Bronny James is getting plenty of love from his new teammates on the Los Angeles Lakers’ G-League affiliate team. 21-year-old Armel Traore caught up with TMZ at LAX and in doing so, praised the son of NBA legend LeBron James. “He’s my guy,” the small forward said. “And I like everyone on the team, we’re a family.”
Of being in the G-League himself, Traore added: “I’m blessed to be here. Just wanna keep going, it’s just the start. Every time I get my chance in the big gym, I’m showing my stuff, and in the G League, play my game.” Traore signed a two-way contract with the South Bay Lakers after going undrafted in the 2024 NBA Draft. He’s from Créteil, France.

The Lakers selected Bronny with the 55th overall pick in the same draft in which Traore went unselected. After Bronny started out the season with the main team, head coach JJ Redick adjusted his standing to being a “fluid” member of the G-League. “Our plans are always fluid based on real time,” Redick told reporters, earlier this season, as caught by ESPN. “I believe we have two guys dressing today that as of yesterday we’re not dressing out. The plan for Bronny to move between the Lakers and South Bay has always been the plan since day one. [General manager] Rob [Pelinka] and I have talked about that. LeBron’s talked about that.”

The Los Angeles Lakers continued their unbeaten streak in NBA Cup competition with a 124-118 victory over the Utah Jazz in West Group B play, improving to 2-0 this season after a perfect 7-0 run to claim last year’s inaugural title.
Rookie sensation Dalton Knecht delivered a historic performance, dropping 37 points and tying the rookie record with nine three-pointers. Knecht’s scorching 75% shooting from the field and beyond the arc made him the fourth NBA rookie to achieve such efficiency while scoring 35+ points.
LeBron James and Anthony Davis provided crucial support, each posting 26-point double-doubles, with James dishing 12 assists and Davis grabbing 14 rebounds.
“He’s fearless,” said Lakers coach J.J. Reddick. “His shotmaking gets us going, it’s a real weapon for our group.”
Knecht’s breakout secured the Lakers’ sixth straight win and etched his name alongside Lakers legends as just the fifth rookie in franchise history to score 35+ points in a game. After his dazzling display, Knecht punctuated the moment with a Michael Jordan-esque shrug, signaling his arrival on the NBA stage.
At 39 years and 320 days old, LeBron James continues to defy Father Time. On Wednesday night, he made history again, breaking his own record as the oldest player to record three consecutive triple-doubles, leading the Los Angeles Lakers to a 128-123 win over the Memphis Grizzlies.
James posted 35 points, 12 rebounds, and 14 assists in the victory, helping the Lakers extend their win streak to three games and maintain a perfect 6-0 record at home this season. His performance also marked his fourth triple-double of the season and his fourth career three-game streak of triple-doubles, the last coming during the 2019-20 season, when the Lakers went on to win the Finals.
Anthony Davis also played a key role, adding 21 points and 14 rebounds, while rookie Dalton Knecht impressed with a perfect 5-for-5 shooting performance from beyond the arc, finishing with 19 points. Despite a strong showing from Memphis’ Jaren Jackson Jr., who scored 29 points and grabbed 7 rebounds, the Lakers rallied in the second half to secure the win.
Bronny James is facing even more complaints about nepotism after ESPN’s Brian Windhorst reported that the son of NBA star LeBron James won’t be traveling with the Los Angeles Lakers’ South Bay G League affiliate for away games. Windhorst discussed the move during an episode of the The Hoop Collective Podcast, on Wednesday.
“He’s only going to play in the South Bay Lakers’ home games. He’s only going to kind of be a part-time G League player, and he’s not getting on United Airlines to fly to these road games,” Windhorst revealed. He went on to describe it as “special treatment and nepotism” while criticizing the Lakers for the decision.

Lakers head coach JJ Redick previously described Bronny’s standing as a G-League member as “fluid” while speaking with reporters, last month. “Our plans are always fluid based on real time,” Redick said at the time, as caught by ESPN. “I believe we have two guys dressing today that as of yesterday we’re not dressing out. The plan for Bronny to move between the Lakers and South Bay has always been the plan since day one. [General manager] Rob [Pelinka] and I have talked about that. LeBron’s talked about that.”

Bronny James is going to be under a microscope from now on. He was already getting tons of attention for being LeBron James’ son, but now that he’s on the Lakers, things have been kicked up a notch. He’s going to be subject to the same scrutiny as his dad. Especially since the two of them will be on the same team. Bronny James was drafted on June 27, and sports media erupted a day later when it was revealed which jersey number he’ll be wearing on the court. Bronny will be rocking number “9.”
TMZ broke the news on June 28. Bronny James has worn a number of different numbers over the years. He rocked “0” when he played on Sierra Canyon, but that has already been claimed by Lakers star Jalen Hood-Schifino. He wore “6” during his time with the USC Trojans, but he was never going to be able to wear it in the NBA. The number “6” has been retired league wide, in honor of Boston Celtics legend Bill Russell. Bronny also shied away from rocking a number that his dad has worn, like “23.” He ultimately settled on “9,” which is a number he actually has tattooed on his body. Bronny James has a “999” behind his ear. The tattoo is a tribute to one of his favorite rappers, Juice WRLD.

TMZ also confirmed that Bronny James will have a “Jr.” on his jersey name. The outlet did not clarify whether LeBron James will have a “Sr.” added to his jersey, however. Regardless of what happens with naming conventions, the Lakers are thrilled to have both James’ on their team. Rob Pelinka, the Lakers vice president of basketball operations and general manager, issued a statement following the draft. “In the history of the NBA,” he wrote. “There’s never been a father and a son that have shared an NBA basketball court. And that feels like something that could be magical.”
Bronny James has yet to discuss the historical significance of his situation. His father, who is rarely at a loss for words, has also been quiet. Sources close to the Lakers legend claimed that he was “emotional” following the draft selection. The only direct acknowledgment of the father-son achievement has been on Bronny’s Twitter account. He posted of him and LeBron on the court together, with the caption: “Los Angeles Lakers.” It’s going to be a special season for LA fans.
