1999 WRITE THE FUTURE & Jean Dawson Make Perfect Sense On “Fit Check Freestyle”

1999 WRITE THE FUTURE and Jean Dawson have been flying under a lot of people’s radars consistently. Both have been flourishing in the experimental side of hip-hop, as well as the alternative genre. Which is why their marriage here makes so much sense. For 1999’s latest single, they have decided to finally tap Jean Dawson for a collab called “fIT chECK fREEsTYle.”

The jack of all trades collective has been tearing it up with unique team-ups for the last several months now. It led to 1999 dropping their debut project hella. Rich Brian and the 88rising label have done some tremendous work getting this idea off the ground quickly and it led to some of our favorite songs of the year in 2023. As for Jean, he has continuously impressed, even this year, especially with his “New Age Crisis” single.

It seems that 1999 might be getting ready for a possible deluxe of hella, or just another project entirely. This is now their third single past the album, and they have worked with names like TiaCorine and Deb Never. “fIT chECK fREEsTYle” mixes a whole plethora of sounds and textures, from guitars, to drums, a trap instrumental, and everything in between. It is extremely progressive but it is not too much on the ears. It all flows seamlessly from one sound to the next.

What are your thoughts on this brand-new single “fIT chECK fREEsTYle” by 1999 WRITE THE FUTURE and Jean Dawson? Is this the best track both of them have put out as of late, why or why not? Quotable Lyrics:

Kicking the sun like it’s FIFA, moonwalk in Ibiza
I’m off the pillow, a dreamer, running up the hill screaming
How many times I tell y’all I ain’t tripping on s***?
I ain’t holding my tongue I ain’t faking no funk
That’s a heavy a** gun (Bow, bow, bow)
Now yo’ a** laying in the sun

Jean Dawson Goes Bi-Lingual On ‘Boohoo,’ A New Three-Song Collection That Teases More To Come

Jean Dawson is a bright young experimenter, trying things in multiple genres as he works his way towards the top. Now, he’s diving into multiple languages, too, on Boohoo, a new three-song collection he just dropped.

A press release describes the project as “a collection of tracks that serve as an overture for his upcoming full length album out later this year, painting a striking picture of what is to come with tracks ‘New Age Crisis,’ ‘Taste Like Metal,’ and his first full track in Spanish, ‘Divino Desmadre.’”

“New Age Crisis” debuted earlier this week (and was named BBC Radio 1’s “Hottest Record Of The Week,” even), and it’s an epic, gospel-inspired tune that packs a major wallop into under three minutes.

Listen to the new songs above and find the Boohoo cover art and tracklist below. Dawson is also joining Lil Yachty on a run of European tour dates starting in April, so find those shows below as well.

Jean Dawson And SZA Have Much Love For California On Their Duet, ‘No SZNs’

With his music, Jean Dawson seeks peace and equilibrium. At the age of 27, he’s accomplished quite a bit — from touring with Brockhampton, performing at Coachella and Lollapalooza, and garnering a large following with viral tracks through TikTok. Tonight (September 22), Dawson has shared “No SZNs” a collaboration with SZA which he’s been teasing since May.

On “No SZNs,” Dawson opens up detailing his complicated relationships with the individual seasons.

“I decided I don’t like fall / I decided summer doesn’t feel the same anymore / In winter, it makes me melt / Lose my shell / Mail myself overseas in the spring / And all my fears died in the summer,” sings Dawson on the song’s opening verse.

SZA then chimes in, singing of a special type of love that transcends all seasons. On the song’s chorus, the two show love to California, where they find peace in the stability and regularity of the climate.

“In the spring, I can’t hear a thing / All the birds and bees, nobody thinks / In the summertime, people off the brink / In California, we ain’t got no seasons / It’s all the same to me / ‘Cause in the heat, like to press repeat / Every day is every day,” they sing on the song’s chorus.

Who Is Opening Lil Yachty’s ‘The Field Trip Tour?’

Tesla” rapper Lil Yachty’s The Field Trip Tour is nearly here. Beginning on Thursday, September 21, he will embark on a 39-date excursion across the globe. With two massive legs, including a North American and European run, fans are curious about who is opening for the tour? Well, when The Field Trip Tour was initially announced in May, that was a mystery.

But, thanks to the updated promotional graphic shared on Lil Yachty’s official Instagram page, we now know that Nick Hakim, Jean Dawson, and Nala Sinephro will do the honors. Learn more about the supporting acts below.

Nick Hakim

The North American wing of The Field Trip Tour will solely feature “Happen” musician Nick Hakim as the opening act. Born to a Chilean mother and Peruvian father, Hakim uses his rich cultural references and the robust sounds of his hometown, Washington, DC, to operate outside the genre bounds. Since his move to Brooklyn, New York, Hakim has become a frontrunner in the region’s push for sonic fluidity. Last year, Hakim released his latest album, COMETA, a product of that creative exploration.

Jean Dawson

Recording artist Jean Dawson will pick up the supporting act mantle when The Field Trip Tour makes its way to Europe in November. Following in alignment with Lil Yachty’s journey into the musical fringes, Dawson joining him on the road makes sense. The musician’s past projects — Chaos Now*, Pixel Bath, Bath Sports — and his forthcoming collaboration with singer SZA are blends of his sonic interests. Dawson’s artistry is a journey similar to his move from his hometown of Tijuana, Mexico, Dawson to San Diego, California. As a biracial (Black and Mexican) act, Dawson aims to pay homage to each culture.

Nala Sinephro

Although Nala Sinephro will only join The Field Trip Tour for its stop in London, England, where she is currently based, her music is worth a listen. Most of the featured acts on the tour emphasize alternative elements in their work, but for Sinephro, it’s all about jazz. The Caribbean-Belgian multi-instrumentalist pushes the bounds of the genre. On her debut album, Space 1.8, which was shared in 2021, she fully displayed her technical abilities with the pedal harp, modular synthesizer, keyboards, and piano.

Jean Dawson And SZA Are Joining Forces For A Duet Titled ‘No SZNs’

The vault containing guest verses from “Snooze” singer SZA has gifted supporters with another gem. This time, one featuring her and multi-genre musician Jean Dawson, called “No SZNs,” will be going live on Friday, September 22.

“‘NO SZNS.’ (A duet by SZA & myself). 9/22/23. The official cover art by my favorite fine artist, Josh Brizuela,” wrote Dawson in a post on X (formerly Twitter). The cover art features a hand-drawn, faceless SZA silhouette sitting meditatively on top of a beast, seemingly symbolic of Dawson’s animalistic approach to his creative projects.

Fans chimed in, praising the artwork for its creativity. One even likened it to author Maurice Sendak’s characters in his children’s book Where The Wild Things Are.

Dawson initially teased the track in May on his official TikTok page. In the stanza shared online, you can hear him and SZA singing the lyrics, “In the spring, you can’t hear a thing / All the birds and bees (All the birds and bees) / Nobody think in the summertime (In the summertime) / People off the brink / In California, we ain’t got no seasons / All the same to me (All the same to me) / ‘Cause In the heat, like to press repeat / Every day is every day.”

Jean Dawson Continues To Push Boundaries With “DESTRUCTION FOR DUMMIES, PT. 2 JEAN DAWSON AS “NIGHTMARE”

Up-and-coming alternative phenom Jean Dawson picks up right where he left off a year ago with CHAOS NOW*. The Californian is back on the scene with another refreshing set of tracks on a three-song EP called “DESTRUCTION FOR DUMMIES”, PT. 2 JEAN DAWSON AS “NIGHTMARE.” The title is almost as long as the run time of this latest effort with it being just under the nine-minute mark. “NO SCOPE,” “X-RAY,” and “VEXED” are the song titles and they all provide a unique listening experience. The instrumentals are fairly minimal and add to the tone of the project.

The mood is sad, lonely, despondent, but also very beautiful in an odd way. For example, on “X-RAY,” he uses clever wordplay to refer to him feeling invisible to other people, similar to how an X-ray is a hollow look at a human skeleton. “You think you see me? Really? / No one near me / Think you feel me? ([?] I know) Really? (All I know) / What’s the feeling? (How’s he knowin’?) Is it thrilling? (No).”

Jean Is A Budding Star

This, along with the rest of his musical catalog is an adventure that continues to evolve. Jean has not hit the mainstream, but for fans, it might be better for it. His unique approach is what makes him so intriguing and he has not even been around for too long. In an interview with Zane Lowe, he had this to say about his creative process, “I think I’m a product of indecision, and I love that.” He continues, “Trying to bridge that gap of understanding is something I’ve tried to do actively, but at the same time not having a science to it and not being afraid to fall on my face.”

What are your thoughts on the EP, “DESTRUCTION FOR DUMMIES”, PT. 2 JEAN DAWSON AS “NIGHTMARE,” from Jean Dawson? Is he one of the best experimental artists in the world right now? Who would you like him to work with in the near future? We want to hear what you have to say, so be sure to put all of your thoughts in the comments section below. Jean Dawson Gave 50 Cent’s ‘Window Shopper’ An Alt-Rock Spin In Honor Of Black Music Month

Rock innovator Jean Dawson has shared an electrifying cover of a 50 Cent classic. Today (June 14), as part of a special Spotify Singles series honoring Black Music Month, Dawson covered 50’s 2005 hit single, “Window Shopper.”

Dawson’s cover of “Window Shopper” pays homage to 50, while giving it a rock-influenced spin of his own, complete with clashing percussion and plucky guitars.

He explained that he chose to cover “Window Shopper,” as 50’s name has been ubiquitous in a variety of genres.

“People fail to realize that he [50 Cent] was an innovator in being hyper-melodic while doing a format of music that was known for being more rhythmic,” said Dawson in a statement. “I have always seen him as being very punk rock.”

50 may posit to say the same thing about his own music. In a recent interview with Vulture, 50 said that he believed that at his peak, his music was able to unite a diverse bunch of people.

“It’s very rare that you can get these people to agree on stuff,” he said. “And one thing within entertainment culture is when it works, it feels like magic because the music comes on and they can agree to have a good time.”

Jean Dawson Embraces The Triality Of Man In The Chaotic ‘Three Heads’ Video

One would be hard pressed to put a label on Jean Dawson, who experiments with all types of music and embraces the many iterations of himself within. Dawson’s new video for “Three Heads” shows the artist quite literally appearing in three different forms on the screen, riding around recklessly in a car, and behind beds of fire. Though it may be difficult to determine who he really is, the music makes the puzzle solving worthwhile.

“Three Heads” arrives alongside Jean Dawson announcing his forthcoming album Chaos Now for October 7. Chaos Now will be the 26-year-old’s first offering since 2020’s Pixel Bath and will be an especially momentous occasion as he kicks off his debut headlining US tour in support of the album. The Los Angeles duo will be joining Dawson in his near month-long tour finishing up in LA on November 17.

Jean Dawson Sports A Full Face Cast In His Fully-Clothed ‘Porn Acting’ Video

From his “Turbo Radio” merch collection, to touring with hip-hop collective Brockhampton, and even collaborating with indie slacker rock legend Mac DeMarco, rising hip-hop star Jean Dawson is doing it all. His first release, Pixel Bath, let fans into Dawson’s world, and a subsequent documentary called Burnout was a peek into his creative process. Industry veterans like Travis Barker have already picked up on Dawson’s potential, and he shows no signs of slowing down in the near future.

The 26-year-old is half Mexican and half Black, and grew up in Tijuana, Mexico, giving him a particularly unique view on the world. Today, he’s dropping a new video for the song “Porn Acting,” a visual and song he explains in the following way: “We are all the same, we are all bags of flesh, tryna prove that we’re not as bad as we know we are.” The track starts off a little sing-songy, and quickly devolves into a more chaotic, heavier melody, as Dawson stars in the clip, moving from audience to stage in an abandoned movie theater, and sporting a full face cast throughout the clip. Check out the visual above and look out for Dawson’s live show while he supports Brockhampton on tour this year.

The trek kicks off in January in Norway and is followed by other European dates through to mid-February. Later that month, Brockhampton returns to North America for shows in February, March, and April. All dates will feature support from Jean Dawson, Paris Texas, and HVN.
