Blxst Speaks To College Class Dedicated To Nipsey Hussle

Blxst is one of R&B’s most exciting rising stars in the past few years. In 2022, his debut studio album Before You Go saw him ascend to new heights. With features from Arin Ray, Rick Ross and Zacari, the LA native displayed his incredibly soothing voice as well as he ever has. The rest of the year, he found himself being featured on songs for other huge R&B and rap stars. Icons like Kehlani, Burna Boy, Babyface Ray, and even Kendrick Lamar recruited Blxst for tracks in 2022.

He outdid himself so much on these guest appearances, that it landed him at 2023’s Grammy awards in early February. Nominated twice for his contributions to Kendrick Lamar’s recent album, Blxst shined on the red carpet. Their track “Die Hard,” also including Amanda Reifer, was one of the best on the whole LP. Mutually beneficial relationships like these that Blxst has created have only helped him in the industry. So much so, that he is becoming a household name in West Coast music and is now being booked for speaking gigs.

Blxst Shares Wisdom

On Feb. 8, Blxst was welcomed onto the Loyola Marymount University campus. He showed up to be a guest speaker for “The Marathon Continues: Building Brand Through Culture” course. This marketing course was founded by late LA legend Nipsey Hussle. According to the LMU website, it is taught at the College of Business Administration and is taught by Hussle’s former business partner David Gross. Joined by his manager Victor Burnett and entertainment lawyer Karl Fowlkes for the panel, Blxst gave advice about the music industry and building your own brand. Additionally, he touched on starting his label EVGLE with Burnett and Fowlkes and making sure you have agency over what you create.

“I will say, at some point, you have to take accountability,” he said. “We have information out there — we got so many examples of our legends that don’t even own a percentage of their whole culture that we built. How many times are we going to watch the same story continue? For me, I’m leading by example. You got to be the change you want to see. I feel like the label situation is all predicated on how you want your future to be. I want to be self-sustainable … and that’s what I want for my people as well. Ownership is everything.”

Students were also able to ask Blxst and his associates questions. Best was the second of three guest speakers for the panel at LMU. The first guests were Rashad Bilal and Troy Millings, and the last guests will be NBA players Matt Barnes and Steven Jackson. Nipsey Hussle was always a proponent of sharing wisdom with younger generations. So, it’s nice to see Blxst and others do so at a school in Hussle’s hometown.

Lauren London Shares How She Found “Courage” To Act Again After Nipsey’s Death

You People has been the talk of pop culture as the Kenya Barris film eased its way to Netflix, and the film’s star, Lauren London, has been hopping from one outlet to the next to help promote it. The actress took some deserved time away from the spotlight following the death of Nipsey Hussle. She reflected on her return to the big screen while on The Drew Barrymore Show.

“I’m very apprehensive with just working right now, just grieving still and just, you know, building a new life,” said London. “So, I’m very intentional on who I work with, and Kenya just created a really safe space. And so did Jonah [Hill].”

In March 2019, Nipsey was outside his Marathon Clothing store in Los Angeles when he was shot and killed by Eric Holder. The two men were associates, and it’s reported that Nipsey said something that Holder took as an offense.

Last year, Holder was found guilty of Hussle’s murder and is currently awaiting sentencing. Since his death, London has focused on maintaining his legacy and took a step back from pursuing her career.

The actress also revealed that her eldest son, Kameron Carter, whom she shares with Lil Wayne, encouraged her to get back to work.

Barrymore wanted to know how London found the courage to return to acting.

“Every day is different. So, some days you don’t want to. You just want to lay there,” she answered. “My big reason is my children because they do deserve a really happy mom, and they deserve joy, and they deserve a house that has music playing and incense going and light coming in the windows. They deserve that.”

“You know, when you lose someone, they’re on the other side wanting you to continue life, as well,” London further stated. “So, I just always think about what I know Nip would want me to do and what I know my children deserve. And what I deserve, too!”

Nipsey Hussle Joke In ‘Family Guy’ Episode Stirs Debate

Nipsey Hussle Joke In ‘Family Guy’ Episode Stirs Debate

Nipsey Hussle is Hip-Hop royalty, which means protecting him at all costs. The West Coast rapper was fatally shot on March 31st, 2019, outside his The Marathon Clothing store in South Central, Los Angeles.

Today, a joke about Nipsey Hussle in an episode of Family Guy has resurfaced online and all over social media, stirring up controversy amongst fans. Directed by Jerry Langford, the episode is titled “Young Parent Trap,” which aired in April of 2021 during the show’s 19th season.

During the scene, Chris (who’s voiced by Seth Green) is heard telling his parents, Peter and Lois, that he plans on attending a local music festival called Quachella. When Peter (voiced by Seth MacFarlane) asks for more information, Chris states, “They’re gonna have holograms of Tupac and also Nipsey Hussle, who I’d never heard of and then was told to care immensely about.”

The video on Twitter has since gone viral, clocking in at 2.2 million views since it was posted early in the morning. Many fans came to defend Nipsey Hussle for the show’s dark humor towards his death, while some argued that this is precisely in line with the sense of humor that Family Guy is known for.

The reference stems from Tupac’s hologram appearance during Dr. Dre’s headlining set at Coachella back in 2012, as a virtual Tupac was seen performing with the legendary Snoop Dogg.
Nipsey Hussle was considered a legend in the underground scene. Some would even say he reached the mainstream light, especially with the release of his debut album, Victory Lap. Regardless, any joke regarding someone’s death should not be taken lightly; unfortunately, this wasn’t caught earlier.

“Family Guy” Joke About Nipsey Hussle Resurfaces: Twitter Reacts

Before the era of cancel culture emerged, Family Guy stood as one of the few shows that pushed the boundaries as far as possible. Evidently, the showrunners aren’t afraid to touch on any subject matter. Unfortunately, the late Nipsey Hussle became a target in a 2021 episode, which resurfaced earlier today.

Just a few years following Nip’s death, Family Guy threw shade at the rapper in a 2021 episode. “Young Parent Trap” from season 19 aired in April 2021. During the episode, Chris discusses plans to attend a festival with his parents. He then provides Lois and Peter with more information regarding the concert, including hologram performances from two late West Coast legends.

“They’re gonna have holograms of 2Pac and also Nipsey Hussle, who I’d never heard of and then was told to care immensely about,” Chris says.

The comments led to a flurry of responses. Some people felt as though Family Guy tried to slander Nipsey Hussle. However, many looked at it as a jab toward those who only began showing love to Nip after his passing. Those who defended the joke suggested that Family Guy’s had worse jokes in the past compared to the slight towards Nipsey Hussle.

One person agreed with the TV show’s assessment of Nipsey Hussle.

“I didn’t know who the hell Nipsey Hussle was till he got shot and was all over my damn timeline,” one fan wrote. “So I definitely get the joke and I don’t see how it’s out of pocket. Have y’all seen Family Guy??”

Overall, it seems like people feel as thought the backlash isn’t warranted. Still, a lot of fans weren’t happy over the disrespect towards Nipsey’s legacy.
