Kel Mitchell From Good Burger Displays His Devotion with New Song “Blessed Mode”

Kel Mitchell

Kel Mitchell has taken on a new role since starring in Nickelodeon’s iconic movie Good Burger. The two-time Emmy Award-nominated actor, producer, and comedian has now dedicated his life to God and has become a minister and an author. Now he’s taking on a new role as a gospel Hip Hop artist.

In an effort to display his devotion to the Lord, Kel is releasing a new single “Blessed Mode,” in follow up to his book BLESSED MODE: 90 Days to Level Up Your Faith.

This won’t be Kel’s first stab at music. Kel grew up in Chicago where he participated in rap battles as a kid with the likes of Common, had a cameo in music videos like Kanye West’s All Falls Down.

Kel shared exclusively with The Source, “My sister worked at Metro Music, a popular music store on the south side of Chicago. One day Common came to the store and I was able to battle him, but I rapped like Kriss Kross at the time.”

The All That actor added, “I love Hip Hop. Before I did theater, Hip Hop saved my life. I loved graffiti, I was on a break dance crew, and I’m so excited to be back representing God in music.”

“Blessed Mode” will be available on all music streaming platforms on March 11.

Today in Hip Hop History: The Roots Released Their Fourth LP ‘Things Fall Apart’ 23 Years Ago

On this day in Hip Hop history, The Roots released their fourth studio album Things Fall Apart. This project is considered by many publications at the Roots “breakthrough” album, gaining them coverage in major publications and expanding their fan base. It also came at a time when the whole Soulquarian collective (D’Angelo, Erykah Badu, Common, The Roots, Talib Kweli, Most Def, and J Dilla) began to come out the gate with hit album after hit album (some titles including Mama’s Gun, Like Water for Chocolates, and Voodoo).

This album was the group’s first project to sell 500,000 copies. The album was eternally stamped at the 2000 Grammy Awards when the album’s hit single You Got Me featuring Erykah Badu and Eve (then known as Eve of Destruction) won Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group. The album was also nominated for Best Rap Album but was outvoted by Eminem’s The Slim Shady EP, which coincidentally was released the same day.

The album takes its title from the Chinua Achebe novel by the same name. Much like the novel, this album focuses on themes that may seem dismal to some but every day to others. An apparent theme of the album is the uphill battle that people of color, specifically Black Americans, deal with in their day-to-day life. This project synthesized a tone exemplified in Harlem Renaissance era poetry with the street styling specific to Philly rap.

The composition of this album is more than noteworthy. The combination of jazz, swing, soul, and Hip Hop was able to bring the lyrics to life and give each song a full body. The Roots instrumentation on this project is groundbreaking.

The consciousness of this album starts with the cover. The group felt that not one but five covers were best at describing the message they were trying to convey. Each of them represents the result of “things falling apart” throughout the world

1.”Woman Running” by Unknown was shot in Bedford-Stuyvesant projects in Brooklyn and captures two teenagers evading police brutality during a riot in the 1960s.

2.”Ace in Hand” by Bettman was shot on April 15, 1931 and captures an assassinated mob boss in Coney Island, Brooklyn, New York.

roots 3

3.”The Church Bombing” by Unknown depicts a church that was set ablaze as a for of hate protest against those that worship there.

roots 4

4.”Baby in the Rubble” by H.S. Wong was shot on August 28th, 1937 shows a child screaming among rumble caused by Japanese warfare.

5.”Crying Child” by Peter Turnley was shot on August 1st, 1992 and shows a Somalian child crying due to their current living situation.

After this album, The Roots went on to celebrate ridiculous success. They released 10 more albums and won two more Grammy’s. Their commercial success has continuous risen over the years. In 2009 The Roots became the official band of Late Night with Jimmy Fallon and when we became the host of The Tonight Show in February 2014 he took them along and made them the house band on that broadcast where they could now be seen every night.

Today in Hip-Hop History: Biz Markie Dropped His Debut Album ‘Goin’ Off’ 34 Years Ago

On this date in the infamous year of 1988, the “Human Orchestra” Biz Markie released his debut full-length album Goin’ Off on Cold Chillin’/Warner Brothers Records.

Produced exclusively by legendary Queensbridge superproducer DJ Marley Marl, Goin Off introduced singer TJ Swan and a then-unknown rapper by the name of Big Daddy Kane. The Brooklyn protege of Biz Mark also wrote the first five songs on the album and was even the subject on the second verse of one of Biz’s most famous songs from the ten-track album, “Vapors”.

Forget the fact that he was a member of the World Famous Juice Crew. With several timeless gems from the album including “Nobody Beats The Biz”, “The Biz Dance” and “Make The Music With Your Mouth”, Biz Mark solidified his position in the game single-handedly with his debut release. Back in 1998, this album was even listed by The Source’s Mind Squad as one of The Best 100 Rap Albums of all time.

Salute to the Biz, Marley, TJ Swan, Kane, Shante, Fly Ty and the rest of the Juice Crew and the Cold Chillin’ crew who made this album a piece of Hip Hop history!

SoundCloud has announced a partnership with Solid Foundation, the management and creative services division of QC Media Holdings, which is owned and run by music industry veterans Kevin “Coach K” Lee and Pierre “P” Thomas. SoundCloud, the world’s largest A&R resource, and Solid Foundation, a full-service artist management firm, have partnered to uncover fresh talent and reinvent artist partnerships by providing bespoke resources, tools, and access to creatives.

QC Media invested in SoundCloud as part of the joint venture, and as a result, Lee, Thomas, and their Atlanta-based Solid Foundation artist management team will collaborate with the company to identify, invest in, and promote the careers of SoundCloud musicians. This groundbreaking agreement will bring together significant industry knowledge, proprietary data & insights, and resources to create custom A&R programs for selected artists that include development, distribution, marketing, and artist services.

“Coach K and P are two of the most influential voices in music, having identified, developed and grown some of the most successful hip-hop acts of our time,” said Eliah Seton, President of SoundCloud. “With this deal, we’re bringing together SoundCloud, the largest A&R source on the planet, with the creative genius of Coach and P. We are excited to partner with them in this innovative way as together we amplify the voices of who’s next in music.”

Lee and Thomas have molded the careers of some of today’s most popular singers, including Young Jeezy and Gucci Mane, before founding Quality Control Music, where they nurtured chart-topping artists like Migos, Lil Yachty, Lil Baby, City Girls, and others.

“With our years of ear-to-the-street skills coupled with SoundCloud’s endless stream of talent and powerful data pointing to what is authentically bubbling up in the scene I can’t think of a better merging of passion, intel and skill sets to create countless new paths for emerging artists. We are beyond excited for this partnership.”

Pierre “P” Thomas

“There is nothing more important to our process than discovering new artists, so partnering with SoundCloud, one of the most important hotbeds of talent, is incredibly exciting to us. Their data merging with our time-tested way of cultivating and building artists will be a blend to be reckoned with!”

– Kevin “Coach K” Lee

SoundCloud’s dedication to curating artist partnerships that allow flexibility to both artists and industry partners, with tailored and collaborative agreements focused at empowering artists to own and manage their rights and creative process, is demonstrated by this agreement. This news follows agreements with multi-platinum rapper Lil Pump and award-winning singer Tekno, which were previously announced.

Dame Dash Calls Kanye “Our New Michael Jackson”

Dame Dash Assures Kanye West Isn't 'Crazy' Following Wyoming Visit

Despite the negative press Kanye gets in the media, it’s hard to deny his genius, and his documentary jeen-yuhs only proves that. Many people caught on to West’s genius early on, specifically Dame Dash, who ended up signing Ye to Roc-A-Fella in the early 2000s. In a recent interview with The Jasmine Brand, the Roc-A-Fella records co-founder reflected on Ye’s two-decade-long career in the industry.

“I was the guy who always ran around with a camera ’cause I knew that these moments were priceless, it was just a matter of when it was time,” Dame said. “So, I was glad that they actually took that advice and did that, or at least followed the example. I got a lotta footage, but it’s just the time, it’s always about the times. I think this is the right time for that.”

Dame went on to call Ye “our new Michael Jackson,” someone that even Kanye has likened himself to.  “Whether that’s negative or positive, but that’s just what it is,” Dame added. “Every move he makes, everybody’s paying attention to.”

Dame went on to say how Kanye was not as bold when he first started, but over the years, he has continued to push the boundary and leverage his celebrity status to expand his brand outside of music. “He wasn’t that bold back then, but he always was very confident,” Dame shared. “It’s levels to it, so I thought he had a lot of confidence rapping among the fierce rappers that were around and also being vocal. I give everybody the same exact opportunity [when] I see potential, I see the same potential in most everybody. He just really took the opportunity, and he really listened. And what he did was he leveraged his celebrity very well.”

Dame added, “I love the fact that [Ye] was smart enough to take his celebrity, and that’s what I taught them—use your celebrity to leverage it for your own products. And that’s what he did and that’s what mostly everyone who has been successful has done.”

Kyle Rittenhouse Plans to Sue Whoopi Goldberg and Other Media Figures and Platforms Over “Lies”

Kyle Rittenhouse verdict

Kyle Rittenhouse, the 19-year-old who killed two people and injured one at a Black Lives Matter rally in 2020, recently announced that he plans to sue multiple “politicians, celebrities, [and] athletes” over calling him a “murderer.”

According to The Guardian, Rittenhouse told Fox News commentator Tucker Carlson that he is planning on launching the “Media Accountability Project,” an initiative to hold members of the press accountable for the “lies” he claims they spread about him.

“Me and my team have decided to launch the Media Accountability Project,” Rittenhouse said on the show, “as a tool to help fundraise and hold the media accountable for the lies they say and deal with them in court.”

When asked who he would be coming after, Rittenhouse said that he and his team would be taking legal action against  “a few politicians, celebrities, athletes,” and named Whoopi Goldberg specifically. “Right now, we’re looking at quite a few politicians, celebrities, athletes. Whoopi Goldberg is on the list,” he said. “She called me a murderer after I was acquitted by a jury of my peers.”

After Rittenhouse was acquitted on his murder charges in November of last year, Goldberg maintained her stance on The View. “Even all the excuses in the world does not change the fact that three people got shot,” Goldberg said. “Two people were murdered. To me, it’s murder. I’m sorry.”

Not only does Rittenhouse want to go after those who called him a “murderer,” but he wants to go after people that have called him a white supremacist as well. “We are going to hold everybody who’s lied about me accountable, such as everybody who’s lied, called me a white supremacist,” he said. “They’re all going to be held accountable, and we’re going to handle them in a courtroom.”

Social Media Reacts to Technical Issues and Playboi Carti at the ‘DONDA Experience Performance’

Kanye West Reportedly Earned $7 Million From 'DONDA' Merch

Last night, Kanye hosted the “Donda Experience Performance” in Miami, where he previewed his upcoming DONDA 2 album and played songs from the first installment. The show started good, but things started to trail off towards the end, with many making fun of the many technical issues that plagued the show and Playboi Carti’s “Off The Grid” performance.

When Ye tried to rap his verse in “Jail,” things started to go awry, but his mic would not work. Ye ended up throwing his mic in the floor of water. He went the rest of the performance without rapping, letting the instrumentals run for pretty much the duration of the event.

Alicia Keys and Fivio Foreign came out for “City Of Gods,” and it was evident whoever was behind the boards wasn’t doing their job. Eventually, they put Alicia’s vocals on in the background. To close out the night, Ye, Fivio, and Playboi Carti came out to perform “Off The Grid,” and that’s when things went off the rails.

Playboi Carti came out looking like a mix of The Joker and WWE Superstar Jeff Hardy. Fivio then tried to rap his verse but was horribly offbeat. Not only did he not rap his verse, but he ad-libbed loud sounds throughout. While Kanye closed the track out, he was without a mic, so the instrumental played.

Shortly after, many people took to Twitter to talk about the debacle that ended the show. People made fun of Playboi Carti’s appearance and performance, Fivio being offbeat, and sent their regards to the sound engineer who might be without a job in the morning.

Check out the reactions below.
