As she quickly approaches her 52nd birthday, the Texas-born singer sat down with Vogue to discuss her “second coming” for the fashion magazine’s March issue. Aside from sharing her own thoughts, the outlet also spoke with several of Badu’s past collaborators and family members to truly capture the essence of her ethereal persona.

“The Healer” hitmaker’s unique style keeps fans talking. However, she says that’s not a world she dove into until her 30s and 40s. “What I had was a good understanding of look and shape, the way I did with paper dolls when I was a child,” she explained of her experience with fashion in her younger years.

“For me, it’s about seeing things coming together, like making a cake from beginning to end,” Badu went on. As her personal style continues to evolve, the mother of three has built strong working relationships with several top designers. Among them are Marni’s creative director, Francesco Risso, and Thom Browne.

The former says he was a huge fan of the vocalist’s process when they built a capsule collection together. “I’ve worked with celebrities in the past [but] with Erykah, it’s a completely new world… It’s just so innate. With her, it’s not just about making music. She’s iconic because what comes with her is a lifestyle, it’s a complete world.”

In the same story, Vogue quotes The Roots frontman Questlove’s thoughts upon seeing Badu at the 1996 Soul Train Awards in Los Angeles. “She had on the tallest turban I’ve ever seen in my life,” the producer recalls. “It was like she was hiding a three-year-old standing on her head, that’s how tall her headwrap was. I was just transfixed.” As for the “Tyrone” artist, she felt as though her fashion at the time was “really embracing what it meant to be an African here, generationally.”

“I don’t know how other family workplace dynamics go, but it’s like a real job. I have to buckle down and do what I need to do or else word is going to get to the CEO and I’m not going to get paid. Puma Curry Responds Backlash From Viral Picture With Her Mom Erykah Badu

Puma Curry responded to recent backlash after she and her mother, Erykah Badu, shared a photo on Instagram that many claimed wasn’t appropriate.

Puma Curry, Badu’s 18-year-old daughter, shared several images in tight pants to the ‘Gram but the focus was on their backside. Many quickly called out Badu. Some felt as if it was an inappropriate image while others applauded the mother and daughter.

Overall, the negative comments outweighed the positive ones, and Puma Curry, who seemingly has a future in music, addressed the situation head-on. In another post on her Instagram, she questioned what the real issue was before inviting a discussion.

“I posted a pic (not my mom)of me and my mama Badu in some cute, form-fitting pants. I’m an adult,” she wrote. “What’s the real issues? Let’s discuss.”

Some people began to further add their two cents into the comment sections. One commenter felt it was weird to see the mother-daughter duo showing out together on the ‘Gram.

The post caught the attention of Erykah Badu, who liked it and commented, “well…,” underneath. Puma Curry’s father, The D.O.C also slid in the comments to echo the exact same comment as Badu. He added, “I chose my battles carefully,” after acknowledging that Puma is a “good kid.

Later on, Erykah Badu shared Puma’s response to her Story, writing, “case closed.” Then, she shared the photo to her page. “This the pic u posted got ’em uncomfortable,” she wrote. “Wait till y’all see our insides (heart, mind, spirit$).”

Evidently, neither of them are entirely fazed by what the internet had to say about the pic.

While the Dallas star’s daughter is all grown-up, she did help another soul singer bring twins into the world. In fact, Badu confirmed that Summer Walker had twins and was there for her in the process. Afterwards, Walker thanked her and her other loved ones for their support.

Also, Curry actually helped Badu in that process, as well. In the Instagram post that the 51-year-old made announcing the twins, she shouted out her daughter, who was also there to help.

Today I am training a very capable doula who is shadowing me while we assist a mommy in labor with twins. @pumacurry I’m so proud of [you] and I really really like you. A doula must be like water.
