Cardi B Explains Why It Bothers Her When Fans Call Her Mexican

Earlier this week, Cardi had a viral interaction online discussing her heritage with fans. In a series of tweets she stood up for her Dominican identity and took offense at those who called her Mexican. She even brought up Ice Spice, who caught the tweet herself and posted a response. Some fans misinterpreted their interaction as being more hostile than it was. The two had to share some pictures of them together at the Vanity Fair Oscars party and publicly bond over their Dominican heritage just to shut down the beef rumors.

Now in a new TikTok live, Cardi explained further why she takes issue with being called Mexican by fans. “A lot of people keep saying damn, why is it I feel offended when people call me Mexican? Because I’m not Mexican! I’m not Mexican. My nationalities don’t have the same culture. We speak the same language, we have different dialects. We don’t eat the same food, we don’t eat the same nothing. Call a Nigerian Ghanaian. Call a Haitian Jamaican. Call a Jamaican a Haitian. Call Guyanese a Trini and you tell me how they gonna feel. You tell me how they gonna feel!” she says in the livestream. But that’s only the beginning of her explanation. Check out the full clip of Cardi talking about her nationality below.

Cardi B Talks Taking Offense From Fan Comments

Later in the video, she elaborates further. “Y’all do that sh*t to irritate me. And not only do you y’all call me a Mexican, y’all call me a dirty Mexican. So, of course, I’m gonna defend myself every single time you guys do it. You’re not gonna keep erasing my nationalities” she explains. The discussion concludes with her once again refusing to accept fans trying to erase who she is.

After years of teasing, Cardi is gearing up to drop her long-awaited second album this year. She’s already dropped two new singles so far in the lead up to the project. Lefty SM Shot & Killed In Guadalajara, Mexican Rapper Was Only 31

Yet another tragedy has struck the world of hip-hop, this time taking place in Mexico. As HipHopDX reports, a shooting in Guadalajara this past weekend left 31-year-old Lefty SM dead. The foreign rapper’s record label, Alzada, confirmed the upsetting news in an Instagram post which has since been translated into English. “Dear Alzada friends and family, with profound sadness we’re informing you about the death of our brother, Lefty SM, Juan Carlos Sauceda,” they shared with followers.

The late lyricist leaves behind a wife, Maria Isabel, and the couple’s two daughters. At the time of his death, the “Volando” artist was reportedly attacked near his home in Mexico. Police haven’t yet shared a motive for the crime. An official report is expected to come from authorities later today (September 4). Fans both old and new are shocked by the news of Lefty’s death. Many of them have been sharing heartfelt tributes to the rising star online.

Lefty SM’s Record Label Confirms His Tragic Death

Lefty’s name may not be familiar to those who only listen to American rap, but in the world of Latin hip-hop, he was making serious waves. He’s spent most of his life mastering the art of writing rhymes, beginning in 1992, though it wasn’t until 2017 when his YouTube channel really took off. Unfortunately, he won’t be around to further push boundaries in the music world. Still, it’s not likely that his loved ones will let his legacy be forgotten. As we’ve seen with other artists taken too soon, there’s always a possibility for posthumous features or albums.

It’s been a sad few days in terms of fatalities being reported in the news. Aside from Lefty SM’s fatal shooting in Mexico, Rihanna’s cousin, Tanella Alleyne was also buried in Barbados recently. Read more about that tragedy at the link below, and check back later for more hip-hop/pop culture news updates.

Cardi B Dances To Celebrate Cinco De Mayo, Jokes About Being Considered Mexican

Cardi B found that the best way to wish everyone a happy Cinco de Mayo would be to show off her impressive dancing skills. Moreover, she uploaded a clip to Twitter of her busting some moves to a live rendition of “La Chona” by Danny Felix, popping her belly out and hopping along. It’s not quite the fantastic fluidity that one expects from a track like that, but we’ll take what we can get. Regardless, the recent Met Gala show-stopper faced a lot of people online claiming that she is Mexican, or at least assuming her heritage. After having some fun with people’s confusion online, she tweeted out a joke about her presumed nationality.

“We’ll never beat the Mexican allegations omg,” one fan wrote on the social media platform. Then, Cardi B quote-tweeted a cheeky response. “I mean they claim I’m Mexican… I might as well embrace my new nationality lol.” However, the Bronx rapper then deleted her post for unknown reasons, though it’s possibly due to people bashing the statement for its potential insensitivity. After all, Cardi faced a lot of criticism in the past for identifying as a Black woman when many others would say otherwise. For the record, she is of Dominican and Trinidadian descent with African and Spanish roots.

Cardi B’s Dance Moves Wish Everyone A Happy Cinco De Mayo

No matter your view on her nationality, at the end of the day, it was just a fun video that she might have put her foot in her mouth over. Still, it must take a toll on her if other events like the Met Gala, for example, already give her anxiety. “Every single time that I got to the Met, it’s fun of course,” Cardi B said in a behind-the-scenes clip from the occasion. “After my first time going to the Met, I always get anxiety. And the anxieties just grow and grow and grow. Maybe because my looks are so spectacular that people just expect every year to be more amazing than the last. And it’s so hard because imagine competing with myself. That is sickening.”

Meanwhile, the 30-year-old remains as entertaining as an artist as she does an online personality. Recently, her and her husband Offset recreated the viral “spicy bowl” to fruitful results. Whether she’s participating in trends or setting them, everything she does seems to have a dash of fun-loving energy in it despite potential controversy.
