Soulja Boy reflected on his influential career in honor of the 50th anniversary of hip-hop on X, the website formerly known as Twitter, Sunday. Soulja appeared to be upset about not getting enough recognition in regard to Hip Hop 50.

“When I came in the game they said I killed hip hop. But really, I birthed the new wave of hip hop with internet/streaming. Ahead of my time. #HipHop50,” he wrote in one post. He followed up by adding: “Now everyone vlogs their career like me. Now everyone uploads their music to the internet. Now everyone goes live for their fans. I started it. Thank me or not. From there, Soulja reposted numerous tweets from fans. One user wrote: “I can truly say you didn’t ruined it you just brought a new style people weren’t used to that’s all. Now majority of these new rappers today I believe ruined Hip-Hop it just doesn’t have that same feel anymore sadly and a lot of music these days sounds to repetitive.” Another agreed: “Nowadays we have a bunch of rappers claiming to be the first and whatever they do… You were the first rapper to do literally everything modern.” Check out Soulja Boy’s tweets on his influence below.

Soulja Boy Reflects On His Impact

Soulja isn’t the only rapper to voice their frustration with a lack of appreciation on the 50th anniversary of hip-hop. Over the same weekend, Uncle Luke complained about the lack of recognition for Florida rappers for their impact on the genre. In posts on X, Luke explained that the feeling is nothing new as he’s used to “the disrespect towards Florida hip-hop.” Both rappers’ comments come after the star-studded Hip Hop 50 Live concert at Yankee Stadium.

Uncle Luke Calls Out Hip-Hop 50 Events For Lack Of Florida Rappers

Uncle Luke says that the ongoing celebrations in honor of the 50th anniversary of hip-hop haven’t done enough to recognize rappers from Florida. He voiced his complaint in a post on Twitter, Sunday, calling out “the disrespect towards Florida hip-hop” from over the years.

“Hip-hop fans from Florida. Don’t be upset they don’t recognize your favorite Floridian artists as part of hip-hop’s 50th year celebrations,” Luke began. “This industry has never considered us as hip-hop from the time I started hip-hop in the south. You can only imagine the names they called us. Country booty music trash, music. I can go on and on the disrespect towards Florida hip-hop.”

Fans had mixed opinions in response to Luke’s take. One user replied that he was only concerned about himself. “Sir Trina is from Florida and she was on that Essence stage Google is your friend. Just say they aren’t inviting you,” they posted. Another agreed with Luke: “I saw BET celebrate and they played the music, but people that visit the culture can’t tell me who to appreciate. The issue is these people have no idea of the importance Florida, New Orleans, Texas played in music.” Luke was born and raised in Miami, Florida in 1960. He is a former leader of the iconic rap group, 2 Live Crew.

Derek Jeter Makes Surprise Hip Hop 50 Celebration Appearance At Yankee Stadium

The celebrations for the 50th anniversary of hip-hop are in full swing. While Diddy was making a heartfelt declaration about how hip-hop “saved his life”, there have many concerts and musical celebrations. During one of these concerts, hosted by DJ Kid Capri, attendees were surprised by a casual walk-on guest – MLB Hall of Famer Derek Jeter. The career Yankee was a 14-time All-Star and 5-time World Series champion before retiring in 2014.

Jeter just walked out onto the stage at Yankee Stadium to give props to DJ Kid Capri and hip-hop as a whole. “Hip hop. Welcome home. I want to thank my brother Kid Capri for having me out here tonight. And I want everyone here to celebrate 50 years of hip-hop. Fifty years. At the same time, I want you to look forward to the next 50 years.” Many fans were happy to see Jeter return to his own stomping ground of Yankee Stadium.

Nia Long Joins Jeter In Celebrating Hip-Hop 50

Nia Long also joined in on the hip-hop 50 love. “Like Nia Long in a cherry thong with the lights on. Oochie Wally, 2001 @Nas. Hip-hop turns 50!!! The love is oh so real. Thank you for defining the culture. 😘 ❤,” Long tweeted on August 12. Long has long been referenced in hip-hop media, appearing as a lyric in many, many songs. “Oochie Wally” is one of the more iconic tracks, a Nas classic with the bar in question sung by Horse.

Earlier this year, Long finally gave a hug to Ghostface Killah. Killah has referred to Long on at least two occasions. ““Nia or Halle Berry, though? Yeah, now you talkin’ ’bout some primetime!”,” Killah rapped in 2000’s “Who Would You Fuck?”. “Glittered out, stout face, tec, Rae up in the Hilton/ Heard Nia Long is in the building,” the rapper added on 2001’s “The Hilton”. “My Old Crush gave me a Hug,” the artist captioned the post, “shout out to @iamnialong,” Killah wrote on in the caption of an Instagram post featuring the two of them linking up in July.

Melle Mel Says His Eminem Diss “Fell Short”

Melle Mel has spoken up after dropping his ruthlessly mocked diss track aimed at Eminem. The beef between the two MCs has been festering since March when Melle Mel said that Eminem is only as well-regarded as he is because the Detroit rapper is white. That led to a lot of backlash from a lot of industry legends. However, Mel doubled down on his comments.

Eminem stayed mostly out of the drama. That was until he dropped a bar about Mel during a feature on Ez Mil’s new single “Realest”. Mel’s response was an underwhelming and overly complex 73-second diss track. “Melle Mel, the producer 🤢, the engineer, the company that made the pen that Melle Mel wrote with, the company that made the paper he wrote this BS on, the front-desk person that let him in the studio, and what else am I missing?,” on X/Twitter used summarized the general attitude towards the “diss”. However, now Mel himself has addressed the track.

Melle Mel Admits Eminem Diss Wasn’t His Best

“In light of the 50th anniversary of Hip-Hop, my original intention was to contribute an engaging and enjoyable endeavor to enrich the cultural landscape,” Mel said in a statement. “Regrettably, my response fell short in its execution, and I accept full responsibility for the misjudgment. I acknowledge that my perspective was ill-conceived and I am prepared to take ownership of this oversight. It has become evident that Eminem’s dedicated and passionate fan base stands unwaveringly by his side. That is a testament to their genuine admiration and loyalty—a truly commendable aspect.”

Furthermore, he continued. “From the onset, I have consistently recognized Eminem’s exception prowess as an emcee, without reservation,” he continued. “My unfortunate choice of words, suggesting that his success is solely attributed to the color of his skin was in no way reflective of my genuine beliefs. It was an attempt, albeit misguided, to engage competitively within the emcee sphere. It is important to acknowledge that the dynamics of Hip-Hop have evolved over distinct eras. It’s inevitable that not everyone will resonate with my perspective, just as I may not fully comprehend others. Throughout my involvement in shaping the Hip-Hop landscape, the cornerstone has been built upon a foundation of mutual respect, even when personal preferences may differ.”

Latto Speaks On Uplifting Other Female Artists: “Let Me Do My Part”

Latto says that she feels obligated to help out other female artists in hip-hop as she becomes more successful. Latto explained that she’s happy to do so during an interview with PEOPLE in honor of the 50th anniversary of hip-hop.

“Hip-hop is more than music. It’s a way of life, it’s a culture,” Latto began. “Hip-hop has influenced even other genres of music. We teach people how to dress through our music. We tell them what liquor they should be drinking, and what clubs they should be at, where they should go for vacation. It’s literally so much deeper than music, and I’m very, very honored to be a part of the genre.”

From there, she reflected on her responsibility to assist others in the genre: “It’s been a long time coming for women in rap. I think it is just my duty to do that. We’ve been going 10 times as hard for equal recognition as the men, and I just think it’s my responsibility to bring others up as I go. I see how hard they work and how hard we have to go to literally just get equal recognition. So it’s like, ‘Let me do my part.’ I hope that I’m leaving behind a legacy of just confidence and empowerment for women, and maybe just like an escape from your everyday life and just turn on some Latto and feel empowered, feel like anything is possible, and I’m not taking no for an answer.”

Speaking of Latto’s success, her music hit 1 billion streams on Spotify, earlier this year. She was also nominated for Best New Artist at the Grammy Awards in February. In 2022, she dropped her second studio album, 777.

Lil Kim And Lil Cease Reunited For A Performance Of ‘Crush On You’ At ‘Hip-Hop 50 Live’

Hip-Hop legends came out in full force last night (August 11) at Yankee Stadium. The line-up for Hip-Hop 50 Live boasted several iconic acts, including rap legend, Lil Kim.

Kim is often credited for opening doors for women in rap, as she was unapologetic with her sexuality and innovative with her fashion. She came out of the gate ready to win what was previously a man’s game with her debut album, Hard Core. Hard Core dropped in 1996, and boasted several game-changing hits, including the Jay-Z-assisted “Big Momma Thang” and her breakthrough single, “Crush On You,” with her fellow Junior M.A.F.I.A. member Lil Cease.

Last night, Kim reunited with Cease to perform “Crush On You.” Throughout the course of the performance, fans reminded Kim and Cease that song has been a favorite among them for years, as the two took quick breaks while rapping, and the audience joined in, filling in the blanks.

In addition to this exciting performance, we can expect to hear a lot more from Kim soon. Last month, Kim took to Instagram to share that her long-awaited autobiography, co-written by journalist Kathy Iandoli, has completed the editing process. She also revealed that legendary fashion designer Marc Jacobs wrote the foreword.

Lil Kim Has Revealing Wardrobe Malfunction During Massive Hip-Hop 50 Show

Some of hip-hop’s stars from every era gathered at Yankee Stadium in New York City to celebrate the genre’s 50th birthday to massive success on Friday (August 11). However, not everything about the show went perfectly for everyone, but then again, it’s a small hiccup in a much larger astonishment. Moreover, Lil Kim unfortunately suffered a wardrobe malfunction (more specifically, a nip slip) during her time on stage. She wore a shiny crop top and shorts with a jacket over herself, and at one point, the mesh gave out and revealed some extra, unintended skin. Still, the legendary femcee shrugged it off and continued to excel in her performance regardless of the mishap.

Furthermore, it was one of many amazing performances that night, joined by hip-hop legends from every corner. For example, Run-DMC gave what is apparently their final performance ever as a group, closing their indelible chapter in rap with the most meaningful bow possible. Among other rappers who performed were Snoop Dogg, T.I., Lil Wayne, Ashanti, Fat Joe, Common, the legendary duo EPMD, and many more. With all those titans in mind, Lil Kim’s malfunction is but a small and glossed-over piece in the puzzle.

Lil Kim Performs At Yankee Stadium

For far too long, the media has sensationalized incidents like these and placed blame on the victim of it. Regardless, it’s only as negative as you make it, and it’s clear that Lil Kim took everything in stride and would not let that define or hinder her performance. In addition, that was far from the most notable or important surprise of the night, as special guests joined the artists that were already on the roster. For example, hip-hop’s godfather DJ Kool Herc was in attendance, and The Fugees and Lauryn Hill put on a surprise set with Nas.

All in all, the show was over six hours long, and it would be a disservice to try to sum up everything great about it. We would leave out so many important contributors to the genre, so don’t let a simple piece of clothing distract you from the magic that took place here. Also, the ceremony honored many rappers who lost their lives over the years, making this as poignant and powerful as it was fun and fabulous. Nas Brought Out Lauryn Hill For A Suprise Performance Of ‘If I Ruled The World’ At The ‘Hip-Hop 50’ Concert

Hip-Hop had a special 50th birthday celebration last night in New York City — where it all began. During the star-studded event, several hip-hop legends and fans packed Yankee Stadium for a stacked set of performances.

One of the performers was New York City legend Nas, who went down his catalog to perform several songs—including some of his earliest hits, as well as his newer songs from his King’s Disease and Magic series.

Of course, he performed “If I Ruled The World (Imagine That)” from his 1996 album, It Was Written. The song is a collaboration with Lauryn Hill which has gone on to be a signature song for both artists.

During the performance of “If I Ruled The World,” Nas brought out Hill herself as a surprise treat to the audience.

Dress in a flowing pink coat, Hill maintained a magical presence onstage, which was met with cheers from the crowd. Elsewhere during the performance, the two performed “Nobody,” their collaboration from Nas’ 2021 album, King’s Disease II. Though, a particular line from that song, on which, Hill raps, “I’m savin’ souls and y’all complainin’ ’bout my lateness,” seemed to ruffle a few feathers among fans, who have often joked that Hill rarely arrives on time to her performances.

You can see some clips for Nas and Hill’s performances above.

Social Media Is Absolutely Roasting Complex’s “All-Time New York Rappers” List

In celebration of the 50th anniversary of Hip-Hop, many media outlets are doing feature series about the genre. This inevitably leads to a variety of listicles about various scenes, subgenres, and demographics. But few pieces have gotten people as heated as the “50 Best New York Rappers of All Time” list published by Complex on August 11.

The includes a top ten of (in order) Jay-Z, Biggie, Nas, Rakim, LL Cool J, Fif, Nicki, DMX, Busta Rhymes, and KRS-One. It’s a top ten that people may have some slight objections to but is mostly sound. However, the scope and scene knowledge of the team behind the article quickly becomes apparently the further you read. Or don’t read, because the article counts up from #50.

Complex Sure Made Some Choices

A lot of recency bias is present in the Complex article, especially lower down the list. Ice Spice has had a meteoric rise over the past year. However, she makes the list at #50 despite her limited body of work. Meanwhile, Diddy sits at #48, 23 places below Cardi B. The article feels very…vibes driven. Ice Spice gets a spot because she’s hot right now. Cardi anchors the midpoint because most people like Cardi B. Meanwhile, French Montana does not make an appearance on the list. Argue all you want about his heritage but saying he’s not a New York rapper is pretty insulting to the contributions the man made to the city’s scene in the early 2000s.

Perhaps it’s the ranking aspect that makes the article so egregious in the eyes of so many people. While an unranked list, or something more akin to a Hall of Fame list, would still garner debate, it’s the numerical ranking that stuck in the people’s craw. Ice Spice could become an all-timer for NYC. But to have her start a list of the greatest New York rapper of the last 50 years is a wild decision. At the end of the day, it almost feels like ragebait content – a purposefully inflammatory list designed to stoke engagement.
