BET Awards 2024 Nominations: Sportsman Of The Year

The BET Awards 2024 nominations have been announced, celebrating the achievements and excellence of Black entertainers across various fields. One of the most anticipated categories is the Sportsman of the Year Award. As the name suggests, it recognizes the extraordinary contributions of male athletes in their respective sports. Here is a closer look at each nominee, as well as why they have been chosen for this prestigious award.

Anthony Edwards

Anthony Edwards is the shooting guard for the Minnesota Timberwolves. Nicknamed “Ant-Man,” he has quickly risen to prominence in the NBA. Edwards is known for his explosive athleticism and scoring ability and has been a standout player since being drafted first overall in 2020. The 2023-2024 season has been great for him, with his performance nothing short of spectacular. Edwards’ impact on the court and his charismatic personality shows he’s a deserving nominee at the 2024 BET Awards.

Gervonta Davis

Gervonta “Tank” Davis continues to dominate the world of professional boxing with his powerful punches and undefeated record. He has also secured several high-profile victories over the past year, solidifying his status as one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the sport. Davis went from being the WBA’s Regular champion for four consecutive years before moving on to holding the WBA lightweight title since 2023. His remarkable knockout power and ability to entertain fans with thrilling bouts have earned him a nomination.

Jalen Brunson

Jalen Marquis Brunson, the talented point guard for the New York Knicks, has played a central role in his team’s resurgence. Since signing with the Knicks in 2022, he has made his presence worthwhile. Known for his leadership, court vision, and scoring efficiency, Brunson has helped guide the Knicks to a successful season. His ability to perform under pressure and his significant contributions in crucial games have not gone unnoticed. Brunson’s consistent excellence and influence on the Knicks’ performance earned him a spot among the nominees.

Jalen Hurts

The current holder of this award, Jalen Alexander Hurts is looking for a second win at the 2024 BET Awards. He has had a standout season, demonstrating his prowess both as a passer and a runner. He joined the Philadelphia Eagles as their quarterback in 2020 and has been a phenomenal addition. Hurts has led the Eagles with remarkable poise, helping them secure important victories. Overall, his impressive performance this season has rightfully earned him a nomination for Sportsman of the Year.

Kyrie Irving

Kyrie Irving, currently playing for the Dallas Mavericks, remains one of the most skilled and creative players in the NBA. Known for his extraordinary ball-handling skills and scoring ability, Irving continues to amaze fans and opponents alike. Despite the ups and downs in his career, his talent and influence on the court are undeniable. Undoubtedly, Irving’s nomination at the 2024 BET Awards is very well-deserved.

LeBron James

LeBron James continues to defy expectations. The legendary forward for the Los Angeles Lakers remains one of the most influential and dominant figures in basketball, breaking records, as well as setting new benchmarks. His leadership, experience, and unparalleled skill have aided the Lakers in crucial games, further solidifying his legacy. LeBron’s continued excellence and his significant impact on the sport make him a perennial favorite for this award. It’s no surprise why he’s the most nominated in this category, with 20 nods to his name. With nine wins, he’s also the most awarded and is looking to extend his record to 10 at the 2024 BET Awards.

Patrick Mahomes

Three Super Bowl wins in five seasons is a remarkable feat, and Patrick Mahomes can proudly boast of this accomplishment. The superstar quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs has once again proven why he is considered one of the best in the NFL. Mahomes’ exceptional talent, including his strong arm, quick decision-making, and ability to perform in high-pressure situations, has led the Chiefs to numerous victories. Since becoming the Chiefs’ quarterback in 2018, the team has had several AFC Championship Game appearances and four Super Bowl appearances. His career accolades have earned him a spot on this list.

Stephen Curry

Stephen Curry, the iconic guard of the Golden State Warriors, continues to revolutionize basketball with his exceptional three-point shooting. Curry’s ability to change the dynamics of a game with his long-range shooting has earned him numerous accolades and a massive fan following. His performance in the past season was marked by clutch shots and record-extending moments. At the 2024 BET Awards, Curry stands a chance of extending his number of wins to six!

BET Awards 2024 Nominations: Best Female Hip Hop Artist

The 2024 BET Awards will continue the prestigious celebration of excellence in Black entertainment and culture. This year’s nominees for Best Female Hip Hop Artist encapsulate the dynamic and ever-evolving nature of the genre. As expected from such a prestigious ceremony, the competition this year in just about every category is fierce. However, the Best Female Hip Hop Artist category has to be among the most unpredictable because of its stacked lineup. All eight trailblazing female artists have carved out their own space, pushing the boundaries of creativity and authenticity.

Cardi B

Since she dropped “Bodak Yellow” in 2017, Cardi B has dominated the music industry. Although her only album right now was released six years ago, she has remained relevant every year since then. This year is no different, and it’s no surprise she’s being recognized once again by the BET Awards. Over the past year, she released hit songs like “Bongos” ft. Megan Thee Stallion, and “Enough (Miami),” among others. With two awards in this category already, a win in 2024 would make her the third most-awarded artist in the category alongside Megan Thee Stallion.

Doja Cat

Doja Cat was first nominated in this category in 2020. Altogether, including 2024’s nod, it brings it up to three nominations for the rapper in this category. Sadly, she unfortunately didn’t win any of the previous two nominations. However, at the 2024 BET Awards, the “Agora Hills” rapper could finally bag a win in this highly competitive category. While she is up against strong contenders, she has a pretty good chance of winning. With her Scarlet album and songs like “Paint the Town Red” to her name, she could take it this time.

GloRilla

When GloRilla debuted in 2019, not everyone saw the vision of the artist she could be. However, since then, brick by brick, she has built a name and a space for herself in the industry. She was first nominated in this category at last year’s ceremony but lost to Latto. At the 2024 BET Awards, however, she could finally take home her first Best Female Hip Hop Artist win.

Ice Spice

The ascent of Ice Spice has been nothing short of phenomenal. The 24-year-old rapper burst onto the scene in 2022 with her viral hit, “Munch (Feelin’ U).” Since then, she has risen the ranks at an unbelievable pace and is now regarded as one of the most exciting new acts in Hip Hop. Her first BET nod came in 2023 when she was nominated in four categories. While she missed out on all four, she has another chance at the 2024 BET Awards. This time, she’s up for three awards, one of which is the coveted Best Female Hip Hop Artist award. Considering the lineup, she may be regarded as the underdog. However, the biggest mistake anyone could make would be underestimating her and undermining her chances.

Latto

The current holder of this award, Latto, has had a taste of the glory, and she’s come back for more. The rapper had a good year, releasing notable tracks like “Seven” with Jungkook, “Issa Party” ft. BabyDrill, and “Sunday Service.” There’s no question about why she was shortlisted; her chances are just as good as the other nominees’. It’s her fourth nomination so far in this category. If she defends the crown she currently holds, it would be her second win in the Best Female Hip Hop Artist category.

Megan Thee Stallion

Without a doubt, Megan Thee Stallion is one of the biggest female acts in the current Hip Hop scene. She has been nominated in this category every year since 2019 and has won three of those nominations so far. Evidently, the quality of her work speaks for itself, and that’s why she is one of the biggest threats on this list. Her record-breaking track “Hiss” is arguably the biggest female Hip Hop track of 2024. The rapper has an impeccable record, and she may very well take home the gold again at the 2024 BET Awards.

Nicki Minaj

It goes without saying, Nicki Minaj is Hip Hop royalty. Widely regarded as the Queen of Rap, she is also the most nominated and awarded artist in this category. She has been nominated a whopping 14 times, and has won seven of those so far. At the 2024 BET Awards, she could extend her impressive record with an eighth win. Minaj’s highly anticipated fifth album was released in December 2023. The project contains many fire tracks, including “FTCU,” “Everybody,” and “Super Freaky Girl,” among others. Additionally, it has been praised by listeners around the globe. It would certainly not be shocking if the beloved album secures the rapper another Best Female Hip Hop Artist win.

Sexyy Red

It’s Sexyy Red’s world, and we’re all just living in it. The rapper has had an unbelievable year and has been on an insane run since early 2023. Releasing hit solo tracks and being featured on other hit songs, she’s undoubtedly one of the hottest female rappers right now. Admittedly, she is the underdog, as this is her very first nomination in this category. However, her influence and renown in the music industry over the past year have been undeniable. At the 2024 BET Awards, Sexyy Red has a good chance of taking home the award for Best Female Hip Hop Artist. It’s anyone’s game at this point, and that’s how strong the lineup is. That’s what makes it so exciting. Tune in on June 30 to see whose side the scale will tip toward.

BET Awards 2024 Nominations: Best Female R&B/Pop Artist

On June 30, celebrities and fans will gather for the 2024 BET Awards. In the category of Best Female R&B/Pop Artist, several phenomenal women have been nominated. All the artists up for the award released some of their best music in the past year, which means it could go one of eight ways. Between the first-time nominee Victoria Monét and the Queen of the BET Awards, Beyoncé, there’s no telling who will emerge victorious. Nonetheless, it’s been a wonderful time for R&B and Pop music, and these women are at the forefront of the genre right now.

With ten wins out of 18 nominations, Beyoncé is both the most awarded and the most nominated in the category. SZA won the award last year and is also up for the trophy again. New faces include Muni Long, who achieved viral success once again with “Made For You,” and the Amapiano Princess, Tyla. All women deserve their flowers for delivering exceptional music and performances over the past year. Here are the eight women nominated for Best Female R&B/Pop Artist at the 2024 BET Awards.

Beyoncé

She needs no introduction. Beyoncé has picked up ten wins in this category and is looking to extend her number of wins to 11. Her first win came in 2004, and 20 years later, she is up against a new crop of artists. This testament to her longevity and legacy is evident in her constant reinvention of her artistry. Following her acclaimed Renaissance World Tour and its accompanying film, it’s no surprise why Queen Bey has emerged as the third most nominated act at the upcoming 2024 BET Awards.

Tyla

Tyla is a first-time nominee in this category and boasts four nods at the 2024 BET Awards. The South African starlet achieved worldwide success in 2023 with her viral hit “Water.” Since then, it’s been up for Tyla. The smash hit made waves across the globe, stamping her name into people’s consciousness. She’s currently raising the bar with her sound and pushing the gospel of Amapiano music to the rest of the world. She’s arguably the underdog of not just the category but the entire ceremony.

Victoria Monét

Once upon a time, Victoria Monét was known more for her songwriting prowess. Today, she’s one of the biggest names in music. After the massive success of her debut album, Jaguar II, the world now knows her as an artist and performer in her own right. At the upcoming 2024 BET Awards, Monét is nominated for four awards and will also perform on the main stage.

Coco Jones

After a steady ascent to mainstream stardom, Coco Jones is now here to stay. She earned her first nomination in this category last year and can now boast of back-to-back nods. Early last year, she released the deluxe edition of her acclaimed EP, What I Didn’t Tell You. Since then, she has been all over, boosting her popularity through Christmas music and multiple live performances.

Doja Cat

In 2023, Doja Cat made the confident leap back to her rap roots. Evidently, the gamble she took on herself paid off. Scarlet, her fourth album, was a definitive body of work. While she’s stirred up some controversy in the past year, Doja’s talents have never been up for question. With a perfect blend of Hip Hop, R&B, and trap, Scarlet proved Doja’s ability to rap alongside the best of them. She has been hard at work the last few months, completing the North American leg of The Scarlet Tour.

H.E.R.

She may have just one studio album to her name, but H.E.R. is R&B royalty. Since 2018, she has been nominated in this category and has gained yet another nod at the 2024 BET Awards. Altogether, she has seven nods, making her the third most nominated woman in the Best Female R&B/Pop Artist category. Since her 2023 nomination, H.E.R. sang on The Color Purple soundtrack, joined Coldplay on tour, and performed with Usher at the 2024 Super Bowl Halftime Show.

Muni Long

Muni Long might have just scored her first award in this category, but she has been hard at work in the industry for years. She’s penned songs for several notable names, from Rihanna to Ariana Grande. After achieving mainstream success with “Hrs and Hrs” in 2022, she continued her run with the viral hit “Made for Me.” As one of three first-time nominees, Muni Long is definitely one of the underdogs of the night. She will also be performing on the main stage at the awards ceremony.

SZA

With five nominations at the 2024 BET Awards, SZA is the third most nominated artist of the night. She’s aiming for a second win, following her success in the category at last year’s ceremony. It comes as no surprise why she’s one of the favorites to win. SZA’s impressive run with SOS continued deep into 2023. In fact, she’s still reaping the rewards of her talents almost two years later. She is currently on the 2024 run of her SOS Tour, with shows scattered across the United States, Europe, Canada, New Zealand, and South America.

Jennifer Lopez’s Dating History—Including Her 4 Marriages

Jennifer Lopez’s ninth studio album, This Is Me… Now, has had one of the most interesting rollouts in music history. The album was accompanied by a visual film titled This Is Me… Now: A Love Story and a documentary titled The Greatest Love Story Never Told. Both have been the talk of many on social media for the last few weeks. The album and its accompanying material are all heavily inspired by Jennifer Lopez’s romantic highs and lows with her exes throughout her career.

Moreover, it all culminated in her reunion with her current husband Ben Affleck. However, the rumor mill is abuzz with news that “Bennifer” is allegedly having trouble within their marriage. J. Lo has been vocal about wearing her heart on her sleeve, so only the future will tell where the pair stand. Nonetheless, here’s Jennifer Lopez’s entire dating history, featuring her exes and former marriages.

David Cruz (Mid ’80s – Mid ’90s)

Not much was known about the first of Jennifer Lopez’s exes. David Cruz was a high-school sweetheart with whom she dated for about a decade. They went their separate ways just as Lopez got her big break with her role in Selena. David Cruz sadly died of heart disease in 2020.

First Husband: Ojani Noa (1997 – 1998)

Ojani Noa was Lopez’s first public relationship and marriage. At the time, he worked as a waiter in Miami, where he met the entertainer, and they quickly tied the knot in 1997. Less than a year later, the pair called it quits, seemingly due to Noa getting fired from the Cuban restaurant Lopez had opened at the time. Their split was also messy for a few years, and Noa tried to sue J. Lo multiple times.  She even had to send him a cease and desist when he wanted to make a movie about her.

Sean “Diddy” Combs (1999 – 2001)

One of Jennifer Lopez’s most popular exes is none other than Diddy.  Their romance was highly publicized, and the pair were regarded as a power couple. They began dating at the early stages of Lopez’s venture into music after previously focusing on her acting career. He was also by her side at some of her most iconic moments, such as the 2000s Grammys, when she wore the famous green Versace dress. They broke up due to Comb’s infidelity, and Lopez has stated that they are now friends.

Second Husband: Cris Judd (2001 – 2003)

J. Lo met her second husband, Cris Judd, when he joined the crew for the music video for her song “Love Don’t Cost a Thing.” Judd signed on as the video’s choreographer and director. They got married in 2001 but split less than a year later. Lopez said the pair just “didn’t have what it takes to make a marriage work.”

Ben Affleck (2002 – 2004)

The most sensationalized relationship of Lopez’s life was surely her pairing with A-List actor Ben Affleck. The couple met on the set of the movie Gigly and were engaged by late 2002. Referred to as “Bennifer” by the media, the high scrutiny of their relationship would cause them to postpone and eventually cancel their wedding. One of the more prominent exes in her life, Jennifer Lopez and Ben would later rekindle their romance two decades later.

Third Husband: Marc Anthony (2004 – 2011)

Only a few months after calling it quits with Affleck, Jennifer Lopez married fellow actor and musician Marc Anthony in a secret ceremony in 2004. This is her longest marriage, and the couple share two kids, fraternal twins Max and Emme. They first collaborated on the song “No Me Ames” from Lopez’s first album, and throughout their marriage, they teamed frequently on various projects. They separated in 2011 and stated that it was a mutual decision. Moreover, they maintain a healthy co-parenting relationship.

Casper Smart (2011 – 2016)

J. Lo started dating another dancer shortly after her split from Marc Anthony was announced. She shared that Casper Smart, with whom she had an 18-year age gap, “helped her heal” from the divorce. The couple had an on-and-off relationship for a few years before finally ending things in 2016 after Smart reportedly cheated on her. He notably choreographed many of her performances during their time together.

Drake (2016)

Rumors that Jennifer Lopez was dating Canadian rapper Drake began to spread in 2016. Drizzy posted a picture of them cozying up on his Instagram. The pair seemed to have spent some time together, but sources say that it was never official. Jennifer Lopez went on record to clarify that she was not in a relationship with Drake, striking him off her list of exes.

Alex Rodriguez (2017 – 2021)

Lopez and Rodriguez met at a Yankees game in 2005, and she claims they felt “weird electricity.” However, it wasn’t until 2017 that they would get together. She was with the MLB star for many years, attending multiple events together such as the MET Gala, Oscars, and Golden Globes. In 2019, the pair got engaged in the Bahamas but postponed their wedding due to the COVID-19 Pandemic in 2020. They announced their split a year later, claiming they were “better as friends.”

Ben Affleck (2021 – present)

Rumors that Lopez had reunited with her old flame began to surface in 2021. This followed Lopez and Affleck’s splits from their partners, Alex Rodriguez and Jennifer Garner. A year later, they tied the knot at a small, surprise wedding in Las Vegas. Subsequently, they held a bigger event later that year in Georgia. Lopez’s latest album, This Is Me…Now, is dedicated to Affleck, coming full circle from 2002’s This Is Me…Then, which she dedicated to him during their first stint together. While there are rumors that their marriage is now on the rocks, it’s not enough to claim that Ben Affleck joins Jennifer Lopez’s “exes” list a second time.

BET Awards 2024 Nominations: A Peek At Best Male R&B/Pop Artist

The BET Awards is a spectacle that many look forward to annually, and the 2024 ceremony promises to be grand. In a year brimming with extraordinary talent, the awarding body has once again unveiled the nominees for the coveted honors. Without a doubt, one of the most competitive categories this year is the Best Male R&B/Pop Artist category. This year’s lineup is a testament to the evolving landscape of R&B and pop music.

While it features veteran acts like Usher and Chris Brown, it also highlights first-time nominees like Fridayy and October London. All eight artists who have been nominated in this category have an equal claim to the gold and are very deserving of this recognition. On June 30, we’ll find out which of these stars will take home the award. In the meantime, let’s take a look at the male artists who have bagged a nomination in this category for the 2024 BET Awards.

Brent Faiyaz

Since he broke into the music scene with his debut album in 2017, Brent Faiyaz has been a force to reckon with. The singer-songwriter is widely regarded as one of the most influential acts in contemporary R&B. Faiyaz released his debut mixtape, Larger Than Life, on October 27, 2023, and it has been well received by fans and critics alike. Additionally, over the past year, he was a featured artist on a handful of tracks. Faiyaz appeared on “Fell in Love” with Marshmello and “Should’ve Worn a Bonnet” with 21 Savage, among others. Altogether, the quality of the music he has put out within the past year has earned him a spot on this list.

Bryson Tiller

Bryson Tiller took the world by storm in 2015 when he released his beloved debut album, TRAPSOUL. Since then, he has won three BET awards, and soon, he might bag another victory. If he wins the award for Best Male R&B/Pop Artist, it would be his second in the category. Further, the singer dropped his eponymous fourth studio album in April 2024. The project is among the best R&B releases of the year so far. With this in mind, it’s no surprise Bryson Tiller has been nominated in this category at the 2024 BET Awards.

Burna Boy

Widely known as the African Giant, Burna Boy is at the forefront of the Afrobeats movement. The artist has been on an unstoppable roll for a while now and shows no sign of stopping anytime soon. He has won three BET awards in the past, and in 2024, he might add to his list of wins. Although he was nominated in this category in 2023, he lost to Usher and Chris Brown. This year, he faces both artists again and has a chance of taking the win this time. The work he is being recognized for is I Told Them, his seventh studio album.

Chris Brown

While there may not be any clear favorites this year, Chris Brown is certainly the biggest threat on this list. With seven wins out of 16 nominations in this category alone, he is the most-awarded artist in this category. At the 2024 BET Awards, he might extend his record even further. Over the past year, he released and contributed to several quality records, so there is no question as to why he is being recognized. Alongside Usher, Brown is currently holding this award.

Drake

The 6 God has been one of the most relevant artists in the industry for a while. Since his debut, Drake has not let up, dropping undeniable hits year in and year out. In 2024, he released his eighth studio album, For All the Dogs. The project contains several hits, including “Rich Baby Daddy,” “First Person Shooter,” and “Slime You Out,” among others. Drake has received nominations from the BET Awards every year from 2010 till 2024. Altogether, he has won 17 BET awards, but none in this category. As a matter of fact, this is his second nomination in the Best Male R&B/Pop Artist category following 2023’s nomination. Tune in on June 30 to find out if he’ll take home the gold this time.

Fridayy

With his distinct baritone and eclectic blend of R&B and Hip Hop, Fridayy has won the hearts of many. The singer released his eponymous debut album on August 25, 2023. The 14-track project has helped announce him as one of the most exciting new R&B acts. It has also earned him his first BET nomination at the 2024 awards ceremony. Evidently, Fridayy has a bright future, and fans are eager to witness his rise.

October London

The second of two first-time nominees on this list, October London is a very promising R&B act. The 37-year-old singer signed to Snoop Dogg’s Death Row Records has been releasing music since 2022. However, it was his third studio album, The Rebirth of Marvin, that put him under the spotlight. He is nominated in two categories at the 2024 BET Awards and may very well win his first major award this year.

Usher

Another R&B veteran, Usher, has been nominated in this category 11 times and won four of those nods. Behind Chris Brown, he is the second most nominated act in this category and has the second most wins. Following his Super Bowl Halftime performance, Usher released his ninth studio album, Coming Home, on February 9, 2024. The 20-track album reminds listeners why the singer is regarded by many as R&B’s champion. At the 2024 BET Awards ceremony, he has the chance to inch closer to Chris Brown’s record seven wins. Award night promises to be very entertaining indeed.

Which Rappers Should J. Cole Choose For A Collab Album?

Hip-hop fans have been looking forward to a possible J. Cole collab for years. The North Carolina-born rapper is widely considered one of contemporary hip-hop’s “Big 3.” That is, he stands side-by-side in the company of luminaries like Kendrick Lamar and Drake. Rumors of a J. Cole collab record began circulating recently after Black Thought revealed the possibility was once on the table. On a recent episode of the This Week in White Supremacy podcast, The Roots co-founder said that J. Cole approached him about collaborating on a full-length record back in 2018. But the potential combination never panned out, leaving the public curious about what might appear down the line.

Fans have been waiting for a proper J. Cole collab LP for years, but he’s never fulfilled their hopes. Of course, Cole has done various collaborations on single joints – like when he and Kendrick did “Forbidden Fruit” together – but what we’ve really been waiting on is a full-length. Speaking of K.Dot, there’s been talk for years about the desire for a J. Cole collaborative album, but more on that later. From Black Thought to André 3000, here’s a list of seven A-list rappers J. Cole could choose for a collab LP.

Black Thought: Different Wavelengths

When J. Cole approached Black Thought back in 2018, the two didn’t know each other too well. Still, Thought was willing to entertain the idea of a J. Cole collab and the pair exchanged beats and feedback. At the time, Thought was interested in taking a more aggressive route with his music. It seemed like Cole was on the opposite end of the spectrum, seeking a more peaceful soundscape. This is essentially why the pair’s paths didn’t match up at that point. Thought was trying to veer away from the familiar sound he’d cultivated with The Roots and felt Cole was simply steering too close to it. It was simply not the right time.

Kendrick Lamar: The J. Cole Collab That Never Came To Be

As we mentioned in the introduction, Kendrick Lamar and J. Cole collaborated in the past. Way back in 2013, the pair did the track “Forbidden Fruit” together, which appeared on J. Cole’s sophomore full-length Born Sinner. In terms of a collaborative LP, there’s been on-again, off-again talk about such an effort for years. On Lil Yachty’s A Safe Place podcast back in November 2023, Cole spoke about what’s taken place. It seems that he and Lamar began talking about the possibility early on in their careers and did actually make some real effort toward it as well. A couple of tracks were demo’ed a long time ago. But the collab never came to fruition, mainly because the pair’s schedules became way too hectic—what, with their solo careers, touring, and families. And for it to really happen and be the best product they can put together, the two know it would take substantial investment and time.

ScHoolboy Q: A Friend With Unique Style

LOS ANGELES, CA – JUNE 29: Hip hop artist Schoolboy Q performs during the Snoop Dogg, Kendrick Lamar, J.Cole, Miguel and SchoolBoyQ concert during the 2013 BET Experience at Staples Center on June 29, 2013 in Los Angeles, California. (Photo by Chelsea Lauren/Getty Images for BET)

J. Cole removed his Kendrick Lamar diss track “7 Minute Drill” from streaming services back in April. According to a writer at The Source, he was allegedly advised by his friend ScHoolboy Q to do so when the two were at the Dreamville Festival. Although it’s unclear what words the pair exchanged, Cole heeded Q’s advice and bowed out of the Kendrick-Drake beef. A full-length J. Cole collab with ScHoolboy Q could be an interesting event in hip-hop, likely producing something very unique.

Vince Staples: Rap Camp Member For Future Collab

Dreamville Records dropped their Revenge of the Dreamers III rap camp sessions back in July 2019. JID, J. Cole, and Vince Staples all jumped on a track together for it titled “Rembrandt…Run It Back.” Staples had been chosen as a select few to participate in the rap camp, which he fondly recalled during a Billboard interview: “It was really stress free and free for all fun.” Hearing Staples and Cole exchange verses on that compilation album track brings up the possibility of a future J. Cole collab. It would be interesting, to say the least.

Future: “Red Leather” Might Point To More

Only a couple of weeks after J. Cole removed “7 Minute Drill” from streaming services, he dropped the collab track “Red Leather” with Future and Metro Boomin. Interestingly, some listeners interpreted his verse on the track to be a diss against Drake, though Cole hasn’t confirmed any of this. It likely had nothing to do with the Toronto-based rapper, based on Cole’s public admission that diss tracks and beef are the “lamest and goofiest s***” at Dreamville Festival. After hearing “Red Leather,” fans are left wanting more from the Atlanta-born Future and Cole. A future full-length could be a genuinely unprecedented mixture of Southern rap energy.

Meek Mill: In the Studio On & Off With J. Cole

A little over a year ago, J. Cole and Meek Mill appeared on verses on the Drake collaboration track “I Can Never.” This isn’t the first time the pair have spent time together in a studio, either. The mixture of the Philadelphia-born Mill’s battle-rap-bred delivery and Cole’s southern-east hybrid production could prove to be a game changer. If Mill were to ever hop on a J. Cole collab, the results would be electrifying. And the possibility doesn’t seem too far-fetched, either. Previously Mill appeared as a featured artist alongside Cole on Wale’s “Black Grammys.” We can cross our fingers for a combo LP in the future.

André 3000: One Of J. Cole’s Inspirations

J. Cole has sampled André 3000’s tracks with Outkast “SpottieOttieDopalicious” and “Da Art of Storytellin’ (Pt. 1)” for his songs “Who Dat” and “Land of the Snakes,” respectively. It’s probably true that no southern hip-hop artists can fully escape Outkast’s influence—these are a couple of Cole’s clear nods to Outkast. Another interesting pairing was when André 3000 did a verse for the album version of Beyonce’s song “Party” and J. Cole replaced his verse with a new one for the video. Fans were eager to start comparing the two versions, which points to the kind of excitement that would swirl around a full-length collab. While André 3000 famously released the new age, ambient jazz album New Blue Sun in November 2023, and seems to be shying away from rap, a future J. Cole collab can still be hoped and wished for by fans.

Gunna “One Of Wun”: The Best Beats

On May 10, Gunna released his fifth studio album, One of Wun. The rapper’s latest body of work is a symphony of trap rhythms and melodic flows. It is also a testament to his evolution as one of contemporary Hip Hop’s most influential voices right now. With each new release, he attempts to push the boundaries of the genre, and this album is no exception. This is why it comes as no surprise that the project is aiming for a Top 10 debut.

Before One of Wun dropped, Gunna released two singles, giving listeners a taste of what was to come. Now that the album has finally arrived, many fans can’t get enough of it. Although it may not be regarded as the rapper’s magnum opus, it is certainly a worthy addition to his catalog. While Gunna delivers excellently, the production throughout this project equally stands out. From the first track to the last, the beats on One of Wun form the backbone of its sonic landscape. Here’s a list of the best ones on the album.

5. “Prada Dem” (ft. Offset)

Released as the lead single from the album, “Prada Dem” undeniably has one of the hardest beats on One of Wun. The track was co-produced by Aviator Keyyz, Evrgrn, and Fritz. It contains hard-hitting drums, a sick bassline, a hypnotic flute melody, snappy hi-hats, and everything good in between. Altogether, it has a very laidback vibe, but in an expensive way. Besides, whatever energy the beat may lack, Gunna and Offset more than make up for it with their verses. Both rappers slide effortlessly on the beat, spitting cold bars and delivering just what was needed. It’s no surprise this song was selected to be the lead single, considering just how hard it is.

4. “$$$” (ft. Normani)

One of the best things One of Wun gave us was another Gunna and Normani collab following “1:59.” Without a doubt, “$$$” is among the standout tracks on the album. The chemistry between the two performers is palpable, and they should certainly work together more. However, that’s not the only notable thing about this track. The production on “$$$” certainly stands out as well, and this is courtesy of Dunk Rock, Jacobsen, and Kenny Stuntin. These three producers combined their talents to create an earworm of a beat. It blends trap and R&B beautifully, and as expected, Normani and Gunna absolutely eat it up.

3. “One Of Wun”

Being the title track, there’s certainly a level of excellence expected from “One of Wun” and Gunna delivered. The rapper isn’t the only one who brought his A-game on the track, though. Que, Byrd, and Kenny Stuntin, the producers, turned up the heat with this one and left no prisoners. From the drums to the snaps, to the trippy background melody that plays throughout, this beat oozes minimalist trap excellence. Admittedly, there are not exactly any high points in the production as it is mostly looped. However, what the beat does, it does very well. It serves as the perfect sonic backdrop for Gunna to drop his lines, and it gives exactly what it’s meant to give.

2. “Let It Breathe” (ft. Roddy Ricch)

Gunna only featured four artists on One of Wun, and Roddy Ricch is one of the acts who makes a guest appearance. Fans of Ricch have been thirsty for a track from the rapper for quite some time. With “Let It Breathe,” he has finally given the people what they want, and he did it with style. Both Roddy Ricch and Gunna tear up the beat of “Let It Breathe,” which was produced by Evrgrn, Harrison Song, and Kenny Stuntin. Featuring melancholic keys, punchy drums, and an evocative bass, the trap beat is one of the best on this album.

1. “Time Reveals, Be Careful What You Wish For”

On One of Wun, it can be argued that Gunna saved the best for last. “Time Reveals, Be Careful What You Wish For” has one of the best performances by the rapper on the album. Additionally, the track has arguably the best beat on One of Wun, as well. The poignant trap song has the longest production credits on the album, with eight producers contributing. Aviator Keyyz, Gabe Lucas, Gray Toomey, Kristian Rose, LukasBL, Omar Grand, Segrate Martell Price, and Turbo all have production credits. The mellow production was tailored perfectly for Gunna to glide on and is an excellent closer to One of Wun.

Celebrities You Didn’t Know Are Battling PCOS

Many celebrities have openly discussed navigating Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). This ranges from diagnosis to managing diverse symptoms like lean PCOS without weight gain. This is a hormonal disorder affecting around 1 in 10 women of childbearing age, according to the Office on Women’s Health. Symptoms like irregular menstrual cycles, acne, excess hair growth, weight gain, and fertility issues can vary in severity from subtle signs to severe complications.

Further, PCOS is caused by hormonal imbalances with high androgen (male hormone) levels, insulin resistance, and genetics. It’s also reported that having a family member with PCOS increases one’s risk. Though incurable, symptoms can be managed via medications and lifestyle changes. Celebrities’ candid PCOS stories raise crucial awareness about this widely underdiagnosed yet common condition impacting 8 to 13 percent of reproductive-aged women globally, per the World Health Organization. Open conversations destigmatize PCOS, help others feel understood, and encourage symptom recognition and treatment.

Keke Palmer

After announcing her PCOS diagnosis in 2020, Keke Palmer has openly discussed her journey of coping with the hormonal disorder’s diverse symptoms. These include acne, excessive facial hair, weight fluctuations, irregular periods, and infertility concerns. In a candid interview with Tamron Hall, the actress revealed her severe acne and facial hair prompted her to “zero in” on PCOS as the root cause. She also explained dealing with such symptoms well past puberty despite trying medications like Accutane and dietary changes. Palmer learned PCOS manifests differently for everyone after her sister also struggled with it, especially during pregnancy.

It took examining her family’s history of diabetes and weight issues before the celebrity received her PCOS diagnosis. She says it was delayed for years despite her family’s efforts. Now, she hopes opening up empowers herself and others. She declared on Instagram, “My skin has made me sad many nights but I do not give up on myself … MY ACNE AINT NEVER STOPPED ME.”

Lea Michele

Actress Lea Michele has been candid about her journey with PCOS, opening up about being diagnosed after experiencing severe acne and fluctuating weight. “The minute she looked at me, she was like, ‘Oh, you have PCOS.’ It explained everything,” Michele told Health.com of her doctor’s assessment. The Glee star also suffered from “terrible skin” growing up. She revealed she used birth control to help manage it until going off the medication in her late 20s caused a resurgence of acne along with weight gain – classic PCOS symptoms.

Michele also acknowledged she is “very fortunate” that diet changes have allowed her to manage her PCOS. She also added that it isn’t as “intense” as it is in some cases. Yet, Michele shed light on the condition’s brutal potential side effects like cystic acne and significant weight struggles. “There are way more extreme versions of PCOS that women have a lot of difficulty with,” she empathized.

Victoria Monet

Singer Victoria Monét has candidly discussed the challenges of dealing with PCOS, revealing her honest perspective on weight fluctuations. The “We Might Be Falling in Love” artist took to Instagram Stories to share a performance photo, playfully commenting “Welp…I gained a lot of weight and it went a lot of places lol face, arms, tummy and most effectively…datassss.” Monét admitted she often feels “critical and frustrated” by PCOS-related weight gain, but tried to maintain an optimistic outlook, joking “at least now there’s two moons on the stage.”

Despite the lighthearted tone, her openness sheds light on the very real struggle many women face with hormonal conditions like PCOS impacting their bodies in various ways. By embracing her curves with humor, Monét normalizes these experiences while inspiring others to approach their own health journeys with self-compassion.

Victoria Beckham

While fiercely protective of her privacy, fashion icon Victoria Beckham has candidly discussed her personal battle with PCOS. The former Spice Girl went public with her diagnosis after struggling to conceive her youngest child, Harper Seven, amid irregular periods and infertility challenges. Beckham shed light on the intense pressures of expanding her family while in the spotlight. She admitted to Now magazine, “Every time I go out, someone asks if I’m pregnant.”

Initially deflecting with vague responses, she eventually opted for “brutal honesty” about undergoing fertility treatments due to PCOS. She continued, “I keep that big smile and say something like, ‘Actually, I’m struggling with infertility because of my PCOS, so my husband and I have been through several fertility treatments. No baby yet, but it’ll happen soon!’”

Daisy Ridley

Actress Daisy Ridley candidly addressed her battle as a celebrity with PCOS on Instagram. She shed light on the condition’s diverse symptoms like the severe acne she struggled with. The Star Wars star revealed she was first diagnosed with endometriosis at 15. She underwent surgery and consultations over eight years as the pelvic pain persisted. When her skin then became “THE WORST” despite trying various treatments, Ridley realized something more was going on. “Finally found out I have polycystic ovaries and that’s why it’s bad.”

Her journey involved cutting out dairy and sugar under a dermatologist’s guidance to manage hormonal acne. Through it all, Ridley advocated for others dealing with any health issues to persist in seeking specialist care, get thorough testing done, and pay close attention to their body’s needs without dismissing potential concerns. “From your head to the tips of your toes we only have one body, let us all make sure ours are working in top condition, and take help if it’s needed,” she empowered followers.

Former professional wrestler Nikki Bella has been open about her PCOS diagnosis and fears it would impact her ability to conceive. “I go to the doctor, I find out that I have very high testosterone and very low estrogen and I have PCOS. They told me that the day I would want to have babies, I probably would actually need help,” Bella revealed on her Total Bellas podcast. Moreover, doctors advised her to consider egg freezing at age 36 due to PCOS. Bella was resigned to needing fertility assistance until getting unexpectedly pregnant with now-husband Artem Chigvintsev.

“I was in the discussion of freezing my eggs. It was right around Halloween, a day or so after, [and Artem Chigvintsev and I had unprotected sex] because I’m like, ‘I can’t get pregnant. I need help,’” she candidly shared. Despite her PCOS struggles with symptoms like acne, weight fluctuations, and hair loss, leaving her “devastated” about her fertility, Bella defied the odds by giving birth to a son, Matteo, in July 2020 without medical intervention.

DJ Vlad’s Biggest Controversies

DJ Vlad is better known as the founder of VladTV. To many, he has established himself as a prominent figure in Hip Hop media. However, this sentiment isn’t unanimously shared. After all, DJ Vlad has had his fair share of controversial moments, led by his interviews, which many have found to be exploitative in nature.  Most recently, he’s been under intense fire for trying to get a Black Professor fired from Princeton, which many have attributed to white fragility. But a couple more controversies have surrounded DJ Vlad over the years.

His Interview Style

One of the primary criticisms directed at DJ Vlad revolves around his interview techniques. Numerous Hip Hop artists have publicly criticized DJ Vlad for his interview style, particularly his choice of questions. Some feel he crosses boundaries and exploits sensitive topics for clicks and views. Many of his questions are provocative, taking aim at crime, violence, and legal issues among predominantly Black artists. This approach has led to accusations that he sensationalizes serious issues for entertainment value.

Further, DJ Vlad employs a distinctive style of interview that many view as interrogative. For example, the New Jersey rapper Tsu Surf called him out on this, saying, “Realistically, there is such a thing as bait. You’re a baiter. Of course, you wouldn’t say, ‘I got anybody indicted,’ but you fish. You feel me? And some of my peers, some of the people that sat in this seat aren’t smart or witty enough to know when there is bait being swung their way, or when they are supposed to dip the bait.”

Suspected Involvement With Law Enforcement

Another contentious aspect of DJ Vlad’s career is suspicion about his cooperation with law enforcement. Several interviewees have raised concerns about statements made during interviews being used against them in legal proceedings. And if we’re being honest, his interview style doesn’t help his case. During discussions, guests sit in front of the camera. At the same time, Vlad, reportedly at another location, asks probing questions that can come across as highly incriminating and potentially suggestive of a setup.

This has given the platform a reputation for having a curse—the “Vlad Curse.” People have alleged that whoever Vlad interviews gets arrested. Some examples of artists include Keefe D, who was arrested for the murder of Tupac Shakur, and Ralo, who was apprehended and accused of running a cross-country drug operation. Speaking to RevoltTV about the curse, Vlad said he didn’t believe it to be true. “I mean, apart from the Keffe D situation, I’ve never heard of that actually happening,” he said. “Just to keep it 100. Like, I’ve never heard of our stuff actually being used, an interview being used against someone in a case that they actually talked about. In my rationale, for the Keefe D situation, he wrote a f*cking book.”

Weaponizing Whiteness

Most recently, DJ Vlad shared his thoughts on Kendrick Lamar’s new Drake diss track, “Not Like Us,” via X. He commented on the mix, suggesting potential improvements. In response, Morgan Jerkins, an author, editor, Princeton University professor, and famed producer Darkchild’s niece, advised against involvement in the viral conversation. She wrote: “You are WHITE. This is a BLACK FOLK AFFAIR.”

Vlad responded swiftly and firmly to the remark. He even went as far as tagging Princeton directly in his reply, which many have remarked was in extremely poor taste: “Wait, so a professor at @Princeton is telling me that a white person shouldn’t be allowed to voice their opinion about Hip Hop? Is that how you interact with your students?”

The exchange continued as Vlad threatened to contact Princeton, again tagging the university. He then insinuated that she might lose her job at Princeton if he followed this action. Although Vlad tried to backtrack on his tweets the next day, saying he was only defending himself, Jerkins pointed out that he had already contacted the university by tagging them. Even the author Marc Lamont Hill tried to call Vlad out for weaponizing his whiteness, but Vlad instead made scalding comments about Lamont losing his job. Altogether, this entire exchange felt like something out of a Karen playbook, as DJ Vlad allegedly weaponized his white fragility in an attempt to get a Black woman fired.

Employing The Use Of Click Bait Headlines

VladTV is also known for giving his videos certain titles that are sure to stir up trouble. In 2021, he titled an episode of his show, “Kal Dawson was in the car when 50 Cent Got Shot 9 Times, Kal Got Shot Also.” According to The Source, the video was focused on the harrowing incident where 50 Cent was shot multiple times. 50 Cent subsequently posted a screenshot of the video with the word “FRAUDULENT” put over the video. He also asked for the video to be taken down. “I want this video taken down now!” he said.

Accusations Of Being A Culture Vulture

DJ Vlad’s real name is Vladislav Lyubovny, and he is a white Ukrainian man. Therefore, his work in primarily Black culture has worked both for him and against him. As a result, Vlad has also been tagged as a “culture vulture.” Folks have accused him of preying on Black culture. Moreover, he mostly focuses on the negative side of Black artistry and communities.

Marvin Shadi Powers, the uncle of the late rapper Bankroll Fresh, was one of the first to label DJ Vlad a “culture vulture.” VladTV debuted an interview with No Plug, the individual accused of Bankroll’s murder, during which No Plug claimed the shooting was an act of self-defense. Soon after, Powers sent a passionate letter to Vlad, calling him out on his bias.

“You disrespectful culture vulture,” he began. “When I asked you to interview Bankroll PJ and how he was continuing the legacy, you had a subordinate call me to tell me you’re passing on PJ. He had just released a new single out, plus he’s starring in a new FX TV show (Atlanta) this fall with Childish Gambino, but no that was too positive, huh? Not enough Black-on-Black crime?”

Best Rap Albums & Songs Of April 2024

Every single month, HotNewHipHop takes a look at the best rap albums and songs of the last 30 days. Overall, a lot of amazing music was released throughout April. From R&B to rap, we got a whole lot of phenomenal projects, and even some great singles as well. However, there was also a rap feud between Drake and Kendrick Lamar that ultimately came to a head. Songs like “Push Ups” and “Euphoria” were dropped in the month of April, and it made for some entertaining fodder.

GloRillaEhhthang Ehhthang

One of the best rap albums of the last month was Ehhthang Ehhthang by GloRilla. Overall, this was a project that showcased Glo’s ability to slide over beats and crank out hits. In fact, it was a return to form of sorts for her. After a couple of duds, Glo came back with a vengeance and showed people just how fantastic of an artist she really is.

PartyNextDoor – P4

PartyNextDoor is an artist who has always given us some amazing R&B albums. He has a sound that helped shape the genre for an entire decade, and he is still writing at an extremely high level. His latest project P4 could very well be one of his best. Every single song is a vibe, and if you’re looking for that slow bedroom music, than this is most definitely going to be to your tastes.

RiTchie – Triple Digits [112]

Injury Reserve artist RiTchie delivered a phenomenal project this past month. Overall, Injury Reserve was known for a plethora of sounds, flows, and ideas. With this RiTchie project, we get more of that diversity, and it makes for a truly impressive listen. If you are someone who wants to listen to something a bit different, you should definitely put this on. Overall, a fantastic effort from a great artist.

Metro Boomin & FutureWe Still Don’t Trust You

Metro Boomin and Future will always be in consideration when best rap albums are being talked about. Last month, they delivered a banger with We Don’t Trust You. As for We Still Don’t Trust You, this is a phenomenal hybrid of rap and r&b. There are plenty of silky smooth tracks on here, with Metro getting creative with his production. Meanwhile, Future slides and dances all over the record, just like he always does.

Kendrick Lamar – Euphoria

Kendrick Lamar was a lot more scathing on “Meet The Grahams” and “Not Like Us.” However, “Euphoria” is a masterclass in being a real hater. Telling someone you hate the way they dress, walk, and talk is truly bold. Especially so when you start mocking their accent while also seemingly taking shots at their cat. “Euphoria” was a spectacle that kicked off one of the most historic weeks in hip-hop’s history and for that, we thank it.

Drake – Push Ups

A lot has happened since the release of “Push Ups.” However, you cannot deny the energy that Drake delivered on this cut. He dissed every single person who was out to get him, and he ultimately inspired Kendrick Lamar to drop four songs in the span of one week. Moreover, he gave us memorable lines that will be yelled at parties for years to come. Our sincere apologies to Metro Boomin for that one.

Metro Boomin & Future – Drink N Dance

Future and Metro Boomin are masters of cranking out hits. “Drink N Dance” off of We Still Don’t Trust You is incredibly catchy. It makes you want to do the things laid out in the track’s title, which means it is an immediate success. Future does these records so well at this point, and Metro’s production is otherworldly. While some may find the duo too formulaic, it doesn’t really matter if the music is undeniable.

Tommy Richman – Million Dollar Baby

Tommy Richman is having a huge moment right now. The underground artist out of VA has been dominating music discourse thanks to his mega-hit “Million Dollar Baby.” The snippet for this song had fans fiening for an official release. Now, the track has arrived and it is the second-biggest song in the world. In fact, by next week, it could be the biggest. The song has fans debating what genre this is, although we really don’t care. This slaps, and that is all that matters.

JT – Okay

JT has been having a huge moment as of late thanks to her solo career. Fans have been excited by her latest stream of singles, and this is yet another example of her talent. The song is viral, and overall, it has an extremely strong and memorable hook. Not to mention, it comes complete with a memorable music video that will help carry this track’s momentum forward.

GloRilla & Megan Thee Stallion – Wanna Be

GloRilla and Megan Thee Stallion gave us a viral challenge with this track, which automatically qualifies it for best of the month. Overall, both artists did their thing on this track. They are the masters of this kind of production, and they know how to get their fans excited. We just hope Meg and Glo team up again, especially with Meg’s new album coming soon.
