Benny Blanco Thinks Frank Ocean’s Ill-Fated Coachella 2023 Set Was The ‘Best Performance Of The Weekend’

Frank Ocean’s Coachella 2023 performance from last weekend has received criticism. Even Ocean himself wasn’t fully satisfied with the show, as he later said in a statement, “It was chaotic. There is some beauty in chaos. It isn’t what I intended to show but I did enjoy being out there and I’ll see you soon.”

That statement, by the way, was part of the announcement that Ocean was pulling out of his headlining performance at the festival’s upcoming second weekend.

Not everybody hated Ocean’s performance, though. Justin Bieber wrote of it, “I was blown away by Frank Oceans Coachella performance,” adding, “It made me want to keep going and get better as an artist.” Now, Bieber collaborator Benny Blanco has also weighed in and he agrees.

A TMZ reporter caught up with Blanco yesterday (April 19) in Beverly Hills, and when they brought up the backlash Ocean has faced, Blanco said of the performance, “I loved it. It was incredible. […] So inspiring on so many levels. Incredible. One of my favorite shows I’ve ever seen.” He also called the set the “best performance of the weekend.”

Blanco seemed unaware of the criticism Ocean was facing, as he noted, “I don’t read the internet.” The video ends with Blanco avoiding questions about Ocean’s canceled second-weekend set and whether or not he should have “sucked it up” and performed through his injury.

Frank Ocean Fans Devastated After He Pulls Out Of Coachella

Frank Ocean will no longer perform at Coachella for the second week, to the ire of his dedicated fanbase who’ve waited years for this moment. It’s not entirely shocking, given how generally unenthusiastic he seemed on stage last weekend. Coachella announced Blink-182 as his replacement, though some feel this warrants a refund. Apparently, the ankle injury he sustained in the week leading up to the festival led to the cancelation, as his rep confirmed to Variety. “On doctor’s advice, [Ocean] is not able to perform weekend 2 due to two fractures and a sprain in his left leg,” they said.

Ocean’s set design underwent significant changes within a day of his performance. He reportedly intended to have an entire ice rink with hockey players. “It was chaotic. There is some beauty in chaos. It isn’t what I intended to show but I did enjoy being out there and I’ll see you soon,” Frank Ocean added in his statement. No word on when he plans to make this up, especially after his vague update on new music during weekend one. Still, many aren’t happy about the massive changes to the Coachella line-up.

The chaos that Frank Ocean refers to in his statement seemingly references his turbulent performance on Sunday night. Along with scrapping his set design at the last minute, he was also significantly late for his headlining slot. Frank Ocean appeared on stage nearly an hour after he was scheduled and was forced to cut his set short after going over Indio, CA’s curfew. Many hoped that he’d make up the abrupt cancelation during weekend two but evidently, that won’t happen this year. On top of the live stream of his performance was nixed moments before he went on stage.

Frank Ocean’s Coachella performance was among the most anticipated sets of the year, if not, the decade, so far. He was initially scheduled to perform in 2020 but due to the pandemic, those plans fell through. Ultimately, there’s disappointment in the air, even if many expected the otherwise mysterious singer to find a way out of Coachella this year. There’s a legion of dedicated fans who spent hard-earned cash and took time off to see Frank Ocean live. Now, they must settle for Blink-182. Check out a few reactions below.

Frank Ocean’s Coachella Set Sparked 491% Spike of ‘Coachella Refund’ Google Searches

Following backlash over Frank Ocean’s Sunday night performance, global searches for “Coachella refund” increased by 491%, according to an analysis of Google search data.

Before Coachella’s second weekend, online searches for “Coachella refund” skyrocketed to almost five times the daily average volume, according to a recent discovery by CasinoAlpha.com. This represents a significant increase in people searching for ways to receive compensation for their tickets. As many festival goers start to second-guess attending Coachella’s second weekend, searches for “sell Coachella tickets” also increased by 445% over the weekend.

After Frank Ocean, the Sunday night headliner, received negative feedback from festival-goers during the first weekend, searches have been conducted ahead of Coachella’s second weekend. A ‘curfew’ caused the rapper, who hadn’t performed live in four years, to leave the stage suddenly after arriving over an hour late, disappointing many of his fans, who promptly flocked to social media to vent their disappointment. Frank Ocean’s choice to end the livestream of his performance angered fans who couldn’t attend Coachella as well.

A spokesperson for CasinoAlpha.com stated:

“Coachella festival is one of the most famous festivals in the world, with celebrities and music fans heading to the desert every April to see some of the most renowned musicians take to the stage.

The festival takes place over two weekends and after the heavy criticism that Frank Ocean’s set received, these findings suggest that many are looking to get their tickets refund as well as sell their ticket for the second weekend, whether this be out of disappointment or fear that Frank Ocean may pull out of performing altogether. It will be interesting to see if Frank Ocean does indeed perform this coming Sunday and if his set changes at all based on the reaction to the opening weekend show.”

One of those possibilities is true as Frank Ocean will not be back for the second run of Coachella. He will be replaced by the Rock group Blink 182.

Coachella released a statement regarding Ocean’s exit:

“Frank Ocean will not be performing at weekend 2 of Coachella.

“After suffering an injury to his leg on festival grounds in the week leading up to weekend 1. Frank Ocean was unable to perform the intended show but was still intent on performing, and in 72 hours, the show was reworked out of necessity.

“On doctor’s advice, [Ocean] is not able to perform weekend 2 due to two fractures and a sprain in his left leg.”

Frank Ocean also added a statement. “It was chaotic. There is some beautiy in chaos. It isn’t what I intended to show but I did enjoy being out there and I’ll see you soon.”

Although Frank Ocean’s performance at Coachella was widely panned, the singer’s streams are rising.

According to Billboard, Ocean’s daily on-demand streams in the U.S. doubled. The numbers are a 94% increase from 5.2 million to 10.1 million. The songs that saw the largest increase are “Pink + White,” “Nights,” and “Novacane.”

After what could be considered a disaster of performance during weekend one, Frank Ocean will not be back for the second run of Coachella. He will be replaced by the Rock group Blink 182.

Frank Ocean Admits His Infamous Coachella 2023 Performance Was ‘Chaotic’ In A New Statement

For the past few days since last weekend, Frank Ocean’s headlining performance at Coachella 2023’s first weekend has remained on people’s minds. His set was a bit of a disaster, and later, reports surfaced that Ocean’s plan for the show had to be changed last-minute because he sustained an injury days before the performance. Then, it was confirmed yesterday (April 19) that Ocean is no longer scheduled to headline the upcoming second weekend of Coachella.

That news was confirmed via an official statement, and in that statement, Ocean reflected on his ill-fated first-weekend performance. In the statement, provided by an Ocean representative to Uproxx yesterday, Ocean said:

“It was chaotic. There is some beauty in chaos. It isn’t what I intended to show but I did enjoy being out there and I’ll see you soon.”

The statement also included a message not directly attributed to Ocean. It offers some context about the situation, reading, “After suffering an injury to his leg on festival grounds in the week leading up to weekend 1, Frank Ocean was unable to perform the intended show but was still intent on performing, and in 72 hours, the show was reworked out of necessity. On doctor’s advice, Frank is not able to perform weekend 2 due to two fractures and a sprain in his left leg.”

Frank Ocean’s Coachella set left many fans underwhelmed. According to TMZ, Frank Ocean was on hand at rehearsals and got injured while riding a bike to transport across the festival grounds.

Ocean’s set was supposed to include an ice rink and ice skaters, casting over 100 skaters. Upon their arrival at Coachella, every piece of the skating routine was scrapped. The skaters would instead operate as background dancers and wore custom Prada.

Frank Ocean Drops Out Of Coachella Week 2

Frank Ocean’s highly anticipated headlining performance at Coachella did not live up to the hype or the very high expectations of his fans. Unlike many of the other artists, Frank’s performance was not live-streamed. This upset many fans who had planned to watch from home. In addition, those who attended Coachella in person expressed some disappointment with the logistics and scheduling of the performance. Although people were pleased that he showed up, there were issues that prevented it from being a fully satisfying experience. From Frank showing up an hour late to an injury he sustained before the performance, the entire situation was a mess.

It isn’t all bad in the end, though. Frank did confirm that he has a new album on the way. “It’s been so long. Everybody talks about how long it’s been. ‘It’s been so long, it’s been so long.’ But I have missed you,” he said. “I want to talk about why I’m here, because it’s not because of a new album. It’s because — not that there’s not a new album… but there’s not right now. Chill, chill, chill. No, it’s not right now.” Hopefully that was at least some comfort to the fans who were upset that he was late. Though they may have been angry when he cut the set short, they will probably be counting themselves lucky now. Frank just pulled out of week 2.

Frank Leaves Fans Hanging

In a new statement released by Frank and his team, it has been confirmed that the artist will not be making an appearance at weekend 2. “Frank Ocean will not be performing at weekend 2 of Coachella. After suffering an injury to his leg on festival grounds in the week leading up to weekend 1,” the statement said. “Frank Ocean was unable to perform the intended show but was still intent on performing, and in 72 hours, the show was reworked out of necessity.” Cue disappointment and anger from Frank’s fans.

In the statement, Frank also had a few things to say. However, they were mostly empty words about how special it was to have been there the first weekend. “It was chaotic. There is some beauty in chaos. It isn’t what I intended to show,” Frank said. “But I did enjoy being out there and I’ll see you soon.” Whether or not this statement is enough to assuage the anger of fans who bought tickets specifically for Frank Ocean remains to be seen. Is Frank Ocean Still Performing At Coachella Weekend 2

Frank Ocean closed out the first weekend of Coachella 2023 as the headliner last Sunday night, April 16, and it proved to be a thankless job. Fans were mostly left disappointed because Ocean’s set started an hour later than scheduled and was lackluster once it was underway.

It turns out, everybody should have followed Justin Bieber’s lead and appreciated Ocean for performing at all.

TMZ reported the following day that Ocean “suffered a serious ankle injury after being involved in a bike accident” in the days leading up to his headlining set.

“The accident occurred when Frank was at Coachella rehearsing his set. He wasn’t onstage, though, we’re told the mishap involved bikes used to roam around the Empire Polo Club grounds, and it was serious enough for doctors to advise Frank’s production be changed,” TMZ wrote.

The most significant alteration was scrapping an ice rink that had been specifically built for Ocean’s set for a “skating routine” involving “over 100 hockey players” cast from Los Angeles-based hockey teams last month. Instead, as Uproxx observed, Ocean’s set “felt aimless and unplanned,” with bouts where songs were just playing over the speakers without any performance element from Ocean.

Ocean’s lack of animation can officially be chalked up to his inability to move. Variety reported on Wednesday, April 19, that Ocean “will not be performing” as Coachella’s headliner for the upcoming second weekend. The publication additionally relayed that Ocean’s headlining slot will be taken by Blink-182 this Sunday, April 23.

Representatives for Ocean provided a statement:

“After suffering an injury to his leg on festival grounds in the week leading up to weekend 1, Frank Ocean was unable to perform the intended show but was still intent on performing, and in 72 hours, the show was reworked out of necessity. On doctor’s advice, Frank is not able to perform weekend 2 due to two fractures and a sprain in his left leg.”

Ocean’s statement reads, “It was chaotic. There is some beauty in chaos. It isn’t what I intended to show, but I did enjoy being out there, and I’ll see you soon.”

The beauty in Ocean’s set came when he spoke directly to the crowd, quasi-teasing an album and remembering his younger brother, Ryan, who died in August 2020 in a single-car crash at 18.
