Drake & Kendrick Lamar Fans Debate “Family Matters” And How Well It’s Aged

No matter whose side you’re on, there are solid reasons for picking pretty much any track from the Kendrick Lamar and Drake battle as its best. Thanks to some recent viral discussions and trending takes, fans on Twitter are particularly debating the worth, longevity, impact, and quality of Drizzy’s “Family Matters,” his three-part onslaught and the longest cut out of any feud release. Many OVO fans are happy to see it getting the love it deserves, although K.Dot supporters quickly reminded them that the Toronto superstar was dealing with a different beast. Some pointed to the song’s lyrical achievements, the multi-faceted attacks at various rappers, or how the West Coast tried to claim victory quickly with “Not Like Us” and, of course, the “meet the grahams” surprise.

Furthermore, this Drake and Kendrick Lamar debate over “Family Matters” seems to have settled on the following assessment: it’s a great diss, but it wasn’t enough to take Kendrick down, for whatever reason. Many frustrated fans refuse to give the Compton lyricist his props and prefer to inflate the disses that the 6ix God had on his 7-minute record. Yet this discussion was also slightly ironic given that SZA and Kendrick’s “30 For 30” recently opened up more subliminal diss speculation.

Did “Family Matters” Age Well? Drake & Kendrick Lamar Fans Debate

As such, fans still have a lot of Kendrick Lamar and Drake material to talk about, but nothing quite matches up to that late April and early May stretch. Maybe die-hards want to reemphasize a musical focus amid contentious legal petitions and Internet narratives. We’d much rather see that at the forefront, even if it indulges in some revisionist battle history here and there. As great as “Family Matters” is, its context and actual impact in the moment works to its detriment, whether you agree with that sentiment or not.

Meanwhile, it seems like we will have more Drake music very soon, so fans will not have to reminisce on previous drops for much longer. This week, he once again teased his upcoming collab album with PARTYNEXTDOOR. As for Kendrick Lamar, his GNX rollout and upcoming performances continue his victory lap, but that trophy-raising doesn’t fully take away from the strength of “Family Matters” as a song.

The Joe Budden Podcast Thinks Drake’s “Family Matters” Would’ve Ended Any Other Battle

The Joe Budden Podcast often has pretty hot takes about Drake given its titular host, but no one can say that they don’t give due credit… Albeit a little late in some fans’ eyes. Moreover, the cohort was discussing the Lil Wayne and Kendrick Lamar Super Bowl situation during a recent episode, and they eventually circled around to how Drizzy might have had more shots in the tank had Kendrick Lamar not won the battle. Budden even assessed that “Family Matters” “ends the rest of y’all” in a rap beef, referring to other MCs. While he thought the Kendrick diss track was hard on impact, that’s even more clear in hindsight.

Still, it doesn’t change the notion that Kendrick Lamar’s “meet the grahams” and “Not Like Us” completely knocked the wind out of Drake’s “Family Matters.” The Joe Budden Podcast‘s conversation around this begins at around the 3:15-minute mark of the Twitter clip below. There’s still a debate over who “won” the beef, especially with the 6ix God’s UMG and Spotify petition in consideration. That’s another aspect that the podcast recently discussed with a wide range of interpretations.

The Joe Budden Podcast On Drake’s “Family Matters”

What’s more is that pretty much everything that Kendrick Lamar and Drake do will have folks reaching for disses and looking back on how their battle aged. A perfect recent example is the Compton lyricist’s feature on SZA’s SOS deluxe LANA, specifically on the track “30 For 30.” A lot of fans drew connections between some of his bars on the record and potential references to the OVO mogul, but it’s not clear cut enough to really make heads or tails of. After all, so many bars on there could be interpreted in so many different ways that a sole conclusion feels limited.

Meanwhile, with more Drake music coming soon, we’re sure that this practice will continue for the rest of his and Kendrick Lamar’s careers. Their new moves provide more context and retrospective knowledge regarding their diss tracks, so reevaluations and less reactionary assessments will unsurprisingly follow suit. But nothing will change the impact of when “Family Matters” and “meet the grahams” dropped within minutes of each other.

Lil Baby Breaks His Silence On Kendrick Lamar Name-Dropping Him On “Not Like Us”

Before his two 2025 albums, Lil Baby just underwent a big press run thanks to two revealing and compelling conversations. Specifically, one was with Lil Yachty on his A Safe Place podcast, and the other was with Charlamagne Tha God. As for the latter sit-down, The Breakfast Club‘s cohost asked the Atlanta rapper about Kendrick Lamar name-dropping him on his Drake diss “Not Like Us,” as Baby was one of a few Atlanta MCs that he accused Drizzy of “colonizing.”

“I ain’t really into, like, that side of hip-hop,” Lil Baby revealed concerning Kendrick Lamar’s
“Not Like Us” name-drop. “So I don’t really… You know. [Me and Drake have a] great relationship. Great relationship. It’s just with any situation, like, if you and him was arguing, why the hell you gon’ say me, you know? I don’t be having nothing to do with it. […] To me, like, rap and s**t be my work. It’s, like, I don’t want that type of s**t at work. Even with you saying, like, ‘What’s your relationship with Gunna?’ I ain’t in it for that type of s**t, you know what I’m saying? I ain’t on that.”

Lil Baby Reacts To Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us” Name-Drop

Furthermore, this is a particularly interesting answer because he doesn’t really take a side between Kendrick Lamar and Drake, although he mentions his great relationship with the latter. Moreover, it seems like Lil Baby really wants nothing to do with that battle, as it’s none of his business and he didn’t really ask for any smoke. But not everything that he discussed during this current press run has to do with hip-hop fare, as he also opened up to Lil Yachty about balancing the relationship between his children and the Internet.

Meanwhile, all these remarks from Lil Baby provide a lot of interesting context for his upcoming albums, and we wonder if these projects will expand on these ideas in any significant way. A lot happened around his name recently, whether that’s Young Thug’s freedom, their strong bond before and afterwards, and how that relates to Gunna beef speculation. We’ll see how all these narratives evolve and if any Atlanta artist will take a strong stance on “Not Like Us.”

Marlon Wayans Gives His Hilarious Breakdown Of The Kendrick Lamar & Drake Battle

Marlon Wayans recently stopped by Big Boy’s Neighborhood in Los Angeles and, among many other reflections, he assessed the Kendrick Lamar and Drake rap battle that dominated 2024. First off, he started with some praise for the 6ix God for taking on so many challengers. “But look how many people it took,” the entertainer remarked. “This was like he was Thanos and all the Avengers was coming after him. I got to give Drake his credit for standing toe to toe, like, ‘Nah, I got something for you, I got something for you, I got something.’ Kendrick just slipped through the cracks. Kendrick is just special and different and hit him from an angle that was like therapy. He hit him in the soul, you can’t beat that.”

Then, Marlon Wayans and Big Boy discussed the success of Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us” diss against Drake. Specifically, the radio host commented on all the previous rap beefs they’ve seen, whereas Wayans described the West Coast banger as a combination of many legendary diss tracks like “Ether” and “No Vaseline.” In addition, he commented on how the track “had Bloods crip-walking” to it.

Marlon Wayans Speaks On Kendrick Lamar Versus Drake

Furthermore, Marlon Wayans and Big Boy had a lot of praise for Kendrick Lamar, and also commented on how this is an amazing prelude to K.Dot’s Super Bowl halftime show. However, Wayans brought up an important point about how Kendrick’s artistry also owes itself to the pioneering of artists like Lil Wayne, who really wanted that halftime slot. “You see the evolution of things that was starting and how they’ve been applied to this generation,” he posited. Also, the actor expressed excitement for however Drake decides to follow up this saga.

Still, Marlon Wayans did have one criticism for Drake amid this Kendrick Lamar battle: his legal petition against Universal Music Group and Spotify. Nevertheless, he and Big Boy spoke on how Jay-Z lost to Nas and is still one of the GOATs, and on how Kendrick and Drizzy could still make up one day. On that note, we have to disagree. But we probably wouldn’t have predicted this beef before it exploded, so anything goes.

Drake Trolls Kendrick: Disses & Drama In Hip-Hop’s Top Feud

As the kerfuffle between Kendrick Lamar and Drake enters the legal system, it doesn’t mean that Aubrey Graham’s trolling has come to a halt. Despite being one of the top-selling artists in the world, the OVO head honcho has had quite a rough year. His war of words with K.Dot has dominated Hip Hop conversations since its lyrical launch in the Spring of 2024. Now, Drizzy has set off a controversial lawsuit against UMG regarding allegedly using illegal bots to boost the success of Lamar’s “Not Like Us.” Some found it surprising, considering the seemingly organic global sensation that the hit track became, but the 6 God doesn’t seem to be taking his L in stride.

Yet, there are those who don’t believe that Drake suffered a loss in this Rap beef. Granted, it will go down in Hip Hop history as one of the greatest battles between chart-topping artists to date, making it an ongoing hot topic across outlets, podcasts, and social media users looking to spark discussions. A point that no one could ignore is Graham’s incessant trolling of his opponent, taking to the internet to drop off photos, comments, gestures, and the like to poke the bear. They are moves that Lamar seemed to reference in his lyrics, but it hasn’t stopped Drake from using trolling to show Dot’s attacks don’t faze him. We’ve gathered just a handful of Drizzy’s attempts at prodding Kendrick during their beef, and some believe that, often, Champagne Papi is his own worst enemy.

Targeting Kendrick Lamar’s Manager

In Rap beef, some say anything goes and no one is safe, and Drake made sure to include not only Lamar’s family, but to troll the rapper’s manager, Anthony Selah. Back in April, Drake added a photo of Selah to his Instagram Story, where he mocked the entertainment executive. In between turtle emojis, he wrote, “Wonder is today the day,” seemingly referencing that Kendrick was taking too long issuing a response to a track. That wasn’t all—Drizzy popped back up the following day with another image of Selah. This time, it was a photo of the music manager holding two large OVO bags with the caption, “We getting in our bag or nah?” It looks like Lamar’s camp certainly was.

“They Have Nothing To Drop”

Although the tension between Drake and Kendrick didn’t begin in 2024, it indeed reached its peak this year. Two days after trolling Anthony Selah, DJ Akademiks reposted a message from L.A.’s REAL 92.3’s DJ Hed. The media personality didn’t take kindly to the way Drake was moving on the internet. “The Canadian ‘responded’ after over a decade of being dared to come outside,” Hed wrote. “Still has yet to officially claim said ‘response.’ He’s now taunting Ant in attempts to garner a reaction. If you enjoy microwave meals that’s on you. We prefer cooked food on this side.” Akademiks also caught a stray when DJ Hed told him “to post that.” Later, Drizzy took to trolling Hed by replying, “Use me as a ‘they have nothing to drop’ button,” egging on the opposition and their supporters.

Compton Community College ‘Fit

April was a busy month of trolling for Drake because a little over a week after prodding Selah and firing back at DJ Hed, another photo stirred controversy. The OVO star is known for posing on the ‘Gram, showing off his luxury fits, jewelry, and vacations. However, some believed he was throwing shade at Kendrick Lamar by rocking a Compton Community College sweatshirt, a school with which Dot has been actively involved for many years. Further, Lamar has always carried his hometown of Compton on his back throughout his career and activism.

This was a blatant dig, but it didn’t do much—other than that, in June 2024, in the throes of the Rap beef, Dot made a surprise appearance at Compton Community College. There, he delivered an inspiring commencement speech. “I wanted to come out here just to tell y’all how much I appreciate y’all. I’m proud of the city of Compton, I’m proud of Compton College, most importantly, I’m proud of the graduates out here,” said Lamar. “I know what it takes. You had a lot of hardship, not only in your house, in your communities, but most importantly, in yourself, and that’s the toughest thing to overcome. We still growing day by day, brick by brick, making sure we develop, not only in the physical form but in the spiritual as well.”

Tupac & Snoop A.I. Verses

One of the strangest parts of this Rap beef between these two heavy hitters had to be Drake’s “Taylor Made Freestyle.” The track perplexed listeners not only due to its A.I.-generated verses from Snoop Dogg and Tupac Shakur but also because many didn’t understand why Drake would think this was a flex. Additionally, it caught the attention of U.S. Senator Tom Tillis from North Carolina. Drizzy and Co. wanted to use the two West Coast, Los Angeles legends’ voices to mock Lamar, but it backfired across the board.

Later, Tupac’s estate emerged with a reported cease and desist letter, while Snoop shared a video on social media, evidently addressing the controversy. Moreover, Drake decided to remove the song from the internet, avoiding the legal drama. As far as Senator Tillis is concerned, he has long advocated for protecting entertainers’ likenesses and voices when addressing the future of A.I. Tillis played a portion of the A.I. verses from “Taylor Made Freestyle” in Congress. He punched the importance of lawmaking surrounding the topic. “So, we’ve got work to do and legislation addressing the misuse of digital replicas will have a multi-billion dollar implication,” said Senator Tillis. “We’ve got to get it under control.”

Wearing A Tupac Shirt Amid Beef Battle

Both Drake and Kendrick Lamar have been outspoken regarding their admiration of the late Tupac Shakur. Both have cited him as an influence, but for some, Dot has exemplified Pac’s character and talents. Yet, although Southern California wasn’t Shakur’s birthplace, he is long hailed as a West Coast G.O.A.T. from the Bay to L.A. This is felt throughout Hip Hop, as artists from California often call on Tupac as their inspiration. This includes Lamar, who never skips a beat to praise the activist, lyricist, and Hip Hop icon as a motivator in his career.

This is why, when in July, Drizzy posed, once again, on the ‘Gram to show off another gossip-worthy ‘fit. While he trolled Kendrick with the Compton Community College shirt the first time around, he returned with a Tupac look that made fans think he was subliminally targeting Lamar. Drake’s “Only God Can Judge Me” t-shirt wasn’t exactly subtle, especially considering his A.I. Tupac verse. Lamar mentioned Drake’s admiration of Pac during their battle on “Not Like Us.” He rhymed, “You think the Bay ‘gon let you disrespect Pac, n*gga / I think that Oakland show gon’ be your last stop, n*gga.”

Custaaaard!

Hip Hop exploded when Kendrick Lamar dropped his surprise GNX, an album hailed as a classic within 24 hours. One word has taken over social media timelines as his lyrics, cadence, and musicality continue to be dissected. On the Lefty Gunplay-assisted “TV Off,” Dot yells, “Mustaaaaard,” referencing famed L.A. producer DJ Mustard, who is also one of the primary producers of “Not Like Us.” The shout from Lamar on the “TV Off” has become a cultural phenomenon, with billion-dollar corporations like McDonalds even jumping in on the fun.

Drake has also seen the hype because he dropped in the comment section of LosPollosTV’s Livestream. The discussion was focused on comparing Drake’s Certified Lover Boy to Lamar’s GNX, and Drizzy slid in with a quick message: “CUSTAAAARRRRRD.” He kept things going by asking viewers to back up his trolling with, “We need a donut emoji in the chat custarrrrddddd.”

Fat Joe Commends The Massive Success Of The Kendrick Lamar & Drake Battle

2024 was the year in which all of us obsessed over the Kendrick Lamar and Drake beef, whether it was for five minutes or five-plus months. It was a massive hip-hop moment, so it’s only natural that the culture would speak on it at length. Fat Joe recently reflected on the battle’s overall success, impact, and longevity during his latest appearance on Big Boy’s Neighborhood. While he emphasized K.Dot’s dubs over the 6ix God’s, you can apply this to both.

“Yeah, um, if I’m being honest with you, I wasn’t watching it so closely at the beginning,” Fat Joe said of the Kendrick Lamar and Drake beef. “And then when ‘They Not Like Us’ – ‘They Not Like Us’ is a ‘Lean Back.’ It is a ‘Go, shawty!‘ You got the deal with that record for the next 50 years. There’s no way around it. He done f***ed around and made a hit. Nah, nah, nah, that’s a ‘You can find me In Da Club,’ like, ‘They not like us,’ that’s forever. It’s crazy. It’s also the energy, you know what I’m saying? You can’t dismiss the energy. It was coming up to that, boom!

Fat Joe Reflects On The Kendrick Lamar & Drake Battle

“And then, this new album’s incredible, too,” Fat Joe continued. “This new album is incredible. And, it’s just, it’s too much energy. This is like… You know, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, when I was in the game, they was selling 30 million records, right? Like, s**t I didn’t even understand. It felt like the stadium would break, right? I used to go with them. And then they had, like, groups like Mo Thugs, guys that we never heard, that were going, like, five platinum too because they was affiliated with Bone Thugs at the time of that energy.

“And so, that’s that energy Kendrick got right now,” Fat Joe concluded. “His cousin could come out and sell some s**t. [Baby Keem] was already in play, he’s known. Right now, Auntie Kendrick could come out, Auntie, spits ten bars and her s**t be multi-platinum right now. It’s just the energy.” Even though the victor earns the spoils of war, both warring MCs deserve some credit.

YouTuber Scru Face Jean Disses DJ Akademiks In New Song “wAKked out murals”

The Kendrick Lamar and Drake beef drew a line in the sand in hip-hop culture… Or it just provided a new angle for Internet creators to attack each other over. We got an example of both ramifications recently thanks to rapper and YouTuber Scru Face Jean dropping the “wAKked out murals” diss track against DJ Akademiks. For those unaware, Ak spoke about Jean during his livestream, responding to his criticism that the streamer seems to be purposefully obfuscating his loyalties to Drizzy. Scru Face chose to respond by rapping over K.Dot’s GNX intro “wacced out murals,” and it touched on a lot.

Moreover, Scru Face Jean’s big points concerned DJ Akademiks’ sexual assault allegations, his exploitation of violence in Chicago, how Drake never shows up for him despite his staunch support, and some general references and jokes about viral Ak moments or the type of content he makes. We can already hear the media personality ranting on his stream in response, downplaying the MC’s success or skills or what have you. The Kendrick Lamar debate really created a lot of enemies on social media, even if many of those conflicts – this included – are pretty small scale… For now.

Scru Face Jean’s DJ Akademiks Diss, “wAKked out murals”

Beyond Scru Face Jean’s disses, DJ Akademiks has his eye on some other Kendrick Lamar and Drake-related angles. For example, he recently claimed that Kendrick’s team allegedly confirmed to him that he actually meant to diss Andrew Schulz on “wacced out murals.” The comedian’s response to those perceived jabs caused a whole lot of controversy of their own, and Ak is alleging that this debacle sprouted by design and not by misinterpreted coincidence. But again, another small narrative in the grand scheme of things.

With all this in mind, we’ll see if DJ Akademiks responds to Scru Face Jean or if he just tosses “wAKked out murals” to the side. If you tally up all the discussions around Kendrick Lamar and Drake this year, you’ll notice that the superstars themselves haven’t really done much to push their narratives. Rather, it’s their fans who really flesh the discourse out, so we’d be interested in some more first-hand remarks. Don’t bet on those, though…

Charlamagne Tha God Has Another Warning For Kendrick Lamar About Toronto Tour Dates

Last week, Kendrick Lamar announced his co-headlining “Grand National” tour with SZA. The duo will kick things off with a performance in Minneapolis next April before performing at 18 other stadiums across North America. While their fans certainly can’t wait to catch them live, not everyone expects the tour to go off without a hitch. During a recent episode of his Brilliant Idiots podcast with Andrew Schulz, for example, Charlamagne Tha God issued a warning about his scheduled stop in Drake’s hometown of Toronto.

“All jokes aside, I don’t think that’s a good idea,” he said of Kendrick performing in Toronto. “The reason I don’t think it’s a good idea, cuz Drake has proven that he is willing to let his white side flourish in ways that we can’t even understand […] The petition that he has filed against UMG proves that.” Charlamagne didn’t stop there, however. He went on, speculating that Drake and his crew could allegedly set Kendrick up to face legal issues when he gets to Canada.

Charlamagne Doesn’t Think Kendrick Lamar Should Perform In Toronto

“I wouldn’t go into a country where this guy is so beloved,” he said. “It ain’t got nothing to do with no street sh*t. He the type of dude that, what I’m seeing now? They’ll put something in these guys’ luggage or some sh*t like that, or detain them for some d*mb sh*t.” This isn’t the first advice Charlamagne Tha God has had for Kendrick about the tour, as he issued a similar warning last week on The Breakfast Club.

“Do you realize Drake boosts the economy of Toronto? Do you realize he gave the city of Toronto an identity?” he asked at the time. Despite this feedback, Kendrick and SZA added a second show in Toronto last week, which will take place right before Father’s Day. Some perceived this as yet another jab at Drake’s parenting skills, though this is still unconfirmed.

DJ Akademiks Is Looking Compromised After His Spotify Wrapped Puts Kendrick Lamar Over Drake

While DJ Akademiks is probably the biggest Drake supporter in hip-hop media right now as far as his reach, he’s certainly not the most delusional, unreasonable, or biased OVO fan… Or Kendrick Lamar fan, for that matter. Still, he received a pretty fiery cooking on social media from both sides for having “Not Like Us” rank as his top song on his Spotify Wrapped, whereas “euphoria” landed at number three. Drizzy’s “Family Matters” and “Push Ups” landed at numbers four and five respectively, which is incredibly ironic considering all the smoke the media personality has for K.Dot. But how much does this really matter?

After all, haven’t we all had that experience reacting to our streaming service wrap-ups? We come across them and sometimes think, “How the heck did that song/artist make it so high?” In fact, DJ Akademiks had an explanation for why Kendrick Lamar landed as his number two artist behind only Drake and above Lil Durk, NBA YoungBoy, and Future. “Normally Kendrick Lamar wouldn’t sniff my spotify wrapped.. but he’s #2 on mine,” he tweeted. “The explanation for that is thats what happens when u beef with every1 favorite rapper.. we gotta listen to ur s**t too cuz of the beef. Beefing when its just musical competition helps both artists.”

DJ Akademiks Gets Cooked By Both Drake & Kendrick Lamar Fans For His Spotify Wrapped

However, Kendrick Lamar and Drake were not the only artists that DJ Akademiks was obsessed with this year. In fact, one of his previous artistic associations – which seemingly continues to this day – is with Playboi Carti, as he even appeared on his 2020 album Whole Lotta Red via a vocal sample from his livestream. Recently, the Opium boss even reposted a tweet from Ak to promote his upcoming album, one that fans still express skepticism over.

Meanwhile, beyond DJ Akademiks, the fallout of the Kendrick Lamar and Drake beef is still a huge part of public discussion around both artists. The former can’t even add a second Toronto show to his “Grand National” stadium tour with SZA due to high demand without fans connecting it to the battle. But who knows? Maybe there really will be another chapter when that concert rolls around.

Wack 100 Clarifies The Game’s Role In Kendrick Lamar & Drake Beef

It goes without saying that Kendrick Lamar and Drake’s viral lyrical battle had hip-hop fans and artists alike divided. Overall, most West Coast artists sided with Kendrick, excluding The Game who avoided picking a side altogether. He did go after Rick Ross in a scathing diss track, however, shortly after Ross dropped his own diss track about Drake called “Champagne Moments.” This indicated that he was leaning towards Drizzy, and left some listeners convinced he had turned his back on his hometown.

During a recent debate on Clubhouse, Wack 100 addressed this claim. According to him, The Game’s stance in the battle had more to do with his loyalty to Drake and less about where he’s from or his relationship with Kendrick. This appears to line up with what The Game has said about his role in the feud in the past. In June, for example, he described how his loyalty lies with Drake despite not having any personal beef with Kendrick.

Wack 100 Says The Game’s Loyalty Lies With Drake

“Drake is my n**ga, I f*ck with Drake … My loyalty is with muthaf**kas that’s loyal to me. Drizzy, he know what the f*ck it is when he see me,” he said at the time. “I think what [Kendrick] doing is amazing. What Drake doing is amazing. I think them n**gas just came out of one of the biggest hip-hop beefs ever and survived. Tupac and Biggie didn’t.” He continued, claiming that Drake and Kendrick’s feud was between them and that he didn’t want to get involved. “As far as the Kendrick and Drake sh*t,” he said. “That’s Kendrick and Drake sh*t. That sh*t ain’t for me man. I had to navigate myself through this sh*t. I been in this sh*t since 2003 being a solid a*s n**ga to everybody.”

This isn’t the first time Wack 100 has commented on Drake and Kendrick’s feud as of late, as earlier this week, he reacted to Drake taking legal action against UMG. He accuses the label of artificially boosting Kendrick’s diss track “Not Like Us,” and alleges that the release could have been prevented. Wack thinks this might be a result of jealousy on Drake’s part, however, amid the success of Kendrick’s new album GNX.
