Ashanti’s Dad Recalls Nelly Asking To Marry His Daughter In Heartfelt Baby Shower Clip: Watch

Ashanti’s dad revealed that Nelly asked him for permission to marry his daughter while speaking at the couple’s baby shower, last weekend. A clip of the speech has been circulating on social media in the days since. The two, who reconciled last year after a decade apart, are expecting their first child together.

“We had a discussion about him wanting to marry her. We had a little brief conversation,” Ashanti’s dad, Ken-Kaide Thomas Douglas, recalled. “For me, it’s very special for a man in this era to ask for someone’s hand [in marriage], especially your daughter’s. I was very impressed with the fact that you asked.” He concluded: “I’m glad things worked out for you. God’s way will always happen best.”

When The Shade Room shared the clip on Instagram, fans were loving the wholesome moment. “The way Im in here cheesin for and at them mannn!! I love this for them,” one user wrote. “I was bisexual my entire life, and then I came out as a lesbian almost four years ago now,” they said. “But when I realized, recently actually, all of the f–king elevation in my life that has come from de-centering men in every f–king area of it … when I prioritized women and also just centered myself and women? When all the bad b—hes decide what planet we’re going to after we f–k this one, invite me, because I will thrive.”

From there, they fired back at fans bringing up their past relationships with men from when they were much younger. “Bringing up the fact that I had a child, or bringing up ex-boyfriends from four years ago or before, bringing up situations from when I was 20? I’m 29. I will be 30 next year,” they said. “I don’t know why there’s this inability to fathom that I’m a raging lesbian. And yes, my music is gay! Who I perform to and for is the gays. Nelly and Ashanti hosted their baby shower over the weekend, Fat Joe confirmed in a post on Instagram on Sunday. Reflecting on the event, he shared a photo of himself with the couple, which he captioned: “Today we had a Baby Shower, i love you my sister I’m sooooooo happy for yall guys GOD IS GREAT.” The two are expecting their first child together.

Nelly and Ashanti originally began dating in the early 2000s but split up in 2014. Nearly a decade later, they reconciled and are getting married. Speaking with Entertainment Tonight, last month, Ashanti revealed that Nelly proposed while they were in bed watching TV together. “I cried, I gave him the biggest hug and kiss ever,” she recalled, “I FaceTimed everyone I know… I was overjoyed and shocked and surprised and happy kind of like all in one.” She also explained how things are different this time around. “I think just we both are so passionate about working and about building family,” she said. “We are so, so aligned.”

Druski was one of the many guests of honor at the 2024 BET Awards last night (Sunday, June 30) and had some interesting remarks for interviewer Carl Lamarre for Billboard on the red carpet. They started off just talking about feeling blessed, their favorite Usher songs, and which artists the comedian would include on a “Best Of” album (these are Drake, Heavy D, and Justin Bieber, by the way). However, they also spoke on some rumor mill updates about him and Rubi Rose breaking up, and his response to the matter is pretty vague. “Hey man… Aye, that what they said, you heard that? Now I say, man, I don’t know, man. You know, I’m just here blessed and highly favored, man, you know.”

Furthermore, fans learned of this apparent split from Rubi Rose herself, as she indicated her relationship status with Druski during a street interview at Paris Fashion Week. “Um, f**k love,” she remarked when asked her favorite love song. “Okay, I’m single, guys.” We don’t really know what happened between them, but we know that they got back to business as usual in their social media presences. He’s as funny as ever online, and Rose is as lusted-after as ever, as well.

Still, if this news really is true, then we’re sure that Druski and Rubi Rose have found plenty of ways to distract themselves and move on from all this. In the former’s case, this seemed to almost line up with his recent sleepover stream with Kai Cenat and Kevin Hart, as it took place shortly before news of the alleged breakup broke. That was a pretty hilarious affair, and one that fans will likely continue to reference and look back on. Hopefully it’s not the last crossover between those entertainers.

Even LeBron James had to call in to join the fun, so you know that they had a good time. Meanwhile, Druski and Rubi Rose are still kind of up in the air right now thanks to the former’s comments at the BET Awards. Kehlani recently revealed the “craziest” thing they’ve ever caught someone doing in a relationship and based on the timeline they gave, fans think it was PartyNextDoor. They addressed the topic while speaking about their new song, “Better Not,” during an interview with Nessa on Hot 97. The song is included on their new album, Crash.

The interviewer begins by describing the track as “alarming.” In the lyrics, they rap: “I almost died the night when I caught you in somebody’s Benz (Ooh, ooh) / I better not catch you doing that sh*t again / And you’re not wrong, ’cause you’re not mine / I would choose this dance with you in every life / Though we’re just a little more than friends / I better not catch you doing that sh*t again.”
