Diamond “Baby Blue” Smith 

Baby Blue has become quite notorious in the entertainment industry. The rapper, who also appeared on Love and Hip-Hop: Miami, was arrested in 2020 for his connection with a COVID-19 loan scheme. Baby Blue was then sentenced the following year to 20 months in prison after he pleaded guilty to conspiring to commit wire fraud. He was also implicated in a scheme that secured $24 million from the COVID relief program. After serving his time, the rapper was released in 2023 but still owed $1 million in restitution at the time of release.

Diamond “Spectacular” Smith 

Post-Pretty Ricky, Spectacular ventured into business and established himself as an entrepreneur and motivational speaker. In 2020, the rapper was arrested for allegedly assaulting a Disney employee. He was later released on a $500 bail. 

Marcus “Pleasure P” Cooper

After leaving Pretty Ricky in 2007, Pleasure P found success as a solo artist. He released his solo debut single “Did You Wrong” in 2008. The song made it onto the Billboard Hot 100 charts. They released two successful albums, Number 1 Girl and All Around The World. Still, they faced internal challenges, such as Prodigy leaving the group, who was the lead singer, and Roc Royal being fired following his legal troubles, which led to lineup changes and them eventually disbanded in 2017.

B2K

B2K, also known as Boys of the New Millennium, was a prominent American boy band from 1998 to 2004 and briefly reunited in 2018-2019. Comprising of Lil’ Fizz, J-Boog, Raz-B, and Omarion, the group gained massive success with hits like “Bump, Bump, Bump” and “Uh Huh.” 

B5

B5, formerly known as TNT Boyz and Audio, is an American R&B group consisting of the five brothers, Dustin Michael, Kelly Allen, Patrick Owen, Carnell Frederick, and Bryan Jesse. 

They captivated audiences with their harmonies and energetic performances. After a five-year hiatus, they made a comeback in 2018 with the single “Do That,” and also released another single in 2019, named ‘WAVE.’

Nonetheless, there were many impressive acts that earned significant attention during their run. Also, a few popular R&B groups like Destiny’s Child crossed over into the 00s and still dominated the scene. With the current resurgence of R&B groups, many fans have been looking to the genre’s roots. These are seven of the best R&B groups of the 00s.

Destiny’s Child

No list of R&B acts from the 90s and 00s can exist without mentioning Destiny’s Child. Their final and most popular lineup included Beyonce Knowles, Kelly Rowland, and Michelle Williams. However, past members, LeToya Luckett and LaTavia Robertson, remain beloved by fans and contributed to the group’s early success. The rapping duo, Diamond and Spectacular Smith, formed Pretty Ricky, with Corey Mathis as a third rapper, and Marcus Cooper providing the vocals. Their first two albums were certified Gold, while their best-known single, ”Grind With Me,” went platinum. Towards the end of the 00s, their lead vocalist, Pleasure P departed, marking the beginning of the end for the R&B and Hip Hop group. 

Floetry

English R&B duo Floetry made waves in the late 90s and early 00s with their poetic lyrics and soothing voices. Comprising Marsha Ambrosius and Natalie Stewart, Floetry began by adding spoken word poetry to musical pieces. They soon realized they could move people with their talents and formed a group. Overall, they won three BET awards in their career and received multiple nominations for others.

3 Lil’ Women, aka 3LW, were a trio of talented young girls. The R&B girl group rose to fame in the 00s, releasing three albums, including their eponymous debut. The three members of the group, Adrienne Bailon, Naturi Naughton, and Kiely Williams eventually achieved success even after the group’s disbandment. 3LW is best known for their hit singles, “No More (Baby I’ma Do Right),” and “Playas Gon’ Play.”

Last month, Baby Blue from the millennial R&B group was granted an early prison release for fraud charges, but now he’s announced that he’s been taken off of house arrest

Blue was originally sentenced to 20 months behind bars for a multi-million dollar PPP scam and turned himself into federal authorities in February 2022. After serving only a year of his time, he was released and placed on house arrest. Now, a month later, he’s been taken off that restriction.

News reports have confirmed that Baby Blue from the millennial R&B group Pretty Ricky was granted an early release today (February 7) after spending exactly one year behind bars for fraud charges in connection to an alleged Payment Protection Program (PPP) scam.

Blue, whose given name is Diamond Smith, was sentenced to 20 months for his role in a $24 million dollar Payment Protection Program, but Blue told The Shade Room that his reduced time was granted under the First Step Act, which was enacted by Donald Trump in 2018. The Pretty Ricky singer also said that he is officially changing his name to “Bigg Money Blue” and that he has new music and a book on the way.

A Paycheck Protection Program scam landed him in prison, but Baby Blue is now a free man. It was almost a year ago that the Pretty Ricky singer was sentenced to 20 months in prison, but it looks like he was awarded an early release. Blue was accused of being part of a fraud during the COVID pandemic that earned him upwards of almost $25 million. He denied culpability and warned others against doing deals with people without knowing the full extent of what is going on.

The Shade Room shared a video of Baby Blue as he was reuniting with Spectacular and Pleasure P. The Pretty Ricky trio celebrated outside of the prison, and Blue gave an exclusive statement to the TSR after being released thanks to the First Step Act. “I met a lot of REAL n*ggas in the feds,” he said.
