TMZ broke the news on June 28. Bronny James has worn a number of different numbers over the years. He rocked “0” when he played on Sierra Canyon, but that has already been claimed by Lakers star Jalen Hood-Schifino. He wore “6” during his time with the USC Trojans, but he was never going to be able to wear it in the NBA. The number “6” has been retired league wide, in honor of Boston Celtics legend Bill Russell. Bronny also shied away from rocking a number that his dad has worn, like “23.” He ultimately settled on “9,” which is a number he actually has tattooed on his body. Bronny James has a “999” behind his ear. The tattoo is a tribute to one of his favorite rappers, Juice WRLD.
TMZ also confirmed that Bronny James will have a “Jr.” on his jersey name. The outlet did not clarify whether LeBron James will have a “Sr.” added to his jersey, however. Regardless of what happens with naming conventions, the Lakers are thrilled to have both James’ on their team. Rob Pelinka, the Lakers vice president of basketball operations and general manager, issued a statement following the draft. “In the history of the NBA,” he wrote. “There’s never been a father and a son that have shared an NBA basketball court. And that feels like something that could be magical.”
Bronny James has yet to discuss the historical significance of his situation. His father, who is rarely at a loss for words, has also been quiet. Sources close to the Lakers legend claimed that he was “emotional” following the draft selection. The only direct acknowledgment of the father-son achievement has been on Bronny’s Twitter account. Savannah James is a proud mother today and for good reasons. Overall, her oldest son Bronny was drafted into the NBA last night. He was taken 55th overall by the Los Angeles Lakers. Consequently, he will now get to play on the same court as his father. There is no telling whether or not Bronny will earn a spot on the Lakers roster. In fact, it is believed that he will likely end up on the team’s G-League affiliate. However, this is still a massive accomplishment for the young man.

The speculation is over. Bronny James’ fate was a hotly-debated topic heading into the NBA Draft because of his father, LeBron. The GOAT candidate made it clear that he wanted to play alongside Bronny before he walked off the court. And he got his wish on Thursday, June 27. Bronny James was selected by Los Angeles Lakers in the second round of the NBA Draft, according to ESPN. The 19-year-old was the 55th pick.
The Lakers’ decision is historic. It marks the first time in NBA history that a father and son will play in the league at the same time. Naturally, they will will the first father-son duo to do it on the same team as well. LeBron James has been pushing for the acquisition of Bronny since 2023, when he told reporters that he had one more item on his career bucket list. “I need to be on the floor with my boy,” he announced. “I got to be on the floor with Bronny.”
King James isn’t the only Lakers star who has vouched for Bronny James. Anthony Davis praised the teenager’s abilities during a pre-draft interview with ESPN. “He’s very good defensively,” Davis told the outlet. “He can read the floor very well. I think he’s a really good playmaker.. I think he’s going to be fine, man. Obviously it’s a lot of pressure on him with his dad being who he is.” The pressure is something that Bronny himself has addressed. He acknowledged the extra attention he’s gotten is largely due to who his father is, but asserts that he will prove himself an NBA-worthy player if given the opportunity.

In a tweet from Halleemah Nash, Redick was accused of calling the woman the N-word while she was working with the Duke basketball team.
“I’ve only been called the N word to my face by a white man once in my life and it was on the campus of Duke University while I was doing work with the basketball team,” Nash wrote. “And today he was named the new head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers. What a world.” Subsequently, this tweet went viral, and NBA fans were trying to make sense of all of this. Numerous questions were raised, and some pondered whether or not Redick would lose his job.

On Monday, the Los Angeles Lakers introduced JJ Redick, a 15-year NBA veteran who retired in 2021 and has since made a name for himself as an ESPN analyst, as their new head coach. Redick, 40, recently called the 2024 NBA Finals after his promotion to ESPN’s lead broadcast team but said the opportunity to coach the Lakers was too good to turn down.
Known for his sharpshooting skills, Redick ranks 19th in career 3-pointers made in NBA history. Although he lacks NBA coaching experience, the former two-time First-Team All-American at Duke is confident in his abilities to lead the team.
“I have zero coaching experience in the NBA, but I would argue that I’m very experienced,” Redick said. “I got to play for Coach K for four years, spent 15 years as a player …”
Redick’s transition from media to coaching has been in the works for some time. Despite his success as an analyst, he remained interested in a potential coaching career. After interviewing with the Toronto Raptors last year, Redick began preparing for a move to the sidelines.

As for NBA Twitter, they find this all very humorous. Numerous jokes have been made at Redick’s expense today. Most of them have to do with Redick being chronically online. For instance, some suggest that Redick is going to go to Twitter for strategy. It’s a ridiculous notion, but it makes for some funny banter. Redick has little to not head coaching experience at this level, so it will be interesting to see how the players respond to him. This could be genius, or this could be a disaster.

Overall, Bronny James had a difficult season at USC. Of course, much of this stemmed from the cardiac arrest he suffered in training camp. Although he returned to the team throughout the season, he was simply not the same player. His statistics suffered and analysts agreed he was not being utilized properly. However, Bronny declared for the NBA Draft anyway which goes down on June 26-27. Based on projections, he will likely be taking in the second round, on Day Two.
There are two teams, in particular, that Bronny has agreed to workout with. Those two teams are the Los Angeles Lakers and the Phoenix Suns. Fans know LeBron wants to play with son, so the Lakers aren’t surprising. Meanwhile, the Suns have a team with lots of talent, albeit little depth, and the concept of luring LeBron there is certainly unique. That said, in the clip below, you can see that Bronny already had his workout with the Lakers.
The Lakers hold the 55th pick in the draft, and many believe that is where he will be taken. Whether or not he actually plays any games, remains to be seen. Moreover, there is a sense he could be sent to the G League to develop. He has plenty of potential, but he is undersized at 6’1 and that has led to some debates about his NBA viability. Only time will tell whether or not he can swing it once he gets to the pros.
