J Cole Shares Two More Unreleased Kendrick Lamar Songs Via His “Inevitable” Series

Yesterday, December 2, J Cole dropped episode seven of his intriguing and insightful audio series, Inevitable. Sadly, we are just three installments away from wrapping this up, with the remaining ones arriving on December 5, December 9, and then December 12. “Born Sinner (Part II)” will be number eight, followed by a two-part breakdown of the 2014 Forest Hills Drive era. Given that this is being billed as “Season 1,” we should hopefully be learning more about his other projects. You have KOD, The Off-Season, and 4 Your Eyez Only to still learn more about. One of the big reasons why the finale of this season is going to be so bittersweet is because all of the nostalgic material Cole has given fans.

For example, all three of his earliest mixtapes are finally on streaming. The Come Up Mixtape Vol. 1, The Warm Up, and Friday Night Lights, were all put out. The last two especially have been highly desired projects of his, so receiving them all of these years later is a real special treat. Speaking of older material, the snippets between him and Kendrick Lamar have been a joy to hear for the first time.

J Cole & Kendrick Lamar Need To Mend Things Up ASAP

Last week, Cole was incredibly generous enough to share two of them. What’s more is that both of them were tracks that were going to make a collab project somewhere around 2010. We are still waiting on that like we are for the “Black Friday” releases. But given their up and down relationship, that’s most likely never going to happen. So, we are more than okay to just be able to hear what these two were working on back then.

One of them is produced by Washington D.C. beat maker and rapper Oddisee, and its head-nodding vibe. Lamar makes fun callbacks to the “Malice at the Palace,” the unhinged fight that broke out between players of the Indiana Pacers and Detroit Pistons, as well as fans. Then, on the longer two-minute teaser, it’s more of an ignorant and wavy banger with an atmospheric, wind chime-like instrumental. These just continue to show how fire this would have been had it seen the light of day. One day folks, one day.

J Cole Reveals Plans For Scrapped EP With Meek Mill And Big Sean

J Cole has done an exemplary job of getting his legacy in order. The rapper has been recounting his mixtapes and albums via the podcast Inevitable. Cole has treated fans to previews of unreleased songs, but the most compelling piece of information from the latest episode has to do with a project that never materialized. J Cole told listeners that he was in a creative groove with Meek Mill and Big Sean during the sessions for 2013’s Born Sinner. Such a groove, in fact, that he considered dropping a collaborative EP.

This was an astonishing revelation. J Cole had never mentioned plans for a hypothetical EP prior to the podcast, which makes it sound like a what if scenario from a blog era fan. It turns out that the EP nearly came to fruition, though, as all three artists were collaborating with each other throughout 2012-13. J Cole appeared on “24K of Gold” from Big Sean’s 2012 mixtape Detroit. Sean appeared on “Burn” from Meek Mill’s 2012 mixtape, Dreamchasers 2. The latter collab is especially notable, after listening to the Inevitable podcast episode.

J Cole Was Supposed To Be On Meek Mill’s “Burn”

J Cole told listeners that he was originally supposed to be on “Burn” alongside Sean and Meek. Things didn’t work out, and the song would up with the lone Sean feature. Cole was working on Born Sinner at the same time Detroit and Dreamchasers 2 were being made. The rapper claims that all three stars linked up at the home of No ID. The producer worked with Big Sean and J Cole numerous times over the years. It stands to reason he would have been involved in the collab EP. In the same podcast episode, J Cole admitted that he was pushed to hone his craft further by the albums that his peers were dropping at the time.

Kendrick Lamar’s debut album was chief among these. “When ‘Kendrick’s] album dropped, the journey got harder, the mountain got steeper,” Cole explained. “It was a feeling of surpassment… It was a clear feeling that he did exactly what I wanted to do [with The Sideline Story].” Cole’s candor continues to be one of the best parts of the Inevitable podcast. Especially when it comes to revelations about what could have been.

J. Cole Played A Pair Of Unreleased Kendrick Lamar Collaborations On ‘Inevitable’

It has been fascinating to see how differently Kendrick Lamar’s ostensible rivals Drake and J Cole have reacted to the Compton prophets’ devastating 2024 run. Their disparate approaches have varied wildly; while Drake apparently sought legal recourse for his public embarrassment (to the disappointment and disapproval of fans online), Cole has taken another, seemingly more apologetic tack. In the latest episode of his nostalgic “not-a-podcast” podcast Inevitable, J. Cole shared a pair of previously unreleased collaborations with Kendrick.

“Shock The World” and “Temptation” were recorded in 2010, around that time everyone thought they would release a joint mixtape together. Cole recounted how their meeting at a 2010 U-N-I release party (now, there is a name I haven’t heard in quite some time), which led to Cole giving K. Dot a few beats to mess around with — including the aforementioned titles and the 2011 Section.80 standout “HiiiPower.”

“When I played them for him, I was like, ‘Bro, you can have these if you want,’” Cole recalls. “I remember he said — and it always stuck with me ’cause I had never heard nobody say this to me before — he was looking at me like, ‘N****, are you sure you want to give me these?!’ I’m like, ‘Yeah, go ahead, take them.’ He was like, ‘Bro, you sleeping on yourself.’ It struck me because it was actually the stone-cold truth of my reality at that time. I was so focused on getting this unicorn hit for my album that I was actually sleeping on the shit that I did well.”

It seems inevitable that this will prompt another round of fan requests for that joint tape (which is, perhaps, Cole’s intention after he flubbed his chance to outrap Kendrick earlier this year), but it also seems equally unlikely that the GNX rapper will be taking requests for the foreseeable future.

J Cole Fans Celebrate The Long-Awaited Arrival Of His Mixtapes On Streaming Services

J Cole fans are elated on social media after the rapper added his debut mixtape, The Come Up, Vol. 1, to streaming services on Monday night, nearly two decades after its release. The move came after Cole shared a new audio series titled Inevitable, in which he reflects on the course of his career. Expectedly, the first episode sees him discuss the 2007 mixtape.

“So J. Cole is dropping podcast episodes about his old mixtapes while simultaneously re-releasing them on streaming services… thats genius,” one user posted on X (formerly Twitter). Another wrote: “YOU DON’T KNOW HOW LONG I’VE WAITED FOR J. COLE’S MIXTAPES TO GET ADDED TO STREAMING…” Other users theorized about the release of further mixtapes along with corresponding episodes. “Once J Cole puts Friday Night Lights on streaming platforms, it will be a holiday,” one fan wrote.

Cole announced his Inevitable audio series on Sunday night with a lengthy post on social media. While he says he was hesitant to put it out, he decided a younger version of himself would’ve loved to hear it from his favorite rapper. “I got so much clarity from it, and I understood more than ever the power of having a dream, the power of fueling that dream with strong vision, the magic that happens when we stay in alignment with God, and the darkness that can come in the times that we don’t,” he said of the experience.

J. Cole Is Taking Fans On An ‘Unfiltered Voyage’ With ‘Inevitable,’ The New ‘Limited Audio Series’ He Just Announced

J. Cole die-hards are in for a real treat: The rapper just announced Inevitable, which sounds like a new podcast, even if Cole isn’t specifically calling it that.

A synopsis for the show reads, “In this raw and reflective limited audio series, Jermaine Cole takes listeners on an unfiltered voyage through his life, career, and personal evolution, using both released and unreleased music to guide the story. Through conversation with Ibrahim Hamad and Scott Lazer, Season 1 finds Cole recounting his journey from his early days as a young, aspiring rapper to finally seeing his dreams become a reality, despite the many hurdles and pitfalls he faces along the way.”

Cole went into more depth in an Instagram post, writing:

“It’s hard to write a caption to describe what this is. I really don’t even know what to call it. We settled on calling it an ‘audio series’ but to me it plays like a movie in the form of a conversation.

First, me and Ib spent mad days talking to Scott, recapping the whole journey up to present day. Front to back. It was new, it was fun, it was emotional and more than anything, it was therapeutic.

After that Scott took the conversation and did his thing with it… then it was time to listen back. When I heard it with fresh ears, I was glued to the story as if it was somebody else’s. At times I could feel my adrenaline rush when hearing about the ups and the many downs and how it all played out in the end.

I got so much clarity from it, and I understood more than ever the power of having a dream, the power of fueling that dream with strong vision, the magic that happens when we stay in alignment with God, and the darkness that can come in the times that we don’t.

As the years of my career grew I found myself much more hesitant to share details of my life with the world. Even as I type this, I feel the last little bit of resistance. ‘You sure you want to do this?’ But if I was a younger version of myself, I know that I would get so much fuel from hearing this from somebody that went for theirs and ‘made it.’ For that reason, I think it’s worth sharing.

So, if you rocked with me at any point so far on my journey, I hope this will give you even more perspective and fill in a lot of blanks. If you have your own dream in life that you hope to achieve, in any field, I hope that this will feed your spirit, giving you confidence to believe in that dream and the encouragement to push through the tough times. To go for it even when you may be afraid to.

Please enjoy Season 1 of ‘Inevitable’

First episode available 11/18 @ 6pm ET.
