Victoria Monét’s Stylish ‘On My Mama’ Video Is Choreographed To Perfection And Downright Excellent

Victoria Monét’s long-awaited album Jaguar II is mere weeks from its scheduled release date. In just hours, the singer’s supporting The Jaguar Tour sold out across the country, and her stylish new video for the single “On My Mama” showed why fans were eager to grab their tickets. When the record was first shared in June, users online gushed over how she sampled Chalie Boy’s 2008 southern classic “I Look Good.”

So, in the video, Victoria was sure to feature a surprise cameo from the musician, her mother, and her sweet toddler daughter. But that is just the tip of the iceberg regarding what’s honored in the visual. There’s no part of the visual that doesn’t pay homage to Black Southern culture and entertainers. From the oversized white tees, Girbauds jeans, loose durags, letterman jackets, grills, and more, Victoria honors several fashion trends birthed in the South.

That intense attention to detail shows up in the downright excellent choreography cooked up by Sean Bankhead as the pair found a way to incorporate the nostalgic 2000s dance crazes the heel-toe, chicken head, walk it out, crank dat, swag surf, and more without being overly cheesy. Everyday Southern culture is also in the video, including tricked-out rides, Black D9 fraternities, and sororities syncretize strolls (line dances) originated at historically Black colleges and universities, and more.

During an interview with the BBC, the music discussed what motivated her to write the track, saying, “It was the first song I wrote after giving birth that I liked. And that I felt affirmed me and my identity as a beautiful woman. Still valuable. Still worthy.” But, honestly, speaking thanks to the video “On My Mama” has propelled far behind Victoria’s initial self-serving needs.

But it came while I was in a place of disbelief in what I was actually saying. Victoria Monét Is Finally Hitting The Road For ‘The Jaguar Tour’ Later This Year

Last month, Victoria Monét treated her fans to some exciting news: the official announcement of her long-awaited Jaguar II project. Excitement for the new project was heavily rooted in the success of its predecessor Jaguar which arrived in 2020. That body of work was released with nine songs and features from SG Lewis and Khalid and featured what was regarded as Monét’s best work to date. Now, Jaguar II will look to take that title, but that’s not all Monét has in store for fans this year.

Today, Monét announced The Jaguar Tour which kicks off later this summer, just a couple of weeks after the release of Jaguar II on August 25. The Jaguar Tour begins on September 6 in Detroit and runs for nearly two months before concluding on October 22 in Chicago.

Victoria Monét Finally Shared The Release Date And Artwork For Her Long-Awaited ‘Jaguar II’ Project

Three years ago, Victoria Monét took a huge step upward in her career with the release of her Jaguar project. Through nine songs, guest appearances from Khalid & SG Lewis, and highlights like “Moment” and “Ass Like That,” Monét showed off the polished and provocative sides of her artistry without error. In the end, Monét proved that she was worth attention to going forward in her career. Fans have been patiently waiting for a follow-up to that project, and at long last, we know when it will arrive.

In posts to her social media pages, Monét confirmed that her next project Jaguar II will arrive on August 25. A pre-save link of the project revealed that Jaguar II will be released with 11 songs including the previously released singles “Smoke” with Lucky Daye, “Party Girls” with Buju Banton, and “On My Mama.”

In an interview with Zane Lowe on Apple Music (per a press release) from back in May, Monét opened up about Jaguar II and what fans should expect from it:

You know what? I feel really lucky that, even from Jaguar Part One, I had planned for it to be a three-part project. So this album … this album is called Jaguar Part Two … so it really kind of breathes new life into Part One. If you’re just now catching onto me as an artist, you’ll know, it’s because it’s Part Two, that there was a Part One, so you may revisit it. And when I do tour this album… Hey, hey, hey. When I do tour this album, I will be doing songs from Part One, as well. So I feel like… because I’m still in this era, I get to still show love. It really became a result of observation of people’s attention span. And I know that, if people are just getting introduced to an artist, if they see a long list, a long album, they may get kind of overwhelmed, so I kind of always intended to microdose my style and my music to people in segments. But as I went on, I just kind of kept adding songs to those little segments. I know that there won’t be a Part Three anymore, because obviously, didn’t expect to take three years in between Part One and Part Two, or have a child in between.

Victoria Monét Shares Postive Affirmations For The Ladies On Her New Single, ‘On My Mama’

Victoria Monét continues to tease her upcoming album, Jaguar II. Tonight (June 16), she has shared a special confidence anthem for the ladies.

On her new single, “On My Mama,” Monét recites positive affirmations to herself over a smooth, jazzy beat, while encouraging her lady friends to do the same.

“I put that on my mama, on my hood, I look fly, I look good,” she songs on the song’s chorus, recalling a Texas hip-hop classic.

The chorus interpolates Chalie Boy’s “I Look Good,” then, shortly after, features a sample of the original song.

Over the course of the song, Monét encourages the listener to be their best selves — both inside and out.

“’On My Mama’ is the soundtrack to positive affirmations!” said Monét. “Singing the lyrics about yourself will change your frequency and elevate a positive mental state. The words speak not only to physical features but to a feeling too because I believe when you feel good, you look even better! Give yourself the words you need to hear because it’s true – you look good! There’s no one like you and that’s on ya mama. Enjoy being yourself witcha fine ass!”

You can listen to “On My Mama” above.

Victoria Monét And Lucky Daye Escape On A Sexy Excursion In Their New Video For ‘Smoke’

Victoria Monét is finally kicking off her Jaguar II era. Tonight, she has shared her new single, “Smoke,” a scorching collaboration with Lucky Daye.

The song itself is an ode to weed, rife with clever metaphors and allusions, demonstrating that both Monét and Lucky’s pen game remains untouchable. Accompanied by a beat produced by D’Mile, the song has all the makings of a sexy, funky, carefree anthem.

“Little fireworks that light up for me / In my fingertips I burn my worries / Do it somethin’ like that eight-track shorty / Keep it in rotation, it’s a celebration every time we smoke,” the two sing on the song’s chorus.

In the video, the two are seen in the desert, with Monét laying in a lawn chair, and Lucky cooking at the grill. The two later make an escape on motorcycle, and arrive to a motel. Toward the end of the video, Monét is seen pole dancing, as the camera zooms out, and reveals she is inside a glass bong, over which Lucky is seated.

According to Monét, fans can expect her upcoming album Jaguar II, to arrive soon. Jaguar II will mark her first release since signing to RCA Records.

“’Smoke’ is the beginning of a new era for me! Exhaling the old and inhaling the new.” said Monét in a statement. “I am also really happy that this release is with collaborators I consider family! I can’t wait to elevate. I want all the smoke!”
