Quavo Tattooed Takeoff As A Kid, Rapper Unveils Old “Only Built For Infinity Links” Footage

During a recent interview, Quavo shared a surprising new detail of his relationship with his late nephew and collaborator, Takeoff. The 32-year-old revealed that as a teenager, he fell into the role of personal tattoo artist for his friend group. He claims that after coming across a “kind of stolen” tattoo gun, his crew brought it to him because they knew he can draw. Quavo says that despite not knowing anything about tattooing, he went for it as a means to make a little bit of cash.

The performer went on to share that he even gave Takeoff his first tattoo. The piece was also the only ink he’d ever gotten before his 2022 passing. It was also the first tattoo Quavo’s ever given anybody. He describes the experience as “bad as hell,” noting how it signifies the trust they had between them.

Quavo Gave Takeoff His First Tattoo

Today is also the one-year-anniversary of the release of Quavo and Takeoff’s joint album, Only Built for Infinity Links. To celebrate, Quavo unveiled some never-before-seen footage of their creative process. In a new clip, the two of them are seen literally at the drawing board, putting together the album’s tracklist. The immense amount of scribbling, arrows, underlines, and more just goes to show how much effort went into the project. Only Built for Infinity Links came out on October 7 of 2022. Just a month later, Takeoff was shot in Houston, which led to his untimely death on November 1.

Quavo Celebrates Takeoff Amid “Only Built For Infinity Links” Milestone

Quavo took to social media today, honoring his fallen former Migos group mate Takeoff amid a new milestone. He revealed that their 2022 joint album as Unc & Phew, Only Built for Infinity Links, has now been certified gold by the RIAA. The artist also went on to share some photos of the two of them, captioning the post “Masterpiece Twin.” As expected, his comments section was quickly flooded with fans insisting that the LP should have gone platinum by now.

Only Built for Infinity Links dropped less than a month before Takeoff was tragically shot and killed in November of 2022. It debuted at No. 7 on the Billboard 200, selling somewhere around 99,000 album-equivalent units in its first week. The album features various high-profile collaborations, including appearances from Young Thug, Gunna, NBA YoungBoy, Summer Walker, Gucci Mane, and more.

In an interview with Billboard just after the album’s release, Takeoff revealed that Only Built for Infinity Links was the project he felt the most proud of. “We had to work hard,” he explained. “We went back in that bat cave. Dirty, grimy, no cut and scruffy — just ain’t even worried about nothing. Just in that basement cooking up, going in, editing and coming back like, ‘We got it right here.’ Then come back a day later like, ‘Yo, nah, we need to bounce this off of this.’ Those changes made the album. You think you got it and then you keep painting that picture until you come up with that Picasso.”

Elsewhere in Quavo’s caption, he also wrote “Watch What We Do Next RP [rocket emoji],” hinting at his upcoming album. The new LP, Rocket Power, is scheduled for release on August 18. Quavo previously revealed that the album is a tribute to his late nephew and collaborator, and includes some posthumous features from Takeoff. “This album is for the rocket, our true fans, and also this is my therapy,” he told Instagram followers. “This album is a true reflection of how I feel right now.”

Raekwon Gave Quavo & Takeoff His Blessing For “Only Built For Infinity Links”

Years and years after Wu Tang Clan changed the game, its top-tier MCs like Raekwon the Chef are still getting their flowers from hip-hop’s current elite. Or links, in this case. Atlanta icons Quavo and Takeoff referenced The Chef in the title for their upcoming album Only Built For Infinity Links, set to drop on October 7th, and Quavo recently told TMZ that they were blessed by the New York native himself.

The Migos members now known as Unc and Phew announced their album’s release back in September, a few months after dropping the single “Hotel Lobby” in May. The title is a reference to Raekwon’s classic 1995 album Only Built 4 Cuban Linx…, which is considered by many to be one of the best hip-hop albums of the ’90s and the pinnacle of the era’s mafioso rap. With all of Migos’ bars about whipping in the kitchen and putting masks down, it’s not hard to see the lineage that Unc and Phew are honoring.

“We most definitely hollered at Raekwon,” Quavo told TMZ at Los Angeles International Airport. “It was all love. We gave him respect. We told him it would be an honor, and we’re dropping this album called Only Built For Infinity Links, and it’s inspired by y’all. So we just wanted to let you know we respect the OG’s and we most definitely love Wu-Tang, got respect for Wu-Tang, but right now this is what it’s about.”

He also proclaimed the project to be “the greatest album of all time.” The duo dropped the tracklist for the presumed masterpiece in early September, and it boasts 21 tracks and features from Young Thug, Gunna, NBA YoungBoy, Summer Walker, and more. Despite stirring some pots when he posted a picture kicking it and smoking with Quavo back in August, the Wu Tang clansman is unfortunately not on the album.

As for the missing third of Migos, Offset is unsurprisingly not on Infinity Links, but will be dropping a solo project of his own on November 11th. We’re still not super sure if the rap trio had a falling out or not, but some comments that Quavo made to GQ don’t indicate any bad blood.

“It was all about Migos, Migos, Migos. The three of us,” he said about the group’s early career. “I feel like every group member has to establish themselves. Their own body of work. If not, you start losing members.”

All the Migos have done so, with solo projects being celebrated parts of their respective trajectories. It’s similar to how Raekwon carved his name into the hip-hop books beyond his contributions to the Wu and continues to work on new material. Cuban Linx went platinum in February, its 2009 sequel was also well-received, and teases of a third installment are practically integral to Raekwon’s social media presence at this point.

“Right now, I’m going to give you another project before we actually give you the III,” he told HipHopDX back in November. “Because the III, we’re still curating that to make it strong. But being that time is really moving, I already have something else on deck that’s going to open up the vessel for Cuban Linx III to come out down the line. So, just get ready though.”

History’s repeating in the hip-hop game. WIth this cosign, Quavo and Takeoff are poised to deliver one of the most notable hip-hop releases for the rest of the year.

Quavo & Takeoff Drop Their Latest Single “Nothing Changed”

We’re less than a week away from the release of Quavo and Takeoff’s upcoming album, Only Built For Infinity Links. The new project will be their first as a duo, sans Offset. However, Quavo and Takeoff haven’t sounded as revitalized in the past five years as they have on the slew of singles they released since May’s “Hotel Lobby (Unc & Phew).”

Today, the duo slid through with their fourth and presumably final single before the album drops in its entirety. “Never Changed” boasts production from Murda Beatz, Keanu Beats, and Fabio Aguilar, who create a spacey soundscape for Quavo and Takeoff. The two artists come through with honeyed melodies, paired with ostentatious bars that reflect their wealth and loyalty.

Only Built For Infinity Links will boast features from Birdman, Gucci Mane, Summer Walker, Young Thug, Gunna, and more.

Check out their new song below and sound off with your thoughts in the comments.

Quavo And Takeoff Announce Their Wu-Tang Clan-Inspired Unc And Phew Album Title

Ever since Quavo and Takeoff dropped their first Offset-less single, “Hotel Lobby,” under the mouthful of a moniker Unc And Phew, fans have wondered whether they are still Migos, whether Offset will rejoin at some point, and even whether or not Unc And Phew is actually the group’s name (no one seems to actually be using it).

And now, we know the title of their upcoming duo album thanks to a trailer shared on Quavo’s social media pages (but not the Migos pages or Takeoff’s pages, further complicating the issue). It’s ironic that the new album they just announced evokes the name of a Wu-Tang Clan member’s classic solo debut because the rollout has been one big Wu-Tang caliber question mark. Only Built For Infinity Links is due on October 7, giving them a full 30 days to sort this rollout and get fans invested.

They’re already well on the way with “Hotel Lobby” and its follow-up, “Big Stunna” featuring Birdman, but fans can’t help questioning whether this really means the end of Migos, especially since Offset has been teasing his own solo project. While each member of the group did release a solo project a few years ago and Quavo has even done group projects with other artists, the trio did make clear that they would reunite after all three individual albums were out. This time, it’s anybody’s guess, and that could work in their favor if fans decide to check out the two albums they’ve got coming out of curiosity, but it could also backfire, since fans love them so much as a trio.

Either way, we’ll find on 10/7 when Only Built For Infinity Links drops on Quality Control Music.
