Travis Scott’s “Circus Maximus”: What We Know

Earlier this week, Travis Scott confirmed the release date for his highly anticipated fourth studio album, Utopia. This Friday, July 28, Scott will release his first album in five years. Throughout 2023, the Houston rap superstar has been heavily promoting his next album. Scott has posted billboards in major cities and carried around a Utopia briefcase. He also announced a performance at the Egyptian Pyramids, which has since been canceled. With Utopia season in full effect, the Astroworld rapper recently revealed the first of five album covers that are available for purchase as bundle packages.

Continuing to build buzz for the Utopia’s release, Travis Scott shared the album’s lead single, “K-pop,” featuring The Weeknd and Bad Bunny, along with a music video that teased a potential stadium tour. During his latest performance at Rolling Loud Miami, Scott declared that it was his last ever Astroworld-era set, announcing Utopia’s release date and a film titled Circus Maximus. The movie will premiere ahead of the album in theaters on Thursday, July 27. While the film’s release coincides with Scott’s album drop, information about the film itself is limited. Here is what we know so far about Travis Scott’s Circus Maximus

Coming Soon To Theaters

Travis Scott’s previous film was a short documentary. He released Look Mom, I Can Fly on Netflix in 2019. His latest movie, Circus Maximus, will be screened in AMC theaters nationwide. According to Scott’s website, these screenings will occur over the next few days in tandem with Utopia’s release. Most of the showings are set to happen on July 27, with a select few taking place on August 1. The bottom of the movie’s webpage specifies that “additional screenings are TBA.” A24’s logo appears on the film’s poster, but the entertainment company says the movie is not theirs, according to Variety. Regarding the film itself, Circus Maximus has a run-time of one hour and fifteen minutes.

The Movie’s Title Takes Inspiration From Ancient Rome

While not officially confirmed, the title of Travis Scott’s upcoming film likely takes its name Circus Maximus from ancient Rome. Latin for “largest circus,” the Circus Maximus was once a venue for chariot racing back in ancient Roman times. It was a spectacle of the Roman Empire, located between the Aventine and Palatine hills of the city near the Roman Forum. Today, the area once used for chariot racing is now a public park in the center of Rome. The short trailer for the movie does not show the actual Circus Maximus in the city. However, there does seem to be some sort of connection to ancient ruins. There are glimpses of Travis performing in what looks like the Amphitheater of Pompeii.

He Released A Trailer

The 34-second trailer for Circus Maximus does not reveal much information about what the film is actually about. It features a sequence of visuals, including establishing and action shots and clips of Travis Scott himself. The music featured in the trailer could potentially be on Utopia, but it is unclear as there are no vocals from Scott. Based on Travis’s history of elaborate album rollouts, the film will likely embody a unique aesthetic that he tends to create with each of his projects. So far, it is not known what the film is about or what correlation it has with the Utopia. Until the movie comes out, this is all we know so far about Travis Scott’s Circus Maximus. Travis Scott’s Biggest Songs

Since his studio debut Rodeo in 2015, Travis Scott has become one of the most popular rappers in the world. The Houston native’s ethereal trap sound has led to critical acclaim and some of the biggest hit songs over the last few years. Scott has recently teased a fourth album, Utopia, which the rapper is scheduled to release in June of this year. Here’s a look at some of Travis Scott’s biggest songs to date.

6. “90210” (2015)

Scott’s “90210” was not featured as a single on Rodeo. However, the song is one of the album’s standouts and is Scott’s self-professed favorite song from the project. Despite “90210” not being a single, it has the second-highest streams on the album behind “Antidote,” according to Streaming Masters. The song features background vocals from Kacy Hill and details Scott’s move from Houston to Los Angeles, as well as Travis’s experiences with family, women, and drugs after achieving fame. A year after the release of “90210,” Scott released a music video for the song that depicts the rapper as an action figure. Many fans regard “90210” and its visuals as Scott’s best of all time.

5. “Pick Up The Phone” (2016)

“Pick up the phone” is the second single from Scott’s sophomore album Birds in the Trap Sing McKnight. The song features Young Thug and Quavo. Much like “Antidote,” Scott released “pick up the phone” months before the album. Travis initially leaked the song on his Soundcloud because both he and Thug’s labels would not agree to release it. Regardless, the song ended up being a hit as it peaked at No. 43 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and was certified double platinum. At the time, “pick up the phone” was Quavo’s highest-charting solo effort and also one of the highest-charting songs for both Scott and Thug. The music video for “pick up the phone” was also released in 2016 at the same time as the video for “90210.”

4. “Antidote” (2015)

By 2015, Travis Scott was well-known in the Hip-Hop community for his producer abilities and mixtapes Days Before Rodeo and Owl Pharaoh. However, it was not until the release of the single “Antidote” that Scott gained mainstream attention. “Antidote” was the second single on Rodeo, yet Scott did not originally intend for the song to be on the album. He released the song months before Rodeo; however, its popularity led to its placement on the album. “Antidote” has an atmospheric production and drug-induced lyrics that captivated fans and helped establish Scott’s unique sound. “The song peaked at No. 16 on the US Billboard Hot 100 list and is certified quadruple platinum.

3. “HIGHEST IN THE ROOM”(2019)

In 2019, Travis Scott released the single “HIGHEST IN THE ROOM” to great fanfare. Scott debuted the song during his set at the Rolling Loud festival in Miami. After its release, it became Scott’s second No. 1 hit single after “SICKO MODE.” The rapper released a remix of the song in December 2019 that featured Rosalia and Lil Baby. The song’s remix is featured on the Cactus Jack label’s compilation album Jackboys. Scott also released a music video for “HIGHEST IN THE ROOM” which currently has over 500 million views on YouTube. The video reflects the song’s drug-induced lyrics with psychedelic visuals and depicts Scott on the top of a building in a futuristic city.

2. “Goosebumps” (2016)

Travis Scott released “goosebumps” as the third single from Birds in the Trap Sing McKnight, and the song has since amassed over two billion streams, according to Streaming Masters. “Goosebumps” was the most successful single from Scott’s sophomore effort, and much of that is due to Kendrick Lamar’s feature. The Scott and Lamar combination may have seemed strange to many fans at the time, as the two rappers operate in two different lanes of Hip-Hop. However, their styles blended perfectly on the track. “Goosebumps” peaked at No. 32 on the US Billboard Hot 100, and as of 2018, the song is certified 4x platinum. Travis also broke the Guinness World Record for most consecutive song performances during a show with “goosebumps” after playing it 15 times in a row in 2017.

1. “SICKO MODE” (2018)

Perhaps Travis Scott’s most famous song is the third single from his album Astroworld, “SICKO MODE.” The track features Drake and has amassed over 2 billion streams, according to Streaming Masters. “SICKO MODE” features three beat switches as the song begins with Drake before the beat drops for Travis’ verse. Then, the two go back and forth at the end of the track. Rolling Stone Magazine declared the song to be the highlight of Astroworld, and many critics have held the track to high acclaim. “SICKO MODE” was also Scott’s first No. 1 hit and received nominations for Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Song at the Grammy. Scott also performed the song at the Superbowl LIII halftime show.

Travis Scott Announces The ‘Road To Utopia’ Las Vegas Residency

Travis Scott has been slowly ramping up his performance schedule following last year’s Astroworld tragedy, but now it seems as though the “Sicko Mode” rapper is pushing forward full steam ahead. Scott just announced a residency in Las Vegas called “Road To Utopia” that begins on September 17th at the Zouk Nightclub at Resorts World Las Vegas.

If Zouk sounds familiar, this is where Scott made a surprise appearance following the 2022 Billboard American Music Awards show at the MGM Grand in May.

“Travis had a surprise performance at the club and the energy in the room was amazing,” Ronn Nicolli, the CMO of Resorts Las Vegas said in a statement captured by Billboard. “The crowd was shocked to see Travis suddenly appear on stage. We had such a great experience working with him and the team, and we knew he would be a perfect fit within the Zouk family.”

The club touts Scott’s residency as a “mind-bending, first-of-its-kind nightclub residency experience.” It utilizes high-tech audiovisuals, including the “Mothership” lighting system with a roving ceiling turns the room into a kaleidoscope of sorts. Scott will join other artists who also have residencies at Zouk, like Zedd, Tiesto, G-Eazy, DJ Snake, and others. It’s a fairly decorated list for the club that hasn’t even been open for a year yet.

Scott is slated to make seven appearances at Zouk, with tickets for the first show on September 17th already on sale. Curiously, general admission tickets are $50 for “ladies” and $75 for “gentlemen.” Scott’s residency is slated to continue beyond 2022 as well.
