Joining other reality stars such as Jon Gosselin, Chef Melissa King, multi-hyphenate Bravo Top Chef winner, also created and presented special dishes and held a meet and greet for Sapphire Reserve cardmembers at the lounge as well.

Source Exclusive: Jon Gosselin and Media Execs talk Hip-Hop, Internet Rumors, and how the Digital Age Impacts Public Reputations at Sundance Film Festival

Jon Gosselin and Media Execs talk Hip Hop, Internet Rumors, and how the Digital Age Impacts Public Reputations at Sundance Film Festival

As the 40th Annual Sundance Film Festival comes to a wrap, big names headlined many of the feature events and movie premieres in Park City. As always, the festival had a focus on cutting-edge and thought-provoking technology as well as panels about how the digital age continues to impact the reputation of not just celebrities, but average people as well. Jon Gosselin, reality star turned DJ, who has endured his share of very public rumors, sat down with us to speak about his love of hip-hop music and navigating misinformation and rumors that spread like wildfire in the digital age while Media.com founder James Mawhinney discussed what celebrities and non-celebrities alike can do to manage their public reputation.

After spinning an amazing two-hour set at the Media.com x The Caspian Agency’s “Beats & Burgers Party,” one of Sundance’s hottest events, Gosselin sat down with The Source to discuss his transition from reality star to DJ, explaining that he has always had a passion for music and actually started DJing in 1993, long before he had any of his eight children. Following the end of his reality show, he returned to DJing in 2014, explaining that the hardest change upon returning after 20 years was making the transition from vinyl to digital technologies.

As for some of his favorite DJs that he looks to for inspiration, he listed DJ Monster, DJ Jazzy Jeff, and DJ Image. Regarding some of his favorite artists, Gosselin notes that he prefers old school, but is also an open-format DJ and enjoys mixing in newer artists as well, playing at diverse clubs and venues around the country. Although he has dabbled into creating his own music (he has two songs on Spotify), he says that his true passion is the DJ experience as well as working behind the scenes with SEO and marketing (Gosselin had a career in IT before pursuing his reality show full-time).

As to how hip-hop has influenced reality TV and vice versa, Gosselin explains that there are so many spin-off shows now, noting that when he began in 2006, there were not that many reality TV shows, but now it seems that there are so many reality shows, not just on television, but the internet as well and that many center around the music experience. He notes that a lot of current reality show participants reach out to him for advice about navigating the pros and cons of the reality television experience.

As for the cons, Gosselin shares his own experience with the spread of tabloid rumors following his very public divorce with his ex-wife Kate. While the rumors surrounding Gosselin have died down over the years, he notes that it was a rough time navigating the misinformation surrounding his personal life.

Joining Gosselin at the experience was Australian entrepreneur and businessman James Mawhinney, who in the wake of an uncontrollable wildfire of misinformation, lost his business, family home, and shining reputation — not to mention the financial, physical, and mental toll it took on hundreds of innocent people affected by the fallout. Instead of giving up, James refocused his energy and invested $20 MIL to createMedia.com, the world’s first online network that verifies users and fully ensures the integrity of news information.

Mawhinney spoke to The Source about reputation management and misinformation and how the average person can protect their reputation online, saying that “there’s a lot of tools out there, but many of them are not that effective. What we’ve done is create a safe online place where all profiles are verified whether you are an A-lister, a business, a brand, or an average individual. If you have something that is said about you in the media and you want to make a public statement, you can use the platform to make a personal statement.”

While Mawhinney explains that the platform’s format is similar to social media, there is no comment feature, leaving the user in control of the statements that he or she makes.

As for how users are verified, Mawhinney shares that the platform utilizes the same technology that banks use to verify the identities of their customers to make sure that money laundering isn’t taking place, noting that on social media, information laundering is often taking place, leaving a wake of helpless victims.

Mawhinney emphasized the fact that reputation management is an important part of mental health and explaining how putting the power back in a person’s hands by ensuring they control their own narrative is important in protecting not just their own reputation, but their own mental health as well.

While Gosselin is open in sharing his own struggles with public misinformation, he ends the interview on a positive note, noting that while he may have suffered some very public scrutiny, there were also many pros regarding his time in the public eye, namely that his eight children are well-provided for and have grown into adults, noting that the sextuplets are already 20 years old and just one year away from being able to get into a nightclub and listen to their dad DJ!

[WATCH]Shannon Sharpe Responds To Criticism Over Katt Williams Interview

Katt Williams Says Harvey Weinstein Offered Him Oral Sex

Shannon Sharpe recently admitted he was offended over criticism that he was starstruck during his interview with Katt Williams instead of asking important follow-up questions.

Katt’s infamous interview on the Club Shay Shay podcast went viral last week, but social media users criticized Shannon’s interviewing skills.

One viewer tweeted (then deleted):

“Shannon Sharpe’s poor interview skills make me feel like he is just not an active listener at all because he left soooooo much on the table with Katt. Interviewing (like journalism) is a skill and it sucks how we’ve minimized its importance over time.”

“I never said I was a journalist,” Shannon told former NFL star Chad Johnson during the “Nightcap” podcast on Thursday. “Follow up question with what?”

Shannon claimed Katt’s appearance was simply a “conversation” between friends.

“If you listened in my intro, I said… the person that’s coming by for conversation and a drink. I’m a conversationalist.”

Shannon continued: “I never professed to be a journalist. I’m an entertainer. If you want hard-hitting questions, ’60 Minutes’ is the platform for you. ‘Dateline.’ ’48 Hours.’ Go to Lester Holt.”

However, social media users argued a good conversationalist requires listening skills and Shannon struggled.

The Club Shay Shay episode racked up over 36 million views in 4 days.

[WATCH] Joe Budden Is Not Impressed With Lupe Fiasco’s ‘Andre 3000 Remix’

Joe Budden Joins Patreon As Head of Creator Equity

Last week, Lupe Fiasco posted a clip to X, formerly Twitter, of him rapping over the intro song from André 3000’s New Blue Sun, “I Swear, I Really Wanted to Make a ‘Rap’ Album But This Is Literally the Way the Wind Blew Me This Time.” Joe Budden caught a wind of Lupe’s bars and he is not impressed.

Lupe raps: “I prefer Kintsugi pottery over pristine, perfectly-weaved sophistry/ I’m bodhisattva possibly ’cause being bothered don’t even bother me/ But not a Buddha ’cause I ain’t got the modesty/ What you miss mentally is how much I catch bodily.”

Last week, Lupe tweeted: “Gonna rap all over that 3stacks album and put it in the time capsule for future generations.”

Joe took to his podcast, and shared: “Hey Lupe, man, stop. Stop it. He rapping over them damn flutes. I cut that shit right off.”

As one of his co-hosts started playing the remix, Budden joked: “Oh Jesus, Mary and Joseph. Yo dawg, it’s women listening… with vaginas. Please.”

He continued: “Why would he do that to that to them? I can’t say nothing ’cause he gonna diss me […] That was some bullshit. That was some clout chasing.”

Check out Budden’s comments at the 1:33:04 mark below.

André 3000 Reveals First Solo Album, ‘New Blue Sun’ Features No Bars

Andre 3000

In an exclusive interview with NPR Music’s Rodney Carmichael published this morning, musician André 3000 announced his debut solo album New Blue Sun, which the former member of OutKast will release this Friday, Nov. 17th!

In a conversation that explores this new album — its art includes a label warning that the album contains “no bars” — André reveals the mind-opening journey that led him to his current instrument of choice, the flute, and how it has allowed him to push his one-of-a-kind creative energy into new places.

It’s the first full-length André has released in 17 years, since OutKast’s sixth studio album Idlewild. And it’s part of an artistic evolution that has taken him from MC to multi-hyphenate icon.

“I didn’t know I’d be rapping,” he tells NPR. “I didn’t know I’d start producing. I didn’t know I’d start singing. I didn’t know my style would go a certain way. I didn’t know I’d put a wig on. Like, I didn’t know none of this. So, I’m on the ride with y’all.”

While the element of surprise has always been a strength of Andre’s repertoire, he acknowledges fans may be caught off guard by his latest departure. So he tackles the elephant in the room with the first song title: “I swear, I Really Wanted To Make A ‘Rap’ Album But This Is Literally The Way The Wind Blew Me This Time.”

“I don’t want to troll people. I don’t want people to think, Oh, this André 3000 album is coming! And you play it and like, ‘Oh man, no verses.’ So even actually on the packaging, you’ll see it says, ‘Warning: no bars.’ It’s letting you know what it is off the top.”

Though his feelings for rap haven’t diminished, he says it’s simply not where he is creatively.

“I love rap music because it was a part of my youth. So I would love to be out here with everybody rapping, because it’s almost like fun and being on the playground. I would love to be out here playing with everybody, but it’s just not happening for me. This is the realest thing that’s coming right now. Not to say that I would never do it again, but those are not the things that are coming right now. And I have to present what’s given to me at the time.”

In this hour-plus conversation with Carmichael, André is equally transparent and tangible, whether laughing about Tyler, the Creator’s funny response to his music, detailing the wild ayahuasca trip that had him purring like a panther in Hawaii or sharing the reason why he gets so many requests to play flute at funerals now.

Read selected quotes below. You can hear the entire interview and read an edited transcript of the conversation at NPR.org

Highlights from the interview:

Rodney Carmichael: I don’t know if fans always remember to take into account when we make these selfish demands for more music from artists that we love. In the last decade, you’ve lost both your mom and your dad and, more recently, your stepdad — who I know you’ve said was really an anchoring person in your life. That’s a lot of grief for anybody to hold, especially back to back. How did managing all of that changed you or impacted you as a person?

André 3000: Yes, it’s a lot … in the order that it happened. But it’s life too, man. The worst thing about it is you don’t expect it. It wasn’t anything that I could prepare for. But yeah, I’m happy to know that my parents and my stepfather are in their next phase of what’s happening, you know. At the time, it felt a lot. It was a lot. It was really, really heavy for me, but you get through it and you keep living. They exchange energy with you, so you kind of feel a boost in your back at the same time as if, you know, when they pass, they give it to you. So I can say, death makes you think about living. Death makes you push, you know.

***

[on the story behind the song titled “That Night In Hawaii When I Turned Into A Panther And Started Making These Low Register Purring Tones That I Couldn’t Control. Shit Was Wild.”]

Rodney Carmichael: Now, I ain’t gonna lie, this sounds like a straight-up ayahuasca trip or something like that.

André 3000: I was actually in Hawaii and it was my second night of the first time I’d ever taken ayahuasca. We did it like a three-night kind of phase. The first night was inviting and beautiful and the most powerful love and connection with all things I’ve ever felt in my life. The second night was different and everybody knows that aya will do you that way. The second night my stomach was hurting, my mouth contorted like a panther and I actually turned into a panther. And I was doing like, GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR. That kind of thing.

It was doing this thing called toning. Toning is another way of purging. And toning is where you make these vibrational noises that you can’t control. It started playing me like an instrument.
