Here Are 10 More Artists Who Could Have Been 2024 ‘XXL’ Freshmen

XXL announced its 2024 Freshman class today including standouts like Hunxho, Lay Bankz, Maiya The Don, That Mexican OT, and more. They’re all future stars in the making, but here are 10 more rappers who shouldn’t be overlooked.

310Babii

The Southern California rapper’s breakout single “Soak City” continues to gain momentum, but besides that, he just received the biggest co-sign someone from his city can get: Performing at Kendrick Lamar’s Juneteenth Pop Out concert as a special guest of Mustard.

Anycia

Thanks to Latto teaming up with her on “Back Outside” and the release of her mixtape Princess Pop That, Anycia’s star is on the rise. We’ve also got a collab with JID to look forward to.

Connie Diiamond

While the Bronx native is far from a “Freshman” in the sense of “just starting out” as she kicked off her career at just 14 years old, she’s started to gain more traction in recent years, particularly with her song “Ghetto & Ratchet.”

Flyana Boss

You either love them or hate them (and if it’s the latter, keep it to yourself, please, for your own good), but you know them and you’ve definitely seen them sprinting through just about every notable building in LA. 2023 was a standout year for the Dallas/Detroit duo, and with their debut album still in the works, they certainly have another one coming down the pike.

Gloss Up

Her buddy GloRilla was already featured in the coveted roundup, so why not join her and collaborator Sexyy Red in glowing up via the XXL Freshman list? With underground hits like “Come Here” and “Ride Home” she’s more than qualified.

Karrahbooo

Another Atlanta standout with a big-name co-sign, Karrahbooo is the clear star of Lil Yachty’s Concrete Boys clique, but was already building a steady buzz even before she was officially signed to his label.

Kenny Mason

Kenny got plenty of attention in 2022 when he and J. Cole teamed up on Dreamville‘s compilation cut “Stick” and JID’s “Dance Now,” and since then, his string of solid EPs, 3, 6, and Highway 9 have firmly established him as a talent to watch.

Ray Vaughn

The future of Top Dawg Entertainment might have seemed precarious with the departure of Kendrick Lamar and Reason, but Long Beach native Ray Vaughn’s nonstop stream of hard-hitting singles have shown he’s got the talent and the motivation to put the West Coast label on his back.

Remble

If it seems like there might be a bit of a Los Angeles bias here… Duh. You think a Compton native wouldn’t try to counterbalance the Northeast bias exhibited by the music journalism business for the past six decades? Anyway, Remble has the most unique and charismatic flow to crop up in years, he’s had the big-name co-signs to boost his momentum, and he was also featured in Kendrick’s Ken & Friends show, exposing him to a national audience.

Teezo Touchdown

Yes, he’s a little beyond the strictest definition of a “Freshman,” but that’s never stopped XXL from including an artist on their storied annual feature, so hey, I’m putting him in mine. If he’s not still in the “making” phase of stardom, there’s still plenty of room between him and his ceiling.

Tyler The Creator’s Camp Flog Gnaw Revealed The Dates And Location For Its 10-Year Showcase

For going on ten years, Tyler The Creator’s Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival has been the premiere festival in Los Angeles — if not the entire United States. And this year, Tyler plans on making his festival the biggest and best one yet to celebrate its tenth anniversary. Kicking off in September 2012, the festival had to be postponed in 2020 and 2021, but returned in 2023, with Tyler remarking during his headlining set how proud he was that he was able to reboot the festival in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic (and calling out fans for booing Drake at the last one, something they could probably get away with at this point).

Camp Flog Gnaw returns on November 16th & 17th, once again at Dodger Stadium in Los Angles; tickets go on sale beginning Friday, June 28th, with advance ticket sales beginning Thursday, June 27th.

General admission to both Saturday and Sunday will be $345 + fees, while VIP passes will be $625 + fees. Super VIP passes are $1,695 + fees. You can register for passes and find more info at CampFlogGnaw.com. The lineup will be announced at a later date, but could include anything from hip-hop to K-pop based on prior year’s rosters. Last year, the festival was headlined by SZA and Kendrick Lamar and Baby Keem as The Hillbillies, with performances from Kali Uchis, Fuerza Regida, Willow, Ice Spice, Teezo Touchdown, and more.

Taylor Swift Is Still ‘Cracking Up/Swooning’ Over Travis Kelce’s Eras Tour Debut

Travis Kelce is no stranger to a big stage, as the star tight end for the Kansas City Chiefs has played in four Super Bowls and won three of them. He’s usually doing the thing he does best when tens of thousands of people are watching him live (and millions more on TV), but on Sunday night in London he took a bit of a step outside his normal comfort zone in support of his girlfriend.

At Taylor Swift’s third night of The Eras Tour in London, Kelce made his on-stage debut, joining two of Swift’s dancers for a song transition before “I Can Do It With A Broken Heart,” carrying Swift to a broken heart-shaped couch. Unsurprisingly, when the camera zoomed in to show it was Kelce dressed as one of the dancers, the crowd went wild, and he seemed to have the time of his life on stage.

After the show, Swift posted to Instagram to thank all the special guests from that evening, including Gracie Abrams who debuted a new song with Swift, and that included Travis who had Taylor “cracking up/swooning” over his performance.

Wembley Stadium round one was so surreal. Looking out into crowds of 90,000 fans each night and hearing that VOLUME… Those were some of the loudest crowds I’ve ever heard. Acoustic sections went OFF. I got to sing ‘Castles Crumbling’ with @yelyahwilliams for the first time – hadn’t performed with her since 2011 and man my heart was just so full of love for her and our friendship. Then the impossibly gifted and wonderful @gracieabrams came and surprised the crowd with the first performance of our song ‘us.’ And I’m still cracking up/swooning over @killatrav’s Eras Tour debut 🥰 Never going to forget these shows. Can’t wait to do it 5 more times in August. Up next: Dublin!! 🇮🇪

We’ll see if Kelce pops up on stage again before the Chiefs start training camp, or if this was just a one-time appearance, and maybe Travis can work on finding a way to get Taylor on the field with the Chiefs at some point.

Angel Reese Divides Fans After Being Spotted With G Herbo

Angel Reese was spotted riding in a car with G Herbo in Chicago over the weekend after she and the Sky defeated the Indiana Fever 88-87. Neither Reese nor Herbo has confirmed it’s actually them in a video circulating online, but nevertheless, fans have been running with the idea on social media. The video itself was taken by a fan in the next car over on the road and features the caption: “Chicago things.”

When The Shade Room shared the clip on Instagram, one user wrote: “Women who comfortable with going or with men who are in relationships I will always give a side eye too cause girl you know he has a family.” Another added: “Angel is probably just cool with him. There’s no way she would be at the top of her game trying to be with a man with 4 kids and 2bms!”

It makes sense Reese would want to celebrate Sunday’s win over her rival Caitlin Clark. “This is what I do: I come out and perform,” Reese told reporters after the game. “I do what it takes to win every single day.” She finished the game with 25 points and 16 rebounds, making for arguably the best performance of her young career. The Sky drafted Reese, earlier this year, after she led LSU to the Elite Eight of the 2024 NCAA Tournament.

XXL’s 2024 Freshman Class Includes Lay Bankz, Maiya The Don, And More

The most anticipated preview of hip-hop to come has arrived. The XXL Freshman Class is an annual tradition that lets hip-hop fans get a look at the year’s fastest-rising stars.

This year’s list includes Dallas rapper BigXThaPlug, Tallahasee, Florida rapper Bossman Dlow, New York rapper Cash Cobain, Atlanta rapper Hunxho, Philadelphia rapper Lay Bankz, New York rapper Maiya The Don, Boston rapper Rich Amiri, New York rapper ScarLip, Texas rapper That Mexican OT, and the mysterious crooner 4Batz.

Prior lists have included Kendrick Lamar, J. Cole, Latto, Megan Thee Stallion, and more, so it’s usually a pretty good indicator of how artists’ careers are playing out — and at least one name on the cover is almost guaranteed to become a superstar. See below for a breakdown of each rapper’s breakout moment.

BigXThaPlug

BigXThaPlug hails from Dallas and his big hits so far are “Mmhmm” and “Texas.”

Bossman Dlow

His breakout single “Get In With Me” went viral on TikTok earlier this year, precipitating a No. 20 debut for his new tape, Mr Beat The Road.

Cash Cobain

Known for his “Slizzy” approach to the traditional New York sound, Cash’s biggest looks came from “Fisherrr” and his J. Cole collab, “Grippy.”

Hunxho

Hunxho’s rise has been steady since 2021, with “Let’s Get It”; he’s since released a string of solid mixtapes including 2023’s For Her, which peaked at No. 83 on the Billboard 200.

Lay Bankz

A string of viral TikTok hits culminated this year with “Tell Ur Girlfriend” and After 7 her major-label debut project.

Maiya The Don

In October 2022, Maiya dropped “Telfy” garnering about as much popularity as the titular bag. She’s since supported Flo Milli on tour after appearing on the Montgomery rapper’s “Conceited” remix, and even teamed up with the New York Liberty.

Rich Amiri

“One Call,” was just the latest song to jump from TikTok to the Hot 100 in February.

ScarLip

You’ve likely heard “Glizzy Gobbler,” Scar’s 2022 hit viral hit; if not, you may have seen her featured alongside some of the biggest names in hardcore hip-hop, including Swizz Beatz, Jadakiss, and Benny the Butcher, Snoop Dogg, and more.

That Mexican OT

Best known for his 2023 single “Johnny Dang,” That Mexican OT is probably the breakout star of this year’s Freshman class. His albums, Lonestar Luchador and Texas Technician, have both been critical and commercial successes, and he’s bringing back the Houston sound.

4Batz

“Act II: Date @ 8” became an out-of-nowhere hit early this year, garnering the timely co-sign of Drake just before he took a shot at Kendrick Lamar and had the whole rap world turn against him. It doesn’t look like the blowback has landed on 4Batz, though; he seems to be doing great in comparison.

Ty Dolla Sign Teases A New Sound For His Next Kanye West Collaboration, “Vultures 2”

Ty Dolla Sign says that his next project with Kanye West, Vultures 2, is nearly complete and that fans can expect a new sound from the two as compared to their first effort together. He discussed the highly-anticipated project during an interview with Billboard published on Friday.

“We got all the songs. Basically, it’s just like, ‘How can we get it there? How can we go bigger than the first album?’” he said. From there, he alluded to an evolution of their sound together. “Certain people will probably expect you to just do the same exact sound. But that sound’s already out,” he said. The latest details come after he made a huge update on the release during Kendrick Lamar’s The Pop Out – Ken & Friends, last week. According to the NFR Podcast, he said: “The album is almost done and could be released any day now.”

Elsewhere in the interview with Billboard, he described West as “the best artist of this generation” other than himself. “I don’t give a f–k about what people were talking about,” he said. “I know my n—. He’s one of the best people I’ve ever met,” he said. As for whether he was worried about West’s antics impacting the success of their record, he added: “Just with my analysis of how it goes with him, he goes all the way to the top. And something may happen and he’ll say [something people find offensive] — and then people [get] right back, you know. Because this sh-t is undeniable.”

Ye and Ty first teamed up for the first Vultures album back in January. They plan to release an entire trilogy together. Be on the lookout for further updates on Ty Dolla Sign and Kanye West on HotNewHipHop.

XXL Freshman Class Of 2024 Includes BigXthaPlug, ScarLip, Cash Cobain & More

It’s time to find out who part of the hip-hop industry thinks will lead the genre into the future (however controversially), as XXL‘s Freshman Class of 2024 is here. Moreover, for those unaware, the publication does a yearly round-up of the hottest new names in rap right now, whether they’re just getting started, are getting long-overdue recognition, or already rose to the art form’s upper echelons. We won’t tease it any further: this year’s picks are 4batz, Hunxho, Scar Lip, Rich Amiri, BigXthaPlug, Cash Cobain, Maiya The Don, Skilla Baby, That Mexican OT, Lay Bankz, and Bossman Dlow. Southside will provide the beats. Folks are very excited to see what they bring to the freestyles and cyphers, and we’re sure that will be a pretty cool content farm to witness.

Furthermore, many of these artists have big 2024 hits, or are following up on a breakout 2023. In addition, many MCs here have been putting in work for far longer, and it’s great to see this deserved, albeit late praise. That’s always part of the contradiction and tough balance that a XXL Freshman Class strives to achieve, and no list is perfect. After all, folks may remember how Ice Spice joined the rank of musicians that turned down the cover opportunity, so the stars don’t always align.

XXL‘s Freshman Class Of 2024

However, we also want to take this time to point fans to other initiatives by XXL to showcase talent beyond this Freshman Class rollout. For example, the publication hosted an all-femcee cypher boasting fiery verses from Latto, Flo Milli, Monaleo, new freshwoman Maiya The Don, and Mello Buckzz. It was a great moment to witness, and one that they might want to indulge in further since the Freshman Classes haven’t garnered as much hype as they used to. Maybe more cyphers and freestyle showcases could revive some of that hype and set better standards.

All that aside, we all know how infamously some XXL Freshman Class moments live on within Internet circles. In fact, Steve Lacy proved this very recently with his comical reimagining of Ty Dolla $ign’s Freshman freestyle. If this new group of MCs don’t all stun lyrically in 2024, then fans at least expect some fun moments and viral showcases to assess the state of the art form this year. While hip-hop is much bigger than any one group of newcomers, it’s nonetheless very exciting to focus on the new guard and witness what could be historic benchmarks.
