Village People’s Victor Willis Tells The Weeknd To ‘Lighten Up’ With His Grammys Criticism

Ever since his No. 1 album After Hours was snubbed of a 2020 Grammy Award, The Weeknd has not been shy about his criticism of The Recording Academy, even promising to boycott the organization going forward. But The Weeknd isn’t the first singer to publicly call out The Recording Academy for their problematic practices. Village People’s Victor Willis (aka the cop) has a long history of outing the Grammys’ discriminatory practices — and he’s now telling The Weeknd to “lighten up.”

Back in 2017, Willis was outspoken about his disdain for the Grammys. He even reportedly send a letter to The Recording Academy’s president claiming there were “secret committees” that existed to “override the decision of Grammy voters in the event the select committee does not like who the Grammy voter has chosen” for the biggest awards. Willis also cited the controversy around Adele beating out Beyonce in every major category that year. “If certain people at the Grammys don’t like who the voters have chosen,” he wrote, “a Grammy committee will simply override the voters and subsequently select who they think should win. Like Adele, maybe?”

But now, Willis has turned his attention to The Weeknd’s recent comments about the Recording Academy. Penning an open letter to The Weeknd on Facebook, Willis claimed The Weeknd stayed silent when he was “benefiting from those secret committees” in the past. The Village People singer also applauded the work of The Recording Academy’s interm CEO Harvey Mason Jr.:

“Pssst, ‘The Weeknd,’ lighten up on the Grammys already why don’t cha!? I know a thing or two about attacking the Grammys, and their once secret committees. I must say you’re not handling this in the spirit of Black protest of this important issue. You see, while Black artists like me were making honest complaints about the secret committees, you were busy racking up one Grammy after another under those secret committees.

I don’t recall you complaining about the secret committees when you were benefiting from those secret committees. But on the one occasion the secret committees didn’t benefit you, the Grammys are suddenly corrupt, and it’s off with their heads? Under the circumstances, you’re much too talented to be pouting about the Grammys. And it seems you’re out for blood despite the secret committees being eliminated. Negative.

This important American institution known as the Grammys has an African American in there (Harvey Mason) that’s making real, meaningful and historic changes that will likely benefit the music business for decades to come. Cut the brotha some slack!”

Young Dolph & Key Glock’s ‘A Goat & A Dolphin’ Video Keeps Things Simple

Young Dolph & Key Glock still aren’t stopping, even nearly two months after the release of their latest joint album Dum & Dummer 2. After putting out videos for “Aspen,” “Sleep With The Roaches,” “Penguins,” “Rain Rain,” and more, they keep the ball rolling today with the video for “A Goat & A Dolphin.”

The most prominent feature of this video is its female talent, this time in the form of a short-haired young woman in a bikini who twerks behind Key Glock as he raps. The scene switches for Dolph’s verses, adopting a red filter as the two rappers stand back-to-back in a smoky room, adding more women who catwalk through the scene, occasionally pausing to mug at the camera or briefly interact with the rappers.

In an era when most rappers drop a project and forget about it within a few weeks, Dolph and Glock’s commitment to bringing attention to their latest effort is commendable — and smart. They continue to run up the streaming numbers long after the album’s release, a rarity in an increasingly packed slate of big-name releases from major label artists who can afford to stretch their rollouts for months on end. With Dolph announcing his pending retirement last month, he’ll be leaving the game on an extremely high note and earning his time off.

Trae Tha Truth Shares Powerful New Single “Protect Our Women”

Trae Tha Truth is just as known for his community activism as he is his music. The Houston rapper has constantly used his platform to elevate his community, hence why he has his own day in the city. His music is a reflection of his activism in many ways including the release of his collaborative effort with Mysonne last year, If You’re Scared Stay Inside which captured much of the emotions of the protests for George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and countless others last year.

Trae offered a few singles in recent times and returned this week with his new single, “Protect Our Women.” The powerful single pays homage to Breonna Taylor and Black women across the world. Juice WRLD Photographer Chris Long Disputes Story Surrounding Rapper’s Death

Juice WRLD passed away on December 8, 2019, following an accidental drug overdose. The Chicago rapper reportedly suffered a fatal seizure after his private plane touched down in his hometown. It was previously reported that the rapper had swallowed a bunch of pills to hide them from the police, which was alerted that there were guns and drugs onboard. According to Chris Long, Juice’s photographer who was on the plane and caught a gun charge for him, that was not the case.

Taking to Twitter on Monday night, Chris Long told his followers that he was still having an extremely difficult time processing the death of his friend. “I can’t do this anymore. I give up,” he wrote on the platform. “Thanks for all the messages. I’m trying so hard. But if I can’t do it let’s make sure some things are clear. J did not swallow a bunch of pills because the police where [sic] at the airport. We gave no f*cks about them being there. He could have flushed them down the toilet if he cared. J was just hooked bad. The amount he took daily was absurd and he hid how much he really took from mostly everyone. Everyone around him tried really hard to get him to slow down. When he agreed to rehab it was because he wanted to lower his tolerance. He didn’t want to stop.”

This is consistent with what other members of Juice WRLD’s team have said about the artist’s drug consumption. Lil Bibby, Juice’s manager, previously said that the rapper had agreed to go to rehab after the people closest to him caught onto how much he was using.

“J was supposed to go to rehab that month,” confirmed Long. “We tried so hard to do positive things everyday like ride dirt bikes or paintball to keep busy and not do pills but every night once he hit the studio that was it. He loved it. I never thought he would od I was always scared of getting bad pressed pills so got test strips. I tested every batch he got, but no one knew how much he really took because he was hiding it. Once max and I really started counting how much he had and how fast he went though them.”

Chris says that he watched Juice WRLD die at his feet while he could do nothing to save him. “I had to look in his eyes while he was dying,” he said. He confirmed that they had placed the gun inside of Long’s bag because he had a clean record and didn’t mind taking the charge for the rapper.

It’s been nearly 23 years since Mos Def and Talib Kweli offered their collaborative album as Black Star but only recently have there been any sort of update regarding the project. As Kweli’s been embarking on his career as a podcaster, he and his Black Star partner yasiin bey joined Dave Chappelle for his newly launched podcast, The Midnight Miracle. The first two episodes dropped today and fans got a particular surprise when bey and Kweli unveiled a brand new single off of their forthcoming project. Though no title attached to it, the Madlib-produced single is floating around the internet under the title “Automatic.”

Madlib and Kweli recently discussed the project’s release with the producer claiming that the delay is currently on his end. He explained that he’s still trying to identify certain samples on the project in order to move forward with clearance.

“The only thing I’ve got to do is figure out what I used for some of the songs,” Madlib told Kweli on The People’s Champ podcast. “I’m the type of producer that just freestyles my beats. I don’t even really get what I’m doing, I just keep going, you know?”

Lil Duval Pitches ‘Verzuz’ Battle Between Boosie & Plies “In A Hood Club”

Verzuz has effectively taken the culture by storm. Conceived by industry heavyweights Timbaland and Swizz Beatz, the musical battle show gained popularity as individuals across America tuned in for new forms of entertainment in the pandemic. Originally strictly available through Instagram live, the popular series has gone on to be available on avenues like Triller and FITE.

Recent contenders that have gone hit for hit on the series include the girl group showdown between SWV and XScape, the 4/20 match between Method Man and Redman, and an Easter weekend battle between The Isley Brothers and Earth, Wind & Fire. Lil Duval is offering up his take on who should hit the stage next in a special battle featuring a slight change in formatting.

“Boosie and plies on Verzuz with me hosting in front of a live crowd in a hood club,” tweeted the comedian on Sunday (May 9). The suggested format for the battle has been unseen in Verzuz history, however, fans admitted it would be very fitting for the hood-favorite artists.

Of course, Verzuz usually teases promotional material for their next few battles a little bit ahead of its premiere date. While it’s unclear who is set to hit the stage next on the musical battle show, that hasn’t stopped people from teasing hypothetical battles between other members of the musical elite.

Charlamagne tha God recently ignited a conversation around who the winner of a hypothetical battle between Beyoncé and Rihanna would be. What’s your take on Lil Duval’s proposal?
