N.W.A. To Receive Lifetime Achievement Award At The 2024 Grammys

N.W.A

In a momentous celebration of musical legacy, the iconic West Coast rap ensemble N.W.A. is set to receive the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award during the upcoming Grammy weekend.

N.W.A. Honored

The legendary West Coast rap group N.W.A. is set to be honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award during Grammy weekend. Recognized at The Recording Academy’s Special Merit Awards ceremony, the Compton-based ensemble, featuring Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, DJ Yella, MC Ren, and the late Eazy E, is credited with shaping the subgenre of Gangsta rap with their raw and impactful lyrics about life in Compton.

The group from Compton, California consisting of, Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, DJ Yella, MC-Ren, and the late Eazy E developed a new sound and is credited with creating the subgenre, Gangsta rap. They were known for their brash, raw lyrics about life in Compton that also had violent content.

‘Straight Outta Compton’

N.W.A. was also known as one of the most controversial music acts of all time and even had politicians condemning their music.  In 1988, the iconic group released their album, Straight Outta Compton, a brutally intense record that became an underground hit without any support from radio or MTV, who didn’t play N.W.A. ‘s music on their channel.

Other recipients that will receive a Lifetime Achievement Award include iconic singers such as The Clark Sisters, Gladys Knight, Laurie Anderson, and late singers such as Donna Summer and Tammy Wynette.

DJ Kool Herc, who is considered the “Godfather of Hip-Hop,” will be honored with a Trustee Award at the Special Merit Awards as well. DJ Kool Herc hosted the block party in the Bronx, New York in 1973 that started hip-hop.

The Special Merit Awards will be held on Saturday, Feb. 3, at the Wilshire Ebell Theatre in Los Angeles, the day before the 2024 Grammys

EAZY-E Way

In other N.W.A. news, the late member Eazy E was honored by the city of Compton with a street being renamed after him in November 2023. This recognition comes after he was shunned in hip-hop following his death, with rumors about his sexuality due to complications from AIDS-like pneumonia.

RZA To Be Honored With TEC Award

One other rap legend that will also be honored is RZA. The leader of the legendary rap collective Wu-Tang Clan will receive the TEC Innovation Award from the National Association of Music Merchants at the TEC Awards on January 27.

In November, the Recording Academy unfurled its nominees for the 2024 Grammys, but it saved the best for last. This morning, January 5, the Recording Academy announced this year’s Lifetime Achievement Award recipients as Laurie Anderson, the Clark Sisters, Donna Summer, Gladys Knight, N.W.A., and Tammy Wynette. Summer, Wynette, and Eazy E of N.W.A. are posthumous honorees.

“The Academy is honored to pay tribute to this year’s Special Merit Award recipients — a remarkable group of creators and industry professionals whose impact resonates with generations worldwide,” Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr. said in a statement. “Their contributions to music span genres, backgrounds, and crafts, reflecting the rich diversity that fuels our creative community. We look forward to honoring these music industry trailblazers next month as part of our week-long celebration leading up to Music’s Biggest Night.”

The 2024 Grammys are scheduled for Sunday, February 4, at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California, with Trevor Noah returning as the host for the fourth consecutive year. The ceremony will broadcast live on CBS, stream live on Paramount+, and be available on-demand on Paramount+.

The Lifetime Achievement Award is under the umbrella of the 2024 Special Merit Awards, and The Recording Academy’s Special Merit Awards Ceremony will take place on Saturday, February 3, at LA’s Wilshire Ebell Theatre.

N.W.A. Members: Where Are They Now?

N.W.A. first hit the music scene in 1987, before cementing themselves as a landmark hip hop group. Together, the six young Compton natives who composed the group redefined an era and popularized the gangsta rap sub-genre. N.W.A.’s greatest hits such as “F*** Tha Police,” “Straight Outta Compton,” and “Dopeman” all serve as political statements. The group’s music enlightened middle America to the plight of black Americans in inner cities across the country. Though several of the surviving members have reunited since the group parted ways, N.W.A. is largely considered to have ended as a group with the 1995 passing of Eazy-E, leaving many fans to wonder what the remaining members have been doing in the decades since.

Eazy-E

Eric Wright, best known by his stage name Eazy-E, was a founding member of N.W.A. alongside Dr. Dre. Under the tutelage of record producer Jerry Heller, Eazy started the record label Ruthless Records. Unfortunately, Eazy-E found himself at the center of a bitter rivalry with his fellow N.W.A. members in 1991. The beef began over payment and contract rights, with several key members claiming the record label had taken advantage of them. After several years of throwing shots back and forth at each other on wax, the members of N.W.A. buried the hatchet after learning of Eazy-E’s AIDS diagnosis in 1995. Eazy tragically passed away at the age of 30 from complications relating to his illness on March 26th, 1995.

Dr. Dre

Perhaps the most prolific N.W.A. member of them all, Dr. Dre has established himself in the modern era as one of rap’s few billionaires. The mogul went on to start Aftermath Entertainment, signing and producing such mega stars as Eminem and 50 Cent. Dr. Dre has also served as something of a musical mentor to rappers such as Kendrick Lamar, Anderson .Paak, The Game, and many others. In 2006 Dre collaborated with his partner Jimmy Iovine to bring Beats headphones to market. The Beats brand expanded into a line of high-quality speakers and headsets, before selling the technology to Apple. The 2014 sale went through for $3.4 billion.

In addition to his extracurricular ventures, Dr. Dre headlined the Super Bowl LVI halftime show in 2022. In 2023, Dr. Dre was presented with the inaugural Dr. Dre Global Impact Award at the 65th Annual Grammys. The award was created to celebrate excellence and longevity in rap while recognizing the 50th anniversary of the genre. Dr. Dre served as a producer on the 2015 N.W.A. biopic Straight Outta Compton alongside Ice Cube.

Ice Cube

Ice Cube has become a household name in the decades following the demise of N.W.A., with a prolific screen acting career that rivals the success of his extensive solo music catalog. Since leaving N.W.A. to go solo in 1989, Ice Cube has released 10 solo albums, 3 collaborative efforts, and racked up countless appearances on film and television soundtracks. Ice Cube has also gone on to establish an incredible career in film and television.

Cube has amassed nearly 100 credits on IMDb, including half a dozen projects in various stages of active production. Alongside Dr. Dre, Ice Cube produced the 2015 film Straight Outta Compton, which follows the group’s rise and fall. The film even featured Cube’s eldest son, O’Shea Jackson Jr. as a young version of himself. O’Shea Jr. has gone on to lead several feature films since, with Straight Outta Compton serving as his first feature appearance. Ice Cube has also embarked into the world of sports as the CEO and co-founder of the Big3 basketball league.

DJ Yella

Though he is often forgotten due to his lack of vocal performance in most N.W.A. tracks, DJ Yella served as a vital element of the group’s success. Like Dr. Dre and Ice Cube, Yella consulted on the set of Straight Outta Compton. Yella provided invaluable insight into the formation and history of the group for the film. When N.W.A. split up, DJ Yella served as one of the few members who didn’t get involved with the beef. Yella remained signed to Ruthless Records, producing music for Eazy-E and other label artists.

After releasing a solo album in 1996, Yella retired from music to pursue a career directing and producing adult films. According to interviews with the former N.W.A. DJ, he has helmed over 300 films of this nature. DJ Yella returned to his position behind the boards in 2011 when he began to work on an album titled West Coastin. Then he appeared on stage in 2016 during an N.W.A. reunion at Coachella and appeared in an interview for the 2017 docu-series The Defiant Ones.

Arabian Prince

Though Arabian Prince serves as one of N.W.A.’s founding members, the rapper is often left out of the group’s stories due to his early departure from the collective. Prince left N.W.A. shortly after Straight Outta Compton debuted in 1988, citing issues with the label’s payment and billing practices. Due to Arabian Prince’s previous experience in the music industry, the rapper was acutely aware of proper billing procedures, which he claims did not take place at Ruthless Records. This sentiment would later be echoed when Ice Cube departed the collective in 1989.

Despite being pictured front and center on the Straight Outta Compton album cover, Arabian Prince was not depicted or mentioned at any point in the 2015 biopic of the same name. Likewise, the rapper was left out of N.W.A.’s 2016 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In recent years, Prince has found success launching a video effects company, touring as a solo DJ, and even adapting a comic book titled Death For Hire: The Origin of Tehk City into an upcoming television project alongside Ice-T.

MC Ren

The final N.W.A. member on this list, MC Ren, has continued to record and release music to this day. Like DJ Yella, MC Ren remained signed to Eazy-E’s Ruthless Records after the other members had departed from the group. While occasionally popping up on Eazy-E releases for the following few years, Ren got working on his solo catalog. As a solo artist, MC Ren has released four solo albums and two EPs.

MC Ren’s latest musical effort is the EP Osiris, released in June 2022. The record spans 8 tracks, and contains features from fellow West Coast legends including Kurupt, Kokane, and Cold 187um. MC Ren joined his fellow N.W.A. members on stage at Coachella in 2016.

Unveiling the Most Iconic Hip-Hop Album Covers: N.W.A., Dr. Dre, 2 Live Crew & More

Dr. Dre, Kanye West, Kendrick Lamar

SOHH explores the most iconic hip-hop album covers, this lineup features memorable artworks like N.W.A.’s Straight Outta Compton, Dr. Dre’s The Chronic, and Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp a Butterfly. These covers encapsulate the essence of their respective albums and stand as cultural landmarks within the hip-hop genre.

N.W.A. – ‘Straight Outta Compton’

NWA was a rap group consisting of Ice Cube, Eazy-E, DJ Yella, MC Ren, The D.O.C., Arabian Prince, and DJ Speed.

The conglomerate was formed in 1987 when hip-hop and rap were used to express frustrations with government and politics. The angle of the photograph is lowered while all members of NWA stare down into the frame. Eazy E is seen holding a pistol, possibly symbolizing how they see themselves compared to the perspective of a cop.

The August 8, 1988, album included iconic songs such as “Gangsta, Gangsta,” “Dope Man(Remix),” “F*** Tha Police,” and “Straight Outta Compton” to name a few.

According to CNN, “The photograph is considered one of the most provocative ever to grace an album cover: six guys staring toward the ground, one pointing a handgun. It was the cover art for Straight Outta Compton, the pioneering debut album by N.W.A., that revolutionized gangsta rap and redefined hip hop.

Dr. Dre’s ‘The Chronic’

Although Dr. Dre got his name out there with NWA, he got his official start with World Class Wreckin’ Crew. The Chronic was a tribute to the street life of Compton, California.

Most importantly, the December 15 1992 album cover, which pays homage to the “Zig Zag Rolling Papers.” The renowned rolling paper brand played a special part in California street life and cinema storytelling.

One of the more well-known references can be seen in the movie “The Wood.” Boo ( who is portrayed by Antwon Tanner) says to his homeboy Stacey ( who is portrayed by DeAndre Bonds) “Ayo pass that sh** back this way.” Stacey replies, “ F*** you boy, you aint gettin’ no zig zag, you aint gettin’ no drig drag.”

The Fugees – ‘The Score’

Wyclef Jean, Lauryn Hill, and Pras were the three members to make up The Fugees

The name comes from the shortened word ‘refugees.’ The group rose to prominence in the mid-1990s with their unique blends of reggae, R&B, hip hop, and funk.

The cover of the group’s most popular album, The Score, is a minimalistic style photograph that pictures all three members on an intense black background, with the faces of the trio peeking through the blackness of it all. Simultaneously, their faces are highlighted with a golden light shining upon them all.

The words “The Fugees” are written in a burnt yellow, car wash font. The accent colors of gold and burnt yellow could possibly symbolize the way the words and beats make listeners feel when they hear their music.

Reunited And It Feels So Good

The Fugees’ highly anticipated reunion occurred at the 2023 Roots Picnic, leaving fans thrilled and nostalgic. Lauryn Hill, Wyclef Jean, and Pras Michel met for an exceptional performance during Lauryn Hill’s solo headlining set at Philadelphia’s The Mann Center on June 3, 2023.

Kendrick Lamar ‘To Pimp A Butterfly’

One of Lamar’s most highly anticipated albums, How To Pimp A Butterfly was released on March 15,  2015.

The album was one of Kendrick’s highlights of his career. The album’s black and white cover details an all black and white cover details a deceased, white man wearing a suit, with a gavel in his hand, insinuating that he is a judge. Over him stands 2 black boys, one of whom seems to be a younger, Kendrick Lamar, and a host of black men and women, with the White House in the background.

Similarly to NWA’s album cover, Lamar’s album cover is symbolic of the stance Black families took against the American Justice System, the long history of injustice for African Americans, and the overrepresentation in the prison system.

It is also imperative to mention this album was released during the presidential term of Obama, America’s first Black President,  which gives even more reason as to why the white judge is dead.

Kanye West ‘Graduation’

This iconic album was the project that made fans everywhere fall in love with West’s artistry.

Graduation was released on September 11, 2007. The cover art had always been admired by listeners alike. The cover pictures a vibrant sunset sky with shades of violets, yellow, and a hint of midnight blue. The angle of the lens seems to be zoomed out with a spectacle from outer space.

In the sunset lies a flying teddy bear ( similar to West’s Dropout Bear), with a graduation cap which is the foundation for his institution.

The institution, which seems to be celebrating graduation is surrounded by abstract colors, rockets, and explosions.  In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, album cover designer, Takashi Murakami( often referred to as the Warhol of Japan), stated:

“The cover is based on Kanye’s theme of student life. School. It’s a place of dreams, of righteousness, a place to have fun. It’s also occasionally a place where you experience the rigid dogma of the human race.”

Kanye West Is Back

Kanye West returned to the music scene with the highly anticipated release of new music. The album marked his first release since Donda 2 dropped in February 2022.

2 Live Crew “As Nasty As They Wanna Be”

Members Fresh Kid Ice, Uncle Luke, Mr. Mixx, Amazing V., and Verb were the members to make up the iconic 2 Live Crew

The group’s musical influence helped push and test the boundaries of hip-hop during the era, which still stands strong today. The February 7, 1989, album’s cover art displays the group at the beach, and standing over them are four nearly nude women.

The cover of the album was seen as controversial, in which the 2 Live Crew explored sexual themes. The legal battles Uncle Luke and the crew faced made major leeway in how artists chose to rap, dance, and dress in the hip-hop industry.

Uncle Luke Speaks Out Against HH50

Uncle Luke expressed frustration with the lack of recognition for Florida artists in the music industry on hip hop’s 50th anniversary. The Miami rapper addressed the industry’s long-standing disregard for Florida hip-hop.

A Rewind In Time

Speaking of iconic, some songs have become timeless sources of inspiration for newer artists. From Khia’s explicit anthem “My Neck My Back” to Aaliyah’s mesmerizing “One In A Million,” these classic tracks continue influencing and shaping the rap scene.

Eazy-E Dedicated His Life To Compton, So The City Is Finally Repaying Him With A Street Named In His Honor

Eazy-E

In January 2020, Ice Cube stopped by Uproxx‘s People’s Party With Talib Kweli and discussed the backstory of the late Eazy-E’s “Boyz N The Hood.” Cube explained that the song was originally meant for a New York-based group named Homeboys Only, but it wasn’t a lyrical fit, so “[Dr.] Dre convinced Eazy to do it.”

But Eazy-E never needed convincing to stump for Compton, California, his hometown that was put on the map by him, Cube, and the rest of N.W.A. Now Compton will make Eazy-E’s relationship to Compton tangibly and permanently inextricable.

According to several Los Angeles-based outlets, such as ABC7 and KTLA, the 100 block of Auto Drive South, located on Alameda Street and runs into the Gateway Towne Center shopping plaza, will be renamed Eazy Street.

Per The Los Angeles Times, “A block party will be held at the street on November 22 to celebrate the moment with performances and appearances from the ‘Boyz-n-the-Hood’ rapper’s children and his former collaborators.” The paper also noted that Compton City Council previously voted unanimously to rename the street in September.

Eazy-E passed away in March 1995 at just 30 years old. Mere days prior he had publicly disclosed his AIDS diagnosis.

“My dad loved where he was from,” Eazy-E’s daughter, Erica Wright, said in a statement, as per The Los Angeles Times. “Nothing could keep him from Compton. Nothing could keep his parents from Compton. This will forever be a highlight in my life.”

Eazy-E’s son, Eric Darnell Wright Jr. added, “The street naming serves as a symbol of recognition and commemoration, ensuring that our father […] has a legacy that will be remembered and celebrated for generations to come.”

This is far from the first preservation of Eazy-E’s legacy. In March 2017, for example, N.W.A.’s Straight Outta Compton was selected for preservation in the National Recording Registry in the Library of Congress.

Eazy-E Honored With His Own Compton Street

In a tribute to the late N.W.A legend and Ruthless Records founder Eazy-E, the city of Compton is set to immortalize his legacy by naming a street in his honor. Auto Plaza Drive South will officially bear the name “Eazy Street.” This is the same California city where Eazy-E was born and raised. Moreover, Eazy-E’s enduring influence on the world of hip-hop and music as a whole has not gone unnoticed. And the decision to rename a street after him holds great significance. Especially during the 50th anniversary of hip-hop. However, his pioneering work with N.W.A and the establishment of Ruthless Records contributed significantly to shaping the genre and paving the way for numerous artists.

The renaming of Auto Plaza Drive South as “Eazy Street” comes as part of the city’s commemorative events to mark the 50th anniversary of hip-hop. This adds an extra layer of significance to the occasion. Eazy-E’s son, Lil Eazy-E, shared his thoughts on the honor to AllHipHop. He expressed “To hear our father Eric ‘Eazy-E’ Wright is being honored during the 50th anniversary of Hip-Hop, it’s a testament to his impact and legacy in the genre. His contributions to Hip-Hop music and the entertainment business and culture continue to be recognized and celebrated. And we are truly grateful. We will continue to make sure our father’s charitable contributions will continue to be our goal thru our nonprofit, the Eric Wright Foundation. We truly appreciate the honor.”

The commemorative event celebrating the street name change is scheduled for November 22. And the event will run from noon to 3 p.m. PT. Importantly, it is open to the public. This offers fans of Eazy-E the opportunity to join in celebrating his life and contributions in the world of hip-hop. Eazy-E’s mark on the genre continues to resonate with fans worldwide.

Moreover, this street naming is a fitting acknowledgment of his enduring legacy. However, as Compton pays homage to one of its most illustrious sons, it highlights the city’s commitment to honoring its cultural heritage. In addition to recognizing the profound impact of its residents on the music industry. However, Eazy Street is not just a name on a sign. In addition, it’s a symbol of the enduring influence of an artist whose music and legacy will forever be a part of hip-hop history.

Happy Heavenly Birthday To N.W.A./Ruthless Records Founder Eazy-E!

external content

Despite the fact that the Hip Hop community lost this giant in the game over two decades ago, the legacy of Eazy-E will always be seen, heard and celebrated by the culture of Hip Hop.

Eazy-E was born Eric Lynn Wright on this date in 1964 in Compton, California. As most of his gang-infested Compton neighborhood, Eazy adopted the street life and began a career in selling drugs in the early 80s. Wright earned as much as $250K selling drugs, but quickly reinvested his street profits into the music business, thus starting Ruthless Records.

Not long after, Eazy linked up with O’Shea “Ice Cube” Jackson, Andre “Dr. Dre” Young and Lorenzo “MC Ren” Paterson and founded “the world’s most dangerous group”, N.W.A. This multi-platinum, Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame group catapulted Eazy’s status to the “godfather of gangster rap”.

Even though the world said goodbye to Eazy in 1995 after his short battle with AIDS, his musical genius continues to live on and influence future generations of Hip Hoppers.

Happy born day Eazy! #RIPEazyE
