Lil Wayne Reiterates Desire To Headline 2025 Super Bowl Halftime Show

Lil Wayne has once again stated that he wants to headline the 2025 Super Bowl Halftime Show in New Orleans. However, Wayne revealed that he is yet to be contacted about the opportunity. “I will not lie to you, I have not got a call or nothing. But we are praying. We praying. We keeping our fingers crossed. I’m working hard. I’mma make sure this next album and everything I do is killer. I wanna just make it hard for them not to holler at the boy,” Wayne told the 4HUNNID podcast.

Wayne first broached his desire to do the show during an interview with Taylor Rooks and Bleacher Report last year. “Going to the Super Bowl and watching the Halftime Show and wishing, when you see the artist, you be like, ‘They could’ve sung the song that I was featured on!”. I’m featured on everybody’s song — you could’ve brought me out! Please do not feel disrespected if you’re an artist from New Orleans. Or an artist tied to me any kind of way in the music [industry], but know that’s my moment and I earned that moment. So no, I’m not bringing no one!” Wayne said. However, he later amended his statement to note that he would bring out Beyonce if she wanted to join him.

Lil Wayne Walks Back Anthony Davis Trade Talk

However, the 2025 Super Bowl is not the only thing that Wayne has been rehashing as of late. Wayne also reversed course on one of his bolder basketball takes, arguing that Anthony Davis is now irreplaceable for the Lakers. “You can’t get nobody for him that’s gon’ replace what he can do. There’s nobody out there like that. If you could get Jokic, but you can’t do that,” Wayne said on UNDISPUTED this week.

As mentioned, the sentiment is a major departure from something that Wayne had previously advocated for. “If the Lakers want to be a championship team, they have to get rid of AD,” the rapper said on the show last November. It was a bold take at the time, despite Davis’ injury struggles. He was still the No. 2 scoring option behind LeBron and his trade value was considered prohibitively high, at least in terms of immediate impact players.

Birdman & Slim Receive Keys To New Orleans

It’s no surprise that Birdman has received several accolades, and recently, his work in the music industry earned him one more. Earlier this week, the artist was given a key to his home city of New Orleans. His brother Slim, whom he co-founded Cash Money Records with, also accepted the award alongside the city’s mayor LaToya Cantrell.

In a new clip, Birdman and Slim are seen holding their awarded keys while Cantrell looks on in approval. “Nothing never came easy for us coming from Uptown,” Birdman began his brief speech. “I’m gonna continue. I’m not done with it. That’s why I never really cared about doing this, but I always felt like if you be honored that mean you finished what you been doing. I’m not finished yet.”

Birdman Says He’s “Not Finished Yet”

Birdman and Slim were met with applause from onlookers, as well as a few kind words from Mayor Cantrell. “Congratulations to Birdman & Slim!” a Tweet from earlier this week reads. “Yesterday I presented Keys to the City of New Orleans to Bryan ‘Birdman’ Williams & Ronald ‘Slim’ Williams. Thanks for your contributions to music & commitment to the community. Johnny and Gladys Williams would be PROUD.” While Birdman certainly has no problems generating his own success, he’s also able to see the potential in others, as evidenced by his relationship with Drake.

During an interview with JalenTV, he recalled meeting Drizzy for the first time, admitting that he knew he was destined to be a star. “First time I met him I told him he gonna be a legend,” he described last month. “He was like ‘For real?’ I’m like ‘Yeah, Drake. You gonna be a f*cking legend in this game.’ Cuz the Hip Hop ain’t heard nothing like that.” What do you think of Birdman and Slim getting honored with Keys to New Orleans? What about the message Birdman shared after receiving the key? Share your thoughts in the comments section down below, and keep an eye on HNHH for more updates.

Lil Wayne Wants 2025 Super Bowl Halftime Show

Lil Wayne has expressed his desire to headline the 2025 Super Bowl Halftime show in New Orleans. Going to the Super Bowl and watching the Halftime Show and wishing, when you see the artist, you be like, ‘They could’ve sung the song that I was featured on!”. I’m featured on everybody’s song — you could’ve brought me out! Please do not feel disrespected if you’re an artist from New Orleans. Or an artist tied to me any kind of way in the music [industry], but know that’s my moment and I earned that moment. So no, I’m not bringing no one!” Wayne told Taylor Rooks of Bleacher Report.

There has just been one other rapper to headline the Super Bowl Halftime show. That was the Dre-led show in 2022 that featured the creme de la creme of West Coast rap (as well as Eminem). To give an artist like Wayne a solo show (although the did say there would be an exception to his guest rule for Beyonce), would be a major step for the NFL.

Lil Wayne Reveals Unreleased Kevin Durant Collab

Elsewhere in the interview, Wayne also revealed that he had an unreleased track featuring Kevin Durant. The track was at one time considered for inclusion on ColleGrove 2. Instead, Wayne decided to save it for a later project. However, Wayne was caught off-guard after Rooks revealed that she knew about the track. “I just want you to know you messed up. That song was being considered to be on Carter VI and now since you’re saying something, it’s not goin’ on Carter VI,” Wayne joked, directing his response at Durant himself.

Furthermore, Wayne had a lot to say about Durant’s skills as a rapper. “KD’s a jewel. He’s a backpack rapper. I can imagine he probably could call a timeout in a game, and probably ask him to rap and he probably got a verse for you,” Wayne mused. The content of Durant’s song with Wayne is as yet unknown. However, KD does have some experience in the music industry. He has a song with LeBron James and was recently credited as A&R on Drake‘s For All The Dogs.

She earned this title on May 7, 2018, making this moment for Gates all the more special. While there is no official name for this award, the meaning behind it is what makes it all worth it.

Rob49 On Birdman Passing The Torch & Names His Top 5 NOLA Rappers Of All Time

New Orleans is a pivotal city in hip-hop’s landscape. A place where the entrepreneurial ventures of Birdman and Master P set the blueprint for independent rap across the world and elevated the names of artists like Lil Wayne and Snoop Dogg to GOAT status. Birdman, specifically, has made a concerted effort to elevate the South throughout the years, whether forming groups like Rich Gang or going to bat for artists like NBA Youngboy. The latest rapper that Birdman took under his wing is Rob49 – the 24-year-old rapper that’s ushering in a new era for NOLA.

On Friday, June 8th, he unveiled his latest body of work 4GOD II, a culmination of his ascent to stardom in the past year. It arrived ahead of his second annual Vulture Island Weekend in his hometown which included a celebrity basketball game and a concert where he was able to connect with fans for the first time in a long time. Ultimately, it was an event that furthers the notion that he currently holds the throne for the city. It’s no surprise that Birdman officially passed him the torch on the intro to 2022’s Welcome To Vulture Island – an act that seemed like a far-fetched reality to him a few years ago.

“When he first did it, it really didn’t mean nothing to me,” he told HotNewHipHop of his initial reaction to Birdman formally passing him the torch. That is until a few months ago when he revisited the intro to Welcome To Vulture Island. “I was like, man, this is the new New Orleans, like this is Birdman. I started thinking about where I was when I was in high school and middle school and shit. We would listen to this sh*t and it was just so far-fetched for us. I’m just like, ‘damn, this is really it and he’s giving it to you,’ so it was a big thing for me.”

Birdman’s become a guiding force in Rob49’s career, having been one of the first people who tried to sign the rapper to Cash Money. Although the deal didn’t pan out, the Cash Money co-founder evidently wanted to see Rob49 prosper regardless. He recently featured on the single, “Woedy” from 4GOD II, a song that Rob revealed nearly didn’t make the final cut of his album. “[Birdman] told me to stop separating my feet and put both of my feet in rap. That’s the biggest advice he told me and I did it and it worked for me. That’s the biggest advice he told me and it works,” he explained.

While Birdman came through as a pivotal force in Rob49’s career, he’s among the several New Orleans natives that helped shape the budding star’s artistry. During our conversation, he listed his top 5 NOLA rappers of all time, which includes the obvious choice of Lil Wayne. “Soulja Slim because he just reminds me of myself. Like, his wordplay, his aura – he just reminds me of myself,” he explained. “Lil Wayne because he’s just the best rapper alive.”

Although Soulja Slim became one of No Limit’s most legendary signees, it’s evident that the sounds of Cash Money resonated deeply with Rob49 throughout his come-up. In addition to Slim and Weezy, he listed Juvenile, Birdman’s nephew, Nino Calvin, and B.G. to round out his top 5. “Juvie had that project in him that we have in New Orleans,” he stated.

Biggest Misconception About New Orleans Hip-Hop?

Louisiana, as a whole, has had a grip on the hip-hop landscape, but it’s hard to deny the number of fierce lyricists. New Orleans, specifically, birthed the talents of both Lil Wayne and Jay Electronica – two MCs who’ve earned their position among hip-hop’s elite. However, New Orleans hasn’t necessarily gained a reputation for being sharp wordsmiths. Some have even gone as far to say that rappers from the city don’t even bother rhyming their words.

“I think the biggest misconception is like us with our rhyming pattern,” Rob49 said. “I know people are like, ‘Oh, they don’t rhyme,’ but New Orleans people, we talk our sh*t. Like, that’s what we grew up on, you know what I’m sayin’? We just poppin’ it. We ain’t trying to rhyme.”

Juvenile Will Be Playing At Essence Festival After All

It looks like the drama between Juvenile and Essence Fest may have just been swept under the rug. The artist recently announced his upcoming performance at Essence Fest on social media. He expressed excitement after previously criticizing the festival for excluding him. Taking to Twitter on June 7, the renowned New Orleans artist shared the news that he will be taking the stage on June 30. He also shared a custom-designed flyer. Along with the announcement, Juvenile encouraged fans to visit the festival’s official website to learn more and purchase tickets. In the tweet, he cheekily wrote, “Hip-Hop 50 without Juvie? Not a chance. June 30th, NOLA we live!”

It wasn’t always positive sentiments for the former Hot Boy regarding the festival, however. Essence Fest previously got into some hot water with Juvenile. They had excluded him from their lineup for “The South Got Something To Say” set. It was curated by Jermaine Dupri and pays tribute to OutKast’s iconic 1995 Source Awards speech. Notable artists such as Big Boi, Gucci Mane, Lil Jon, Ludacris, and T.I. were listed as being part of the segment. However, Juvenile was noticeably absent, leading to his dissatisfaction.

Juvenile Is A New Orleans Staple

Last week, a bit of drama ensued online following Juvenile’s exclusion from Essence Fest. The former Cash Money artist expressed his displeasure about the perceived slight on Twitter. “How is Essence doing 50 years of hip hop in New Orleans without me???” he asked. It was definitely an awkward oversight on the part of the festival. While it likely was not done on purpose, it called into question how they could forget to include a New Orleans staple like Juvie.

Following the exclusion from Essence Fest, Juvenile decided to promote another festival he will be participating in alongside Mannie Fresh, called Donna Fest. “F that Donna Fest July 2nd, me with my live band + Mannie Fresh + Rebirth & more,” the rapper wrote enthusiastically. “And the best food vendors New Orleans has to offer. I should know, I’m from here! Our [tickets] are just $25!” Now it looks like Juvenile has his hands pretty full with two performances. What do you think of Essence Fest changing their tune? Sound off in the comments below!

Nate Diaz Turns Himself In After Viral Fight

Last Friday, MMA fighter Nate Diaz engaged in an altercation with an unnamed man outside a boxing event in New Orleans. The incident ended with Diaz putting the man into a chokehold and rendering him unconscious. Diaz’s representative claimed that their client was innocent and acting in self-defense. However, a warrant was issued for Diaz’s arrest on Monday.

The fight was the culmination of a tumultuous evening for Diaz, who had gotten into an argument with reality star-turned-boxer Chase DeMoor during the boxing event. After the man fell unconscious, Diaz was seen dropping him to the pavement and walking away. His actions were initially praised by the likes of Dana White and Connor McGregor. However, there has now been a new update in Diaz’s case.

Diaz Voluntarily Surrenders To Police

Nate Diaz is now in police custody, according to his representative Zach Rosenfield. Rosenfield told TMZ that Diaz had turned himself in at 7:10am local time Thursday morning. He has since been booked and is being held on a charge of second-degree battery. Rosenfield added that “We continue to look forward to presenting all the evidence and videos that show Nate was acting in self-defense.” While Diaz’s team claims self-defense, it remains to be seen if the police will deem his response “proportional”. After all, Diaz’s day job involves choking people into submission, which changes the nature of things slightly. However, no further details were made available at the time of writing.

Diaz, 38, is currently a free agent after declining to re-sign with the UFC last year. His most recent career fight was at UFC 279 in September 2022, where he beat Tony Ferguson. However, Diaz is scheduled to fight Jake Paul in a boxing match this August. That fight would be Diaz’s professional boxing debut. It is unlikely that the current legal proceedings would prevent him from competing. Fellow fighter Jorge Masvidal has been able to compete in professional fights following his alleged assault on Colby Covington in March 2022. However, be sure to follow all the updates in Diaz’s case here on HotNewHipHop.

Nate Diaz Chokes Out Man In New Orleans

Nate Diaz hasn’t been in the Octagon since September 2022. Despite scoring a win over Tony Ferguson in that UFC 279 bout, Diaz had refused to re-sign with Dana White’s organization. Diaz, who is 38, is yet to sign another promotion or return to the UFC. His next fight is scheduled to a boxing match.

That brings us to April 21, when Diaz was in New Orleans for Misfits Boxing 6. At the event, Diaz got into a confrontation with Chase DeMoor. DeMoor, a reality star who was fighting on the event’s undercard, was disqualified from his fight after striking his opponent after the final bell. DeMoor was seen heckling Diaz, going as far as to call him a “pussy”, before Diaz responded. Diaz threw a water bottle at DeMoor, who was seated behind him. Diaz was then removed from the venue. However, things escalated for Diaz later in the night.

Diaz Chokes Man On Street

In a video published by TMZ, Diaz was seen arguing with a man outside the venue of the boxing event. To clarify before we continue, this was not a continuation of the argument with DeMoor. The two briefly engage in a physical altercation before Diaz caught the man in a choke hold. Diaz does not release the man until he is unconscious before letting him fall to the ground. It is unknown at this time what the extent of the man’s injuries are, or if the police have become involved. The man in question bears a striking resemblance to YouTuber and WWE star, Logan Paul.

What is known, however, is that the video quickly went viral. There was brief speculation that the man was Logan Paul but his actual identity is still unknown. The video garnered reactions from White (“He knocked him out? Whoever that, is he knocked him out! He choked him out!) and Conor McGregor (“Lovely little knee to the body hahahaa. Hahaha Nate on a rampage tonight! Let’s go Nate! Hahaha.”). Diaz is currently scheduled to fight Jake Paul in August. However, if there are any updates on his NOLA confrontation, be sure to check back here at HotNewHipHop.
