Skilla Baby Taps Hunxho, Toosii, 4batz & More For “Crack Music 3”

Skilla Baby is continuing a mixtape series that his fanbase has vouched for time and time again. That is his Crack Music projects, and this weekend, the third installment has arrived. The Detroit rapper is bringing it back to life after two years with 16 new cuts. Features on the project include 2024 XXL Freshmans Hunxho and 4batz, Toosii, Tee Grizzley, and Peezy. The lineage of Crack Music tapes traces back to 2020, about five years after dropping some loosies. Throughout his career, he has been a fairly versatile artist. He’s able to go more pop rap and melodic. But on Crack Music 3 (and the rest of them), Skilla Baby is ditching that for more straightforward trap cuts.

The rollout began back in early October with his unexpected 4batz collab, “So Bad.” It would then end on November 8 with the braggadocious and threatening single “Jwett.” Crack Music 3 looks to cap off a strong year for Skilla Baby, who’s been on multiple star-led projects. G Herbo, Maxo Kream, the late Rich Homie Quan, DaBaby, are just a few to list. Additionally, his solo catalog has been bolstered to a great extent with The Coldest and then it’s subsequent deluxe. You can stream Crack Music 3 on your favorite streaming platforms with the links below.

J Cole Releases Classic Mixtape “The Warm Up” On Streaming

We knew it was coming. J Cole set a thrilling precedent when he dropped his debut mixtape, The Come Up, Vol. 1 on streaming platforms. The release coincided with Cole’s new podcast, in which he revisits his old material in the lead up to his final album. It didn’t take long for fans to put two and two together, and realize that The Warm Up was coming next. J Cole made good on the hype November 22. The same day Kendrick Lamar dropped his album, GNX, the Dreamville founder treated fans to his first classic release.

We’re happy to report that The Warm Up still holds up incredibly well. The evolution that J Cole makes from his first tape to this one is evident in just about every facet. His rapping is better, as evidenced by the handful of astounding freestyles. His songwriting is better, as evidenced by the signature Cole tune “Lights Please” and the underrated bonus track, “Losing My Balance.” J Cole’s production also takes a quantum leap forward. The beats for “Grown Simba” and “World Is Empty” are evocative of a talent far beyond his years. “Get Away” and “Hold It Down” remain some of the best songs in the rapper’s entire catalog. It’s a beautiful thing to see this mixtape get added to streaming, so fans can revisit it, or enjoy it for the first time.

Kendrick Lamar Casually Drops A Potential AOTY Contender With “GNX”

Kendrick Lamar… are you kidding!? The widely celebrated Compton, California visionary has just come by literally minutes ago with GNX. It’s probably the most casual release from an artist of this caliber maybe ever, but without a doubt in recent memory. About an hour ago, Lamar dropped off a one-minute teaser of a multi-phased track named after the project. That was a major shock in and of itself, but him delivering the LP just moments after is flat out insanity. Obviously, though, we mean that in the best way possible. There will be so much to unpack going forward, as there is with any Kendrick album. However, in this case, that will be true even more so. Since the beef with Drake, there were some rumblings from outsiders that K. Dot was going to release a new project.

However, no one really knew if this was going to happen. He’s already got the Super Bowl Halftime Show on his schedule. But it’s clear that Lamar wanted to capitalize on his evisceration of his Canadian foe, as well as all of the major records that came from it. “Not Like Us” and “Like That” accumulated numerous nominations at the GRAMMYs as well. There was already a serious belief that Kendrick has been the MVP of rap in 2024. But with the release of GNX there really isn’t much of a debate anymore; Kendrick Lamar is on top and will continue to be for as long as he’s around. Check out the album with the links below.

Boldy James Proves That His Tank His Never Empty On Harry Fraud Joint Tape “The Bricktionary”

Boldy James is building a foundation with a new collaborator brick by brick on his new album, The Bricktionary. This is his first joint venture with longtime and slept on icon, Harry Fraud. The Detroit and Brooklyn natives aren’t complete and total strangers to one another. They have brought their skillsets together on some spot records here and there. You could hear on songs like “Live from the Roxy,” that these two had some potential to go the distance. For the most part, they do so on The Bricktionary, which is Boldy’s fourth and Fraud’s third projects of 2024, respectively.

Leading up to its release, these prolific artists gave fans a couple of previews of what they could expect going forward. The grand and orchestral/trap-like “Cecil Fielder” with Tee Grizzley kicked things off back at the start of August. Then, last Friday, November 15, the duo would return with perhaps the most accessible of the bunch, “Shrink Wrap” featuring Babyface Ray. Across the tight, 12-song tracklist. Fraud brings some elements of trap, hardcore, and the grittiness of Detroit and the East Coast scene at large. The rapping performances from Boldy are extremely substantial as usual. However, this a snoozer or two, with “Harvey Grant” being maybe the biggest offender. But overall, The Bricktionary is a very cohesive sounding record with some enjoyable instrumentals and slick street talk from Boldy. Check it out with the links below.

Ice Cube Has An Album That “Fans Have Been Waiting On” With “Man Down”

Ice Cube is making a welcome return to hip-hop in solo form with Man Down. The project arrives six years after the release of Everythangs Corrupt, the last time we heard him by his lonesome. In 2022, he did come back but with his fellow West Coast bros Snoop Dogg, E-40, and Too $hort under their MOUNT WESTMORE alias. Overall, Cube has been more active in Hollywood, but he’s never really lost much of his aura as a cutthroat MC.

On this 11th studio album, he’s a little more chill and doesn’t have any bones to pick. But he’s still rapping very deliberately (sometimes comically too) over some funky and bouncy West Coast backdrops. The more sensual “She’s Sanctified” with his MOUNT WESTMORE posse and October London is a good example of the blending of tones. Cube said on Instagram recently that this is an album that “my fans have been waiting on,” and we can see why he thinks so. The craftsmanship of the beats to the clever rhymes are still pretty on point despite him being in the more celebratory section of his career. Man Down is a more than worthy addition to the L.A. native’s storied discography.

Nicki Minaj Treats Fans To Tenth Anniversary Edition Of “The Pinkprint”

Nicki Minaj has been enjoying the spoils of her legacy. She recently notched the highest grossing tour ever by a female rapper, as well as another Diamond certified single with “Starships.” Minaj decided to keep the good times rolling with a tenth anniversary edition of her blockbuster album The Pinkprint. It was a smash success for the rapper in 2014, and its biggest hits have aged surprisingly well. The real story with the tenth anniversary edition, though, is the bonus material. Nicki Minaj treated fans to four previously unreleased songs.

Swae Lee pops up on the bouncy “Turn Ya Cap Back.” The Rae Sremmurd star holds down the vocals while Nicki Minaj alternates between singing and rapping. “It’s Okay” is a hard turn into dancehall with David Guetta and Davido dropping by. It’s endemic of its era, for sure, but it still rings off. The beat is a top notch example of the dancehall craze that took over hip hop in the mid-2010s. The biggest story here, though, is “Arctic Tundra.” This song was leaked back in 2019, but had never seen a real release until now. Nicki Minaj and the late, great Juice WRLD prove that they have great vocal chemistry on this song, which is the clear standout. This Pinkprint reissue is worth your time.

Andre 3000 Continues To Experiment With New EP “Moving Day”

Andre 3000 is on a mission to challenge himself. He spoke at length about the ways in which the flute removed the safety net of making music on his solo album New Blue Sun. It was not a direction anyone expected, nor was it one most fans wanted. That’s the thing about Andre 3000, though. He will follow his music. Moving Day, the Outkast rapper’s second official solo release, is more of the same. The EP sees him delve even further into his experimentation with free jazz and flute music. It’s definitely for patient listeners, and those willing to follow Stacks into some pretty esoteric places.

The first song, “Moving Day,” is a behemoth, 11 minute epic that sounds primal and patient. There’s very little in the way of melody or musical direction, but Andre 3000’s flute keeps things moving forward. It’s feels like more of an expansion on New Blue Sun than a refinement. We really hope you enjoyed “Moving Day,” though, because the second song, “Day Moving” is the same exact recording played in reverse. No we are not joking. Andre 3000 really tests listeners with this one. The good news is that the third song on the EP is in fact an original, “Tunnels of Egypt.” It follows more of the relaxed vibe of New Blue Sun, and it should since its billed as an outtake from that album.

Amine Showcases His Musical Range On Eclectic “.mp3s” EP

Amine has been keeping a low profile the last few years. He dropped a chilled out collab album with KAYTRANADA in 2023, but fans have to go all the way back to 2021 for a solo release. This is partially why the .mp3s EP is so exciting. It proves Amine is back up and running. There are four songs littered throughout this brief project, and we’re happy to report that all of them are good. They stand on their own, yet together they provide a broad picture of Amine’s range as a rapper. Fans already got to hear two of the songs before the EP’s release: “Passenger Princess” and “Adam.”

“Passenger Princess” is the most traditional piece of hip hop on the EP. Amine and Smino trade bars over a catchy soul chop. The duo have chemistry, and while they share eccentric deliveries, they sound varied enough to stand out. “Adam” is an guitar based ballad that sees Amine shift down into a Brockhampton sound. It works, and proves that he may even be an underrated vocalist. The new songs on here, “s2wik” and “Wingz” are similarly varied. The former is one of the strangest songs Amine has dropped yet, a tiny, glitchy electronic ballad with Autotune. “Wingz” sees him dig back into traditional rap territory alongside Cardo Got Wings. It’s brief, it’s fun, and you’ll like it.

YTB Fatt Keeps It Short And Simple With New Album “The Richest Foxx”

YTB Fatt has a tricky flow to replicate. He sounds like he’s running out of breath at times. Other times, he sounds like he just woke up and realized he was in the middle of a verse when he dozed off. These aren’t inherently bad things. They give his vocals a lot of character. It helps when he keeps his projects concise, and refrains from loading them up with tons of skits and repetitive songs. The Richest Foxx wisely keeps things short and simple. At eight songs and 20 minutes, the album allows YTB Fatt to flex his unique flow and songwriting skills over songs that boast a lot of replay value.

“FREE SMURK, BIG EDDIE & CAM” is the most heartfelt song on the album, musically and lyrically. The mournful piano keys sound fantastic over the snappy drum beat. The lyrics, meanwhile, see YTB Fatt wax poetic about friends who have been locked up. He sounds undeniably passionate talking about the likes of Lil Durk and Big Eddie. It’s hard not to be won over. “FATT DISS” and “HAHA” maintain the gritty menace of the opener, but they give YTB Fatt the chance to flash a bit more charisma. “HAHA” is an especially catchy song thanks to the rapper’s nonstop flow. The song takes two minutes to introduce drums, which means YTB Fatt is basically rhyming a capella. It’s a creative flourish unexpected as it is welcome.
