Today in Hip Hop History: Bone Thugs-N-Harmony Dropped Their Third LP ‘Art Of War’ 28 Years Ago

On this day in Hip Hop history, we celebrate a quarter-century of one of Bone Thugs-n-Harmony’s most popular pieces of work, The Art of War. As a follow-up to the group’s most successful album E. 1999 Eternal, The Art of War did everything but disappoint.  The album kept the group’s momentum up, claiming the top spot on both the Billboard 200 and Top R&B/Hip-Hop charts. This album even capitalized on the double LP trend of the 90s in a way that was cohesive and unsaturated.

Originally rumored to be titled DNA Level C or “Cleveland” spelled backward, this album took its current title and became a declaration of war against rappers whom Bone Thugs believed to be imitators of the style they created. Some of the groups and artists targeted were Three 6 Mafia, Twista, Crucial Conflict, and Tommy Wright III. Through this project, Bone Thugs looked to cement themselves as the only soulful east coast gangsta rappers in the industry.

Commercially this album was a great success, selling 349,000 copies in its first week on shelves and going on to be certified quadruple platinum only one year after its release. The album’s two singles were also big hits with “If I Could Teach the World” reaching #27 on the Billboard Hot 100 and “Look Into My Eyes” peak at #4 on the same chart.

Smif-N-Wessun Announce “Still Shinin’ Tour” To Commemorate Their 30 Years In Hip Hop

Screenshot 2024 07 29 at 8.11.29 AM

Just ahead of the 30th anniversary of their critically acclaimed debut album, Dah Shinin’Smif-N-Wessun announce the launch of “Still Shinin’,” a tour that takes them from Brooklyn to Borlänge, Sweden.

The duo, composed of Tek and General Steele, first appeared on Black Moon’s album, Enta Da Stage, and they’ve been consciously commanding the stage ever since. Within a year, they were on a remix of May J. Blige’s “I Love You” from her chart-topping sophomore release, My Life, then released their own album reaching the Top 5 of Billboard’s R&B/Hip Hop chart!

Featuring production from Da Beatminerz, cover art inspired by Roy Ayers, and the debut of the Boot Camp Clik super group, Dah Shinin’ would eventually be named one of The Source magazine’s 100 Best Rap albums and yielded such classics as “Bucktown,” “Let’s Git It On,” “Wontime,” “Wrekonize,” “Sound Bwoy Bureill,” and “Stand Strong.”

It wasn’t all smooth –– jazz funk and riddims –– for the Bucktown pair, however. After a cease and desist from gun company, Smith & Wesson, Tek and Steele temporarily released under the moniker Cocoa Brovaz with 1998’s The Rude Awakening, but the culture never let Smif-N-Wessun fade. In 2005, they released Smif-N-Wessun: Reloaded and Smif-N-Wessun: The Album

In the following years, they delivered concentrated works with two more of hip hop’s most respected producers, Pete Rock for Monumental (2011), and 9th Wonder and his Soul Council for The All (2019), spawning collabs ranging from Styles P, to Bun BMusiq Soulchild and Rick Ross

In 2013, they pushed boundaries and the West Indian undertones laced throughout their music won diaspora-spanning respect and their first EP, Born And Raised, featuring reggae favorites, Jahdan Blakkamore, Junior Kelly and Junior Reid. It was entirely produced by Beatnick & K-Salaam. In 2018, a European tour showcased their stockpile of anthems and energetic flow with Champion Sound (Live From Prague).

Perhaps most known for their Timberlands and hook, “I shine, you shine, shine,” Smif-N-Wessun’s overall M.O. has acquired them a catalog and audience as loyal to them as they are to hip hop.

“When we on tour, we see generations that come to our shows,” says Tek. “At some shows, we have kids that are 9, 11, 13 years old with their dads, and their dads had their dad, and they all rocking, and they know the words too.”

For them –– and fans –– it still feels like 30 years ago. Coming off the 50th anniversary of hip hop and music industry-wide shake ups from lawsuits to rap beef, we can look forward to seeing Smif-N-Wessun enter the stage once again with some “super friends” for this “Still Shinin’ Tour.” “It’s Hip Hop, it’s going to be exciting,” says Steele. “I don’t want to say, ‘throwback’ but it’s going to have a feeling of just coming to a show and having fun.”

DJ Premier Featuring Lil Wayne, Rick Ross And Big Sean “Ya Don’t Stop”

unnamed 77

Dating back to the end of 2023, DJ Premier has been on a prolific run, releasing singles with Common, Russ, Snoop Dogg, Chance The Rapper and Nas.  When Premier and Nas released “Define My Name,” in April, they also revealed that their long-awaited and landmark collaborative album would be released later this year.

Now, DJ Premier has brought more legends and icons together, or as Rick Ross asserts “It’s the biggest in the game”, as Lil Wayne, Rick Ross, and Big Sean join him on “Ya Don’t Stop.” Premier’s cyclone of strings sets the stage for Ross, Sean and Wayne’s distinctive styles and vivid storytelling from three of the genre’s most influential artists.

“I’ve been on a run, and releasing singles more consistently.  I had an idea and wanted to initially get Wayne and Ross on the same track” DJ Premier recalled.  “I reached out to Rozay first and he sent me back vocals the same day.  I sent two tracks to Wayne to choose from and he sent both back the same night and told me to keep them both.  Big Sean called me to do a scratch hook for him.  In return, he hopped on as well.  Cipher complete!”

Action Bronson Talks To Apple Music About His “Beef” With David Schwimmer And Getting Covid From Mel Gibson

unnamed 75

Action Bronson sits down with Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1 to talk about his new album Johann Sebastian Bachlava The Doctor. In the wide-ranging interview, Action Bronson talks about recently getting arrested in France, how he got Covid from Mel Gibson, his “beef” with David Schwimmer, and his favorite Olympics moment.

He also shares lessons learned from fatherhood, his painting and where his artistic inspiration comes from, and what made him start to prioritize his health.

Action Bronson Tells Apple Music About Recently Getting Arrested In France…

Action Bronson: I went on vacation for 10 days. In Paris, I got locked up with my fucking driver. I was going to get pastries. My family were leaving. And I take him, we  go nine in the morning to my man Bertrand’s spot Tapestry. He had a box waiting for me. Fucking, we get caught at the light. There’s two cops over there. They’re talking to the driver. The driver’s wearing a suit and he has some sort of pin, and they questioned him about the pin. And apparently the pin is like, you work for the president. And they’re not having it because the Olympics are coming. So they pull them out, they question him. They arrested him for impersonating a police officer. They bring me in. They refuse to speak English, but they still leave me with the phone. I’m just like, “Yo, bro, I’m just trying to get to my family.”

Zane Lowe: I got my pastries.

Action Bronson: I didn’t get the pastries yet. So three hours. My man has to make the phone call. Somehow I text him, he calls them. He’s like, “Yo,” he calls the precinct. “He has the key to the city in Lyon, the mayor. This is going to cause a scandal, blah, blah, blah.” Somehow they fucking let me out. Three hours later I got the pastries, but my family had already left, so I was very angry. But there was no consolation except the pastry. I was just fucking pissed. I’m just saying, that’s how I started the tour.

Action Bronson Talks To Apple Music About What Changed To Make Him Start Prioritizing His Health…

It was actually shame. It was a shame that I had let myself get there, because I’ve always been an athlete. I was like, “What the fuck is going on? What is this?” Wearing fucking mumu shirts. I still like a good comfortable shirt, but my Lord, I was like, “What is this?” And having a brand new baby, you want to be around. I want to be around forever.

Action Bronson Tells Apple Music The Story About How Mel Gibson Gave Him Covid…

Zane Lowe: Mel Gibson did give you COVID.

Action Bronson: That’s a fact. I mean, I don’t like to tell this story, but I will. That bastard gave it to me for sure. It was at UFC, McConor Gregory. I mean, pah, McConor Gregory… Conor McGregor and fucking Dustin Poirier part three. This was the COVID days. He turned around, we were the only ones there at the prelims. There was no one there. It was just me and him. He turned, I was sat here. He sat in front. He turned around and kept saying shit to me in my face, like commenting on the punch and commenting on the kick. And then everyone got it. Me and four other guys got it.
