Sade Adu Makes Her Grand Return On Our New “R&B Season” Playlist Update

Even though the end of the year doesn’t yield much new music, our latest R&B Season playlist update is here to round up the best of the best recent drops within or adjacent to the genre. In fact, we have a massive one to talk about this week, as Sade Adu dropped her first official release in about six years, “Young Lion.” It’s for the TRANSA compilation from the non-profit organization Red Hot, which featured many transgender artists and focuses on the community. Moreover, this song is dedicated to the singer’s transgender son, and it’s a gorgeously atmospheric and calming cut.

Elsewhere in the R&B world, we also wanted to shout out Roy Woods for his brief but still captivating new project, Rolling Stone. It has a sole feature from 03 Greedo, so the vocalist carries his own weight for much of the tracklist and indulges in the genre fusions he’s well-known for. For example, one of the highlights on here is “Solo” thanks to its passionate and overwhelming vocal performance and how it contrasts with the airy instrumentation and steady drums.

Also, we’d be remiss not to mention the new deluxe version of Khalid’s Sincere, which adds a couple more collaborative cuts and solo records to the original tracklist. These include “Personal” with Normani, “Make It Up To You” with Ayra Starr, and “MIA” featuring Chlöe. That last one in particular is one of the bouncier songs on the whole LP, and the crisp percussion adds a pretty fun vibe to a tune that would otherwise sound more melancholy. Not only that, but it certainly helps that they’re both very talented singers with plenty of chemistry on this particular cut.

But the end of 2024 isn’t just giving us some new R&B cuts to enjoy. Our latest Fire Emoji playlist update also rounded up the highlights of the week within the hip-hop world, including the new single from Lil Baby, “Touchdown.” He just announced his new album Wham for January 3 of next year, and this more menacing and hard-hitting track indicates some bangers on the way. Hopefully he delivers!

Kendrick Lamar & SZA Make Magic On Our New “R&B Season” Playlist Update: Stream

Welcome back to our R&B Season playlist, the latest update for which has some of the very best genre-adjacent releases that came out this week. We have a big release to talk about that you’ve probably already bumped, and that’s obviously the new Kendrick Lamar album, GNX. While it’s mostly pretty fiery songs and performances, there are some softer cuts on here that are also excellent, two of which feature SZA. “luther” in particular is a very tender, woozy, and calming jam with a wonderful sample flip, gorgeous progressions, and some awesome interplay between both vocalists that we loved to hear back from after so long.

Next up is the new single from Savannah Ré, “Sex With My Ex.” As you can probably tell from the title, it’s a pretty conflicted push-and-pull lyrically, and one whose soft piano keys and often intruding sample kind of reflect that sense of complication. The vocal performance is pretty smoky, but it definitely has its more impressive runs that emphasize Ré’s melodies. Overall, it’s a pretty dark and sensual cut that might’ve benefitted from more involved percussion, but their stark sound as it is works just fine, too.

Finally, we wanted to give a shoutout to the Unlocked edition of the British R&B group FLO’s latest album, Access All Areas. They have some interesting remixes, guest performances, and re-imaginings that weren’t there on the original effort, including some fitting and charismatic performances from the Bailey sisters, Chlöe and Halle, on a new version of “Soft.” It’s exactly what it sounds like, as light snaps, simple synth pads, and tight vocal harmonies give a lot of boisterous flair to an otherwise pleasant soundscape.

However, if you’re looking for something more lyrically involved and hard-hitting, make sure to stay up to date on all the latest hip-hop releases. To check out new cuts from Cordae’s latest album The Crossroads and more hot singles like Ray Vaughn and Isaiah Rashad’s new collab, check out our Fire Emoji playlist update from last week in the “Read More” section down below. Summer Walker Pours Her Heart Out On Our New “R&B Season” Playlist Update: Stream

As October comes to a close, our latest R&B Season playlist update rounded up the best of the best genre-related cuts that dropped this week to give you some new jams for the spooky season. First off, Summer Walker made her return with her new single “Heart Of A Woman,” which contains an unsurprisingly soulful and soothing vocal performance. A relationship is on the rocks here lyrically, and the instrumental highlight here is a deliciously woozy synth line that falls really well in the background. Elsewhere, stark drums and watery synth pads flesh the cut out to create a pretty intoxicating atmosphere.

Keeping those sultry R&B vibes up is the latest record from Shanuka, “Wicked” with Wakai. This is even more of a slow-burner, as the choppy but resonant bass tone gives the song a languid but wholly hypnotizing feel that’s bolstered by dreamy synths and some percussive embellishments. There’s also a nasal rap verse on here that fits the cut’s smoky vibe like a glove, amping up the lust and addictive desire that the lyrics display. In other words, it’s a great late night drive track.

As for more tender offerings on R&B Season this week, Fridayy came through with the lush and passionate single “Back To You.” Thanks to some gorgeous background vocals, light piano keys, his trademark deep voice, and some varied drums on the song, this dramatizes an infatuation with a lot of personality and steadily building melodies. If you’re looking for something a bit more akin to a hip-hop beat, then perhaps Roy Woods’ latest record “Hold Still” will be right up your alley. But don’t think that he doesn’t still come through with some hazy vocal harmonies and melodic dominance.

Finally, we wanted to give a shoutout to AUDRÉ’s new song “U on U” for its striking but minimal guitar lines that do a lot with a little. They anchor the rest of the single’s elements thanks to their presence in the mix, but the highlight here is still her vocal performance. Let us know what your favorite R&B Season playlist pick was this week, as well as what else we missed, down in the comments section below. Tyla Expands Her Vision On Our New “R&B Season” Playlist Update: Stream

If you’re looking for new jams to add to your rotation, we’ve got you covered with our latest R&B Season playlist update to round up the best of the best new releases this week, whether it’s within or adjacent to the genre. Leading the way is the expanded version of Tyla’s self-titled debut album, which contains a couple of new cuts at the top of the tracklist. Most notably, “PUSH 2 START” fuses all the styles that she’s been a star for as of late: Afrobeat, amapiano, R&B, and pop. In addition, the catchy flows and vocal harmonies give this record a larger than life feel while still being intimate.

Speaking of expanded deluxe editions on R&B Season, Jorja Smith has offered just that by adding some new remixes and re-imaginations of her falling or flying LP. What’s more is that they also vary when it comes to genre, with some alternate versions here indulging in jungle, garage, or even reggae. As for the “Lately” remix with Craig David, the straightforward R&B cut doesn’t deviate much from the original. But David does add some engaging vocal chemistry to one of the smoothest tracks on the original full-length.

Also, we wanted to shout out Isaiah Falls’ new two-pack LUCKY ME, which contains the solo cut “HAVE MY BABIES?” and “BUTTERFLIES” with Joyce Wrice. The latter is a very sultry and soft-spoken collaboration that drenches its bass and synth pads in reverb and adds some other embellishments like chimes, faint strings, and fuzzy wah guitar. It’s one of the more traditional R&B songs you’ll find this week, but a nevertheless relaxing one. After all, sometimes this vibe just hits the spot like no other.

Finally, we’d be remiss not to mention Mabel’s upbeat team-up with Ty Dolla $ign, “Stupid Dumb.” It creates a lot of tension before finally falling into a clubby rhythm, and its minimal approach highlights each vocal performance quite well. Let us know what your favorite R&B Season pick was this week, as well as what else we missed, down in the comments section below. Victoria Monet Dominates Our New “R&B Season” Playlist Update: Stream

R&B Season returns with the best the genre and its adjacent styles had to offer this week, with our latest update holding some curious gems. One of these is the deluxe version of Victoria Monet’s JAGUAR II, which features a couple of new tracks and a refreshing reminder of how good the original version was. We’d recommend you check out “1900’s” for a submerged, rich, and Michael-Jackson-tributing cut with a lot of personality and interesting timbral approaches. What’s more is that Monét also released a new Spotify Single with Bryson Tiller titled “We Might Even Be Falling In Love (Duet),” a reimagining of her previous song.

Next on R&B Season is “Porcelain” by JoJo, which mixes some classic soaring vocal melodies with rattling percussion and a subtle “I Wanna Rock” sample. It’s a bit of a drill flip as it goes along, but it never falls too deeply into that style to take away from the overall ethereal vibe of the track. On the other side of the spectrum, Honey Bxby’s new single “LEFT EYE” is more of a soulful cut with crisp drums and resonant string arrangements in the background. It also helps that Bxby’s charisma is very palpable here, working in some charismatic lines and vocal melodies.

Ironically enough, we have two other R&B-related deluxe editions to talk about. The first is the expanded version of BJ The Chicago Kid’s Gravy, which is even more tender now thanks to its extra additions. Also, one of 2023’s best got a revamp with Sampha’s deluxe release of Lahai. “Dancing Circles 2.0” not only speeds things up tempo-wise, but adds some frenetic drumming and gorgeous pianos to give the original song a more propulsive feel.

Finally, we wanted to shout out the latest track from City Fidelia, “Ring On Your Hand” with JYDN HILL. For the dancehall fans out there, this scratches that itch in a bit more of an icy and minimal way than usual while still emphasizing the beautiful vocal runs to bring that sunny atmosphere. Let us know what your favorite R&B Season pick was this week, as well as what else we missed, down in the comments section below. Tommy Richman Builds Album Hype On Our New “R&B Season” Playlist Update: Stream

Summer’s officially over, and we have some new jams on our latest R&B Season playlist update to round up the best new releases to usher in the fall. Starting things off is the newest single from Tommy Richman ahead of his debut album COYOTE, “WHITNEY.” As usual with his catalog, it’s a pretty funky, mid-fi, buzzy, but nonetheless charming mix of gritty percussion patterns, striking synths, an overall throwback feel, and passionate lead vocals. Some echo effects and heavy reverb slightly muddy the appeal of the DMV native’s performance here, but it’s nonetheless a compelling and exciting new approach compared to past records.

Also on our R&B Season update is the latest collaboration under 4batz’s belt, his new single “roll da dice” with Lil Baby. This is actually one of his most fleshed-out and dynamic tracks so far when it comes to the drums, which feel much more present here than on previous material. Still, the track maintains the woozy, minimally icy, and very simply atmospheric tones that you’ve probably come to expect here. Baby does his thing here, but the dreamy vibe of the song means that his contribution is more of a fitting and vibe-building background addition than a true stand-out.

Next up from the R&B-adjacent world is a distinct, acoustic, and meditative track from Chiiild, “Don’t Fade On Me.” It’s a Tom Petty cover from an Apple TV+ original series Bad Monkey celebrating his music, and takes the original cut in a much more hazy and low-key direction. Gorgeous vocal harmonies propel the track forward alongside gently strummed guitars, and some additional synth pads in the background build out the world for you to lose yourself in.

Finally, we wanted to shout out the new Chase Shakur single, “LIMERENCE.” This is probably the most classically R&B-sounding release on our playlist this week, with charismatic lead vocals, punchy drums, sultry lyricism, some soulful bass, and electronic embellishments. Let us know what your favorite R&B Season pick was this week, as well as what else we missed, down in the comments section below. The Weeknd Makes His Grand Return On Our New “R&B Season” Playlist Update: Stream

R&B Season is upon us once again, and our new playlist update is here to round up the best of the best new music releases this week. Of course, we have a massive comeback to talk about to kick things off: The Weeknd’s new single “Dancing In The Flames.” It’s the lead single to his upcoming album Hurry Up Tomorrow, which will wrap up his After Hours trilogy and his moniker as a whole. The song still has the ’80s-inspired synth-pop leanings of previous installments, but with a little more brightness when it comes to the lyrical content and the melodic and harmonic structure. Needless to say, it’s a jam.

On a more traditional R&B tip, we also wanted to shout out Leon Thomas and Ty Dolla $ign’s new single, “FAR FETCHED.” The atmospheric pads and samples, plus an earthy and groovy drum pattern, highlights their vocal chemistry even more. Eventually, piano chords come in to introduce Ty’s feature and turn the track into more of a regal and dreamy experience for a moment. While it isn’t the most game-changing thing you’ll hear this week, the songwriting makes this cut reach its potential.

As far as new albums to talk about, we finally have the next excellent release from Foushée, Pointy Heights. Even though some great highlights here like “feel like home” don’t necessarily fit completely into typical R&B aesthetics, the vocal harmonies and runs fit right at home, ironically enough. Nevertheless, there are some great indie and alt-rock fusions here that show off her creativity even more than what we’ve already heard. So if you’re looking for something more breezy and warm to extend the summer as much as you can, look no further.

In addition, we’d be remiss not to mention N3WYRKLA’s “mind now” with Skilla Baby for its peppy and charismatic fusions between catchy melodies and charismatic verses. Finally, we recommend you check out Yoko Gold’s “Nothing Like Your Lips” for a sultry slow-burner whose gentle guitars entrance its listeners. Let us know what your favorite R&B Season pick was this week, as well as what else we missed, down in the comments section below. Drake Leads The Way With Two Entries On Our “R&B Season” Playlist

Drake had been having a pretty difficult start to the year, however, it appears as though things are finally starting to look up for him. Overall, a lot of this turnaround is thanks to Gordo’s new album Diamente. Drake has two tracks on the project, and as it turns out, they both made our “R&B Season” playlist. Although he is not the only one to get onto the list. There are also entries from some of the best and brightest from the genre.

Of course, starting things off, we have the summer vibes from Gordo and Drake on the song “Sideways.” Subsequently, a few tracks down, we also included their song “Healed.” These two songs have been getting praise online, and it is easy to understand why that has been the case. Furthermore, the list also includes “High” by Jorja Smith which is yet another solid track from the songstress. We also have “Ruined Me” by Muni Long.

Drake & Gordo Deliver The Summer Vibes

Mahalia and Take A Draytrip finished things off this week with the track “Life Size.” While the R&B releases were fairly sparse this week, that will certainly change as the Fall season comes around. Either way, we’re just happy to get some slow jams for the upcoming week. Only time will tell which other R&B stars bless us with some releases this year. There are still five months left for many of these singers and songwriters to make their mark.

Let us know how you feel about these additions to the playlist, in the comments section down below. Do you believe that Drake was able to get himself out of a rut with these tracks? Or is there still a bit of work to do for him? Additionally, stay tuned to HNHH for the latest news and updates from around the music world. We will continue to keep you informed on all of your favorite artists and their upcoming projects.

Tyla Makes Her Mark On Our New “R&B Season” Playlist Update: Stream

We’re almost a quarter of the way through 2024, and this new update to our R&B Season playlist shows that there’s no signs of it slowing down. Moreover, we’ve rounded up the best of the best releases of this week adjacent to the genre, and we have a couple of albums and singles to highlight. First up is Tyla’s new self-titled album, building off of the strength of her breakout 2023 with some catchy, lush, and wavy tracks. Specifically, we want to shout out “No.1” with Tems. Both artists deliver soothing vocal performances with an infectious chorus and a lot of breezy chemistry.

Staying on the album tip, we also have a new full-length offering from SiR, HEAVY, and it’s a star-studded and expansive effort. With guest appearances from Ty Dolla $ign, Ab-Soul, Isaiah Rashad, and more -– plus plenty of solo tracks for the TDE creative to show off his talents -– this is a pretty well-rounded and passionate collection of rap and R&B songs. There’s a particular pleasant flow and approach to musicality on “POETRY IN MOTION” featuring Anderson .Paak. Furthermore, the crisp percussion and hazy guitar chords hit the ear with warm and calming ease.

Also, we have a surprising treat in the R&B world to discuss in the form of 6LACK’s new EP, No More Lonely Nights. This is an acoustic reimagining of certain songs off of the Atlanta crooner’s 2023 album Since I Have A Lover, specifically the title track, “Rent Free,” and “Inwood Hill Park.” Out of these selections, we’d really recommend the latter, with just a simple bassline backing his flow switches, moody delivery, and lyrically expounded struggle. If you haven’t spun the 31-year-old’s last record much since its release, then this is a simple but effective to gain new appreciation for its songwriting and structural strengths.

Meanwhile, Jorja Smith and Josman dropped “GO GO GO” this week off the EP of the same name with French rappers, which is more of a rock-centric jam with an anthemic chorus and earthy acoustic guitar chords. Finally, LOONY dropped her own self-titled album this week, too, on which “Show You Why” is a tender and gorgeously produced standout. Let us know down in the comments below what your favorite R&B Season inclusion was this week, as well as what else we left out. Check out our playlist above and, as always, come back to HNHH for the latest great music drops around the clock.

Ciara & Chris Brown Show “How We Roll” On Our “R&B Season” Playlist Update

Now that August is officially upon us, it’s becoming increasingly evident that the final weeks of summer are slipping away. It’s always hard to see the long days slip away into long, dark nights, but with the cool weather typically comes an increase in the number of songs on our weekly R&B Season updates. On Friday (August 4), yet another collection of new arrivals hit DSPs, and we’ve rounded up our favourites for today’s playlist. At the top of the list is the latest from Usher, “Good Good,” for which he connected with both Summer Walker and 21 Sav.

Following that comes another noteworthy collaboration from Ciara and Chris Brown. The longtime friends have connected plenty of times over the years, and the former announced that she’s got a new EP on the way later this month that could potentially hear from other R&B friends. Chloe Bailey has been holding it down on the charts for her and Halle this year as the younger of the two sisters focused on The Little Mermaid, but this weekend she shared her debut solo single, “Angel,” which finds the 23-year-old bringing listeners to tears with her beautiful voice.

From Snoh Aalegra we have “Sweet Tea,” and 6LACK joined forces with Jordan Ward for “MUSTARD.” Both of those titles would surely make welcome additions to anyone’s summertime playlist, but the track we’ve really had on repeat over the past few days comes from Jorja Smith. It’s called “GO GO GO,” and as per usual, it features beautiful vocals from the UK-based songstress.

Further down, you’ll find older additions from Burna Boy, James Blake, Beyonce, Travis Scott, Leon Thomas, Victoria Monet, and many more of the genre’s best artists. Check out this weekend’s R&B Season playlist exclusively on Spotify above. There were a lot of impressive new arrivals, but which one was your favourite?
