Camp Flog Gnaw Somehow Improved On Perfection

Tyler, The Creator’s Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival is already one of the best festivals in the world. So, for the festival’s tenth anniversary, how could the rebellious Los Angeles native possibly improve what is as close to perfection as it gets? The only way he knows how: By focusing on the fans to give them the experience he would want for himself. While that includes top-down conceptualizing like the always-excellent curation of the festival’s lineup of artists Tyler actually enjoys, it also means ensuring that everything from the facilities to the food stands out, meeting the best-in-class standard Flog Gnaw has set for the past ten years — and will hopefully continue to do so for many more. Here are five takeaways from the tenth Flog Gnaw.

Philip Cosores

Getting To The Festival Is A Breeze

Tyler rarely puts out environmental messages or talks about civic duty — that would be at odds with his image as a devil-may-care, mischievous menace — but his priorities are plain from the moves he makes in support of the Flog Gnaw festivities. This year, the festival partnered with LA’s local public transit network to provide a free shuttle from the city’s historical Union Station to the festival grounds at Dodger Stadium, where the fest returned for the fourth year. While Metro itself sort of dropped the ball with this due to some needed improvements on one of the rail lines (specifically, the one I use to get to Union Station), necessitating an additional transfer, the shuttle service somehow managed to corral those hundreds of exuberant 20-somethings (and one grumpy 40-year-old) and keep things moving along fairly efficiently. There aren’t too many other local festivals as ideally situated, but I would love to see more of them duplicate similar services.

Philip Cosores

Dodger Stadium Is The Perfect Venue

In the four years since the festival moved to Dodger Stadium from Exposition Park, gradual improvements to its layout and grounds have made it the ideal venue for such an event. Last year, someone figured out that sticking all three stages in the north parking lots offered the best version of the layout, and this year, that stuck, with the Camp Stage situated in the center of the event space, flanked by the Flog stage to the west and Gnaw to the east. There’s still plenty of space to move around, and the landscape is dotted with even more rides and games, giving the festival a true carnival feel. While in line for the shuttle, I overheard nearby attendees discussing whether VIP passes were worth it, ultimately coming to the conclusion that there’s plenty of bang for your buck thanks to the VIP-exclusive rides, which had shorter lines — although only two stages have dedicated VIP sections (Gnaw is situated in such a way that it really wouldn’t make sense to add one there).

Themed Pop-Up Restaurants Even Make Eating Fun

While browsing social media posts about the festival, I saw quite a few posts responding to the MF DOOM’s MM..FOOD Diner menu with skepticism and derision. I assume most of these posts were just from commenters salty they weren’t at the fest and didn’t get to try the food for themselves. Consisting of items named after tracks from DOOM’s 2004 concept album, the menu was similar in price to the other concessions around it, and each item offered enough food to feed two people. My partner and I ordered the Rap Snitch Kniches, which turned out to be chicken and waffles with a twist — the chicken was INSIDE the waffle. This is momentous stuff. This needs to be a real restaurant, stat. Another artist-themed offering was Pusha T’s Grindin coffee, which cleverly tied into the artist’s persona in a similar way.

Meanwhile, even with the usual assortment of festival foods, we never waited in line for anything for longer than 10 or 20 minutes (the line for MM..FOOD was the longest, but the meal was in our hands almost as soon as we ordered it). The food booths are also ideally located to keep lines from overlapping any of the activations or stage crowds, so it was as close to a hassle-free experience as it gets. I would like to see more tables, but logistically, I understand potential safety hazards.

Philip Cosores

The Merch Is Enviable And Actually Looks Great

Flog Gnaw has always presented enviable merch options in comparison to a lot of other festivals. While it’s likely that not everybody in the fest’s target demographic can justify the cost of a $100 sweatshirt commemorating their attendance, the designs are undoubtedly among the coolest I’ve seen at the 20 or so fests I’ve covered in my time at Uproxx. My partner came away with one that cheekily reads “Save The Bees,” which doubles as both another ironic-but-sincere environmental message endorsed by Tyler and a reference to the cover of his 2017 breakout album Flower Boy. I still have yet to come away with a stuffed Tyler toy (there are all kinds of different ones, from his ski-masked Goblin alter ego to more recent album era-inspired looks), but perhaps next year will be my year. Meanwhile, even the general stores dotting the grounds had some unexpected treats; I haven’t seen another festival selling collapsible stools before, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they started showing up at more events in the future — and let me tell you, they are lifesavers no matter how old you are.

The Music Remains The Star Of The Show

The thing that makes Tyler so distinctive as an artist is that he’s such a huge fan of music, in general. Too often in hip-hop, there’s this cool-guy mindset: “I don’t really listen to music.” And I guess it’s an effort not to look cringe or like you’ve been inspired by someone else — you’re a one-of-one, completely original — which is why T not doing that is so dang cool (and kind of ironic, considering his seeming abhorrence of anything cringe or too sincere). He listens to everything; you can experience a sampling of his personal playlist by hanging around the Camp stage between sets. And he knows that just because you enjoy the jazz styling of André 3000’s latest album, doesn’t mean you won’t also get absolutely wrecked to Playboi Carti or Denzel Curry’s approach to thrash rap.

Philip Cosores

The same crowd that vibes out to Omar Apollo can get roasted by Vince Staples (do not, under any circumstances, forget that rap is Black music). Syd and Orion Sun can offer dreamy R&B, Raye can demonstrate her vocal virtuoso, Earl Sweatshirt can get deeply lyrical, and Mase can bring out the hits — some of which are older than half of Flog Gnaw’s attendees — and all of them can resonate with the diverse, eclectic crowd (some more than others, true). The weekend’s standouts, in addition to the above-mentioned names, were Doechii, who continued her campaign for rap’s upper echelons, and Sexyy Red, who made believers of even the most skeptical listeners, according to the results of my recap-related ear hustling. Oh, yeah, Tyler performed a bunch of his new songs from Chromakopia, and I can’t wait for that tour. “Sticky” is a hit.

Undoubtedly, the coolest part for me was seeing a full orchestra paying homage to the masked man who unexpectedly inspired so many of the artists who appeared on this bill, MF DOOM. There’s no way to describe it for those who weren’t there, but the vibes were immaculate — and elevated by an appearance from Erykah Badu, fresh off her main stage set, to reproduce the interpolation from his signature hit “Doomsday.” Also, yes, there was an actual accordion. For me, the set encapsulated the best thing about Camp Flog Gnaw: acknowledging the past, enjoying the present, and imagining a(n Odd) future where both can coexist and complement each other. That future is always on the way, thanks to Tyler The Creator.

Tyler The Creator Throws It Back With Sexyy Red In Wild Camp Flog Gnaw Performance Clip

Tyler The Creator wrapped up day one of his Camp Flog Gnaw festival at Los Angeles’ Dodger Stadium yesterday (Saturday, November 16), and let’s just say it was absolutely electric. And gooey, but we feel like there’s a better word for that. In addition to a killer performance, the Hawthorne native also brought out some very special guests, including ScHoolboy Q, Doechii, Daniel Caesar, and the one and only Sexyy Red. She came out to perform her CHROMAKOPIA collab “Sticky” and threw it back for the roaring crowd, with Tyler hyping her up and even twerking beside her before Lil Wayne’s verse, who was sadly not present.

It’s the wrap-up for a great week for Tyler, The Creator, as his new album went No. 1 again and might even snag a third week atop the Billboard 200 albums chart. However, that doesn’t mean that the past few days didn’t roll around without some challenges. He recently had a not-so-friendly interaction with pestering paparazzi at GQ‘s Men Of The Year party in Los Angeles. We can’t blame T for feeling paranoid, even though that song is about more than just people obsessed with your fame.

It’s also great to see Sexyy Red have fun and show off with someone as big as Tyler, The Creator, although her superstardom came as no surprise to some of the culture’s OGs. “‘You a motherf***ing star,’” Snoop Dogg recently recalled telling her when they first met. “‘You got star power. I love you.’ She said, ‘Unc, you real as a motherf***er.’ I said, ‘Yeah, I f**k with you, cuz.’ We partying, having a good time. And I said, ‘One thing about me. I’m from the old generation, but I don’t hate on y’all. I may critique, but when I see y’all, I’ma give you love.’ And I’ma tell you face to face, ‘You doing an amazing job. Here’s some things you could do better.’ But I’m never going to say, ‘You wack, you garbage, you trash, you f***ing the industry.’ I’m never going to say that.”

Meanwhile, Tyler, The Creator has one more day of Camp Flog Gnaw to impress with, and we’re sure it will be an amazing time. Once it’s all over, he will likely continue to engage with fans about CHROMAKOPIA and keep the excitement up for more spectacular performances on the way.

Snoop Dogg Always Knew That Sexyy Red Had “Star Power”

Snoop Dogg has been an elder in hip-hop for such a long time that he’s been through a few different “new generations” as a legendary mainstay. As such, he witnessed a lot of hot new rappers come and go over the years, and even works closely with some of the most successful ones out of newer schools. So when Tha Doggfather tells you that you’ve got that special something, you can rest assured it comes from a place of heavy experience. Moreover, during a recent interview with Vibe, he recalled meeting Sexyy Red for the first time and how he showed her love from the jump as a talented artist with a lot of potential to make it big.

“‘You a motherf***ing star,’” Snoop Dogg recalled telling Sexyy Red in the Vibe conversation clip uploaded Wednesday (November 13).

Snoop Dogg Recalls Meeting Sexyy Red For The First Time

At around the same time as this interview clip went live, Sexyy Red shared a video of her and Snoop Dogg vibing out at an outdoors party to her track “SkeeYee.” Maybe she will end up contributing a feature to his upcoming Missionary album with Dr. Dre

But Snoop Dogg also shows love to the younger generation through many other ways that aren’t just through hip-hop. For example, he’s one of a few rappers who collaborated with the Fortnite Battle Royale video game for their Chapter 2 Remix update, becoming an in-game character with special zones, a boss mode, and more. It’s always great to see the Long Beach legend give back, and we’re excited for what he shouts out next.

Travis Scott, Sexyy Red And More Celebrate Young Thug’s Freedom

It’s Halloween for most of the world, but it’s Young Thug’s day for hip hop fans. The rapper was set free on Thursday after a lengthy trial. He was given 15 years probation, and a host of conditions upon release, but he was released, and that’s what matters. The hip hip world showed their support for Young Thug all throughout his trial. Other rappers made it clear that they were desperate to see their peer released, so he could assume his legendary career. Now that it’s happened, the celebration has begun.

Sexyy Red, a rapper who was repeatedly cited Young Thug as her “twin,” took to Twitter to voice her happiness. “They let twin out,” she exclaimed. Jay Electronica took a wordier, Jay Electronica-esque approach in his tweet. He praised Allah and reminded Thugger to make the most of his second chance. “Praise be to Allah they let this man come home,” he wrote. “Be Great Slime.” DJ Mustard also got in on the celebration by noting that Halloween has been topped. “Thug free,” he tweeted out. “What a day!” NBA athlete James Harden voiced his support more subtly. He tweeted out a snake to represent the rapper’s “slime” aesthetic.

Travis Scott Called Young Thug His “Brudda”

The most notable show of love, however, came from Travis Scott. Thug and Travis Scott rose to fame around the same time. Thugger appeared on Scott’s breakout mixtape, Days Before Rodeo. He’s stellar on the track “Mamacita,” which gained renewed interest during his trial. The mixtape was uploaded to streaming, which exposed it to a brand new generation. “Mamacita” also featured an exemplary verse from Thug’s friend Rich Homie Quan, who died on September 5. Young Thug and the Astroworld superstar have a particularly strong bond.

Unsurprisingly, Travis Scott posted a photo alongside Thugger. He posted the photo on his Instagram Story with the caption: “My brudda otw home.” The man who narrated Travis Scott’s first album, Rodeo, also stepped in with words of support. T.I. posted his own photos of Thug on Twitter. “Welcome Home lil bruddah,” he wrote. “It’s been too long… Time to get back to it!!!” T.I. had previously gone on record to state that he would make sure Thug was taken care of when he got home. Thankfully, he’s home a lot sooner than anybody anticipated. Check out additional celeb posts below.

Man Impersonating Sexyy Red’s Manager Arrested For Alleged Sexual Battery

It just got “Sticky” for Sexyy Red. Police recently arrested a man pretending to be her manager on alleged armed sexual battery and false imprisonment with a weapon charges on Tuesday (October 29), according to WPLG Local 10 in Florida. Moreover, Vladimir Joseph claimed that he worked an event for Sexyy Red at a strip club near Miami. He reportedly approached a woman outside of the venue and said his name was “Alexander Beamer,” claiming to be the St. Louis femcee’s manager. “Vladimir Joseph is not her manager,” a representative for Sexyy relayed to WPLG.

The story goes that the alleged victim and three men got into the man pretending to be Sexyy Red’s manager’s car and drove to his house, where he allegedly forced her to ingest cocaine at gunpoint. “Take it or I will kill you,” the 41-year-old allegedly remarked. Per the police report, Joseph forced the woman upstairs and allegedly sexually assaulted her “for several hours.” He allegedly “recorded her performing sex acts on him” and then “forced the victim to take a shower and continued sexually assaulting her.” The “You Don’t Love Me” rapper seemingly hasn’t addressed this at press time.

Afterwards, Vladimir Joseph allegedly sent the victim home in a Lyft. His provision of ride details helped her identify Joseph and pinpoint the alleged assault’s location to law enforcement. The man claiming to be Sexyy Red’s manager surrendered to police and presumably remains without bond at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center. As for Sexyy herself, she had a couple of big releases in recent weeks that kept her busy. She even got love from Taylor Swift for her GloRilla collab, “WHATCHU KNO ABOUT ME.”

Meanwhile, Sexyy Red recently called out people assuming she had a fling with controversial OnlyFans creator Gucci Third Leg. “Why every time y’all see me with a n***a, y’all think I’m f***ing him?” she asked on social media. “Like, can I just chill? Can I hang out? God, I’m a grown-a** gangster superhero. Leave me alone.” Hopefully the rest of the year doesn’t include any more controversies or harrowing situations regarding the 26-year-old.

Tyler The Creator’s New Song ‘Sticky’ Is So Stacked, Featuring GloRilla, Sexyy Red, Lil Wayne, Timbaland, And Young Buck

This Monday morning is a bit unusual, as music fans had something to look forward to at 6 a.m. ET: The release of a high-profile new album. Tyler The Creator just dropped his new project, Chromakopia, this morning, but not at midnight as is usual. As he explained, “YOU CAN LISTEN TO IT WHEN YOU WAKE UP, YOU DONT HAVE TO DEPRIVE YOURSELF OF SLEEP FOR SOMETHING THAT IS GOING TO BE THERE WHEN YOU WAKE UP.”

Well, people have woken up and listened, and one track many have been immediately struck by is “Sticky,” due to its tremendous star power.

The songs, as displayed on streaming platforms, do not have credited featured artists. But, credited as songwriters on the track, according to the song’s credits as seen on Spotify, are GloRilla, Sexyy Red, Lil Wayne, Timbaland, and Young Buck.

Others have noted that artists also featured across the project include Childish Gambino, Daniel Caeser, Teezo Touchdown, ScHoolBoy Q, and Doechii. Tyler hosted a listening party for the album last night, but as for actual performances, he has a tour that is set to kick off in February 2025.

Listen to “Sticky” above.

Chromakopia is out now via Columbia. Find more information here.

Gucci Mane And Sexyy Red Link Up For Bouncy Single “You Don’t Love Me”

Gucci Mane and Sexyy Red are musically compatible in too many ways to count. Sexyy Red grew up listening to Gucci, and both have a knack for making catchy, anthemic trap bangers. Sexyy literally has a song called “Female Gucci Mane.” It was only a matter of time before these two hopped on a song, and we can happily confirm that “You Don’t Love Me” delivers on the hype. The song is built around a catchy, guitar-based instrumental. It sounds retro in a lot of ways, but without veering into dated territory.

Gucci Mane takes center stage with his opening verse. There’s a lose connectivity to the chorus and the verses in terms of a story, but “You Don’t Love Me” is all about the vibes. Gucci Mane sounds smooth as ever over the aforementioned riff. Sexyy Red handles the hyped-up chorus, and her delivery makes for a nice change of pace from Gucci’s mellow sound. She also takes over the song during the second verse, and does her typically Sexyy Red thing. It’s going to sound good blasting out of speakers, which is what both Gucci and Sexyy are going for. We love it.

Let us know what you think of this brand-new track, in the comments section down below. Additionally, stay tuned to HNHH for the latest news and updates from around the music world. We will continue to keep you informed on all of your favorite artists and their upcoming projects.

Sexyy Red Wishes Drake A Happy Birthday And Fans Can’t Help But Speculate

Happy 38th birthday to Drake, who is getting well-wishes from fans, loved ones, and industry peers alike. One particular collaborator was very quick to wish him a special day, and this reignited some previous speculation that’s no more verified on the gossip train. “Happy Birthday to one of the nicest most humblest person I kno LOVE U BD ENJOY YO MONTH,” Sexyy Red captioned a photo dump of her and the 6ix God on Instagram. As you can see in the comments section under the post, which you can check out below, a lot of fans started to speculate on their relationship again… But that’s part of the meme.

Furthermore, they leaned into these rumors with the “Rich Baby Daddy” music video, along with many other jokes and references to each other online. Still, Drake and Sexyy Red don’t actually seem to be romantically involved, so it’s clearly just a nice promo boost and a way to generate conversation online, especially if the St. Louis femcee is still calling the Toronto superstar her “baby daddy.” What’s more is that these aren’t the only relationship rumors surrounding her… Yet that’s a story for another time.

Sexyy Red’s Birthday Post For Drake: See Comments For Reactions

As for other Drake news, there’s still a lot of conversation going on around the Kendrick Lamar battle, including the OVO mogul’s supposed reactions to it. Mal recently claimed that the now-38-year-old laughed at one of K.Dot’s “Not Like Us” bars, namely “What OVO for, the Other Vaginal Option?” Some Kendrick fans are no closer to identifying what this “other vaginal option” is, and what he was trying to say with the bar. Regardless, it’s a cheeky one, and despite Drizzy’s distaste for the diss track relayed on “The Heart Part 6,” he can at least chuckle at some of the jabs.

Meanwhile, Sexyy Red is not just showing love to Drake, but also getting love from other global sensations. Taylor Swift recently shouted out her GloRilla collab “WHATCHU KNO ABOUT ME,” and she was very happy to hear this. Hopefully Sexyy and her “baby daddy” link up for some more catchy collaborations in the future.
