Fireboy DML Admits To Being Reclusive: ‘I’ve Never Really Been The Going Out Person’

Over the past few months, Afrobeats artist Fireboy DML has been in heavy rotation by way of TikTok and radio play. His song “Peru” received a co-sign by Ed Sheeran, who appeared on a remix of the track, and he was recruited by Madonna for a Sickick-produced remix of her 1998 hit “Frozen.

Although his music has made him the life of every party, Fireboy admits he prefers spending time on his own. In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Fireboy mentioned that he values remaining rooted in his humanity.

Fireboy said, “I’ve always been reclusive, placing priority on solitude, having alone time, and I’ve never really been the going-out person. Growing as a person and into the industry, seeing things, I realized how important it is to hold on to that part of me that always seeks solitude after a long period of time of exchanging energy out there.”

Still, he enjoys seeing crowds dancing and reciting the words to his songs while on tour. Earlier this year, Fireboy performed his first US tour, which he said were some of the best shows of his career.

“It was during the peak winter period and people were coming out in the snow,” Fireboy said. “Family men, married people with kids. It meant a whole lot to me. When you live this life and you’re blinded by the glamour, it’s the little things that burst your head.”

21 Savage And Blxst Lend New Verses To Fireboy DML’s Latest ‘Peru’ Remix

Nigerian singer Fireboy DML took a huge step in crossing over to US success in 2021 with his tropical single “Peru” — especially after adding British singer Ed Sheeran to its remix earlier this year, launching the single onto the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Today, Fireboy gave the single a shot of added adrenaline with another new remix, this time tapping trap rap superstar 21 Savage and emerging West Coast crooner Blxst to contribute similarly optimistic verses to the upbeat single.

In his verse, 21 Savage brags about his success over the past few years, boasting that he’s accumulated “twenty million dollars in a year and that’s with no shows.” Meanwhile, Blxst offers a romantic stanza of his own, pining for the company of a woman who makes him ponder changing his plans. “I’ve been wanting you so bad / That you might make me backtrack,” he rhymes. “Might just fly away / Just touched down from MIA.”

Fireboy’s toehold on US pop culture has steadily increased over the past year after collaborating with burgeoning talents like D Smoke on “Champion” and established stars such 6lack on “Sere.” By this time next year, he could very well be one of the can’t-miss talents from his home country who are leading Afrobeats’ mainstream takeover, joining such stars as Davido and Wizkid at the forefront of the genre’s globalization.

Ed Sheeran Briefly Sings In Yoruba With Fireboy DML For A Remix Of ‘Peru’

There are plenty of records released this year in the afrobeats world that helped to boost the genre’s worldwide appeal. Whether it was Wizkid and Tems’Essence,” which was later remixed by Justin Bieber, or Ckay’s “Love Nwantiti,” the amount of songs that appear on this list is far from short. Fireboy DML’s “Peru” is another track that can be found here and it’s one the singer released after dropping his second album Apollo during the summer of 2020. In a matter of months, the track’s lyrics were being belted out by afrobeats lovers all over the world. Today, it receives a new remix from quite the big name.

Ed Sheeran steps into the afrobeats world to deliver a remix of “Peru.” It’s a new take that the two singers have been teasing for a few weeks and now it’s finally here. On it, Sheeran shows off his bilingual skills as he briefly sings in Yoruba on the track. The new remix sees Fireboy DML leading the way with his original verse before Sheeran steps in for a fresh verse.

The updated version of “Peru” arrives after Sheeran hit a one-of-a-kind milestone. His 2017 track “Shape Of You” became the first song on Spotify to reach 3 billion streams. After learning about the feat, he thanked fans and said he’s “really, really chuffed with it.” He added, “We’ve had a really great ten years together and hopefully we have a great ten years more.”

6lack Accompanies Spinall And Fireboy DML For A Remix Of Their Summery Track, ‘Sere’

While his own artistry is absolutely something to recognize and appreciate, 6lack’s ability to stand beside a variety of artists no matter the genre is another quality that makes him great. In just the past few months, the Atlanta-born singer — who switches hats to rap on songs at times — has worked with the likes of JID, Lil Durk, Lil Tay, and Melii.

As he’s done a few times in his career, 6lack returns to the afro-fusion lane for a remix of Spinall and Fireboy DML’s “Sere.” The summery track takes life on Spinall’s 2020 album, Grace, and with 6lack’s addition, the song gets a nice boost without moving away from its original structure.

As of late, 6lack’s been a busy man. In addition to providing great guest features on a number of tracks, he singer stood by his fellow LVRN labelmates for a hard-hitting Rap Caviar cypher. With OMB Bloodbath leading the way, new names to the roster like NoonieVsEverybody and BRS Kash followed suit with confident verses of the own.

Next, the more familiar names of the label, Westside Boogie and 6lack himself, delivered bars of their own. Boogie’s verse focused on his fame and how it impacted his life and the lives of his homies while 6lack’s own was a slick-lipped contribution filled with enough metaphors to remind you of his original rap upbringing.
