Drake’s “Honestly, Nevermind” Certified Platinum

Drake is one of the most commercially successful artists of his era. Now he’s adding another impressive accomplishment to his nearly unmatched resume. Last year, he surprised fans by taking a shift into house and dance music on his album Honesty, Nevermind. The album spawned hit songs like “Sticky,” “Massive,” and the 21 Savage collaboration “Jimmy Cooks.” Despite that, the album was met with mixed reception from fans and was largely disliked by critics.

Regardless of the reception of the album, it’s reached an impressive level of success. The album debuted at the top spot on the Billboard 200 and now just barely a year after its release Honestly, Nevermind has been certified platinum. Fans had a mixed reaction to the achievement with some standing up for the album. “maybe a hot take: only good songs in this tracklist – Intro, Sticky, Massive, Jimmy Cooks,” says one commenter. Others claimed that the album’s success is more of a reflection of Drake himself. “Bro can release anything and it goes platinum,” reads one of the top comments on the post.

Drake and 21 Savage are currently on a massive North American tour. The “It’s All A Blur” tour has seen the rappers performing career-spanning setlists full of fan-favorite tracks. Honestly, Nevermind songs like “Jimmy Cooks” and “Massive” make an appearance at nearly every single show. Recently, the tour just got another opening performer. It was announced over the weekend that Sexyy Red would be joining the “It’s All A Blur” tour for all of the remaining dates.

The tour has also been a hotbed for attracting other celebs. Fans took notice when Kim Kardashian, Kendall Jenner, Bad Bunny, and Tristan Thompson all enjoyed a recent LA concert together. Lil Durk Celebrates “All My Life” Going Platinum

Lil Durk burst onto the scene a few years ago, shaking rap up with his unique style and early collaborative efforts. Once he got a verse on a Drake song, 2020’s “Laugh Now, Cry Later,” it’s been off to the races with the young rapper. Now, he’s sitting pretty with a Certified Platinum record for “All My Life,” a song from his 2023 album Almost Healed. This is Lil Durk’s first Platinum song as the featured artist. A collaboration with the one and only J. Cole, “All My Life” just topped a million total units sold in the United States.

“I send my love out to all my fans for keeping me motivated and hungry and not lazy and comfortable,” Lil Durk says on his Instagram. Adorning the post is a pic of him and J. Cole with a crowd of people, an ice cream truck in the background. Almost Healed has a 21-song tracklist that serves up some of Durk’s best songs yet, such as “War Bout It (feat. 21 Savage,” “Cross the Globe (feat. Juice World,” and “Stand By Me (feat. Morgan Whalen).” The Morgan Whalen collab showcases a mash-up of country and rap, an effective method.

Fans have been overwhelmingly positive about Almost Healed, as well as the rapper’s recent embracing of his Muslim heritage. With a Platinum song under his belt, Lil Durk is looking to continue running the rap game with maximum impact. He isn’t afraid to make waves and be who he truly is. Jay-Z & Alicia Keys’ “Empire State Of Mind” Has Gone 9X Platinum

If you were to say you haven’t heard Jay-Z and Alicia Keys’ 2009 song “Empire State of Mind,” you would be lying. The unofficial anthem of New York City, one can hear it crossing terminals at JFK Airport. Any millennial worth their weight in rap has this on their top-10 list of the early aughts. And now, Jay-Z can sit back and revel in the song going Platinum a whopping nine times. Going Certified Platinum today, June 28, 2023, it took the track almost 14 years to move nine million units.

“Empire State of Mind” had momentum from the jump. Jay-Z dropped the single on September 1, 2009, ten days before the eight-year anniversary of 9/11. The track went Gold and Platinum in two months. By April 2010, it had gone triple-Platinum. The higher the honor goes, the tougher it is to reach that benchmark. So to see “Empire State” do it nine times is quite impressive. For Jay-Z, this is nothing surprising; most of his lyrics comment on him being the best rapper to do it, and this is just further proof.

Originally, “Empire State of Mind” had Angela Hunte and Janet Sewell-Ulepic on the hook. In fact, they were the writers of the first version of the song. They had to submit the track twice to Jay-Z’s Roc Nation before Jay decided to keep the chorus, switch up the verse, and record it himself. Roc Nation asked Hunte and Sewell-Ulepic if they thought anyone else was more appropriate for the chorus. They suggested Alicia Keys, and Jay considered Mary J. Blige as well. But once he heard the piano loop, he knew Keys was the right choice.

“Empire State of Mind” was number one on the Billboard Hot 100 for five straight weeks, making it the first Jay-Z track to top the charts with him as a lead artist. Keeping with the “State of Mind” theme, a la Billy Joel and Nas, the song’s title is a reference to the Empire State Building. The “Excelsior” state and the city that never sleeps are grateful for such a powerful and indicative anthem, showcasing the culture behind one of America’s greatest cities.

J.I.D, 21 Savage, And Baby Tate’s “Surround Sound” Goes Platinum

J.I.D’s 2022 The Forever Story track “Surround Sound,” featuring 21 Savage and Baby Tate, is certified platinum. The single was released in January of last year, and uses a sample of Aretha Franklin’s “One Step Ahead.” The song’s official music video also currently has over 30 million views on YouTube.

In March, J.I.D discussed the critically-acclaimed album that the track is a part of. He told People that the album saw him digging up past wounds, making it tough for him to consistently perform it live. “This project, it’s helping open up the door for the rest of the stuff I’m going to be doing,” he told the outlet. “So I like how intentional it was. And it was so serious, to the point like I have to have fun on the next one.”

The Success Of “Surround Sound”

“I was a little stressed,” J.I.D continued, I was going through emotional s**t, I was digging up old traumas. I was dialing backwards. It’s hard to perform it every night, you know what I’m saying? I’m ready for the next album cycle. The [setlist] stretch from ‘Sistanem’ to ‘Kody Blu 31,’ I’m cooked. And then ‘Workin Out,’ I’m cooked. Yeah, I’m an emotional wreck at that point.”

Earlier this year, J.I.D also shared his thoughts on the current state of hip hop. “I got a weird theory about how music is right now. In the blog era with those superstars like Drake. They came up in the blog era, and they came up in a time [when] you ain’t see anybody rapping like that,” he told the Throwing Fits podcast in March, “They weren’t like, it wasn’t too much—it was a first-time thing. Now, it’s so much of fast food and microwave. Everything is really quick. So, it’s not really like, rap.” He went on to explain that he feels as though many rappers these days care more about virality than the quality of the work they put out. “People don’t really care about it as much,” J.I.D claimed.

Coi Leray Rocks Patent Leather Pants To Accept Platinum Plaque

Boston singer and rapper Coi Leray was recently awarded a plaque for her 2022 hit, “Players” going platinum in Canada. Leray accepted the plaque over the weekend during a show at REBEL in Toronto. She posted on Instagram later, sharing with followers how she was surprised with it. Leray wrote, “Amazing energy last night. They surprised me with a plaque during the performance.” She continued, writing, “‘PLAYERS’ is PLATINUM IN CANADA,” alongside a trophy emoji. Fans were eager to show her love in the comments section. One user wrote, “I love this for her.. I’ve always like her style and her confidence in herself since the beginning when everybody doubted her.. she’s been doing her shit.” Another told her, “Your post has made me feel like anything is possible. Thank you for the inspiration.”

At the show, Leray wore patent leather pants featuring blue details, and a coordinating bright blue leather bralette. She also showed off matching leather fingerless gloves, black boots, and some serious jewelry. The performer’s Instagram post additionally showcases her taking celebratory shots straight from the bottle, and holding up the new plaque in front of her massive audience.

Alongside Leray, her crew also celebrated the artist’s success in coordinating leather fits. One member wore a patent vest, while another hyped her up in a patent leather jacket. One man featured in the post also matches Leray, wearing a sweater with a bright blue stripe and silver eyelets.

Last week, Leray updated fans on the status of her next album, revealing that it will be released on June 23. She also shared the album’s scandalous cover art, featuring the artist going topless with some bright blue accents. “COI” will be her second LP, following her debut album, Trendsetter. Shortly after the announcement, she also teased an upcoming music video to accompany her single “BOPS” on Twitter. Wizkid Hits New Milestone With The Help Of Drake

Wizkid is an artist who has seen success on a Global stage. The Nigerian artist has some massive hits, and he is constantly traveling the globe and performing. Overall, it is clear that the artist will be a superstar for years to come. Moreover, his crossover appeal is special as he is constantly being featured on some huge hip-hop hits. For instance, he was on the massive hit “One Dance” by Drake. This song certainly helped blossom Wizkid into the superstar he is now. Although, that is not to say he hasn’t been able to hold his own over the years.

Every single year, it feels as though Wizkid impresses fans by racking up some truly incredible milestones. For instance, just a few days ago, he had two platinum singles. These included “One Dance,” as well as “Essence” with Tems. Now, however, the artist has picked up a third RIAA-certified platinum single with “Come Closer.” Funny enough, this song also features Drake.

As HipHopDX reports, Wizkid is officially the first African artist to secure three platinum songs. Overall, this is a massive accomplishment. Furthermore, it does a lot for genres like Afrobeat on a global scale. Wizkid has been steadily accumulating an amazing discography, and these accomplishments only further cement his legacy. It just makes it all that much more unique that two of these songs also include another global superstar in Drake.

Tyler, The Creator’s “CALL ME IF YOU GET LOST” Goes Platinum

Tyler, The Creator’s 2021 album, CALL ME IF YOU GET LOST, has been certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America. Additionally, it has achieved the unique feat of reaching No. 1 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart in three different years (2021, 2022, and 2023). For its latest chart-topping ascent, the popularity was fueled by the release of a deluxe edition of the album, titled The Estate Sale.

Tyler released the original version of CALL ME IF YOU GET LOST back in June 2021. The album featured collaborations with DJ Drama, 42 Dugg, YoungBoy Never Broke Again, Lil Wayne, Lil Uzi Vert, Pharrell Williams, and many more across its 16-song tracklist. The project debuted atop the Billboard 200 while moving 169,000 album-equivalent units.

As for The Estate Sale, Tyler shared the updated version last month. The new tracks feature appearances from Vince Staples, Madlib, A$AP Rocky, and YG. Further bringing more streams to Tyler’s music, he recently performed at Coachella during Kali Uchis‘ set. The two ran through their collaboration, “See You Again,” off of Tyler’s Flower Boy album.

Last month, Tyler also appeared on the Hulu series RapCaviar Presents, during which he discussed his love for being a rapper. “I’m a rapper. I love that shit. It’s a beautiful thing,” he stated at the time. “We’re good with words. We’re good with rhythm. We know pockets. We hear a collection of sounds and one thing and say, ‘Ahh, I know what could go over this.’ That takes a skill. Hey, we know narrative. Ah, I know what you’re feeling. I know how to put those in words where you can understand yourself better. You got some young kid, like 13, thinking, ‘Oh, I gotta make bravado rap…’ No, you don’t. You could flex about the shit that you truly hold here and make it seem like the most important st. When I’m flexing on these songs, [it’s] just about the shit that I really like.”

Lil Baby Gets Official Platinum Plaque For “It’s Only Me”

One of the hottest rappers out of Atlanta continues to see success for his work, even months after its initial drop. Moreover, Lil Baby just got a new platinum plaque from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for his 2022 album, It’s Only Me. The project reportedly reached over 1 million album equivalent units sold in February of this year following its October release. While many might see this as Baby being late to the party or failing to meet these standards sooner, it also goes to show how long-lasting and relevant his work continues to be well after its release.

Not only that, but there might even be a new album from the 28-year-old soon with a very exciting name attached. Recently, producer Black Coffee hinted at Drake releasing a collab album with the “California Breeze” MC soon, although neither artist’s confirmed or denied this as of writing this article. Black Coffee worked heavily on Drizzy’s Honestly, Nevermind, so he’s quite the close source to get this info from. However, only time will tell if it actually manifests into a drop, yet the Toronto superstar’s joint project with 21 Savage certainly inspires hope with its precedent.

Unfortunately, while It’s Only Me sold very well, it represented a bit of a critical downturn for Lil Baby. Many fans weren’t pleased with the 23-song tracklist and cited a general lack of inspiration or notable songs. Of course, all music is subjective, so many stood by the Quality Control signee and kept bumping his new tracks. Regardless of whether every song is a hit, you can still count on him to deliver rhymes and topics with a bit more detail and grace than the average rapper. As such, maybe a mixed reception will motivate him even more to drop something special as its follow-up.

Meanwhile, it’s hard to imagine that the rapper worries too much about what others think of his musical output. As one of the most successful rappers of his generation from sales to guest verses and beyond, he still holds a strong grip on much of the hip-hop fanbase. Also, he got a lot of respect from his peers, including Lil Uzi Vert who said they’ve “never heard a bad song” from him. With that in mind, he definitely has the backing to keep pushing himself to greatness, and platinum plaques are just the cherry on top.
