Megan Thee Stallion Turned Up In Her 2024 VMAs Performance Of ‘Boa,’ ‘B.A.S.,’ ‘Hiss,’ And ‘Mamushi’

In addition to hosting the 2024 MTV VMAs, Megan Thee Stallion was also booked as a performer. She absolutely killed both roles, pulling out some iconic looks from the show’s past during her hosting duties, and then burning the house down with her performance, which included hits “Boa,” “B.A.S.,” “Hiss,” and “Mamushi,” for which she was joined by guest rapper Yuki Chiba in his first US performance. The Houston hottie is also nominated for five awards, with Best Hip-Hop, Best Direction, and Best Visual Effects among them.

Meg’s had a busy 2024, dropping her new album Megan while completing her Hot Girl Summer Tour with GloRilla, during which she became one of the WNBA’s biggest supporters by bringing players like Natasha Cloud and Angel Reese on stage with her. Then, she joined Kamala Harris’ campaign, declaring that the Vice President is “for the Hotties” during a performance at one of the Presidential hopeful’s rallies.

And just when it seemed like she’d delivered all the new music she had to offer this year, she teamed up once again with BTS’s RM for another cross-cultural collaboration, “Neva Play.” Oh, and she seemingly hard-launched her relationship with NBA player Torrey Craig, so it looks like she’s having her fair share of play along with all that work.

Eminem’s 2024 VMAs Opening Performance Of ‘Houdini’ Called Back His 2000 VMA Debut

Eminem opened the 2024 MTV VMAs in nostalgic fashion, hearkening back to his first-ever VMAs performance in 2000. Back then, he was a new artist nominee and stormed the stage with dozens of duplicates to perform his then-new hit, “The Real Slim Shady.” Tonight, he did the same thing, bringing out a fleet of anachronistic fellow Slims to perform his Death Of Slim Shady cuts “Houdini” and “Somebody Save Me.” While he was not joined on stage by Jelly Roll, the Tennessee crooner did make an appearance via video screen. The performance set the tone for what to expect throughout the show, which has already included a number of references to VMAs past — perhaps to shut down skeptics who wondered why the VMAs would still be considered a big deal, 40 years later.

Eminem is one of the most nominated artists of the evening with eight nominations — which gives him plenty of opportunities to break the record for most MTV Video Music Awards won by a single act. He’s nominated for Artist Of The Year, Video Of The Year, Best Hip-Hop, Best Direction, and Best Visual Effects for “Houdini.” That debut performance of “The Real Slim Shady”/”The Way I Am” is also up for an award for VMAs Most Iconic Performance.

Eminem Is Opening The 2024 VMAs (And Looking To Break The Record For The Most Wins)

Eminem is tied for the most MTV Video Music Awards in the show’s history (bet you can’t name who he shares the honor with… it’s Peter Gabriel!). This year, he’ll not only seek to get the record all to himself, he’ll also open the show.

The “Somebody Save Me” rapper will kick off the 2024 VMAs with the first TV show performance from his 12th studio album, The Death Of Slim Shady. It’s the first time Eminem has opened the VMAs since 2010, when he performed “Not Afraid,” followed by a duet with Rihanna for “Love The Way You Lie.” No word on whether the Hawk Tuah Girl will make a cameo.

Eminem landed eight nominations this year, including Artist Of The Year and Video Of The Year, Best Hip-Hop, Best Direction, and Best Visual Effects, all for “Houdini.” He’s also up for VMAs Most Iconic Performance for his “The Real Slim Shady” / “The Way I Am” medley at the 2000 ceremony.

You can find the full list of performers at this year’s VMAs below.

Who Is Performing At The 2024 MTV VMAs?

The 2024 MTV Video Music Awards lineup is coming together.

Chappell Roan, Sabrina Carpenter, Camila Cabello, GloRilla, and Rauw Alejandro were the first announced performers for this year’s VMAs, and now they’ve been joined by a few more acts: Lisa, Halsey, Benson Boone, and Lenny Kravitz. Of those four, Boone is the only one who will be making his VMAs debut: The White Lotus star Lisa was there with Blackpink at the 2022 ceremony, while Halsey teamed up with The Chainsmokers to sing “Closer” in 2016. As for Kravitz, he hasn’t performed during the VMAs since 1998, when he accompanied Madonna on “Ray Of Light.”

Taylor Swift (who is not expected to perform despite her The Eras Tour break) leads with 10 total nominations at the 2024 VMAs, followed by Post Malone with nine; Sabrina Carpenter, Eminem, and Ariana Grande with six each; and SZA and Megan Thee Stallion with five. Katy Perry will also be presented with the Video Vanguard Award and “perform a career-spanning medley.”

You can see the full lineup (so far) below.

Sabrina Carpenter And Chappell Roan Are Performing At The 2024 MTV VMAs, Which Just Got Rescheduled

A few months ago, it was announced that the 2024 MTV VMAs were set to take place on September 10. Well, last week, it was revealed that Donald Trump and Kamala Harris had finally agreed to a presidential debate… on September 10. The VMAs would have presumably gotten the short end of that viewership conflict stick, so MTV took action.

Today (August 12), it was revealed that the VMAs will not air live from UBS Arena on September 11 at 8 p.m. ET. As Billboard notes, MTV said in a press release, “Our fans are encouraged to tune in for the 9/10 debate ahead of music’s most iconic night.”

Additionally, MTV also announced the first round of performers: Sabrina Carpenter, Chappell Roan, Camila Cabello, GloRilla, and Rauw Alejandro.

Meanwhile, the list of nominees was unveiled last week, and leading the lineup is Taylor Swift with 10 nods. Other notable nominees include Post Malone (who has nine nominations), Carpenter, Eminem, Ariana Grande (six each), SZA, and Megan Thee Stallion (five each). Fan voting for some categories is currently open until August 30, so find more information about that here.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul previously said of this year’s show, “We are excited to welcome back the MTV Video Music Awards to New York State. From its origins at Radio City Music Hall in 1984 to this September’s event at the UBS Arena, the VMAs continue to captivate millions, showcasing the very best in music video artistry. As we prepare to host this 40th anniversary event, let’s embrace the spirit of creativity and innovation that defines our state’s cultural landscape.”

The 2024 MTV VMAs are set to air live from New York’s UBS Arena on September 10 at 8 p.m. ET/PT. Before then, though, there’s one big bit of info that has just been unveiled: the nominees.

Taylor Swift leads the pack with 10 total nods (as Variety notes), while Post Malone has nine and Sabrina Carpenter, Eminem, and Ariana Grande have six each. SZA and Megan Thee Stallion also both have five apiece.

There’s fan voting for 15 categories, and that’s open now until August 30 (although Best New Artist will be open until September 10). More information on voting is available here.
