Nicki Minaj’s Rolling Loud Headlining Set Brought Plenty Of Frosting But Forgot The Cake

Last year, Nicki Minaj made a pretty triumphant return with Pink Friday 2, her first new album in 5 years. The record came on the back of numerous hit singles, most notably the smash hit “Super Freaky Girl.” It also spawned some new beloved hits of its own like “FTCU” and “Everybody.” Unsurprisingly, she followed it up with a tour announcement on the back of the record. But far from just a celebration of Pink Friday 2, the resulting tour has turned out to be a career-long victory lap for one of rap’s premiere hitmakers.

In a similar fashion to mega-tours in 2023 like the Eras and Renaissance tours, Nicki delivered visuals, set pieces, outfits, and set lists that span her entire 15 years of hitmaking. The potential for her to unpack nearly any song she’s ever recorded clicks perfectly with her rabidly devoted fanbase of Barbz. The pink-clad stan army fundamentally change anywhere they arrive in bulk and Rolling Loud was no different. One main stage act after another during the festival’s Friday schedule couldn’t help but notice the seas of pink overtaking the grounds. All of the built and built into a fevered anticipation for Nicki herself to take the stage. While she delivered all of the bells and whistles fans could hope for, it was delivered in an impersonal and over-rehearsed package that felt far more concerned with seeming grand and elaborate than actually putting on a dynamic performance.

Rolling Loud Los Angeles was officially the 6th stop on the Pink Friday 2 tour. The set got underway 40 minutes late, though that was the case throughout the weekend-long festival and didn’t necessarily have much to do with Nicki. But she did give fans lucky enough to have cellphone service a QR code to explore her Gag City website while they waited. When it was finally time for her to take the stage, she was preceded by a flashy introduction video. The clip features an animated Nicki in the image of her Chun-Li character gearing up to take the stage.

Videos like that one were played repeatedly throughout the performance. Alongside the numerous shifting stage elements, that meant there was quite a substantial portion of the show where Nicki was entirely absent. In fact, multiple entire songs from the set were played while she was nowhere to be found on stage. The combination of constantly shifting set design and repeated outfit changes gave the impression that they were condensing an entire concert into the compacted festival timeline. While the elaborate presentation was larger than life, it came at the expense of some of the intimacy that makes live music so great in the first place.

Nicki Bounces Between Eras

Credit: Frankie Perez @sketchyfrankie

The jittery pace of the show had a lot to do with the ever-changing design of the set. Nicki brought with her numerous props that helped accentuate her various characters. As she jumped between different eras backup dancers wheeled her on stage in boxes labeled “Chun-Li,” “Barbie,” and “Roman.” Those almost always came with outfit changes. While the looks are often the biggest part of a tour of this caliber, the shortened time span meant that a substantial chunk of her time was spent off-stage changing clothes.

If the recapping sounds repetitive, that’s how it felt. Watching Nicki elaborately redesign the entire stage amid a lengthy outfit change was exciting at first. But as she continued to only unpack shortened versions of one or two songs before redesigning everything again, it lost its shine. It was only after she blew through one era after another that the show finally shed its theatrics and opened up the opportunity for Nicki to be the forceful entertainer she’s always been capable of.

Nicki Minaj Finally Hits Her Stride

Credit: Frankie Perez @sketchyfrankie

Across the final run of songs the show finally slowed down, took a breath, and lived up to everything it was capable of. Shockingly, it took this long into the show for Nicki to address the crowd at all. In fact, it was the first time she actually said anything between songs when she asked the crowd to applaud for themselves. In the lead-up to her sentimental classic “Moment 4 Life,” she gave a speech to the audience about living in the moment and seeking out happiness every day.

For her second to last song, she gave the Barbz in attendance an incredible treat. During a New Year’s performance a few months ago Nicki passed on performing her smash hit “Starships.” She later claimed that she doesn’t perform the song anymore, something that disappointed fans craving to hear it live. That made her surprise performance of the song one of the most special moments of the entire Rolling Loud weekend. Punctuating it by crushing her go-to closer for every tour stop so far “Everybody” ended the set on a massive bright spot despite its frantic start.

Nicki Minaj is a once-in-a-generation performer who has withstood one controversy after another for decades. In moments during her Rolling Loud Headlining Set, she showed exactly why. With bright, fiery, intense performances and a back catalog that can go toe to toe with anybody, Nicki is still an iconoclast. But under the pressure to deliver the grandest moment possible, she turned in a performance that paid more attention to elaborate theatrics than the powerful voice at the center of it all.

Nicki Minaj Possibly Seen Arguing With Hairstylist Backstage During “Pink Friday 2 Tour”

Nicki Minaj is celebrating her revival of her iconic Pink Friday series with its sequel and its accompanying set of concerts. The Trinidadian femcee icon is currently on her Pink Friday 2 World Tour, which began at the start of March. Its album dropped back in December of last year to mixed reviews. But you know her Barbz are going to fully support all of her work. However, the tour appears to be having its issues, as Nicki Minaj and a hairstylist got into it a little.

According to TMZ Hip Hop, they obtained photo evidence of the seemingly heated interaction backstage. It is a pretty blurry photo from her Seattle show last night, March 10, so it is hard to confirm how serious it got. However, Nicki’s stance and body language toward the hairstylist do reveal that there was some frustration from the rapper. Those were possibly stemming from some other production issues.

Fans were mixed in their reactions, saying the superstar overreacted, while others were on her side. More could come of this, so be sure to stick with us for any updates.

Nicki Minaj Snatches Mic From Fan On “Pink Friday 2” Tour

Earlier this month, Nicki Minaj finally kicked off her eagerly anticipated Pink Friday 2 world tour. As expected, it’s been a hit among fans, who have successfully sold out various shows. So far, Nicki’s come through with special guests like Tyga, unveiled countless fun clips and photos from the shows, and more. She’s even allowed a few lucky attendees to share the spotlight, offering up her mic to the crowd.

One of these specially selected Barbz recently had her once-in-a-lifetime opportunity cut short, however, and later received backlash for messing up the song. The Barb in question, a TikToker named Patrice @nsvtravelagent, came forward this week to share her side of the story. She shared a clip of the moment, which shows her singing “The Night Is Still Young” for a few moments before Nicki snatched her microphone back because she forgot the lyrics.

Fan Denies Forgetting “The Night Is Still Young” Lyrics

@nsvtravelagent

Sooo yea that happened! I am not in the wrong😭 Y’all could never make me feel embarrassed tho🥴 Nicki… now you know that song got 3 bars of “the night is still young”. You aint even have to do me like that sis.🙄🤣 That was the crowd messing MY MOMENT up! Love you my girl💗 🦄 In the meantime, let me plan a luxury vacation for you☺ I know celebs dont need travel agents to find deals cause y’all pay whatever BUT I promise I’m phenomenal at my job and you’ll have the best time💗💗💗 @Nicki Minaj #gagcity #pinkfriday2 #lasvegas

♬ original sound – Patrice – Travel Agent

According to Patrice, however, she didn’t forget the lyrics at all. In her TikTok, she explains that she’s not embarrassed or ashamed of the moment, because it was the rest of the crowd that threw her off. Fortunately, the fan didn’t let the unfortunate moment put a damper on her experience. “I had me a great time,” she says. “I was right there, front and center, okay? Nicki was disappointed, but listen, I’m sorry Nicki but I was just singing the song.”

This isn’t the first time a performer confiscated a microphone after a fan forgot their lyrics, however. In November, something similar happened at a Tamar Braxton concert, though the fan insists they were simply trying to record the moment. What do you think of Nicki Minaj confiscating her mic from one of the Barbz at her concert? What about the Barb sharing their side of the story? Share your thoughts in the comments section down below, and keep an eye on HNHH for more updates.

Her appearance at the show comes after opening up about her relationship with Megan during an interview on The Danza Project, last Sunday. “It took a lot for me to come and do this,” she said. “Part of that is, I wanted to be sure when I did speak that I wasn’t speaking from a place of anger. I’m able to articulate myself well enough and not allow the drama to overshadow how I truly feel. I think that’s very important. I didn’t want to take an interview or sit down with anybody until I was past that part.” Nicole added that she’s since decided to “open up more,” and “let people into my life a little bit and maybe this will help them understand me more. Maybe my story will help somebody else. And I think it’s also part of the healing process. Maybe this will help.” Check out her video from Nicki Minaj’s concert below.

As for last month’s Instagram Live, Minaj said: “I know that this is the busiest man in show business. I know that he’s rich, and I know that he’s the funniest man in showbiz. Can y’all hit up Katt Williams and ask him what would be his price…to be a part of the Pink Friday 2 Gag City Tour?” She had been referencing his recent bombshell interview with Shannon Sharpe on Club Shay Shay where he spoke candidly on a variety of people in the entertainment industry. On March 1, Nicki Minaj kicked off her Pink Friday 2 World Tour. Although the intense performance run features special guest Monica, the opening slot remains unfilled. Back in February, the “Beep Beep” rapper began to gauge her fan base to see who they felt would be a good fit.

Through a live stream, Minaj finally landed on “the busiest man in show business,” Katt Williams. During the broadcast, she urged her fans to relay her invitation. “Can y’all hit up Katt Williams,” she said. “Ask him what would be his price to be a part of the ‘Pink Friday 2 Gag City Tour?””

Well, Williams has finally responded to Minaj. On March 3, as part of his Dark Matter Tour stop in Charlotte, North Carolina, he made a hilarious joke about the potential business venture. “Nicki Minaj said she wanted me on her tour, and she told so many people a million people hit my phone at the same time,” he said. It scared me and Jesus. He shut all of AT&T down!”

Although Williams’ reply wasn’t exactly a proper yes or no, it was enough to hype ticketholders up online. There are still several dozen dates left on the Pink Friday 2 World Tour, but perhaps Williams would be down to join after he wraps up his contractual duties.

Nicki Minaj’s Pink Friday 2 Tour is officially underway after months of buildup and some speculation that it might not even happen. Although she didn’t manage to secure Katt Williams as a tour opener, she did treat fans to a set highlighting both her new album and catalog classics like “Anaconda,” “Moment 4 Life,” “Monster,” “Starships” and “Super Bass.”

With such a loaded setlist, you may be wondering how much time to allot to take in the whole show. According to setlist.fm, the concert lasts from about two hours and 20 minutes, as the opening show in Oakland ran from 9:45 pm – 12:00 am, while the Denver stop went from Show: 9:30 pm – 11:50 pm.
