kicked off in February and ran until late March. The tour also featured surprise appearances by Cardi B, Summer Walker, Phoebe Bridgers, and Lizzo.

The report outlines the tour brought out in around $1.9 million and 12,812 tickets each show. As for the specifics on each arena, Billboard revealed that despite having the second-highest ticket price at $174.69, the SoCal arena sold 8,700 tickets. For contrast, SZA’s shows in New York at Madison Square Garden and Inglewood, California’s Kia Forum were the two highest grossing as well as highest attended.

The tour’s two shows at MSG on March 4 and 5 grossed $4.7 million, with 27,000 tickets sold. Meanwhile, SZA’s March 22 and 23 shows at the Kia Forum, racked in $3.9 million for 25,000 tickets sold.

As for the the other high-attendance shows, Atlanta came in at about 11,069 tickets sold and Toronto came in around 14,383 tickets sold.

Discovering The Easter Eggs In SZA’s Dreamy ‘S.O.S Tour’

Thursday night (March 23), I went to the first evening of SZA’s sold-out Los Angeles tour dates at the Kia Forum where she performed songs from her No. 1 hit album SOS and her critically acclaimed debut album Ctrl. It was truly an ethereal experience filled with oceanic splashes of glowing reds, yellows, oranges, soft purples, and pretty pinks, intertwined with bright sparkling lights.

While many were in attendance to simply watch Solana perform “Kill Bill” or her soon-to-be-hit-record “Snooze,” I wanted to see how all the Easter eggs she’d been placing into her music videos since 2014’s “Babylon” video aligned with her show. Puzzles are my thing, what can I say?

This particular puzzle started on December 8, 2022, the day SOS was released. It was a full moon, which is said to be the perfect time to set intentions of releasing things that no longer serve you. That had to mean something, right?

The day she shared her tour dates, I immediately noticed that it was set to take place right in the bosom of Pisces season on February 21 while the new moon was in Pisces (her moon sign) and wrapping on March 19. The original final date of the tour was March 22, during the Aries full moon. The full moon is said to be the best time to manifest fresh intentions. From there I got lost in a rabbit hole of discovery.

Aware of these connections, I was better able to understand her tour performance — which could be seen as something like a Broadway play where SZA is acting out the journey of saving herself with help from the stars. When the show began, SZA sat on the ledge of a board, mimicking her cover art, as she rapped the unreleased “PSA.” Then, she took a dive into the ocean.

That moment reminded me of the “Babylon” video when she fully immersed herself in a lake, leaving behind $7 (a number that is significant for many reasons) and a note that read, “Gone fishin’,” an idiom for checking out of reality. Fishing for what? Wisdom.

As she got into “Seek & Destroy,” “Notice Me,’ “Love Galore,” and “Broken Clocks,” I noticed her performing on a boat dock.

It’s reminiscent of her “Broken Clocks” video where the kids from Camp SZA are shown running to a lake to hang out. TDE’s own Jay Rock is there too and he holds a lifesaver.

sza broken clocks video

When she spit the words to her title track “SOS,” it looked like she was on the side of a ship or a submarine. Then she eased into, “Blind,” a song about discovering that everything you need to be great is already inside of you. ”It’s so embarrassing / All of the things I need living inside of me / I can’t see it,” she crooned. “It’s so embarrassing / All of the love I seek living inside of me/ I can’t see, I’m blind.”

Although there’s no music video, I peeped that the lighthouse she was singing in front of was from her Saturday Night Live performance. Lighthouses guide ships safely to the harbor, especially when the weather is difficult and dangerous.

Next up was the Darkchild-produced banger “Shirt,” a song that was well worth the wait — as was the live performance for it. Now, at the end of the “Broken Clocks” video, she gets beat up at a strip club, causing her nose to leak and putting a bloodstain on her shirt, while her friend yells “Sis! Wake up!” Jay Rock’s music plays in the background. In the “Shirt” video, she tells LaKeith Stanfield, “Color is light, light is energy, everything is energy.” Also, while she dissociates n another part of the video, we witness SZA attempting to grab a fish.

sza broken clocks and shirt video

Following “Shirt,” she got into “Smoking On My Ex Pack” while impressively doing a full-on costume change. Then, boarded a ship named SOS, and on the back, it read “Ctrl Fishing Co.” Appearing in a flowy black outfit, a beautiful performance of “All The Stars” took place along with Ctrl goodie “Garden (Say It Like Dat).” So far, the ride on her ship appeared to be pretty tranquil even as she rocked out to “F2F” alongside her glorious, stand-out guitarist.

Suddenly the ocean wave patterns became turbulent with rain pouring down as she performed the choreography to “Low” upon the deck of her ship. After wowing us all with the splits, SZA disappears into a sea of darkness.

Then, a bright light circulated the stadium, and to my left, a lighthouse resurrected in the middle of the audience. My eyes followed the light until it landed on SZA, who was adorned in a fairy-like yellow dress and floating in an orange lifeboat while singing “Supermodel.” Fans below were blessed with a rain of flowers sprinkled over their heads. With each song she performed, the closer to the lighthouse she got.

Once she returned to the stage for performances of “Kiss Me More” and “Love Language,” however, she was underwater with fish and a large anchor. Then, a large red shipping crate appeared to emerge from the ocean at the beginning of her “Kill Bill” performance and into “I Hate U,” where streams of water cascaded behind her. According to an interview with Rolling Stone, SZA originally envisioned herself sitting atop a shipping crate for her cover art.

SZA wrapped with “Good Days.” Back into her golden fairy-like dress, she was peacefully seated on the same board from the start of the show but instead, she glowed with the sun. “Half of us chasin’ fountains of youth and it’s in the present now,” she sang as a final reminder to the thousands of supporters who came out in the rain to see her.

SZA’s SOS Tour was indeed an immersive experience based on the Easter egg hunt alone (and I didn’t even detail all of the eggs!). At the end of the show, she teased the visual for “Low” which is expected to drop “soon.” The way SZA utilized her power to steer herself into a massively successful album that has touched people across the globe coupled with holding down the No. 1 spot for 10 weeks straight and a sold-out tour is absolutely inspiring. And if my intuition is correct, SOS could be making a return to No. 1.

SZA Was Beyond Excited While Meeting Avril Lavigne

SZA has been enjoying an immense amount of success as of late. Overall, it is all very well deserved. Almost six years ago now, she changed the game with her album CTRL. Five years later, she finally returned with SOS which is arguably even better than CTRL. Although this seemed like an impossible task, SZA was able to get it done. Her growth as an artist has been on full display, and fans continue to soak in everything she does. Moreover, she is currently on tour, and each show has proven to be even better than the last.

Just a couple of nights ago, SZA had a show in Los Angeles. As everyone knows, L.A. is a hub for celebrities. Consequently, it should come as no surprise that some of the biggest celebrities were out and about at her show. Adele, Justin and Hailey Bieber, and Savannah James were just a small sample size of some of the names in attendance. SZA expressed her gratitude for this support on social media following the concert. Additionally, she even got to meet with the likes of Avril Lavigne.

SZA x Avril Lavigne

Lavigne was at the concert with her new beau Tyga. Subsequently, she got to go backstage where she met with SZA, who seemed ecstatic to be talking to pop-punk royalty. It is unknown what the two were talking about, but perhaps we could very well see these two collaborate in the future. After all, SZA did go in a pop-punk direction on one of her songs off of SOS. Fans were fond of that effort, so it wouldn’t be shocking to see SZA pursue that sound a bit more.

Regardless, this is yet another example of just how big SZA’s profile has grown in recent years. Overall, SOS has further cemented her as a global superstar, and you can’t help but love that for her. Whether or not it will take another five years for a new album, still remains to be seen. Let us know what you thought of SOS and the ensuing tour, in the comments down below. SZA’s “SOS” Tour: Singer Shows Big Love For Vancouver In Beautiful New Photo Dump

Between 2017’s Ctrl and 2022’s SOS, SZA left her fanbase undeniably hungry for new music, and since they’ve got it, it’s hardly left the top position on the charts. Along with her sophomore album, the TDE artist announced that she would be heading out on tour across North America, which she’s currently in the midst of. She kicked things off in Columbus, Ohio on February 21, and will be wrapping her time on the road later this week in Los Angeles. Before her grand Californian finale, SZA had one last show to put on for Canada last night (March 19).

The 33-year-old gave audiences at Rogers Arena precisely what they were looking for as she sang hits like “Kill Bill,” “Shirt,” and “Good Days” from SOS. She also revisited old favourites from her discography, catering to new and old fans as her trip around the continent quickly approaches its conclusion. Thankfully for those who weren’t able to catch SZA on tour, she’ll be performing at Hangout Music Festival in Gulf Shores, AL in mid-May.

SZA Has A Blast in Van City

To commemorate her time in Vancouver, the “Drew Barrymore” hitmaker posted a photo dump on Monday (March 20) morning with photos and videos both from her recent performance and her fun outdoor adventures in the beautiful city. “Pacific North West always hits,” SZA wrote in the caption before thanking Canada’s coast for showing her love and bringing her joy. Kicking off the carousel is a photo of the Missouri native hanging out backstage, her curves looking ample in a sleek brown two-piece set displaying her toned midriff.

Immediately afterward, SZA showed off her wild side as she explored the local hiking trails, where she came across plenty of running water, rock, and beautiful green trees. We also see her (and her bodacious behind) posing for digital photos before her concert, smiling wide while sporting baggy jeans and Ugg boots, and sharing a thoughtful message from her adventures with followers. “Come forth into the light of things,” it reads. “Let nature be your teacher.” See all of the vocalist’s Vancouver memories for yourself above, and check back later for more pop culture news updates.

Cardi B Popped Out At SZA’s ‘SOS’ Tour’s First Night In New York City To Perform ‘I Do’

Last month, SZA and featured opening act Omar Apollo kicked off the North American wing of the former’s SOS Tour. Following its opening, the singer took to social media to share that will she was excited by the crowd’s reception of the show. However as the tour progresses, the setlist will change to give her creative control.

Although SZA ended up postponing her Philadelphia show, she was sure to give twice as much energy during the first night of her shows in New York City. Not only did she bring out her latest musical bestie Phoebe Bridgers for a surprise performance of their song, “Ghost In The Machine,” she also called on hometown rapper Cardi B to join her on stage as well.

Performing their collaborative track, “I Do,” off of Cardi B’s Grammy-Award-winning debut album, Invasion Of Privacy, the arena went crazy. The pair have performed the song together in the past, most notably at Coachella in 2018, but as SZA’s star continues to rise, this moment meant a lot to the songwriter.

After the two performed, SZA took a moment to thank Cardi B for coming out, saying, “This queen is so kind to even take the time with two children and a bajillion dollar career to come here…thank you so f*cking much.”

Cardi B didn’t want the party to stop there, asking the crowd, “Should we get ratchet?” Then the DJ went on to play “Tomorrow 2,” in which Cardi is featured.

SZA’s praise of Cardi B continued on Instagram, where she continued to thank her for making a guest appearance.

SZA Postpones Philly Show, Headliner Omar Apollo Still Performs

On February 21st, SZA commenced her SOS Tour, so far hitting seven cities including Boston, Chicago, and Denver. The Grammy Award winner was set to perform in Philidelphia on Thursday (March 2) but unexpectedly postponed the show the morning of. SZA, who just accepted the 2023 Woman of the Year award at the Billboard Women In Music event the night prior, was expected to travel from Los Angeles for her Thursday performance. Although the reason for cancellation is uncertain, it is likely due to issues that occurred on her cross-country trip.

The show was supposed to be held at the Wells Fargo Center in Philly. The venue took to Twitter Thursday morning to announce the abrupt change in plans. “The SZA performance scheduled for today at Wells Fargo Center is postponed,” the tweet read, “fans are encouraged to hold onto their tickets for the rescheduled date to be announced shortly. All tickets will be honored.” The 33-year-old singer also took to the platform to issue her own apology, writing “Phillyyyy I REALLY wanted to see you tonight but due to unforeseen logistical/ production issues we’re FORCED to reschedule.”

Despite SZA’s Cancellation, The Show Goes On

Headlining for SZA during the SOS Tour is 25-year-old singer Omar Apollo. Fusing together R&B and pop, Apollo especially gained recognition in hip-hop for his track “Evergreen.” The song was included on his debut studio album, Ivory, which dropped in April 2022. Additionally, the artist earned additional recognition last month for receiving his first Grammy nomination. Needless to say, Apollo achieved a successful year of career growth, similar to SZA’s gains with her sophomore album.

Although the tour’s Philly performance has been canceled, Apollo has found a way to make the show go on. He announced a “secret show” in New York City, which would replace the original set that would have been happening just a few hours away. Immediately, his impromptu concert, which was set at Irving Plaza, sold out of tickets. But, fans are still awaiting the new dates for SZA’s Philly show. As of now, she is set to perform a two-night run at Madison Square Garden on March 4th and 5th. For more news on hip-hop and pop culture, be sure to check out HNHH.

Drake Revealed What He’s Listening To At The Moment And SZA’s ‘Incredible’ Sophomore Album ‘SOS’ Made The List

It seems like the five-year wait has paid off for singer SZA. Rave reviews for her sophomore album, SOS, continue to pour in from fans (we really like it, too). Ditching the “sad girl music” label she had been bestowed. On the now-No. 1 album, SZA explores relationships with a fresh new perspective as a songwriter.

In a recent interview with the online casino Stake, rap superstar Drake shared admiration for the 23-track body of work. However, as the “Rich Flex” rapper peered through the live chat, he noticed one question continued to pop up. “I know one of the questions was ‘what have I been listening to,” said Drake.

The rapper then proceeded to list off a few artists, including Lilah and Baby Drill, before disclosing, “And I’ve been listening to the new SZA, listening [to SOS], [it’s] incredible.”

This should come as no surprise that Drake is a fan of alternative R&B, as he constantly refers to himself as a “certified lover boy.” But, given Drake and SZA’s history, some fans were taken back by his response. But fear not: after their brief fling ended in 2009, the former lovers remained cordial.

Recently, the singer shared that even though Drake “has a Regina George quality to him,” they are in good standing.

“We’re cool. And we’ve always been cool,” said SZA, “It’s never been weird. It didn’t come completely out of the blue when he let me know. I didn’t know it was a song with 21 [Savage] or anything like that. But anytime he’s ever mentioned me, it’s always been positive. He’s never said anything negative about me. I’m grateful for that. I think highly of him… He’s King Drake.”

SOS is out now via Top Dawg Entertainment. Get it here.
