TOBi & Mick Jenkins Bring Some Top-Tier Writing To The Table On “Forgot We Were Seeds”

TOBi and Mick Jenkins are easily some of the most underrated MCs in the game as we speak. Both are able to write some top-flight raps, all while bring their distinct personalities to every track they lay down. The Nigerian native and Alabama-bred artists are teaming for just the second time in their careers, but you can tell they have effortless chemistry regardless. Speaking of which, the last time they were on the same song happened in 2021 with “Off The Drugs.” These two are once again rekindling their relationship on lyrically-focused TOBi single called “Forgot We Were Seeds.”

The last time we spoke about TOBi was for his 2023 album PANIC. That ended a three-year drought in between projects. For 2024, he is already off to a fast start, featuring on two singles “For Anybody” and “Back For Me.” So, “Forgot We Were Seeds” is TOBI’s first solo release. Outside of Mick Jenkins bringing tons of firepower to this song, the extremely-talented Dahi, formerly DJ Dahi, is laying down a funky boom bap instrumental.

As we mentioned, this song is filled with slick bars from both TOBi and Mick. The chorus also is excellently written too, “They tried to bury us and forgot we were seedsStay down through the lowest,” TOBi sings. It’s a hot girl summer ’cause we had ’em all winter ah… / They hate the world woke ’cause they love when you sleep n****,” he raps on his verse. These are just a few of the gems sprinkled throughout the track, so be sure to listen for yourself above.

Mick Jenkins Teams Up With Thelonious For Dark, Jazzy Cut “Yuck Freestyle”

One of the reasons Mick Jenkins is so versatile as an artist is that he fit on top of any production and kill it. While some might think that having a gritty and loud delivery could put you in a box, he makes it work. But that is not to say that the Alabama native cannot dial it back either. It was one of the main reasons why The Patience was such a success. His 2023 album contains some of the strongest rap records of the year such as “Show & Tell,” “Farm to Table,” “Smoke Break-Dance,” and more. In 2024, Mick Jenkins has been prolific with the features lately and he continues that hot streak with “Yuck Freestyle.”

Here, the veteran MC brings his wild trademark cadence to a dark and jazzy beat. The lead artist on this cut is Thelonious. He is making his debut on the HNHH site and unfortunately, there is not too much information on him. However, after doing some digging it appears he hails from Canada. Additionally, Thelonious has been releasing material since 2020.

From 2021 to the first quarter of 2022, he had been putting out tracks with Three Entertainment Group. After that, Thelonious switched over to Unit 01. This is him and Mick’s first-ever collaboration and we are going to need more from them in the future. Be sure to check it out above.

What are your thoughts on this brand-new single, “Yuck Freestyle,” by Mick Jenkins and Thelonious? Is this one of Mick’s best guest performances lately, why or why not? Mick Jenkins Tacks On Two New Tracks And Instrumentals To His Terrific 2023 Record “The Patience”

Mick Jenkins, an excellent wordsmith hailing from Huntsville, Alabama, is undoubtedly one of the most clever lyricists we have going in modern hip-hop. Also being raised in the south side of Chicago gave him the blue-collar grittiness that he displayed on his critically acclaimed album The Patience. Released on August 18, 2023, it featured a trim 11-song tracklist with standout features and performances. Now, it has just received a deluxe edition.

Let us just say that it somehow improves it. The new additions include “2011” and “Perm.” On top of that, Mick adds instrumentals for the original release. Furthermore, he adds some color to the cover art, which could be a nod to the waviest song about “color theory” on “Roy G. Biv.” If you listen on Apple Music and use Lossless audio, the deluxe sounds a bit louder compared to the previous edition.

Listen To The Patience (Deluxe Edition) By Mick Jenkins

However, tracks like “Pasta,” “Show & Tell” with Freddie Gibbs, “Farm to Table” featuring VIC MENSA, and more still sound great. Everything still sounds lush and the penmanship is still there on the new tracks. “2011” is another storytelling cut that sees Mick recalling where he was in his life and with his music career. “Perm” is the bigger banger of the two with great bars like these. “You seeing ballerinas if n****s is spinning the block / We stay on our toes, two hands on the clock / No bustdowns, that’s the neighborhood watch / Play Sasquatch, won’t see me in the spot.

What are your thoughts on this brand-new deluxe version of The Patience by Mick Jenkins? Is this the best body of work he has ever put out, why or why not? Out of the two deluxe tracks, which one is better? Does Mick deserve more credit as an MC, or is he properly rated? We would like to hear what you have to say about all of this. Mick Jenkins Excels On New Album “The Patience” With JID, Freddie Gibbs & More

One of Chicago’s finest is back, and Mick Jenkins understood the assignment on his brand new album “The Patience.” Moreover, fans already knew they were getting something special with its lead single, “Smoke Break-Dance” with JID. However, the tracklist still contains a lot of surprises, different emotional pallets, instrumental styles, and consistently great lyrical performances. It’s a concise and no-filler 27 minutes across 11 tracks, and also features Freddie Gibbs, Benny The Butcher, and Vic Mensa. Furthermore, the Alabama-born and Windy City-raised MC explained the concept behind this project in a press release.

The Patience: As best I can be, I am a person who does everything within his power to change his situation,” Mick Jenkins expressed. “I think with some level of consistency, that behavior inevitably leads you to a point where you have to wait. A point where the things that now need to happen to move you forward are no longer in your control. I see this as a period of time in one’s journey, no matter the length, where the unseen things must take place; The muscles must tear and repair, the understanding of a concept coming to you in a moment completely devoid of artistic intention. It’s through these moments where I’ve found myself being the most frustrated with patience. And this body of work sounds like that frustration.”

Mick Jenkins’ The Patience: Stream

Meanwhile, this might not be the longest or most dense album, but The Patience packs a big punch in a small swing. There are plenty of small but potent moments like the slow-burning “007,” all featured MCs’ great performances, the trap interlude “2004,” and the stark reflection on the closer. Don’t let this one fall under your radar; it’s one of the most tightly packaged efforts of the year so far. If you haven’t heard this album yet, find it on your preferred streaming service and peep the tracklist below. Mick Jenkins: Crafting Sonic Poetry Through Rap

With each release, Mick Jenkins has continued to prove that he is one of hip hop’s most creative lyricists. With three studio albums, multiple mixtapes and new music on the way, the Chicago rapper has set himself apart from his contemporaries. He is known for his distinctly deep voice, thought-provoking rhymes, and conceptual approach to music. Outspoken in his lyrics, Mick Jenkins has never been one to shy away from rapping about political issues and social injustices. His music strikes a balance between conscious lyricism and introspective poetry that captures listeners.

Born in Huntsville, Alabama, and raised in Chicago, Mick Jenkins began releasing mixtapes during his college years. Although he later dropped, his early output led to the release of his debut project, 2012’s The Mickstape. The following year, he released 2013’s Trees & Truths, a conceptual mixtape that utilized trees as an extended metaphor to discuss a range of topics. The project laid the foundation for his breakout mixtape the following year, The Water[s], exposing hip-hop fans to Mick Jenkins’s unique style of lyricism.

Mick Jenkins Refreshing Breakout, The Water[s]

In 2014, Mick Jenkins released his fourth mixtape, The Water[s]. Much like Trees & Truths, it was a conceptual work that made use of water as its primary motif. On The Water[s], Mick Jenkins refined his rapping style, creating a signature sound. The mixtape arrived during a post-Acid Rap Chicago scene where non-drill rappers started to shine, bringing balance to a city’s reputation for violent music. Songs like “Martyrs” and “Jazz” exemplified the soul and substance of the mixtape’s lyrical content and production. The Water[s] featured Joey Bada$$, as well as Chicago artists including Jean Deaux, The Mind, and Noname, all of whom are close collaborators with Mick. The project gained Mick Jenkins a cult following and recognition as one of the most exciting new artists at the time.

A Knack for Experimentation

In addition to his skills as a rapper and songwriter, Mick Jenkins has a distinct ear for production. The Water[s] saw him rapping over spacious yet modern production, and he continued to experiment with his sound on future releases. His 2015 EP, Wave[s] displayed his versatility with melodic dance songs and glitchy beats, testing different flows and cadences.

Mick Jenkins’s 2016 debut album, The Healing Component was a culmination of his skill, imagination, and knack for experimentation. The album was centered around themes of love, applying it to personal relationships between himself and others. It blended multiple genres, including hip-hop, R&B, electronic, and jazz, all with the help of close collaborators. The Healing Component included production from the likes of Kaytranada, THEMpeople, Sango, and BADBADNOTGOOD. His second album, 2018’s Pieces of a Man further showcased Mick’s ability to shine over any type of production with intricate bars and passionate melodies.
