Jussie Smollett Sentenced to 150 Days in Cook County Jail & Probation for Hate Crime Hoax

Jussie Smollett returned to court for sentencing on Thursday (Mar 10). Previously found guilty of five of six charges, Smollett was facing years in prison as he entered Cook County courts Thursday afternoon. The proceedings stretched into the early Chicago evening, ultimately leading to Smollett spending his first night in jail.

According to ABC7Chicago, the courtroom was shocked as Smollett was sentenced to 150 days in Chicago’s Cook County Jail. The sentence, delivered by Judge James Linn, followed a lengthy speech that chronicled every action in the hoax while also calling the actor a narcissist, arrogant, and recalled his acts of perjury.

“You will spend the first 150 days of your sentence in the Cook County Jail, and that will start today. Right here, right now,” Judge Linn said.

In addition to the time in jail, Smollett is on probation for 30 months and will pay $120,000 in restitution to the City of Chicago and a $25,000 fine.

After the sentencing was delivered, Smollett addressed the courtroom:

“I am not suicidal. I am not suicidal! I am innocent! And I am not suicidal. If I did this, then it means that I stuck my fist in the fears of Black Americans in this country for 400 years and the fears of the LGBTQ community. Your honor, I respect you, and I respect the jury, but I did not do this, and I am not suicidal. And if anything happens to me when I go in there, I did not do it to myself! And you must all know that!”

“I have never seen in my entire career as an attorney, and none of the other attorneys here have ever seen a situation where a class 4 felony gets the same treatment as a violent offense,” said Smollett’s defense attorney Nenye Uche.

Chicago mayor Lori Lightfoot also issued a statement:

“The criminal conviction of Jussie Smollett by a jury of his peers and today’s sentencing should send a clear message to everyone in the City of Chicago that false claims and allegations will not be tolerated. The malicious and wholly fabricated claim made by Mr. Smollett resulted in over 1500 hours of police work that cost the City over $130,000 in police overtime. The City feels vindicated in today’s ruling that he is being held accountable and that we will appropriately receive restitution for his actions.”

Report: Drake Is The Most Streamed Artist This Year; YoungBoy Never Broke Again No.2

drake

It’s only been a little less than three months of 2022 and music consumers can’t get enough of Drake. So far this year, the 6 God is the most streamed artist in the country.

According to Chart Data, Drake’s music received 1.4 billion streams, barely edging out YoungBoy Never Broke Again 1.3 billion streams.

Katy Perry’s 1.2 billion streams came third, The Weeknd and Juice World are tied at 1.1 billion streams, and Kanye West came next with 840 million streams.

It seems as if everybody loved Drake’s Certified Lover Boy because it propelled him to the top of the streaming charts.

If Drake closes out the year as the top, this will be the second consecutive year as the most-streamed artist in the United States. Last year Drizzy finished with a total of 8.6 billion on-demand streams, meaning that one out of every 131 streams was a Drake song.

Earlier this year, Drake became the first Hip Hop artist to hit the 1 Billion mark on Spotify in 2022. Drake now joins the likes of The Weeknd, Bad Bunny, Taylor Swift, BTS, and Justin Bieber as the only artist to surpass 1 billion on Spotify this year.

Dapper Dan Collaborates With Gap For “Dap” Sweater

Dapper Dan Gap

The clothing brand Gap has been making major moves in the fashion industry. Already, they teamed up with Kanye West and Balenciaga, now they’re partnering up with Harlem’s fashion icon Dapper Dan.

Dapper Dan, who made his name creating his own luxury-label items using authentic pieces from Fendi, Louis Vuitton, and Gucci at his Harlem atelier in the ‘80s and ‘90s.

His goal is to apply that same creativity to Gap. His first piece of clothing will be the salmon-colored hoodie that reads, charmingly, “DAP” in the same Gap font.

“This is the first time Gap has ever modified our iconic heritage logo by personalizing it for this collaboration,” said Mary Alderete, global head of Gap marketing.

Although Dapper Dan has collaborated with designer brands such as Gucci, Gap has taken his career to new heights literally. Gap debuted the collaboration on 30-foot billboard, on 42nd Street in Times Square.

“Gap allows me to do something I’ve been wanting to do for a long time,” Dap said. “I have so many people who tell me stories, ‘Man, I used to walk by your store when you were in Harlem and I could never afford to buy anything from you. Then, fast-forward 25, 30 years later you’re with Gucci and I still can’t afford you.’ What Gap does for me is it gives me an opportunity to reach down to humanity and let them know that you know you can have a part of me.”

Dapper Dan and Gap’s new Dap hoodie was available for purchase at the price of $99, only slightly more than the average Gap arch-logo hoodie, but like all hyped fashion, the sweater immediately sold out shortly after its 4pm release.

BX Drill Rapper C Blu’s Gun Charge Moved To Juvenile Court, Judge Calls Calls Cops’ Testimony “Unreliable”

Screen Shot 2022 03 11 at 1.32.51 AM

Earlier this week, 16-year-old Camrin Williams aka C Blu, a NYC drill rapper, managed to slip through the cracks of the criminal justice system after a Bronx judge moved the young rapper’s case to family court, citing that an “unreliable” and “self serving” officer illegally searched the teen before he was arrested.

Bronx Supreme Court Justice Naita Sema made the transfer of the case from adult court to family/juvenile court after she made it clear that she saw no reason for the officers to search the teen.

‘There was absolutely zero reason for any of those officers to approach this individual,” Judge Semaj reportedly said. “They approached him, they detained him, they searched him, and no officer even bothered to come up with a halfway legitimate reason for any of that.”

Blu was initially charged as an adult with criminal possession of a weapon, second-degree assault and other weapons charges, but is now facing charges of shooting a police officer as a juvenile.

Blu was arrested on January 18 following a physical altercation in which 27-year-old Officer Kaseem Pennant was shot in the groin during the search. According to Judge Semaj, Williams did everything to cooperate with the officers.

“While there is no disputing the fact that Mr. Williams had a gun on him that night… He literally does everything you tell your child to do when they’re approached by cops. He literally kept his hands up. He literally tried to record to make sure there was proof. He answered questions he had no obligation to answer.”

The 16-year-old emcee, who is allegedly has ties to the Crips, used the $250,000 advance from his Interscope Records deal to post bail following the arrest. Williams is still on probation from a 2020 gun possession arrest.

Rather than a Bronx District Attorney, the city’s law department will now decide Williams’ fate and judge will finalize Blu’s case instead of a traditional jury.

Fat Joe Recounts Uniting BTNH And Biggie For “Notorious Thugs” Collaboration

Screen Shot 2022 03 11 at 12.24.13 AM

In a classic #ThrowbackThursday post on IG, BX legend Fat Joe posted a reflection of himself, Diddy, Lil Kim, Notorious B.I.G. and Bone Thugs N Harmony shortly before the timeless studio session between the King of New York and the Cleveland quartet.

Posted on the 25th anniversary of Christopher “Biggie Smalls” Wallace’s untimely death, Joe captioned the flick, “Fun fact i got a call from BIG and he said joe i need your boys BONE on a song,” adding, “I said say no more BONE N BIGGIE BONE N BIGGIE. I love you BIG we will never forget you 25 years later we will never forget THE KING OF NY.”

Produced by then Bad Boy Hitman and now reality star, Stevie J, the song “Notorious Thugs” on the Life After Death album had a hidden gem. In it, Biggie maintained that his beef with “You Know Who” was really not what everyone pumped it up to be. Which was cool because at the time Bone was known to be close to ‘Pac (who the statement was made about) and had performed on a song earlier.

Today In Hip Hop History: Scarface’s Fourth LP ‘The Untouchable’ Turns 25 Years Old!

On this day in Hip-Hop history, Geto Boys frontman and Texas legend Scarface released his fourth solo LP, The Untouchable. Released on Rap-A-Lot Records, this album debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 chart. It also peaked at #1 on the Top Hip-Hop/R&B and kept its spot for two weeks.

Although Scarface never really strayed away from his staple hardcore “Damn It Feels Good To Be A Gangster” subject matter and style of delivery, it’s apparent this album is influenced by the G-Funk sound made popular by Dr.Dre, Snoop Dogg, and Tha Dogg Pound.

The album’s most popular track “Smile” featuring 2Pac was released shortly after his murder and peaked at #12 on the Billboard Hot 100.
