Earlier this week, André 3000 announced that he’d be making his return with a brand new solo album titled New Blue Sun.

His album is set to drop this Friday, November 17 at midnight. For those who might be wondering, it also will likely be available to stream on Spotify, as it is listed being one of the options on the pre-save link from Sony.

It is also available for pre-order currently, but only as a digital download.

While Outkast fans might have been hoping for a rap record, he’s made it very clear that it won’t be what they expect. “I don’t want to troll people,” André said during a recent interview with NPR Music. “I don’t want people to think, ‘Oh, this André 3000 album is coming!’ And you play it and like, ‘Oh man, no verses.’ So even actually on the packaging, you’ll see it says, ‘Warning: no bars.’”

As for what the album will sound like, it has been described as “an entirely instrumental album centered around woodwinds; a celebratory piece of work in the form of a living, breathing, aural organism,” according to a statement. Basically, he won’t be giving any lyrics at all.

New Blue Sun is out 11/17 via Epic Records. Find more information here.

Andre 3000 Recalls Turning Into A “Panther” During A Wild Ayahuasca Trip In Hawaii

Andre 3000 says he once “turned into a panther” during an ayahuasca trip in Hawaii. He recalled the experience while speaking with NPR for a new interview ahead of the release of his upcoming album, New Blue Sun. The Outkast rapper plans to release the project on Friday, November 17.

He references the incident in the title of his song, “That Night In Hawaii When I Turned Into A Panther And Started Making These Low Register Purring Tones That I Couldn’t Control Sh¥t Was Wild.” Speaking with NPR, he explained: “I was actually in Hawaii and it was my second night of the first time I’d ever taken ayahuasca. We did it like a three-night kind of phase. The first night was inviting and beautiful and the most powerful love and connection with all things I’ve ever felt in my life. The second night was different and everybody knows that aya will do you that way. The second night my stomach was hurting, my mouth contorted like a panther and I actually turned into a panther. And I was doing like, ‘GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR’ — like, that kind of thing.”

He continued: “I actually turned into a panther. It was doing this thing called toning. Toning is another way of purging. And toning is where you make these vibrational noises that you can’t control. It started playing me like an instrument. I started as a panther and then it would make me do these long kind of tones and started changing the notes.” He added that he used that purring noise as an inspiration for the aforementioned track on New Blue Sun.

“So, on the album I’m mimicking [it], but the funny thing in the aya session, I was like, ‘Damn, I wish I had my phone so I can record this ’cause, like, it’d be so dope,’” he explained. Be on the lookout for further updates on Andre 3000’s New Blue Sun in the coming days on HotNewHipHop.

André 3000 is finally releasing a solo album and it’s called New Blue Sun — but there’s a catch. André’s upcoming solo album, which marks his first album of any kind in 17 years, isn’t a rap record, but rather an instrumental record showcasing his flute stylings.

But nonetheless, fans are still excited to finally get new music from the Outkast alum.

“I’ve been interested in winds for a long time, so it was just a natural progression for me to go into flutes,” André said in a statement. “I just like messing with instruments and I gravitated mostly toward wind.”

Andre 3000 Explains His Stance On Dropping A Rap Album

Andre 3000 is an artist who has a legendary legacy as it pertains to rap music. He and Big Boi were an incredible duo in Outkast and they delivered classic albums. Overall, fans have always wanted Andre to deliver a solo rap album. However, he has never actually done it. This has subsequently led to frustration from some fans. Sure, he has given us some pretty legendary features, but he doesn’t seem keen on a rap album. Today, he announced a new instrumental album called New Blue Sun, and it has fans curious.

This project will feature him playing the flute. Furthermore, there will be all sorts of other instruments throughout the project. At this stage, there is no telling what the album might sound like. All we know is that the names of the songs are pretty intense. That said, in a press release for the new album, Andre 3000 actually addressed the idea that he will never drop a rap album. Simply put, the concept of doing one interests him. It is just a question of doing it in a way that makes sense for him.

“There’s this misconception that I just won’t do it,” he said. “I think people feel like I’m sitting around on rap albums, or sitting around and I’m just not putting them out in that way. And no it’s not like that. In my mind, I really would like to make a rap album. So maybe that happens one day, but I got to find a way to say what I want to say in an interesting way that’s appealing to me at this age.” Overall, it could be years before we get a rap album from Andre. However, when it does come, it will be special.

Andre 3000 Says He Played His New Album for Tyler, the Creator and Frank Ocean to Test a Younger Audience

AndreAdmitshe'sNotMotivatedtoCompletea'Serious'Project

Andre 3000 pulled up to NPR to speak with Rodney Carmichael about his forthcoming album. One of the interesting pieces from the interview is he gave an exclusive listen to Tyler, the Creator and Frank Ocean.

I wanted to see how a younger audience would perceive it. I live in Cali now, so I reached out to Tyler for him to check it out and I went to his house.

So we’re sitting there and Frank [Ocean] just happened to drop by. So it’s us three sitting there listening to these three songs and I just kind of wanted to get an opinion. And it was just good for me to hear with somebody else. Because sometimes you can be in your own thing and think it’s a certain thing and you just want to have some outside… not that it really matters, because once you believe in it enough — I mean, I take criticism all the time, but it’s not like, ‘Hey, do you like it or not?’ It’s ‘How can we help it?’ So at that point, I felt like we had something because we had a nice day just enjoying it in a way. And I started just playing it for friends and playing it for artists and playing it for people I respect or people who I felt would get it.

Andre explained that he wanted to get an idea of how fans would react to the new music, so he went to Tyler. From there, he detailed how both artists responded to the album: “Tyler was staring at this thing that he has in his house… he’s a fan of travel suitcases and so he has a wall of like travel suitcases. And he was like, ‘Man, I’ve been trying to figure out how to configure these like Louis suitcases.’ And he was listening to one of the songs and he was like, ‘It sounds like you’re chasing a butterfly through a garden and I figured it out. It helped me to figure out how to do this.’ And I think Frank pointed out one of his favorite tracks out of the three.” He added: “And I was just happy to hear that, ’cause I respect them as musicians. Like new energy; they’re going for it, man. So I really respect their opinions. I play it for my homies. I play it for friends, play it for artists, directors — just to see their reaction more than anything. So I was just happy with what I was getting.”

Andre 3000’s Tracklist For “New Blue Sun” Has Some Of The Wildest Song Titles You” Ever See

Andre 3000 is an album that fans have been begging for an album from. However, over the years, he has not been able to deliver on that. Overall, some believe he would be the GOAT of hip-hop if he actually had a plethora of albums. Unfortunately, that has not been the case. Fortunately, he will be dropping an album on Friday called New Blue Sun. The catch here is that this album will not feature any vocals. Instead, the artist will be playing various instruments.

Three Stacks got to talk about his new album with NPR recently. He made it clear that he wanted to drop something that spoke to him. Although he wanted to make a rap album, he decided that he wanted to go in an instrumental direction instead. As you will see, the song titles for this new project are bonkers. The titles are long, drawn out, and probably only make sense to Andre himself.

The Wild Tracklist For André 3000’s New Album Mentions Everybody From Beyoncé To Jeffrey Dahmer To Jesus

Hip-hop’s 50th anniversary reminded fans of the genre just how much they’ve missed André 3000. For weeks, Killer Mike teased that the former Outkast member would soon drop his long-awaited solo debut studio album. However, given the false flags in the past, supporters took it as a joke. It turns out the joke is on the public because Mike ended up being right.

Today (November 14), André revealed to NPR Music that his forthcoming project, New Blue Sun, is due out this Friday, November 17. Although the body of work isn’t a stand-alone rap release, the wild tracklist alone was enough to spike interest; The listing mentions everybody from Beyoncé to Jesus. Ghandi, the Dalai Lama, Ted Bundy, Jeffrey Dahmer, and John Wayne Gacy are also named in the record’s titles. Without any new verses or bars coming from André on the upcoming album, he had to find a way to verbalize his inspiration somehow.

Is André 3000’s New Album ‘New Blue Sun’ A Rap Album?

André 3000 announced that he’s returning with his first solo album, New Blue Sun, giving fans something to look forward to extremely soon — as he is dropping it this Friday, November 17.

However, during an interview with NPR, he clarified that some Outkast fans who might be expecting a rap album might be disappointed, and he wanted to warn them beforehand.

“I don’t want to troll people,” André said. “I don’t want people to think, ‘Oh, this André 3000 album is coming!’ And you play it and like, ‘Oh man, no verses.’ So even actually on the packaging, you’ll see it says, ‘Warning: no bars.’”

According to a statement, it will instead be “an entirely instrumental album centered around woodwinds; a celebratory piece of work in the form of a living, breathing, aural organism.”

He also hilariously pokes fun at it by naming the album’s opening song “I swear, I Really Wanted To Make A “Rap” Album But This Is Literally The Way The Wind Blew Me This Time.” (Somehow, that’s not the strangest song title on the record.)

André 3000 Is Finally Releasing His Debut Solo Album But It’s Not What You Might Expect (Or Maybe It Is, Actually)

Andre 3000
Kai Regan

For years now, Outkast fans have been waiting and waiting (and waiting) for André 3000 to release a solo album. Now, he finally is, although musically speaking, it might not meet Outkast fans’ expectations.

In a new interview with NPR Music shared today (November 14), André announced the project: It’s called New Blue Sun and it’s set for release really soon, on November 17. It’s not a rap album, though; André said, “I don’t want to troll people. I don’t want people to think, ‘Oh, this André 3000 album is coming!’ And you play it and like, ‘Oh man, no verses.’ So even actually on the packaging, you’ll see it says, ‘Warning: no bars.’”

To his point, the first song on the album is titled “I swear, I Really Wanted To Make A “Rap” Album But This Is Literally The Way The Wind Blew Me This Time.” The other titles on the tracklist (find that below) are equally unconventional.

NPR described the project as “a stunning 87-minute mind-bender, minimalist and experimental, tribal and transcendent” and noted, “One thing it is not, however, is a rap record: No bars, no beats, no sub-bass. André doesn’t sing on this joint, either. What he does do is play flute, and plenty of it — contrabass flute, Mayan flutes, bamboo flutes — along with other digital wind instruments.”

While this is definitely a musical departure, it’s not a complete surprise, given that André has, on multiple occasions in recent years, been spotted out and about playing the flute in public.
