Bill Belichick Could Join Playoff Team, Adam Schefter Claims

Adam Schefter has claimed that the next landing spot of Bill Belichick isn’t limited to only teams with vacancies. “We talked about this with Tom Brady when he became a free agent. Every team with a quarterback had to make a decision. Do we want to roll with Tom Brady or do we want to roll with our quarterback? And I think it’s similar with teams and their coaches. There may be a team out there out of the playoffs, in the playoffs, that has a head coach, that this morning woke up to the news that Bill Belichick is a free agent. And that owner is asking himself, ‘Is my franchise better off with the current head coach that I have or me making the dramatic move to turn to a man who’s 15 wins away from setting the all-time win record and breaking Don Shula’s record?’” Schefter said.

There are currently seven teams with vacancies in the NFL. However, given that Belichick became a free agent so recently, it’s unclear if any teams have reached out to interview him. Despite beginning his coaching career in 1975, Belichick has not worked for any of the six other teams with vacancies.

Don’t Hire Bill Belichick As A GM, Asante Samuel Warns

Meanwhile, Asante Samuel has sent a warning to Bill Belichick’s next employer – keep the legendary coach as a coach only and not, as he had been in New England, general manager also. “If any owner would give Bill Belichick that power again, that would be crazy,” Samuel, who played for Belichick between 2003 and 2007, told TMZ. Belichick served in the dual role of head coach and general manager since taking the helm at Foxoboro in 2000.

However, Belichick the GM often got in the way of Belichick the head coach. After picking eight Pro Bowlers (and one Hall of Famer) in the first round between 2001 and 2012, Belichick has drafted just one first-round Pro Bowler in the last 11 years. Over time, Belichick the GM caught up with Belichick the head coach. Poor choices in the draft and free agency gave Belichick a diminishing product to coach on the field.

Bill Belichick Leaves The Patriots

Belichick parted ways with the Patriots after 24 years earlier this week. The news was first reported by ESPN, and finally answered one of the biggest coaching uncertainties of the NFL offseason. According to insiders with knowledge of the situation, the decision was mutual and amicable. Belichick had one year left on his contract and was allowed to leave the Patriots freely without seeking compensation. Additionally, the veteran coach is expected to draw some interest from some of the other seven teams with head coaching vacancies.

As for New England, sources have reported that Jerod Mayo will take over as head coach. A first-round draft pick of the Patriots, Mayo has served as a linebackers coach since 2019. He is expected to be formally announced next week. Mayo has a lot of locker room support. Some players openly hoped that he would get the job after Belichick’s departure. Furthermore, the team will have a lot of decisions to make, such as their quarterback going forward. The team holds the No. 3 pick in the 2024 draft and is projected to take 2023 Heisman-winning quarterback Jayden Daniels.

Usher Drops First Teaser For Super Bowl Halftime Show

Usher has released the first trailer for his upcoming Super Bowl Halftime show. Titled “One performance, 30 years in the Making”, the minute-long trailer highlights Usher’s legacy, with a collection of fans and celebrities performing the singer’s 2004 classic, “Yeah”. Usher was announced as the Super Bowl headliner back in September 2024, with the NFL debuting a skit involving Kim Kardashian.

Furthermore, Usher also announced that Super Bowl Sunday (February 11) will also mark the release of his new album. Coming Home will be Usher’s ninth studio and his first since Hard II Love in 2016. In the last seven years, Usher’s only extended project was 2018’s A, a collaborative album with Zaytoven. Furthermore, he will be hoping that Coming Home will be a return to form for his work. Hard II Love was his first album since his 1994 debut to neither peak at #1 nor receive an RIAA certification.

However, the Super Bowl is not Usher’s only sporting connection. In October, the singer extended an invite to the Las Vegas Aces to attend his “My Way” residency show after missing their WNBA Championship parade. “I wish I could’ve been there, but pull up to my show… I got U. Shoutout to the defending champs, the Vegas Aces. A’ja Wilson, I got your message, I see you, I hear you. Couldn’t be at the parade but wanted to send this out to you to say congratulations to you and all the lovely ladies that once again did it again. I wanted to invite you to come see the show, come see me do it my way here in Vegas. We stick together, we love one another. Congratulations on this day and I’ll see you soon,” the musician said in a video posted to social media. While Usher was unable to attend the Aces’ parade after defending their WNBA title, 2 Chainz was on hand to perform.

However, Usher’s offer led to a little bit of friendly beefing amongst the team. “A’ja hit us in the group chat talkin bout WE are invited to go see Usher, but now that I’m seeing the video…SHE was invited. Which is cool, that’s fine! But why lie to ur teammates? 💔,” Sydney Colson wrote on X. “Lolololololololol syd scores 2 points in game 4 and think she can get usher tickets awww,” Wilson shot back.

Tyreek Hill Goes After Jason Whitlock Amid Stephen A. Smith Feud

Tyreek Hill has weighed in on the ongoing beef between Jason Whitlock and Stephen A. Smith, seemingly siding with the ESPN host. “Bro you shouldn’t be commenting on anything, but snacks 😂,” Hill wrote on X in response to a meme posted by Whitlock. “Dang, I spent the season promoting you for MVP,” Whitlock wrote in response to the Dolphins star.

Smith absolutely tore into Jason Whitlock after the Blaze Media personality called Smith’s memoir “fiction” and referred to the ESPN personality as “Stephen A. Myth”. “I mean it from my soul when I say this is the worst human being I’ve ever known. I don’t know of another human being worse than Jason Whitlock. He is a piece of sh-t. He’s the dude that’s going to have a funeral and ain’t going to be no pallbearers,” Smith said on his podcast. Furthermore, other current and former ESPN employees chimed in to corroborate Smith’s comments about Whitlock, who was employed by the media giant on two separate occasions.

Tyreek Hill Falls Short Of History

However, Hill’s 2023 ended in disappointment. After declaring that he was going to become the NFL’s first 2000-yard receiver, he was only able to record the 7th-best season in NFL history. While had been on pace to hit 2000 yards as late as Week 12, a string of weak performances and a game missed through injury saw the record slip away from him. He finished the season with 1799 yards, the best in the league but nowhere close to 2012 Calvin Johnson’s 1964 yards.

But now Hill turns his attention to the playoffs. The wildcard game between the Chiefs and Dolphins this week is expected to be one of the coldest in NFL history. Daytime highs in Kansas City are projected at 12 degrees. However, with the game set to begin at 7pm, the temperature could be as low as -3 degrees come kickoff. There is also an expected amount of high wind chill. This could majorly affect the game and the team’s strategies. But both sides are going to want to bundle up warm. If the temperature does hit -3, then it would become the fifth-coldest game in playoff history.

Tom Brady Posts Heartfelt Tribute To Bill Belichick After Coach’s Firing

Tom Brady took to social media to pay tribute to Bill Belichick after it was announced that Belichick had left the New Patriots. “I’m incredibly grateful to have played for the best coach in the history of the NFL. He was a great leader for the organization, and for all of the players who played for him. We accomplished some amazing things over a long period of time, many of which will be hard to replicate. He worked every day to help us achieve the ultimate goal, in the ultimate team sport,” Brady’s Instagram post began.

Furthermore, he talked about the personal impact Belichick’s coaching had on his career. “And, although we were successful, some of the greatest lessons I learned were in the moments where we faced the most challenging adversities. He set the tone for the organization. To never falter in the face of adversity, and to do what we could do, and what was in our control, which was to go out and DO OUR JOB. I could never have been the player I was without you Coach Belichick. I am forever grateful. And I wish you the best of luck in whatever you choose next,” Brady continued.

Travis Kelce Will Play In 2024

Travis Kelce has confirmed that he intends to play the 2024 season with the Chiefs. “I have no reason to stop playing football. I love [playing with the Chiefs]. We still have success, come in with the right mindset, and I just love the challenge that it gives me every single day to try and be at my best. I have no desire to stop anytime soon,” Kelce said Thursday.

Furthermore, the 34-year-old tight end said he had contemplated retirement but simply wasn’t in a place to think about life without the Chiefs just yet. “I’ve been fortunate to do a few things outside of the sports world that I’ve been enjoying doing, like getting on camera. The [Saturday Night Live] stuff kind of opened up a new happiness and maybe a new career path for me. But it’s funny for me to even say that at this point in my career. I think it’s so much further down the road than it is right now,” Kelce added. The 11-6 Chiefs open their Super Bowl defense with a wildcard matchup against Miami.

If the temperature does hit -3, then it would become the fifth-coldest game in playoff history. The record is the 1967 “Ice Bowl”, which had a game-time temperature of -13 and a wind chill temperature of -48. However, the cold weather conditions could pose a problem for Miami. The Dolphins haven’t won a game played below 40 degrees since Christmas Eve 2016. Saturday, if projected temperatures are reached, will be the coldest game in Dolphins history.

Nick Saban Says Retirement Had Nothing To Do With NIL

Nick Saban has denied speculation that his retirement was due to the evolving world of compensation for college athletes. “Don’t make it about that. It’s not about that. To me, if you choose to coach, you don’t need to be complaining about all that stuff. You need to adjust to it and adapt to it and do the best you can under the circumstances and not complain about it,” Saban told ESPN. While Saban had previously expressed doubts about NIL, namely that is could create a “pay to play” system, he also acknowledged that it was the future of college athletes.

However, that didn’t stop people pointing the finger of blame at the system for Saban’s departure. Colorado head coach Deion Sanders, a vocal opponent of NIL, openly suggested that Saban had retired due to NIL rules in a tweet reacting to the news. As for Saban’s replacement, frontrunner Dan Lanning also already announced that he intends to stay and see out his contract with Oregon.
