The Members Of ‘Trap Jazz’ Want The New Docu-film On HULU To Motivate & Inspire

TRAPJAZZ 1080x1920 COVER IMAGE

Introducing Trap Jazz, the new docu-film that documents the creation of this new genre of music. Presented by Black multi-media platform Andscape and HULU, Trap Jazz tells the story of three classically-trained musicians — founder Chris Moten, drummer Devon Stixxx, and producer Cassius Jay — all of whom have worked behind-the-scenes with some of the world’s biggest recording artists to date.

Now, it’s time they step into the limelight. Hailing from Atlanta, all three members are best friends who came together to form this unique, one-of-a-kind band, showcasing the reality of their rise from the hood to the main stage, while pushing forth the undeniable power that comes with music.

Chris Moten, who created Trap Jazz in 2015, states, “Trap Jazz is the community, the neighborhood, the hood, the streets. The pain, the struggle, everything that you go through in the hood. Not saying that it’s only for people from the hood. It’s still the pain, struggle, and conflicts of life, mixed with the medicine or therapy of music, to be able to overcome it. Or to be able to cope with it or deal with it.”

He continues, “Trap Jazz is all of that together. It’s the pain, the struggle and the success, all wrapped up in one. It’s Hip-Hop music from way back in the day, but it’s trap music because it’s today. That’s the whole Hip-Hop part of it, that’s the trap side. It’s not just the music, it’s the culture. It’s the family, it’s your friends. It’s the loved ones, it’s all of that together.”

The Source had the chance to speak with all three musicians at the Ace Hotel in downtown Los Angeles, just one day before their official screening at the same venue. Trap Jazz is available now on HULU.

What do you want people to take away from the film?

Chris Moten: I want you to take away the pain, the struggle, the trials of life, the complications. The downtime, the depression, the failures. Rock bottom is important to all of us, failure is important to all of us. But it’s what we do with that. When they see the film and all of my trials and tribulations that I went through, that I’m still pushing for success and to make it. No matter the hand that life has dealt you, you can still win.

And the devil will not win. The devil will work in your life, but he will not win. No weapon formed against us shall prosper. It’s not the pain that we go through that makes us, it’s what we do with the pain. Like a knife being forged in the fire, it has to be beat on by rocks over and over again. And burnt up and burnt up and beat on. We have to go through pain in order to experience our true destiny,

The movie, it’s not about what you see us doing at a high level. I don’t want them to be misinformed by that. I want them to be able to relate, that they don’t take from this that “oh, they’re this and they’re that. They’re doing something that we can’t do.” No, look at the history. Look at the story that we come from. The beginning, just like everybody.

Cassius Jay: Basically, don’t give up on your dreams! If you have an idea, go with it. I don’t care how long it takes. 4, 5, 6 years, go with it. Run with it. Don’t give up.

Devon Stixxx: I want them to take away the fact that we put our all into this, and the fact that we’re starting something new for the new generation. I want them to get a good view of us, to see our hearts and how humble we are. How much this really means to us.

Hip-Hop celebrates 50 years this year, what does Hip-Hop mean to you?

Chris Moten: Without Hip-Hop, I wouldn’t know how to turn pain into prosperity. Hip-Hop has done that. It’s not just the music, it’s where Hip Hop came from. It’s the African American culture that created it, how we started it, and what they did with it. Tried to use it against us and how we took it. Exactly what I’m saying: use the evil that they tried to use against us, we turned it into our success story. We use our pain and turn it to success. Hip-Hop is that for me. It’s not just the sound that we listened to. It’s everything that we’re made up of, from beginning to end.

Cassius Jay: It means a lot. Shout out Zaytoven, Zaytoven on that joint too. Hip-Hop means a lot. I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for Hip-Hop. I wouldn’t be able to take care of my family if it wasn’t for Hip-Hop. The culture of Hip-Hop really taught me don’t give up when you struggle, just keep going on. Thanks Hip-Hop!

Devon Stixxx: Hip-Hop means the world to me. I love Hip-Hop. Without Hip-Hop, I wouldn’t be able to play a lot of the drum beats and enjoy a lot of the things that I do within the music that I play. I love Hip-Hop! And I got a chance to play with a lot of Hip-Hop artists too, so it’s good.

What does Trap Jazz mean to Atlanta and Atlanta’s standing on the music landscape?

Chris Moten: For me, Andre 3000 is my favorite rapper. Like he said at The Source Awards, “The South got something to say.” For a long time, Hip-Hop was New York and LA. It was East Coast, West Coast. We all know that. After 3000, Outkast, and Goodie Mob, the South has been ringing bells. Sounding off alarms ever since. We’re one of those alarms. For Atlanta, it means that we win together once again, putting Hip-Hop on the platform and doing something that nobody else has done. You gotta know that can only come out of Atlanta.

Cassius Jay: Trap Jazz means a lot, because Atlanta started culture. We started a whole new genre, a whole new culture. It means a lot, Trap Jazz means the world to Atlanta. Everybody’s supporting it, so it’s very big in the culture.

Devon Stixxx: Trap Jazz means a lot to Atlanta because a lot of trap music comes from Atlanta anyways. We have a lot of amazing musicians and jazz artists. For us to be able to infuse the two, it’s something that’s different and something that’s unique for Atlanta. And we all are from Atlanta, so we’re putting Atlanta on the map with this. This new genre.

“Barbie” Movie Banned in Kuwait due to LGBTQ+ Content, Faces Censorship Throughout the Middle East

Barbie Movie Banned in Kuwait due to LGBTQ+ Content, Faces Censorship Throughout the Middle East

Of all the places that Barbie will partying in this summer, Kuwait will not be one of them. The country has officially banned the “Barbie” movie from playing in theaters in the country due to LGBTQ+ content, which is against the country’s traditional Muslim values.

This week, the Kuwait News Agency (KUNA), published an official statement from the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Information for Press, Publishing, and Publications Affairs, which read that “(the committee) has banned the films (Barbie) and (Talk to Me) from showing,” stating that the intent of the ban was to “prevent anything that offends public morals or incites violations of public order, customs and traditions, and calls for ideas alien to society.”

Chairman of the Film Censorship Committee, LafiAl-Subaie, stated that the committee, before making its decision to authorize the showing of the film, “required the deletion of some obscene scenes, but if it carries ideas that encourage unacceptable behavior and a message that distorts the prevailing values of society, then a decision is taken to ban it completely,” explaining that “this applies to any film that includes a different vision of values.” It contradicts the vision of our society and our customs.”

The ban on the film “Talk to Me” is not due to LGBTQ+ content, but due to the presence of trans nonbinary actor Zoe Terakes, who has a major role in the film.

A censored version of the film, which has grossed more than $1 billion worldwide so far, was shown in several other Middle Eastern countries including Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates. It is facing a possible ban in Lebanon as there has been a recent surge in anti-homosexual rhetoric amongst some of the country’s politically influential groups.

In 2019, Nicki Minaj (whose song “Barbie World” appears on the “Barbie” soundtrack) pulled out of a concert in Saudi Arabia in protest of the country’s anti-LGBTQ+ laws.

Islam, which prohibits homosexuality, is the official religion of Kuwait. Islam and the Islamic Sharia (Islamic law) are the main sources of the Kuwaiti Laws and Legislations. According to The Guardian, Kuwait is considered to be the most censorious film market in the Gulf, routinely banning movies featuring any references to LBGTQ+ people, including “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” “Lightyear,” and “West Side Story.”

Billy Porter Forced To Sell His Home Because Of Actors Strike

Screen Shot 2023 08 09 at 8.49.28 AM

The ongoing actors strike in Hollywood is leaving many unable to maintain their lifestyles. Actor Billy Porter is now one of the Hollywood celebrities forced to sell their homes.
Porter revealed in a recent interview that he has to sell his house because he doesn’t make “f*ck-you money” like other stars.

Porter said he was living paycheck-to-paycheck to afford the luxury lifestyle he’s grown accustomed to.

“I have to sell my house,” Porter told Evening Standard. “Yeah! Because we’re on strike. And I don’t know when we’re gonna go back. The life of an artist, until you make f*ck-you money — which I haven’t made yet — is still check-to-check. I was supposed to be in a new movie and on a new television show starting in September. None of that is happening. So to the person who said, ‘We’re going to starve them out until they have to sell their apartments’ — you’ve already starved me out.”

Porter lashed out at Disney CEO Bob Iger for calling the strikers “disruptive forces” and saying their demands were “unrealistic”.

“To hear Bob Iger say that our demands for a living wage are unrealistic? While he makes $78,000 a day?”

“I don’t have any words for it, but: f*ck you,” Porter about Iger. “That’s not useful, so I’ve kept my mouth shut. I haven’t engaged because I’m so enraged… When I go back I will join the picket lines.”

Thoughts?

[WATCH] Ice-T Reveals He Made $23,000 To Star In ‘New Jack City’

Screen Shot 2023 08 07 at 9.45.41 AM

Easily classified as a cult-classic, rapper Ice-T changed the game when he starred in the blockbuster hit New Jack City. Now he’s revealing that he was paid $23,000 to star in the blockbuster film. New Jack City was a critical and commercial success, raking in nearly $50 million at the box office on a budget of around $8 million.

Ice-T spoke with the LA Times check out what he had to say below.

What was your attitude as you went into shooting “New Jack City”?
I was scared as s—. Mario offered me the role, but he wanted me to play the police. And this was right when the album I was dropping was “Original Gangster.” Dropping that and playing a cop simultaneously? I thought it was career suicide. Also: Who’s to say “New Jack City” was gonna be “New Jack City”? I’ve done a lot of movies that I don’t even want you to watch. So the thought that your first movie would actually turn out to be a blockbuster seemed crazy. But everyone around me was like, “Ice, man, you from the hood — there’s no opportunity. You got to take it.”

Why do you think Mario cast you?
He approached me in a club about doing the movie, and I thought he was bulls—ing, that it would be a small little part. But I went to Warner Bros. the next day and I read the script. I’m like, “That’s all the lines!” The thing of it was, at the time we did “New Jack City,” there weren’t enough young Black actors. They figured, “Well, Ice sold millions of records, maybe this’ll translate.” It was a risk. But everyone on that movie was a new jack. We had Judd Nelson [who’d starred in “The Breakfast Club” and “St. Elmo’s Fire”], but it was Mario’s first time directing. Wesley Snipes had only done “Major League” and a Spike Lee flick. And Chris Rock was the youngest, hippest street comic. They wanted to do something like an urban “Scarface” movie and make it look big, and somehow we pulled it off.
When did you know the movie was good?
I went to see it at Grauman’s Chinese when it came out. I sat in the back row behind some cats. When I came on the screen, I heard, “Look at Ice in that f— hat!” They was dissing me, so I’m like, “Ah, f—.” But by about 15 minutes into the movie, they were calling me by my name in the movie. And then it just blew up. Now, for the record, I got paid like $23,000 for that movie. So welcome to Hollywood. But my next movie was “Ricochet” with Denzel [Washington].

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson Reveals ‘Black Adam’ Sequels Won’t Happen Due to ‘Changes in Leadership’

The Rock Says Black Adam Will Not be in Intro Chapter of New DC Universe

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson‘s exploration of the DC Extended Universe through his character Black Adam was short-lived. The entire series is currently undergoing a revamp led by James Gunn, who Johnson states is the reason for his exit.

Speaking with Kevin Hart on Hart to Heart, Johnson tells his Hollywood bestie about the issue.

“I think that Black Adam got caught in a vortex of new leadership, and at that time, as we were creating ‘Black Adam’, developing it, shooting ‘Black Adam’, we got knocked down a little bit because of COVID and the shutdowns and got back up. There were so many changes in leadership,” Johnson said. “Anytime you have a company, but especially that size and magnitude, that is a public traded company, and you have all those changes in leadership, you have people coming in who creatively, fiscally, are gonna make decisions that you may not agree with philosophically. I think Black Adam was one of those movies that caught in that web of new leadership.”
