DC The Don Makes Some Bold But Accurate Proclamations On His New “REBIRTH” Album

Los Angeles, California rapper by way of Milwaukee, DC The Don, has been making waves in the underground scene for a few years. He’s slowly been building his vision and his soundscape, which is a mixture of emo rap, R&B, trap, rage, and more. With every release, it seems that the 25-year-old is becoming more detail-oriented and mature. Sure, there’s going to be some carefree and ignorant tracks going forward (there are some on his new album), but overall, he’s growing exponentially. That is something that can be said about DC The Don on REBIRTH.

He’s recognized this himself, but he’s also noticed how the listeners are picking up on it. DC talked about in his recent interview with Our Generation Music, saying, “People are starting to realize that everything I’m dropping is high quality. My fans knew that, but I think now exposure is different. I think that moment (speaking on the REBIRTH single “VENUS”) allowed people to understand that people hear from me it won’t be some bulls***.” We certainly agree with them because there really isn’t much filler whatsoever on this 18-song set. You are getting a nice mixture of atmospheres, but yet they all come across as cohesive. Without much of a doubt, this is DC’s strongest effort to date.

TisaKorean Lives Up To The Title Of New Album “In Silly We Trust”

TisaKorean doesn’t take himself too seriously. The biggest advantage he has is the willingness to attempt vocal inflections and say things that his peers wouldn’t. It’s the reason his songs go viral, and the reason that the title of his new album, In Silly We Trust, is so fitting. The eccentric rapper dishes out 12 songs in only 21 minutes, knowing good and well that his schtick would wear thin over a typically bloated rap tape. The sparseness of In Silly We Trust not only makes it easier to listen to, but it makes the material that is here all the more potent.

TisaKorean is not one for dense wordplay. He does, have a Playboi Carti-esque gift for vocal melody that makes everything he says sound catchy. It’s anybody’s guess what the rapper is saying on “IEgs In tHe aIr,” but the beat is infectious and the hook is ridiculously smooth. It’s one of the more subdued songs on the album, but its solid execution still allows it to stand out. “SiLlY SuRf,” conversely, is an absurd piece of snap rap that sounds like it was unearthed from a 2006 D4L session. TisaKorean is able to churn out borderline parody songs, and then turn out a genuinely smooth R&B cut alongside Don Toliver on “lOvE LeTtEr.” The man’s got range.

Jean Dawson Breaks Down Genre Boundaries With “Glimmer Of God”

Jean Dawson has always blurred genre lines. He broke through as a rapper, but the more confident he’s become as a songwriter, the more experimental his albums have gotten. It was difficult to imagine a tape being more sonically adventurous than 2022’s CHAOS* NOW, but Jean Dawson has done it. Glimmer of God, the artist’s fourth LP, is a mesmerizing blend of sounds from different eras and genres. The opener, “Darlin,” is a bit misleading in this regard. It’s a beautiful, funk-tinged ballad. Pretty quickly, though, Jean Dawson drops the niceties and plunges the viewer into the manic “Black Sugar.”

The song feels like a hybrid of Black Messiah-era D’Angelo and Yeezus-era Kanye West. Take our word for it, the combination of the former’s crunchy instrumentation and the latter’s manic pace miraculously coalesce into a wonderful third sound. The rest of Glimmer of God follows suit. Jean Dawson is the rare artist who can pull influence from multiple artists while still maintaining his signature sound. “Slow Heavy Ecstasy” sees the artist try his hand at Playboi Carti-style rage music, while “The Boy and the Swan” is one of the best Frank Ocean songs you’ve never heard. Dawson even croons in Spanish on the elegant ballad “Murcielago.” There’s something for everyone here.

Yeat Delivers His Most Focused Album To Date With “LYFSTYLE”

Yeat is onto something. The rapper broke out in a big way with 2093, and now he’s back with a new batch of songs in less than a year. He confirmed to The Fader that LYFESTYLE was an attempt to lean into his rap side, and now that we have the album, we can confirm this is the case. Don’t worry, the wild rage elements that made Yeat such a sensation to begin with are still here. “SPEEDBALL” and “LYING 5 FUN” are peppered with the frantic synths and Autotuned riffs thats characterized 2093. The thing that helps distinguish LYFESTYLE, though, is the way Yeat plays off his collaborators.

The title track fuses a rage style instrumental with knocking drums more akin to a trap song. This blend of sounds is complimented by Yeat and Lil Durk swapping verses. These two do not really gel on paper, but they sound fantastic together. Don Toliver also shines on “NEW HIGH.” It turns out that Toliver really sounds like his mentor, Travis Scott, when his voice is given the distorted Yeat treatment. “NEW HIGH” has one of the best grooves on the whole album. On the solo front, “SO WHAT” and “GEEK TIME” are showcases for Yeek’s wildest vocal inflections. There’s a lot of music here, and fans are going to love it.

Ovrkast. & Cardo Experiment With Their Chemistry On New EP “KAST GOT WINGS”

Ovrkast has been developing into an underappreciated star (in our opinion) for the last year and change. He’s been in the game for a minute, but he really broke through late in 2023 with his contributions to a major LP. You may know by now that we are referring to Drake’s For All The Dogs Scary Hours Edition. He laid down some beats tailored to just spit over, putting Drizzy in a truer MC mindset. It seems like he’s just been carrying the momentum from those credits into his solo catalog, again even though he’s been a more than respectable MC for some time. His latest journey has been honing in his partnership with fellow producing superstar, Cardo. He knows a thing or two about making memorable tracks for some of the game’s biggest faces. You can tell that Ovrkast was able to learn a lot from his studio sessions with Cardo, because he crafted a lot of the beats for KAST GOT WINGS.

But die hard fans, don’t worry one bit, it doesn’t take away from his rapping performances in the slightest. In fact, he really doesn’t miss the mark entirely on any of them. Some of our favorites though include “BEAT IT UP!,” a nocturnal trap banger that seems him spitting with the feeling that he wants to rip the competition’s head off. The other is “FREE UP SUMN,” which sees Ovrkast playing the role of a provider and dedicating his career to those he cares about most. There’s a spectacular beat switch up in the last quarter that just takes this track to new heights. Give Ovrkast and Cardo’s KAST GOT WINGS your time with the links below, you won’t be left wanting more.

ELUCID Gets Gritty & Real On “REVELATOR”

ELUCID may turn some casual listeners off with his new album REVELATOR due to his wordy bars and chaotic production. But for those that want to stay and here what the underground New Yorker has to say, you are going to be rewarded. This is his third studio LP and its out under Fat Possum Records. ELUCID teased it back in August with a pair of singles, “INSTANT TRANSFER” and “SLUM OF A DISREGARD.” The former features his Armand Hammer co-star billy woods, who has another feature on the 15-song set. On REVELATOR, ELUCID is presenting pressing topics that relate to oppression, racism, violence, and more. One thing that all of these issues have in common is that all require a sense urgency to quell these societal dilemmas that plague everyone.

The frenetic and industrial production across REVELATOR exudes that tenfold, as does ELUCID’s delivery. It’s loud still in the midst all of the raucous happening around him so his messages don’t get lost. It’s really a perfect balance and it’s got us thinking it’s going to be an album of the year candidate when it’s all said and done. There’s still about two and a half months left, but it’s certainly cemented in our top 10 if not top five at the moment. You owe it to yourself to hear what ELUCID has to say and offer in terms of sounds. So, check it out with the links below.

October London Pens Some Evening Love Joints For “October Nights”

South Bend, Indiana singer and songwriter is bringing one sultry R&B cut after another on his latest album, October Nights. This is actually the Death Row Records signee’s sophomore effort, and it comes just over a year after his debut, The Rebirth of Marvin. London has been doing his thing in this genre for several years now, and he’s known for his throwback sound that embodies the greats of the 90’s decade. He was able to lend his abilities to the latest NxWorries project Why Lawd? and he honestly was a perfect fit on “FromHere.”

Now, Ocotber London is bringing that tenfold on October Nights. Across this project, you are going to genuinely hear some of the most show-stopping solo performances all year. One of them is on the power ballad “Don’t Go,” as he calls out to a girl to never leave his side. The instrumentals are spacey and have that vintage tinge, and they highlight what London is able to do best. That being those captivating vocals and funky grooves. In talking with Rated R&B, London tells the publication what his goals were for this tape. “Just having fun. Nighttime is the best time for me… October Nights represents having a good time in the nighttime and letting loose.” He accomplished that and then some, so check it out below.

1oneam Drops Off Deluxe Of “One Life” With “One Death”

We are happy to welcome another newcomer to the HNHH site this weekend, as we are taking a look at 1oneam and his new tape, One Death. Not much is available on the rapper, singer, and producer, as he keeps a pretty low profile on his social media pages. He’s been in the underground trap/Pluggnb scenes for the last three years though, so this looks to be just the way he moves in general. He hails from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, which has mostly been dominated by the low-end scene. To the trained ears, you may be able to track down some references to that wave, but 1oneam seems to borrow more from his ATL counterparts.

As we said, we are listening to his new project, One Death, which boasts eight songs of truly rich soundscapes. They range from intoxicating and woozy, to ethereal and dark. He also shows off his creative side on this eight-song tape, as he incorporates random sound effects like on “Facetime” and “Alicia Keys.” On the former 1oneam samples the FaceTime ringtone and works into the whimsical chime-laced beat. Then, on the latter, he heads to the world of Minecraft and uses the door opening and closing sound effect. Even though this is a separate listening experience, it’s also not. According to Genius, this is a deluxe extension of his May album One Life. That tape was 14 tracks but similarly had no features. Give 1oneam and One Death a try with the links below to your favorite DSPs.

Zach Zoya Opts For An Alternative Soundscape On His Cheery “It’s Always Sunny In Glendale” EP

Zach Zoya is a pretty eclectic guy and doesn’t really conform to one genre and he shows that blissful ignorance on It’s Always Sunny in Glendale. This the fourth EP from the Canadian youngster, who made this project based on some experiences between Montreal and Los Angeles, as well as Glendale. In his announcement, Zoya said, “New city, new vibes, new energy, new people around me, new trials and tribulations, new ups and downs. Safe to say this past year has been a deeply challenging and formative one,” he began. “I only get to do what I do because of the team behind me, friends around, music lovers everywhere. Thank you to everyone who’s helped me make this project a reality. What a life, spent my twenties chasing sunshine🧡🧡🧡🧡.”

Clearly, this project has a lot of personal weight in his eyes, and we can hear the passion in each track. Whether he’s singing or rapping, he’s making sure to bring it 110% every time. Throughout the 17-minute listening experience, it’s definitely taking us back to those hotter months as the grooves and instrumentals embody the West Coast. You can tell that Zoya was heavily inspired by the new sights he got to witness during the making of Always Sunny in Glendale. The project arrives after a highly raved performance at Osheaga earlier in the year. So, overall, he’s definitely on a high right now and we are here for it.

Popstar Benny Recruits A Fleet Of Atlanta Femcees For His New Album “Oasis”

“Atlanta is in its female renaissance. All the girls got something to prove — that’s why they can do it better than a lot of the guys.” These are the words of Atlanta producer and curator Popstar Benny on his brand-new album, Oasis. He definitely makes a valid point there, especially in the case of this year. Outside of the Drake and Kendrick Lamar beef, they have been the biggest trending topic in hip-hop. To help put more people on to the rising female rap stars in the ATL, the veteran beatmaker (Rod Wave, Kevin Abstract, Destroy Lonely) has brought on an entire roster of them.

Names include Coco, Clair Clair, Vayda, SPOOK, Woo Da Savage, sadboi, and more. If you have heard previous beats from Benny, you know he’s not your typical trap maestro. Instead, he likes to incorporate some off-kilter sound effects. Those are all over the 18-minute-long tape and they are bolstered by some of the MC’s off-beat flows/deliveries. Princesa 28 on the grimy and alien-like “Britney Spears” is a great example of that. However, “Reverb” with Glorygirl2950 might take the cake in that regard. Overall, it’s a tape that doesn’t overstay its welcome but is memorable given how some of these songs are demo length. Adding to its weirdness is the fact this project was supposedly recorded by Benny in a treehouse Airbnb in roughly a week.
