7 Actors Who (Unsuccessfully) Attempted Music Careers

The talent pool in Hollywood is truly diverse, and as a result, many actors have dabbled in music. Many celebrities stick their feet in multiple ventures to capitalize on their fame. However, success in one industry isn’t always a guarantee that you’ll be welcomed in another. As such, many actors in Hollywood have had failed music careers. Unfortunately, not everyone can replicate the successes of say, Miley Cyrus or Idris Elba. Additionally, it’s become increasingly evident that the transition from musician to actor is much more bankable than the opposite. In any case, here are seven stars who tried (and failed) to successfully segue into music.

Vin Diesel

The Fast & Furious frontman is one of the highest-grossing actors in Hollywood. However, before becoming one of the most profitable actors, he briefly dabbled in music. In a 2021 interview on The Kelly Clarkson Show, he shared that he attempted to transition into rap from breakdancing in the mid-’80s. During his brief rap stint, he went by the name Mark Sinclair. Furthermore, Diesel (Sinclair at the time) collaborated with avant-garde composer Arthur Russel and attempted to create a rap song. An audio recording of their studio session surfaced on SoundCloud in 2011. After listening, it became evident to fans of the actor why he chose not to continue chasing a career in Hip Hop.

Tyra Banks

Tyra Banks needs no introduction. Whether from her immensely successful modeling career or her appearances in film and TV, she is a highly recognizable figure. However, not many people know that she briefly dipped a toe in musical waters back in the day. The supermodel released an R&B-dance single in 2004 titled “Shake Ya Body.” The song was very energetic, and its music video featured contestants from America’s Next Top Model. However, unfortunately for the TV personality, it didn’t stick with listeners and had a poor commercial performance.

Brie Larson

Before becoming one of the most noticeable actors in Hollywood, Brie Larson tried her hand at a music career. The A-list star and Academy Award winner was signed to Casablanca Records in 2003. In 2005, at 16, Larson released her debut and sole studio album, Finally Out of P.E. It was a 13-track pop-rock project, and unfortunately, it didn’t perform very well commercially. She never released any songs or albums after Finally Out of P.E. However, she worked as a DJ for a while before her acting career finally took off.

Tom Hardy

Earlier in his career, the Venom actor used to want to spit bars. Hardy aspired to be a rapper, and for a little while, he went by the moniker “Tommy No 1.” He spoke to BBC Newsbeat in 2011 about his unrealized career as a rapper. During the interview, Hardy shared that he started rapping at 14 or 15 and even had a record deal. “I used to be with the guy who managed Lela James and Lauryn Hill, Pras, The Fugees and all that,” he said.

However, the Mad Max actor never actualized his dream of becoming a rapper. Although he had recorded “loads of stuff,” he never put them out because, as he said, “I come from a nice, middle-class neighborhood in East Sheen, so it was a very hard sell. And, you know, I wasn’t very good.” An 18-track mixtape by Mr. Hardy was posted on Bandcamp in 2018 by producer Edward Tracy.

Mahershala Ali

Oscar-winning actor Mahershala Ali is certainly a man of many talents. Unknown to many, he was signed to a record label in the early 2000s before he achieved movie star status. Evidently, he must have shown some promise to bag a record deal in the harsh climes of the music industry. Going by the name Prince Ali, he released his debut album, Corner Ensemble, in 2006. In 2007, he followed it up with his sophomore album, Curb Side Service.

Unfortunately, neither of the two albums did well by industry standards. However, unlike many other actors, Ali’s time in the music scene wasn’t all bad, and his talents were evident. Overall, it can be argued that his music career never took off because he chose to focus on his acting career instead. Although he hasn’t released any solo songs or albums since then, Prince Ali has appeared on a few albums, including Keith Murray’s Lord of the Metaphor 2 (2019) and Ari’s Ahmed’s The Long Goodbye (2020).

Jada Pinkett Smith

Jada Pinkett Smith formed the nu metal band Wicked Wisdom in 2002 and has been their frontwoman ever since. Between 2002 and 2006, the band released two studio albums and went on several tours. However, they were never really welcomed with open arms by many metalheads. Unfortunately, this reality stunted their growth as a band, and by 2006, they went on an indefinite hiatus. Although Wicked Wisdom reunited in 2021, the band is still very much under the radar. Jada Pinkett Smith’s success as an actor is in no way comparable to that of her music career.

Naomi Campbell

In 1994, Naomi Campbell, already a supermodel, tried gliding into the music scene with Baby Woman. The 11-track R&B album received mixed reviews upon its release and performed quite terribly commercially. Unfortunately, the world did not amicably welcome Campbell’s attempt to diversify. Although it was popular in Japan, Baby Woman flopped just about everywhere else. Besides a 1996 feature on Toshinobu Kubota’s “La La La Love Song,” the supermodel hasn’t revisited the music scene since.

Jaidyn Alexis’ Music Career Is The “Fastest Growing” Blueface Has “Ever Seen”

If there’s one thing that Blueface has proven to the world throughout his come-up, it’s that he’s certainly not perfect. Still, the 26-year-old remains dedicated to securing the bag by whatever means necessary, even if it means sharing the ups and downs of his life with the world and often facing ridicule for it. Much of his toxic relationship with Chrisean Rock has been documented on Cr*zy In Love. Blue and his high school sweetheart, Jaidyn Alexis don’t have a reality series (yet), but they have been sharing more of their controversial union with fans on social media in recent months.

As Rock continues to focus on other priorities, the California-born entertainer is pouring his energy into making Alexis a superstar. They turned comments from trolls into her first single, “Stewie,” which was followed only weeks later by “Workout.” For her third release, the mother of two returned on Saturday (September 9), dropping off “Post Opp” and its accompanying visual exclusively on YouTube.

Blueface Goes Hard for Jaidyn Alexis and Her Music

Of course, not everyone is in favour of Alexis spending so much time in the studio. Regardless, her baby daddy is in full support of her making money moves, as he confirmed via Twitter on Monday. “Jaidyn has the fastest-growing music career I’ve [ever] seen,” Blue declared. “Three months [and] three songs later, sheesh 🏆.” In the replies, someone was quick to ask the MILF Music founder why his artist isn’t charting if she’s so successful. “YouTube video is currently Top 30 for music charts,” he clapped back. “Do yo homework on Jaidyn doing numbers.”

As for Blueface’s other baby mama, Chrisean Rock has been keeping busy just days after giving birth to her namesake. The “Thotiana” rapper wasn’t pleased to see her taking a two-hour trip to Virginia this past weekend, where his third-born child attended his first-ever football game. Thankfully, Rock managed to get back in her co-parents’ good graces by bringing Chrisean Jr. to church to have him formally blessed. See that heartwarming moment at the link below, and check back in later for more hip-hop/pop culture news updates.

Killer Mike Reveals 50 Cent Damaged His Early Career

Killer Mike, a beloved member of Run The Jewels, is well-known for his commitment to his solo career. His upcoming solo album, Michael, is set to be released next week. As such, he is featured as the cover star for Spin magazine. In an accompanying article written by Khari Nixon, the cost of bringing Killer Mike’s vision for Michael to life is revealed. At the beginning of the project, Cuz Lightyear, a collaborator of Killer Mike, took on the official role of A&R. For this role, he received a salary. This is typical, but what is not typical is that the rapper paid it out of his own pocket.

By the time Killer Mike enlisted No ID to transform the project from a mixtape to an album, he had already spent over a quarter of a million dollars. As the project progressed, this amount increased to over half a million dollars. Typically, such a large bill would create issues with a record label. However, at the time, Killer Mike was not signed to any label. Eventually, he struck a deal with Loma Vista Records. They are known for distributing records by artists like Denzel Curry and Action Bronson. They will now distribute Michael upon its release. Luckily, the advance from this deal reimbursed the rapper for the money he had invested in making the album.

Killer Mike Says Comparisons To 50 Cent’s Sales Hurt Him

In his interview with Spin, Killer Mike also revealed that 50 Cent may have unknowingly “damaged” his early career. However, that is simply because Mike compared his sales to 50’s sales. The two were both on a major label. However, 50 Cent far outsold Killer Mike. “My first record deal damaged me. It made me afraid, it pulled me back. I hadn’t done terribly on the major,” he said. “I just, you know, I came out the same year as 50, selling 10 million f*cking records.” Killer Mike went on to say the experience made him realize he is more comfortable with independent artists.

Recently, Killer Mike gave fans a taste of what his new solo album has to offer. He has released two singles from the album thus far. First, there was “Don’t Let The Devil” featuring El-P. Killer Mike followed that up with “Motherless” featuring Eryn Allen Kane. Furthermore, he also released videos for the tracks which conjured up imagery of summers in the rural South. The catchy production with the soul and emotional lyricism made for a strong first and second showing of the album. What do you thin

Nick Cannon Says He Won’t Ever Release Another Rap Album

Nick Cannon says that it’s unlikely he ever releases another rap album. Speaking with HipHopDX about his music career, Cannon explained that he’s never viewed himself as a “rapper.” The crux of the issue for Cannon is that he doesn’t like labels and feels they are inherently restricting.

“To define me is to confine me,” he explained to the outlet. “I never thought I was a rapper. That’s why I think I just kind of never — I wouldn’t say I didn’t take it seriously, but I was more focused on being a producer, a musician.” Cannon released his self-titled debut album back in 2003. It features collaborations with Ying Yang Twins, Biz Markie, R. Kelly, Nivea, and more.

Cannon went on to explain that he grew bored of writing raps as he became more invested in music. “I feel like even when I started I was evolving as a musician, you know, everything from production, being a piano guy, guitar, playing various instruments and stuff. I was always on that,” he explained. “Rhyming words was never that exciting to me. So when people make fun of me, I don’t care — anybody can do that. I’m not impressed by anybody who can rhyme words together. TikTok has proven anyone can do it.”

From there, Cannon clarified that he didn’t intend to downplay the skills of all hip-hop artists. “When you think about someone who really raps, you think of somebody like Symba,” Cannon clarified. “That’s an art form and it’s a young man’s game. I commend and salute all poets and storytellers. Those are the greats. But just being able to put some words together over a beat, anybody could do that. Literally, Dr. Seuss has turned us all into rappers.” Cannon is currently finishing up his Future Superstar Tour alongside Symba, 24KGoldn, Hitman Holla, and others. The final show will take place in New York on April 8 at Palladium Times Square.

Blueface & DJ Akademiks Trade Shots On Twitter

Blueface and DJ Akademiks just started some beef over Twitter, and a lot’s been said in a couple of days. Moreover, they sent shots back and forth at each other about their careers and exploits in music. Also, Blueface has been making rounds for his reality show Crazy In Love with his girlfriend Chrisean Rock. However, Ak brought music into the conversation and they fought over their careers.

It all started on Thursday (January 12) when the L.A. MC tweeted “I got way more money then ak why he playing like this.” Furthermore, just a few days prior, the former Complex host tweeted a viral video from Blueface’s show where his girlfriend struck him in the head. However, he later clarified he doesn’t actually have beef with Akademiks.

“I got no beef with ak guys I just use him for promo at this point if he tell y’all what I got going on I don’t have to say much just respond to him every once Ina while an he gone do his job for me for free…W promo,” he tweeted.

When Akademiks clapped back, he said he still supports Blueface. Still, he did tell the rapper to focus more on his music career instead of his other entertainment ventures.

“I fw and love Blueface,” the 31-year-old wrote. While he had his criticisms, he cited good intentions. “I want him not to be in abusive relationship and I don’t want his career and reputation ruined. I want him back focused on rap.”

Even though Ak’s message wasn’t entirely negative, Blueface quickly turned around and heated things up.

“Im the EP of my docu-series,” the “Bleed Em” star wrote. “Ak I’m bigger then rap I’m past rap stop tryna keep me Ina box cuz yo rap career ain’t take off.

“I son ak an let him know he a pawn on my chest board,” he continued. “Now it’s fake care an love I’m to good at the mind games, thin line between love an hate.”

Afterwards, it seems the media personality took that “son” jab seriously. Moreover, he called Blueface his son in his clapback. Also, he clowned the rapper’s head tattoos.

“Please y’all go watch my SON Blueface get knocked out on camera by his girl on her reality show… so that he can get a lil paycheck to pay his mortgage and finance that cheap ass C8. We don’t want him getting no more tattoos of JEWELERS on the side of his head,” he replied.

Then on Saturday (January 14), Blueface took aim at Ak’s music career, comparing their Spotify monthly listeners. Moreover, he made it clear that he doesn’t take his advice seriously.

“Ak please stop talking about people music career,” he asked. “Clearly you don’t have the answers you failed at rap.”

However, the most recent chapter in this saga came swiftly after, with DJ Akademiks reaffirming his support and expressed his disappointment.

“Good morning Blue. Lol just do better bruh. That’s all. I’m rooting for you,” Ak expressed. “U better than being a stand in stunt double for domestic abuse on a reality show on Zeus. Sorry if I want better for u than u want ur self. That $4.99 subscription shouldn’t have u compromising character.”

What do you think of this spout of beef between Blueface and DJ Akademiks? Moreover, where do you think it will go from here? Whatever the case, let us know in the comments down below. Also, as always, check back in with HNHH for more updates on this story.
