Lauryn Hill Postpones “Miseducation” Tour Amid “Serious Vocal Strain”

Lauryn Hill has postponed the rest of her tour celebrating the 25th anniversary of The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill while dealing with “serious vocal strain.” She explained the decision in a lengthy statement on Instagram, early Wednesday. After thanking fans for their continued support throughout the tour thus far, she explained why she can’t continue until 2024.

“As many of you may know, I’ve been battling serious vocal strain for the past month,” she wrote. “I made it through each show by taking prescribed prednisone, but this can be detrimental to the body when taken in large amounts over long periods of time. In order to prevent any long term negative affect on my voice and my body, I need to take time off to allow for real vocal recovery so that I can discontinue the medication completely.”

Hill continued: “For this reason we have to reschedule most of the remaining shows this year. The shows that were canceled this year will be rescheduled for early 2024 AND because of the overwhelming response, we’ll be adding new cities to the tour, including overseas. We’re working on the new calendar now, and announcing soon.” Despite the postponement, Hill says she and the Fugees will still go forward with their show in Philadelphia, this weekend. Drake Announces “Scary Hours 3” Instrumentals, Challenges Other Artists To Rap Over Them

Last week, Drake returned from his surprisingly short “hiatus” from dropping new music. He did so to surprise drop his new Scary Hours 3 EP which added six new songs to his For All The Dogs album from last month. Drake himself spends much of the time on the songs dissing other artists and media figures. He takes shots at familiar foes like Pusha T and Joe Budden while also making some more surprising callouts aimed at Kanye West and 6ix9ine.

Now, Drake is offering other artists the chance to show off their own abilities over his instrumentals. He took to Instagram to announce that versions of the songs with no vocals were coming out soon and issued a challenge to other artists to try their hand at the songs. “Dropping the instrumentals this week I wanna hear who’s barring up” Drizzy captioned his Instagram announcement. It’s unclear when exactly the instrumental will arrive but when it does he’s clearly expecting to hear some talented artists to record their own versions of them. Check out the full announcement below.

Drake Wants To Hear Who’s “Barring Up”

The new songs from Scary Hours 3 being attached to the end of For All The Dogs will give the album a chance to return to the top spot on the Billboard 200. It’s expected to land somewhere in the 110k-130k range on next week’s chart. The album’s primary competitor for the top spot is, surprisingly, Dolly Parton’s collaboration-packed new album Rockstar. Parton is seeking her first ever number one album on the Billboard 200.

One of Drake’s biggest critics has been pretty quiet on Scary Hours 3. After being pretty vocal in his critiques of For All The Dogs, Joe Budden simply responded with “I have absolutely nothing to say” when asked about Scary Hours. What do you think of Drake sharing the instrumentals from his new EP and challenging other artists to rap over them? Who do you want to hear over songs from the project? Let us know in the comment section below.

7 Of The Best ’00s R&B Groups

By the 2000s, R&B groups began to dwindle, failing to achieve the incomparable heights of the 80s and 90s, while solo acts began to prosper. Nonetheless, there were many impressive acts that earned significant attention during their run. Also, a few popular R&B groups like Destiny’s Child crossed over into the 00s and still dominated the scene. With the current resurgence of R&B groups, many fans have been looking to the genre’s roots. These are seven of the best R&B groups of the 00s.

Destiny’s Child

No list of R&B acts from the 90s and 00s can exist without mentioning Destiny’s Child. Their final and most popular lineup included Beyonce Knowles, Kelly Rowland, and Michelle Williams. However, past members, LeToya Luckett and LaTavia Robertson, remain beloved by fans and contributed to the group’s early success. Furthermore, at the peak of their fame in the late 90s/early 2000s, Destiny’s Child was responsible for several hits, including, “Say My Name,” “Bootylicious,” “Lose My Breath,” and more. The iconic group also received fourteen Grammy nominations throughout their career, winning three.

Danity Kane

Danity Kane was signed to Diddy’s Bad Boy Records after being formed on MTV’s Making the Band. They were the first female group to have their first two albums debut at the top of the Billboard charts and sold a million copies of their first album domestically. Despite a heap of internal tensions, which caused them to disband after a few years, Danity Kane left their mark on pop and R&B with songs like ”Damaged” and ”Showstopper.”

Blue

Blue is an English quartet that was formed in 2000 after two of its members, Lee Ryan and Antony Costa, were chosen for a group by Simon Cowell. That group ultimately failed to reach widespread success.

One of their first singles, ”Too Close,” peaked at number one on the UK Singles Chart. Furthermore, their first three albums were all chart-toppers. While English bands stuck to the Britpop formula, Blue brought a refreshing sound by infusing their music with a healthy dose of R&B alive in the first half of the 00s.

Pretty Ricky

The rapping duo, Diamond and Spectacular Smith, formed Pretty Ricky, with Corey Mathis as a third rapper, and Marcus Cooper providing the vocals. Their first two albums were certified Gold, while their best-known single, ”Grind With Me,” went platinum. Towards the end of the 00s, their lead vocalist, Pleasure P departed, marking the beginning of the end for the R&B and Hip Hop group.

Floetry

English R&B duo Floetry made waves in the late 90s and early 00s with their poetic lyrics and soothing voices. Comprising Marsha Ambrosius and Natalie Stewart, Floetry began by adding spoken word poetry to musical pieces. They soon realized they could move people with their talents and formed a group. They found success after moving to the US, where they wrote for other artists and began releasing their music. Their singles “Floetic” and “Say Yes” earned them four Grammy nominations. Their fifth nod was for their hit single “Supastar” off their second studio album, Flo’Ology

B2K

Boys of the New Millenium, shortened to B2K, comprised of Omarion, Raz-B, J-Boog, and Lil’ Fizz. The group’s self-titled debut album was an instant hit, placing them on the Billboard 200 chart’s second spot. They also dipped their toes in the film industry, starring in You Got Served. Overall, they won three BET awards in their career and received multiple nominations for others.

3LW

3 Lil’ Women, aka 3LW, were a trio of talented young girls. The R&B girl group rose to fame in the 00s, releasing three albums, including their eponymous debut. The three members of the group, Adrienne Bailon, Naturi Naughton, and Kiely Williams eventually achieved success even after the group’s disbandment. 3LW is best known for their hit singles, “No More (Baby I’ma Do Right),” and “Playas Gon’ Play.”

Tyeler Reign, the winner of The Rap Game’s final season, has put out a fair amount of music since the show ended four years ago. Her discography consists mostly of singles, and her only project, The End, was released in 2021. Tyeler Reign’s most streamed song on Spotify is another single from 2021, “I Promise.” With over 150k streams, the song features braggadocious lyrics over trap drums. The rapper has also been in other reality TV shows such as FTS Kids Radio Show

Eli Triplett

Eli Triplett has not put out a lot of music on streaming platforms since he left The Rap Game in 2019. She currently has close to 100k followers on Instagram, and her two singles, “Summary” and “Damn Wave,” have thousands of streams on Spotify.

Sire

Sire was a fan-favorite on season 5 of The Rap Game. As a result, there was plenty of pushback online when Jermaine Dupri chose Tyeler Reign as the winner of the season. Still, Sire has since maintained that he holds no animosity towards Jermaine Dupri, and is grateful for the opportunity The Rap Game afforded him. Today, Sire mostly uploads his music on Instagram in the form of snippets and freestyles. He also uses social media to keep in touch with his growing fanbase.

Lil Richye (Richye Meshawn Porter Jr)

Lil Richye shared with Parle Mag that he didn’t actually have a great time on The Rap Game. He attributed this to having “just turned 13 and didn’t understand that TV was different from reality.” Initially, he was part of a group called PB3, along with his brothers. However, since leaving The Rap Game in 2019, he has released multiple solo singles and an album titled 30Four30 Memory Loss, Pt. 1. Lil Richye regularly keeps his fans updated about his latest music on his Instagram page. He also still liaises with his two younger brothers, who have continued the PB3 group without him.

50 Cent and Ed Sheeran have collaborated off the stage as well in previous years. Back in 2019, they made the song “Remember the Name” with Eminem. After its release, Sheeran spoke about his relationship with the two rappers on Hot Ones. “If you were to go into my school and go, at the height of Shady Records, at the height of Aftermath [Entertainment], and go, ‘Which one of these kids is gonna do a song with Eminem and 50 Cent?’ No one would’ve guessed me,” Sheeran joked at the time. “50 will probably disagree with this, [but] I don’t think 50 had a fucking clue who I was. I think afterward he was like, ‘Oh, the ‘Shape of You’ guy!’” Check out his appearance on The Final Lap tour below.

‘Rap Sh!t’ Season 2 Delivers Another Standout Soundtrack

rap sh!t season 2 interview

Issa Rae’s City Girls-inspired musical dramedy, Rap Sh!t, has returned for a second season of Miami-based indie rap shenanigans on Max. With its return comes another season soundtrack packed with the underground hip-hop and R&B talent that makes the show’s tale of a burgeoning buddy rap duo sing.

As with Rae’s prior hit show, Insecure, the soundtrack not only lends the narrative its authenticity but also propels the story forward as songs written for its stars Mia and Shawna (portrayed by Kamillion and Aida Osman, respectively) reflect their struggles and triumphs, while songs inspired by show’s events set the tone for their quest through Miami’s nightlife in search of their big break.

While the last season’s soundtrack highlighted songs from rising rap stars like Dreezy, Jean Deaux, Tokyo Jetz, and more, this season brings even more emerging voices to the foreground, like Cam & China, Connie Diiamond, and Guapdad 4000 (and many, many more, including breakout sensation Sexyy Red). They, along with Raedio VP Sarah Bromberg and the label’s General Manager Xtina Prince, gave Uproxx some insight into how the show highlights the future of music — and how the music makes the show another Issa Rae hit in its own right.

What is the core theme of this season narratively and how does the soundtrack/song tie into that theme?

Sarah Bromberg – Raedio VP, Music Supervision & Library: The season taps into the artist’s struggle to succeed and all of the outside factors that can influence a breaking artist when they are on that journey to become established. In creating music for the show, especially for the soundtrack, we brought in both artists that have reached that established place and those that are still on the journey there. In that way, some of the pairings on the soundtrack are almost a reflection of the story told this season.

Xtina Prince – Raedio General Manager: This season is full of drama. Drama with family, Drama with ego, Drama with competition, Drama in relationships. This season was hard. It has light and funny moments that create a balance but it is definitely serious. Records like “He Can’t Reach,” that talk about moving on from a relationship with your pride and self-respect and the airy and sinister production on tracks like “On Site” and “Want No Beef” were the perfect backdrops to the moments of intensity and struggle reflected in this season.

What are the challenges and advantages of writing/producing a song intended for television/narrative rather than radio/playlist/stage?

Connie Diiamond: When it comes to television there’s usually a narrative/topic they need you to stick to. When I’m creating dolo, I can do and say what I want. Overall it’s still a great experience and it pushes me to be greater than what I already am.

Cam & China: One of the challenges we come across is writing lyrics outside of ourselves as artists and seeing things in perspectives within the task we have at hand without sounding cheesy. Since we own being authentic artists ourselves, we take pride in spilling that into everything we do no matter the circumstances.

With that being said, one of the great advantages of writing for anything/anyone outside of ourselves is creating our own imaginary character and putting our all into assuring it feels real and loving what we’ve accomplished and sometimes wanting it for ourselves lol. We appreciate these tasks because not only do they challenge us, but they also better us as artists.

Guapdad 4000: They often don’t use the whole song; it’s very specific so each section needs to completely articulate the energy or mood of the scene. This, of course, contrasts with making something for radio, or the playlist, or stage, because there are a lot less controlled elements. Both are challenging and fun to me either way.

Which Rap Sh!t character do you relate to the most and how are you alike/different from them?

Cam & China: We relate to Shawna the most. We know how it feels for your family to resent you for rapping and having a lot to lose. We also know how it feels to get turned down or humiliated for standing up for yourself and calling out people’s bluffs, especially the ones in higher power that people try to overlook because of it. We also relate to how driven she is for her career and how she likes to play the back.

Guapdad 4000: Some days I am Shawna standing on my feelings, some days I am Mia trying to stand on business, so I switch off as they make mistakes and develop. Fortunately, I am pretty much never Reina Reign.

Connie Diiamond: Definitely KaMillion, that’s my girl on and off camera. I resonate more with her because I know her struggle in real life. It’s very similar to the script. Just a creative tryna make it. I love her, I love the show, and I love Issa Rae for shining the light on the girlies.

The show is oddly true to life in how it depicts the music industry. Which of your own experiences would make a good episode?

Guapdad 4000: Oh nothing much in my life to write an episode about. I’ve only dealt with small things such as poverty, traumatic brushes with death and jail, tragic losses of houses and loved ones, severe combination type ADHD — that might actually be autism — manic episodes followed by my famous season-long mental breakdowns, and not to mention my career working backwards and the constant battle that is being an independent artist. So you know… I clearly don’t have much to talk about.

Connie Diiamond: My experience would be the entire signing process for me. From creating a freestyle, going viral, & then having the CEO of a major label having an interest in signing me. I think that’s every artist’s dream. To genuinely make a statement and then being rewarded with the recognition of a major label.

Cam & China: Being told what to look like, what sells, and what to wear to be successful, or how we should dumb it down and rap sexier, all while taking away from our authentic self and ignoring what we can do with music. People hear music differently once they see what you look like but if you have an ear for talent, or just a dope ass artist all around and relatable? Nothing else matters.

Rap Sh!t season 2 is now streaming on Max. Rap Sh!t: The Mixtape (From The Max Original Series, S2) is out now via Raedio, LLC and Def Jam Recordings.

7 Hip-Hop & R&B Albums To Welcome The Winter

Some albums are best enjoyed during winter. The season is always a great time to cozy up and listen to some of the softer sounds out there. Likewise, certain kinds of Hip Hop and R&B projects perfectly fit winter’s aura as well. With Thanksgiving just around the corner, the air is slowly, but surely turning chilly. Alas, winter is almost here, and we have selected a handful of albums to help kickstart the warmth. These albums somehow feel like winter, even though they were likely made without the season in mind.

808s & Heartbreak Kanye West

Released in 2008, 808s & Heartbreak marked a departure from West’s earlier works, embracing a more introspective and experimental direction. Additionally, it transcended the boundaries of conventional Hip Hop, ushering in a new era of sound and emotional vulnerability. As winter slowly creeps in, 808s & Heartbreak is one of the best albums appropriate for the cooler weather. Accordingly, it can serve as a poignant soundtrack for the season. After all, it excellently captures the essence of solitude, heartache, and the cold beauty that winter often brings. Throughout the album, the rapper’s tender side shines through. Furthermore, tracks like “Street Lights,” “Say You Will,” and “Coldest Winter” highlight the overall melancholic feel of the album.

How I Got Over The Roots

The Roots’ critically acclaimed ninth album, How I Got Over is the perfect musical companion for the chill season. Released in 2010, it is a sonic journey that explores themes of resilience, self-discovery, and the collective human experience. In addition, it deeply resonates with the reflective and contemplative mood of winter weather. The album opens with “A Peace Of Light,” an instrumental track that sets the tone with its atmospheric sounds. By and large, its gentle progression creates a serene backdrop for the emotional journey that unfolds. Subsequently, the title track follows with a blend of soulful vocals and introspective rap bars. The Gospel-infused “Dear God 2.0” is a standout track that combines poetic lyricism with spiritual contemplation. From Hip Hop to soul and jazz influences, How I Got Over has it all. In conclusion, it’s certainly one of the albums you should be spinning this winter.

CautionMariah Carey

Almost three decades after her debut, and the incomparable Songbird Supreme, Mariah Carey, proved she still had the chops to hang with the new flock of R&B stars. With Caution, her acclaimed 2018 album, she delivered a sophisticated, warm, and glittery masterclass in R&B. It’s also arguably her most cohesive project yet, as each song smoothly blends into the other. This winter season, it’s easily one of the most intimate albums to keep you feeling nice and warm. Mariah Carey is soulful and tender all through, but songs like “GTFO,” “With You,” and “One Mo’ Gen” give Caution an extra, chill kick.

My Name Is My Name Pusha T

A gritty and lyrically dense album, My Name Is My Name aligns well with the stark and cold aesthetic of winter. The album showcases Pusha T’s intricate storytelling, streetwise narratives, and knack for vivid imagery. Although it is the rapper’s debut album, he’s no rookie, and he declares it on the album’s opener, “King Push.” Likewise, tracks like “Nosetalgia” ft. Kendrick Lamar, “40 Acres” ft. The-Dream, and “Numbers On The Board” stand out. My Name Is My Name falls under albums that resonate with the raw and unyielding aspects of winter. As 2023 draws to a close, allow it to weave through the season’s chill with its raw beats and unapologetic lyricism.

Read More: Origins: Pusha T’s “My Name Is My Name”

A Seat At The Table – Solange

Arguably her best album yet, A Seat At The Table was released as Solange’s third studio album. This tranquil R&B masterpiece is certainly one of the albums that should get you through winter. Littered with entrancing songs delivered in Solange’s sultry voice, it is the perfect winter companion. For example, the Grammy Award-winning single “Cranes In The Sky” is a sonic meditation that evokes a sense of calm. Likewise, tracks like “Don’t Touch My Hair” and “F.U.B.U.” are groovy sonic relaxants. Now, more than any other time this year, you should be giving A Seat At The Table multiple spins.

CTRL – SZA

Before SZA dominated 2023 with SOS, she released her equally critically acclaimed debut album in 2017. The album is a soulful and emotionally charged R&B offering that will get you through the coldest nights. Specifically, Ctrl is a powerful exploration of love, self-discovery, and the complexities of relationships. Particularly for the emotionally expressive, this album, with its raw and confessional lyrics, will be a musical essential this season. Featuring tracks like “Drew Barrymore,” “The Weekend,” and “Garden (Say It Like Dat),” how could it not be? Among the albums that will be curated to get you through winter, Ctrl should certainly make the cut.

Take Care Drake

Even after dropping multiple projects since its release twelve years ago, Take Care remains one of Drake’s most beloved albums. The album is a fusion of Hip Hop and R&B that showcases Drake’s signature introspective lyricism and melodic delivery. Without a doubt, this should be one of the albums you listen to this winter. Its production, lyrics, and melodies all tie together to create a beautiful musical showpiece. “Marvin’s Room” stands out as a somber exploration of love, longing, and loneliness. While it’s quite sad, you can’t deny that it’s the perfect winter soundtrack. In conclusion, this album is as winter-appropriate as they come. Surely, you should not miss out on experiencing it again this season.

Sexyy Red Is Shouting “F*** My Baby Dad” All Over A New Unreleased Song

Sexyy Red is a rapper who will always be producing something raunchy, wild, and exciting. While she is not everyone’s cup of tea, the crazy energy she pours into her music is something to respect. However, as she has gotten more and more popular, especially at the rate she has, a lot of eyeballs are watching. Just yesterday, it was reported that she had some choice words for a ballet instructor. The teacher went viral on TikTok for voicing her frustrations about her students who have been blatantly disrespecting her. The 22-year-old also called out Sexyy Red for her poor influence on the five-year-old kids.

The St. Louis rapper told her f*** off, essentially and urged her to continue to play her music. It was not the best look for someone who clearly has an impression on a lot of the younger generation of girls. However, it does not seem she will change her ways, especially after how this type of music got her to where she is now. To her credit, though, Red did appear to have some sympathy saying she would be open to making Kidz Bop-like songs. That might need to be on the backburner for now because she has a deluxe album on the way soon.

Hood Hottest Princess features her biggest hits and Sexyy has been teasing an expanded edition for a bit now. She is back with another preview, with this one being shared on her Instagram. Her signature formula is on full display once again and she has some words for someone in her life. There is no confirmation of this, but appears that this track is going to be titled “F*** My Baby Dad.” Those words are all over this song and there is a chance this could be a diss track of sorts.

What are your initial thoughts on another track being previewed by Sexyy Red in which she says “F*** my baby dad?” Do you think it is a bit of a diss track, or is it just another cut of her trademark sound?
