The Artist Formerly Known As Machine Gun Kelly Has Officially Changed His Stage Name

Machine Gun Kelly MGK 2024
Getty Image

A few months ago, it seemed like Machine Gun Kelly (real name Colson Baker) was toying with the idea of changing his performing name. Now, he has gone ahead and done it.

As E! News notes, as of February 29, the artist’s profiles on Spotify, Apple Music, Tidal, and YouTube all now say “mgk,” stylized in lower-case letters, and not “Machine Gun Kelly.” His social media handles on X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram are still @machinegunkelly at the moment, but his X name has been changed to “mgk,” while his Instagram name is currently “colson xx blonde don.”

Kelly hasn’t publicly explained the reason behind the name change. As aforementioned, though, the seed seems to have been planted a few months ago. In November 2023, MGK gave an interview at an F1 race and asked photographers to refer to him as just “Machine,” saying, “Instead of Machine Gun, can you just hit me with Machine next time?”

This follows comedians Chad & JT attending one of MGK’s concerts wielding a sign asking the performer to change his name, a stunt that caught MGK’s attention. The pair then explained (jokingly) that they felt his name encouraged machine guns.

At this point, though, we don’t know much about the reason behind MGK’s name change. That said, it’s a natural shift, since “MGK” was already a widely used nickname for him.

Firefly Music Festival Is Sadly Not Coming Back In 2024, And It’s Not Clear When The Beloved Fest Will Return

It is looking like another year of bad news for music lovers who were looking to attend the Firefly Music Festival in Dover, Delaware in 2024. Given that the festival didn’t take place last year either, as they were reportedly taking a break, there were questions about if it would ever return. Today (February 29), Firefly released a statement about what people can expect for now.

“Firefly Music Festival will not return in 2024,” they wrote. “We look forward to powering Firefly’s lights back on someday when the timing is right, but until then, The Woodlands will continue to host new music events for years to come. Keep on dancing, fam.”

Things seemed to have changed drastically since Firefly’s previous post, which was made in October 2022 and was an exciting confirmation that fans would get to see them in 2024. Because of this, fans on social media are upset and mourning the loss of a festival that they went to a bunch and loved.

Firefly’s traditional hosting spot at Dover’s The Woodlands will be the home to other festivals this year. Phish has appeared to be the ones taking things over, at least for 2024. The jam band announced that they’ll be hosting their new Mondegreen festival there.

Rico Nasty And Boys Noize Announce Their Joint EP ‘HVRDC0RE DR3AMZ’ With The Jumpy ‘ARINTINTIN’

Back in early 2020, Rico Nasty teamed up with German music producer Boys Noize to create the pulsating “Girl Crush.” They later reunited on Rico’s 2022 standalone single “Money” with Flo Milli, which sampled “We Want Some Pussy” by 2 Live Crew. The chemistry they developed through those collaborations continues with their new single, “ARINTINTIN.” The loopy, upbeat dance floor stomper is the first single from the duo’s upcoming joint EP, HARDC0RE DR3AMZ, which they announced today with the single’s release.

The eclectic EP will mash up Boys Noize’s throwback Euro-EDM style with Rico’s freewheeling Y2K aesthetics, the perfect combination for today’s nostalgic zeitgeist.

Between Rico and Boys Noize’s last collaboration, the iconoclastic Maryland rapper kept smashing through musical boundaries with releases like her Las Ruinas album, Missy Elliott-sampling single “Freak,” last spring’s Monster Energy Tour, which she headlined, and “Turn It Up.”

Rico took some time off last autumn, but it looks like she’s only come back more energized than ever. In the press release announcing her new project, she said, “Every session was so much fun and I’m sure that energy is felt across all of these tracks. One of my favorite songs on the project is… all of them. That’s why she is so short!! Talk to you later and see you guys soon.”

HARDC0RE DR3AMZ is out 3/29 via Sugar Trap/Atlantic Records/Big Beat.

The Best Vinyl Releases Of February 2024

vinyl
Uproxx

Anybody who thought the vinyl resurgence was just a fad was mistaken: The industry has experienced a legitimate revival. As a result, music fans are interested in physical media in ways they may not have if the decades-old medium hasn’t made a comeback. That doesn’t mean everybody is listening to just their parents’ old music, though. That’s part of it, sure, thanks to rereleases that present classic albums in new ways. A vital part of the renewed vinyl wave, though, is new projects being released as records, of which there are plenty.

Whatever you might be into, each month brings a new slew of vinyl releases that has something for everybody. Some stand out above the rest, naturally, so check out some of our favorite vinyl releases of February below.

Paul McCartney & Wings — Band On The Run (50th Anniversary Edition)

Band On The Run vinyl
UMe

The end of The Beatles was a sad moment for music, but the silver lining was that it led to Paul McCartney forming Wings, a band that enjoyed a beloved run of its own. The group’s defining third album, 1973’s Band On The Run, turned 50 recently, so now we have a new vinyl reissue of the album. The 2LP edition includes a treat for fans: an “Underdubbed” Mixes Edition of the album, of which McCartney himself explains, “This is Band On The Run in a way you’ve never heard before. When you are making a song and putting on additional parts, like an extra guitar, that’s an overdub. Well, this version of the album is the opposite, underdubbed.”

Amy Winehouse — Frank (Reissue)

Amy Winhouse Frank vinyl
UMe

We lost Amy Winehouse far too soon, but the pair of albums she left behind is special. It all started with Frank in 2003 and the album turned 20 years old recently. To celebrate, we now have the coolest-looking version of the album, a lovely new picture disc vinyl pressing.

The Who — Quadrophenia (Reissue) and The Who By Numbers (Reissue)

Who Quadrophenia
UMe

The Who were masters when it came to making music that rewards close listening. Now, the sonic details of two of the group’s finest albums, Quadrophenia and The Who By Numbers, can be enjoyed better than ever with these new vinyl reissues, which got a half-speed mastering for the occasion.

Get Quadrophenia here. Get The Who By Numbers here.

Issac Hayes — Hot Buttered Soul (Reissue)

isaac hayes vinyl
Craft Recordings

As part of their Small Batch vinyl series, Craft Recordings has come through with an audiophile-friendly version of an Isaac Hayes classic, which features lacquers cut from the original tapes. Ultimately, Craft proclaims this release to be “as close as the listener can get to the original recording.” As the name of the reissue series suggests, this isn’t one to take your time with, as it’s limited to only 3,000 copies. The overall packaging of the reissue is also stunning.

Idles — Tangk

Idles Tangk vinyl
Partisan

Uproxx’s Grant Sharples wrote of the latest album from UK rockers Idles, “The Bristol post-punk band Idles used to operate in one mode: loud, abrasive, and often furious. Their sheer volume was their main signifier, but now they’ve partially softened up, adding more subtlety to their anthemic tunes. On Tangk, their fifth record, the intensity remains, but rather than going in a purely punk direction, they make their noisy guitars and unrelenting drums a bit more rhythmic.”

If that sounds good to you, the band is selling the LP in a number of neat-colored vinyl editions.

John Coltrane — A Love Supreme (VMP Edition)

Coltrane Love Supreme vinyl
Vinyl Me, Please

Reissue kings Vinyl Me, Please have an impressive new edition of the John Coltrane classic A Love Supreme. It’s one for completionists: The 8LP box set features the album itself, as well as “every live and alternate take.” If you wanted the ultimate experience of one of jazz’s most iconic recordings, this is it.

Grandaddy — Blu Wav

Dangerbird Records

After some time away, Grandaddy has been back at it over the past few years. February yielded the indie favorites’ sixth album, Blu Wav, and the blue marble vinyl pressing is a gorgeous way to enjoy it.

MGMT — Loss Of Life

MGMT Loss Of Life vinyl
Mom + Pop

Similarly, MGMT also pressed their latest LP on some vibrant vinyl colors, like the tangerine version seen above. In her review of the project, Uproxx’s Carolyn Droke wrote, “As a whole, Loss Of Life shows MGMT have gone full circle and come back to their foundations as an indie band, both sonically by shedding the dark melodies of 2018’s Little Dark Age in favor of a more buoyant sound, and literally by signing to an independent record label.”

Usher — Coming Home

Usher Coming Home vinyl

Usher had a bigger February than anybody with his Super Bowl Halftime Show and his new album, Coming Home. The performance was the headline news, but if you’re not sleeping on the new LP, Usher has it available on slick clear vinyl.

Helado Negro — Phasor

Helado Negro Phasor
4AD

Helado Negro has been consistently rock-solid for over a decade now, busting out a new album usually at least every couple years since 2009. His eighth LP, Phasor, arrived earlier this month, and you have options in terms of vinyl aesthetics. There’s the “coke bottle translucent green” pressing pictured above, or a standard black if you’re more of a tried-and-true traditionalist.

Teezo Touchdown Teamed Up With A24 To Cover A Talking Heads Deep Cut For A ‘Stop Making Sense’ Re-Release

Last August, film nerd favorite indie distributor A24 announced it had acquired the rights to re-release the Talking Heads concert film, Stop Making Sense. Then, early this year, A24 revealed that a tribute album to the film — and the works of the quirky, inventive band’s expansive discography — called Everyone’s Getting Involved: A Tribute To Talking Heads’ Stop Making Sense was in the works (with a suitably David Byrne-ish title, no less). After sharing Paramore’s cover of “Burning Down The House” last month, the next release from the tribute is Teezo Touchdown’s cover of “Making Flippy Floppy.”

The Texas artist is a fitting choice, as his own music refuses categorization or simplification. An album cut from the Heads’ 1983 album Speaking In Tongues, “Making Flippy Floppy” is perhaps less well-known than tracks like “Once In A Lifetime” or “This Must Be the Place,” but its funky bassline and elastic groove translate well in Teezo’s hands. While it’s a relatively straightforward cover that doesn’t try to get too cheeky or experimental, Teezo’s enthusiasm for the material is clear in his full-throated delivery of each line.

Everyone’s Getting Involved: A Tribute To Talking Heads’ Stop Making Sense will mirror the original soundtrack album’s tracklist, with contributions from BADBADNOTGOOD, Blondshell, The Cavemen, Chicano Batman Feat. Money Mark, DJ Tunez, El Mató a un Policía Motorizado, Girl in Red, Jean Dawson, Kevin Abstract, The Linda Lindas, Lorde, Miley Cyrus, The National, and Toro y Moi

2024 looks like the year for cover projects inspired by films; the Bob Marley biopic One Love spawned its own covers EP with takes on Wailers classics from the likes of Leon Bridges, Daniel Caesar, and more.

A fun end-of-year tradition most music streaming services have is a recap of everything users listened to over the previous 12 months. The bummer about it, though, is that it only comes once a year. Starting in early 2024, though, Apple Music introduced a monthly version of its Replay feature, so users can get data on their listening habits year-round.

If you’re an Apple Music user who would like to know how to use the new monthly Replay, read on.

How To See Your Apple Music Recap For January 2024

The process is pretty simple: visit replay.music.apple.com, log in with your Apple ID, and there you go.

As for what the new Replay feature offers, an Apple Music support page explains:

  • “Get insights every month: Once you’re eligible, you can see your top songs, artists, and albums every month based on play count and time spent listening. And you can see any milestones you’ve reached listening to music.
  • See your year-end Replay: At the end of the calendar year, you can see your top songs, artists, albums, genres, playlists, and stations, along with play counts, totals, and the time that you’ve spent listening to them.
  • Play your year-end highlight reel: Celebrate your year in music with an audio and visual recap of the music that you listened to the most.
  • Share insights: Tap the Share button to share your personalized listening insights in a message and on social media.”

That page offers more detail beyond that, so check it out here to learn more.
