R. Kelly’s Former Goddaughter Takes Stand, Sayst Singer Had Sex With Her When She Was 15

R. Kelly's Lawyer

R. Kelly’s Chicago trial is underway, and received testimony from his goddaughter. According to TMZ, Kells’ goddaughter stated the singer had sex with her hundreds of times before she turned 18. She added the first time they had sex was when she was just 15 years old. She is the same alleged victim from the 2008 trial, which included a sex tape.

The alleged victim stated she gave in to the sexual relationship with the singer because she was afraid to say no. Kelly’s goddaughter is now 37 and requested the singer to be her godfather when she was 13. After that, the relationship would turn sexual.

At age 14, R. Kelly allegedly first groped her breasts for the first time at a Chicago recording studio. She stated she had sex an uncountable amount of times with Kelly before she turned 18. The locations of their encounters included Kelly’s home, studio, tour bus, and rented hotel rooms.

Stating she was intimidated and didn’t know how to say no, the alleged victim revealed the sexual relationship lasted so long it began to feel normal.

During their relationship, the woman testified that she was asked to recruit additional teenage girls for sex, and Kelly recorded an encounter when she was just 14.

Prosecutors To Court: “R. Kelly Has A Dark Side” Assaulted Minors, Paid To Cover Up Evidence

R. Kelly in Court federal child pornography

Convicted singer R. Kelly is currently on trial in his hometown of Chicago for 13 counts of child pornography and obstruction of justice. The federal prosecutors intend to prove 55-year-old Kelly had sex with minors and then paid witnesses off to get rid of the evidence.

According to the state, Kelly has a “dark side” that he kept hidden from the world behind his fame. Prosecutors allege Kelly’s “inner circle” helped the singer cover up his abuse and went to “extraordinary lengths” to do so.

R. Kelly’s Defense Fails To Ban Jurors Who’ve Seen ‘Surviving R. Kelly’

Criminal law can be tricky sometimes — especially when it comes to cases involving celebrities. After all, how can you have an impartial jury when everything the defendant has done has been widely reported? That was the argument R. Kelly’s defense wanted to use to block jurors who had seen the Surviving R. Kelly miniseries detailing his alleged misdeeds. Kelly is set to go on trial in Chicago for child pornography and obstruction of justice. However, according to NBC News, the federal judge presiding over the case was unconvinced.

U.S. District Judge Harry D. Leinenweber for the Northern District of Illinois denied Kelly’s request to block those jurors who’d seen the show, saying that because the series aired a few years ago and the possibility that anyone who’d seen it might not have finished it, it wouldn’t make sense to block them. Meanwhile, despite the defense’s worries, on a questionnaire, only nine of the 79 potential jurors they’d seen at least part of the docuseries. Once those numbers are pared down to the 12 that will actually serve on the jury, it’s unlikely that any of the jurors — or their alternates — would have seen Surviving R. Kelly.

However, considering the outcome of his New York trial for racketeering and sex trafficking, that might not help much. Kelly was convicted of the charges against him and sentenced to 30 years in prison in June. Kelly plans to appeal his sentence using the same legal team as his upcoming Chicago trial, who also successfully appealed Bill Cosby’s conviction.

R. Kelly Wants Jurors Who’ve Watched ‘Surviving R. Kelly’ To Be Disqualified

Lifetime‘s 2019 doc-series Surviving R. Kelly showed the extent of the abuse and harm the rapper caused, leading to a moral reckoning within the music world. Now as Kelly faces his second federal trial, he wants jurors who’ve seen the series to be banned from participating.

In documents obtained by TMZ, Kelly’s legal team wrote, “Any potential juror who has watched any portion of this docuseries must be disqualified for cause on whether they can be fair, too great a risk exists that such a juror would base their verdict on matters not introduced into evidence in the courtroom.”

They continued, “Any potential juror who has seen any portion of Surviving R. Kelly is prejudiced where there’s no scenario which an individual exposed to the contents of Surviving R. Kelly can be impartial.”

The trial has been hard to watch as it’s unfolded. Just last month, Kelly’s manager Donnell Russell pled guilty to stalking and harassing one of the singer’s sexual abuse victims. The 47-year-old was accused of harassing and intimidating a Jane Doe victim and her mother using emails, phone calls, and text messages to keep her from pursuing justice against Kelly. Russell was previously accused of making gun threats in an attempt to stop a screening of Surviving R. Kelly in New York City.

R. Kelly has already been sentenced to 30 years in prison for federal sex trafficking charges, but now must face a jury in Chicago on federal sex crime charges for child pornography and obstruction of justice. Kelly’s lawyers are asking now that any juror who has seen Lifetime’s “Surviving R. Kelly” documentary to be banned from the case.

In legal documents obtained by TMZ, Kelly’s defense team state that “Any potential juror who has watched any portion of this docuseries must be disqualified for cause on whether they can be fair, too great a risk exists that such a juror would base their verdict on matters not introduced into evidence in the courtroom.”

They added that any member of the jury who has seen the doc will not be able to remain impartial. “Any potential juror who has seen any portion of Surviving R. Kelly is prejudiced where there’s no scenario which an individual exposed to the contents of Surviving R. Kelly can be impartial.”

The doc, which was released in 2019 set the foundation for his arrest and imprisonment. In June, the disgraced R&B singer was sentenced to 30 years on federal sex trafficking charges in New York. Judge Ann Donnelly said after hading Kelly the 30 year sentence.

“He committed these crimes using his fame and stardom as both a shield, which prevented close scrutiny or condemnation of his actions. And a sword, which gave him access to wealth and a network of enablers to facilitate his crimes, and an adoring fan base from which to cull his victims.”

Five accusers will testify in court, including the woman who claimed Kelly urinated on her on tape at the age of 14.

Although her case was acquitted in 2008, largely due to her refusal to testify, the woman has agreed to finally speak out about her experience 14 years later.  Prosecutors claim Kelly abused her hundreds of times between 1998 and 2000, where she was as young as 13 years old.

Federal prosecutors in Kelly’s New York case were able to prove that the R&B singer led a criminal enterprise that sought to lure women, boys and girls to him for his own sexual gratification.
