On this date twenty-seven years ago, Big L dropped his debut and only full-length studio album Lifestylez Ov Da Poor And Dangerous, on Columbia Records.

Aside from, eloquently stated by The Source Magazine at the time, “[coming] with ill animated lyrics, combined with metaphors that stun; a combo sure to have suckas on the run,” Big L also ushered in two emcees that are very prominent in the culture today: a then-unknown Killa Cam and a semi-established Jay-Z.

Produced primarily by the legendary Lord Finesse with Showbiz and Buckwild on the help out, this was a Diggin’ In The Crates album. According to “Funky Technician” Lord Finesse, who had a hand in some of the album’s production, in an interview commemorating the album’s 15th anniversary, he said this about the posse track “8 Iz Enuff”, With that [song] L just thought he had to do a track with the rappers from his hood. And he definitely wanted to put on [those particular emcees]… We looking like, ‘How you gonna put eight niggas on one track?’ [And he was like], ‘Don’t worry, I got this.’”

He definitely had it too.

Unfortunately, Lifestylez Ov Da Poor And Dangerous would be the only album released by L in his life as he was fatally shot in Harlem in 1999.

Salute to Big L kaka Lamont Coleman(RIP), Lord Finesse, Jay-Z, Cam’ron, Grand Daddy I, U, and everyone else who helped make this album a piece of Hip Hop history!

“Sam and I go back in the theater, the Goodman Theatre,” Washington said, according to PEOPLE. “We worked together even before that, at the Negro Ensemble Company. We did a pretty good play called The Soldier’s Play that became great movie, A Soldier’s Story. Wasn’t as good as it would’ve been had Sam been in it, but that’s for another day.”

“Who knows, that little kid from Chattanooga, Tennessee, watching movies, wishing he could be here to get the votes of people who run an organization like this that says, ‘Hey, I deserve something like this,’ thank you, so much,” Jackson said.

Benny The Butcher Claims Freddie Gibbs Begged To Do An Album With Him Amid Beef

benny the butcher freddie gibbs beef

Benny the Butcher and Freddie Gibbs have been beefing for a couple of years. Nobody really knows what started the beef, but the two have not collaborated since the track “One Way Flight” off of Benny’s Hit-Boy produced album Burden Of Proof.

On Sunday, the Griselda rapper took to Twitter where he shot off a subliminal tweet directed at Gibbs, saying that the Gary MC begged him to do an album together.

“How can u hate on a nigga u begged to do an album with…” Benny wrote. “TT4 OUT NOW !!!” he added.

Gibbs responded to Benny’s tweets with a series of posts on his Instagram story. “Niggaz whole marketing plan for they album is to beef with Freddie Gibbs. That’s cute,” Gibbs wrote adding a kissing face and laughing emoji. “In the second post, Gibbs said, “If U opened up for me before just be grateful.”

He followed the previous post by taking a dig at Benny saying he couldn’t get his Drake feature cleared. “Next time just get the Drake verse cleared and u ain’t gotta do all this for promo. I’m out.” In his final post, Gibbs wrote “Why would I beg a nigga to work with me when he do less than me?”

Hopefully the two squash their beef soon and get back to giving us great tracks like “One Way Flight” and “Frank Lucas.”

The Internet Reacts To Will Smith Slapping Chris Rock On Stage During 2022 Academy Awards Ceremony

will smith slapping chris rock

The 2022 Academy Awards will go down as one of the most shocking and confusing nights in entertainment history. Not because of a mix-up, stage fail, or because the wrong winner was announced, but because Will Smith slapped Chris Rock on stage.

The incident happened after Rock made a joke about Jada Pinkett-Smith’s hair, calling her G.I. Jane.

“Will Smith just smacked the shit out of me,” Rock said after Smith slapped him. When Will Smith got back to his seat, he angrily repeated “Keep my wife’s name out your f*cking mouth” to Rock. Rock replied saying “Wow dude, it was a G.I. Jane joke.” Smith didn’t want to hear it and insisted that Rock continue to keep Jada’s name out of his mouth.

After the incident, actors such as Denzel Washington, Tyler Perry and even Bradley Cooper helped to calm Smith down. Even people watching at home could tell there was a shift in energy after the incident. Will later won the award for Best Actor just moments later for his performance as Richard Williams in King Richard. He started his speech off by saying where he started off by saying “Richard Williams was a fierce defender of his family…”

People were shocked when Will slapped Chris. Many thought it was a part of the script until it was obvious that it was not. Of course, the internet remains undefeated as one side poked jokes at the incident and the other side praised Will for defending Jada, who has admitted that she struggles with alopecia.

Screen Shot 2022 03 26 at 2.42.11 PM

On this date in 1996, Busta Rhymes did the inevitable and released his highly anticipated solo album The Coming on Elektra Records.

Even though the Leaders Of The New School were a celebrated group within the culture, it was always suggested that Busta drop a solo project minus LONS. With production form the likes of Easy Mo Bee, DJ Scratch and even Busta Buss himself, The Coming served as a introductory project of what was to come from the one of the greatest lyricists in the game.Appearance from the likes of the late Notorious B.I.G., A Tribe Called Quest(who first introduced Busta on “Scenario”), Heave d and The Boyz and Mary J. Blige.

The 13 track full length studio album was chock full of hits including “Everything Remains Raw”, the Zhane-powered “It’s A Party” and the album’s lead single “Woo Hah!! Got You All In Check”. This album also introduces Busta’s own “Flipmode Squad” consisting of Lord Have Mercy, Rampage, Rah Digga and Spliff Star.

Salute to Busta on his premiere project; definitely an important piece of Hip Hop history!

Dr. Mutulu Shakur Provides Health and Legal Update While Battling Stage 3 Bone Marrow Cancer

mutulu victorville 1024x694 1

Dr. Mutulu Shakur is battling stage 3 bone marrow cancer from prison. Shakur, the Black liberation icon and stepfather of late Hip-Hop legend Tupac Shakur, has been behind bars for three decades, despite being able to be released in 2016. An update to his official Instagram account, provide his most recent health and legal statuses:

First, we thank everyone for the outpouring of support for Dr. Shakur as he continues to battle stage 3 bone marrow cancer from prison.
He did have a stem cell transplant, but then experienced an early relapse necessitating a new and highly dangerous chemotherapy that still only delays the cancer’s progress. Leaving him in prison while the chemotherapy suppresses his immune system places his life in further jeopardy — Dr. Shakur’s immediate compassionate release is the only humane response.

Despite all this, in January 2022, he was denied compassionate release for the third time by the Central office of the Federal Bureau of Prison! He is currently recovering from his third infection with COVID-19, and consequent COVID pneumonia.

Earlier this month, Dr. Shakur won a significant legal victory. For years, he has been litigating a habeas corpus in the U.S. District Court of California, challenging the U.S Parole Commission’s 2016 decision denying him mandatory parole. In denying parole, the Parole Commission relied on a disciplinary ticket Dr. Shakur received for making a telephone call to an approved phone number, where a professor put him on speakerphone to talk to her class. The court found that Dr. Shakur’s conduct had not violated the regulation and ruled that it was a due process violation for the Parole Commission to rely on this incident in its decision to deny parole. The court ordered that he receive the “good time” lost for this incident (27 days) and ordered a new mandatory parole hearing where the Parole Commission cannot consider this incident.

Family and Friends of Mutulu Shakur and the legal team continue to double down on our efforts. If you are in contact with any members of Congress who may be willing to support Dr. Shakur’s release, reach out to us at [email protected] so that we can connect. We are asking that everyone continue to sign and share the online petition to help us reach 75,000 signatures.

The link to reach the petition is available here. You can see the full statement here.
