Chadwick Boseman’s Legacy: Iconic Role After Iconic Role

It’s been two and a half years since Chadwick Boseman tragically passed away. Colon cancer claimed his life, a battle he was fighting for years without anyone’s knowledge.

Through that time, and prior to his diagnosis, the legendary actor took on a few iconic roles. In terms of sheer volume of iconic and fitting characters, no actor has had more than Boseman.

On and off the screen, the Black Panther star was a legend. He inspired many in different ways and the word tragedy doesn’t begin to do his passing justice. From T’Challa to Thurgood Marshall, Boseman’s filmography is filled to the brim with incredible performances.

While his life and acting career were cut short, his filmography certainly isn’t lacking for excellence.

Chadwick Boseman acting: The best on-screen appearances for the late actor

Boseman’s first role came in All My Children in 2003. His first big role came in Persons Unknown in 2010. In 2013, the world at large was introduced to Boseman’s talents in 42, the story of the legendary Jackie Robinson.

Coincidentally, that’s still one of the actor’s best performances yet. It is a huge undertaking to play someone who lived a real life. It’s even harder to portray someone as important and legendary as Robinson.

Boseman, despite being fairly inexperienced at the time, stepped into the role with confidence and delivered an exceptional performance. The world saw the Jackie Robinson story through Robinson’s own eyes.

He instilled in his character the struggles Robinson undoubtedly went through. The anger, the frustration, the disappointment and everything the star baseball player went through was palpable on screen.

It’s very possible that he doesn’t land other iconic roles without acing Jackie Robinson, so it was a monumental film for a lot of reasons. 42 was a good movie, but it almost certainly wouldn’t have been with a different actor standing in Robinson’s cleats.

Black Panther: A role Chadwick Boseman was born for

Chadwick Boseman appeared on screen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for the first time in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War. He portrayed the Black Panther and a character who was suddenly forced to lead his country after his father’s murder.

Boseman’s T’Challa was arguably the best and most interesting character in what amounted to a psuedo-Avengers film. Acting alongside Robert Downey Jr., Don Cheadle, Chris Evans and others, that’s no small feat.

He went on to star in his own film, titled after T’Challa’s alter ego the Black Panther. The film was a critical and commercial success, showing studios and audiences alike that black superheroes were not only interesting, but they were profitable, too.

Boseman played T’Challa with the regality of a lifelong monarch and inspired the world in the process. He reappeared as the character in both Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers Endgame. It’s an absolute shame he wasn’t able to star in the sequel, though Ryan Coogler and company did a tremendous job honoring him with the movie.

His final acting credit came from the Marvel show What If…? which revisited Marvel storylines where one thing was different. Fittingly, he voiced T’Challa one more time as his final appearance on a screen.

Chadwick Boseman acting in iconic films is nothing new

If those two roles weren’t enough, Boseman also played the legendary Thurgood Marshall in Marshall from 2017. Yet another real life hero whose story was translated to the big screen with grace and passion thanks to Boseman.

In 2014, fresh off the success of 42, Chadwick Boseman once again stepped into someone’s real life shoes. He portrayed James Brown in Get On Up and received praise from critics and audiences alike.

Da 5 Bloods from Spike Lee isn’t a true story, but it’s one rooted in the reality of what happened to black soldiers in Vietnam. Boseman’s performance received praise as they usually do.

In his final live action role, Boseman graced the screen for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, a role he was nominated for Best Actor for. He ultimately lost the posthumous award to Anthony Hopkins.

Boseman also appeared in movies such as 21 Bridges, Message from the King, Gods of Egypt and Draft Day. His filmography is admittedly small, undoubtedly missing more iconic roles he would have suited up for had he not passed away.

It’s sad to think about what roles he might have landed and what movies he would have improved with his presence.

However, what it lacks in size it makes up for in power. These roles are a lifetime’s worth of legendary characters and Boseman was able to portray them all in a 10-year run.

Chadwick Boseman acting will be remembered forever. This is partially due to his tragic passing, but mostly due to the fact that he played iconic roles with perfection. What’s perhaps even more impressive is that as great as he was on-screen, he was just as good if not better off of it.

What Is Kanye West’s Net Worth?

At this point, we’re all well aware of Kanye West consistently being in the headlines over the past few years. More often than not, these headlines haven’t been music-related. Whether it be his controversial comments or wild business decisions, it’s difficult to pinpoint what move Ye may make next. However, there’s no denying his ambition as a creative in a variety of lanes. From fashion to music, the majority of his net worth has come from his various clothing deals with Fortune-500 brands. However, that reputation has come to a grueling halt over the past year.

We’ve heard next to nothing on the musical front from Ye. Since releasing ‘Donda 2’ at the outset of 2022, he appears to have gone on a hiatus. However, a track titled “Someday We’ll All Be Free,” an unreleased snippet seeing Ye address his controversy, was circling around the Internet in December of last year. Speaking on his fallout with Kim Kardashian and his anti-Semitic comments, he’s unapologetic about his actions. While we’ve heard snippets or unreleased cuts, it appears that his focus has shifted amidst swirling controversies and fallouts.

2022 Was a Rough Year for Ye

Kanye West aka Ye is seen on October 28, 2022 in Los Angeles, California (Photo by MEGA/GC Images)

Ye’s actions were questionable (at best) in 2022. The multi-creative hyphenate facing uncompromising scrutiny for what seemed like the entire year. From his public anti-Semitic remarks to sporting a “White Lives Matter” t-shirt at Paris Fashion Week, the results were damning for his reputation. With companies such as Balenciaga, Adidas, GAP, and Vogue reading the room of their audience, they would soon thereafter cut ties with Ye. According to Forbes, Ye’s net worth has crumbled over the past 12 months. In addition, Ye is paying around $200k per month to Kim Kardashian since their divorce. Once worth approximately $2.5 billion, that amount is now reportedly $400 million.

The Chicago-born rapper and producer certainly hasn’t been happy with reported estimations of his net worth. In the past, he’s claimed to be worth almost 3x of his reported valuation. However, this has never been proven. Back in 2021, Forbes refuted numerous unfounded claims about his wealth. At the time, there were reports circling that Kanye was worth around $7 billion after his successful collaboration with Gap, and that he was the wealthiest black man in the America. However, there was never any concrete prove of this net worth. Many of the claimed assets that would’ve set his valuation closer to $7 billion were later proven not to fall under his name. Additionally, the richest black man in America title falls to Robert F Smith, the Founder/CEO of a private equity firm worth over $5 billion.

It’s Been a Quiet 2023 for Ye (So Far)

It’s been a far more quiet year thus far for Ye. As of March 5th, he ended his hiatus from Instagram with a post of Balenciaga’s most recent collection. It’s unclear whether this was meant to be a mocking or endorsing of their new drop, as they were one of multiple companies to end their partnership with Ye. Captioning the photo “Write a caption…”, fans flooded the comment section with questions about where Ye has been over the past few months.

On the business end, there’ve recently been spiraling rumors about the relationship between Kanye West and Adidas. Various outlets were claiming that the two parties had come to a re-agreement to do business together in February. However, there’s been no evidence to back this up since those reports. On the other hand, the New York Post reported that Adidas is considering eating their losses from the Yeezy brand and moving on from Ye completely.

Ye’s Business Decisions are Often Hit or Miss

Kanye certainly isn’t one to marinate on ideas for too long. If he has an idea, he’s going to go for it. As a result, he hasn’t made his shortage of questionable business decisions over the past few years. Opting to take the reigns of executing his ideas, he’s proven not to be an easy person to work with. The openly bipolar artist has received criticism about his business being “cult-like.” He often makes questionable demands of his business partners. For example, he wanted all of his workers to permanently relocate to his property in Cody, Wyoming back in 2021.

From his grandeur plans for the Yeezy Campus to Donda Sports Agency, Ye has had a variety of business ventures that haven’t panned out over the past years. The Donda Sports Agency went up in flames back in October, with the likes of Jaylen Brown and Aaron Donald pulling out amidst his controversial actions. In addition, the company that Ye collaborated with to make the Stem Player come to life (Kano Computing) are continuing with operations of the Stem Player without Ye. Essentially, Ye’s comments have alienated him from the ability to work with the right minds.

Where To Buy Tickets For Ella Mai’s “Heart On My Sleeve” Tour

Ella Mai is going on tour to promote her album Heart On My Sleeve. The album was released back in May 2022 but the deluxe released this year in February. Ella Mai announced the album in March of 2022 and stated she poured her heart into it. The original album featured 15 songs and the deluxe added three songs. Separating the two is easy since the cover of the deluxe is in black and white, a large contrast to the original’s colorful cover. The album has minimal features with them coming from Latto, Lucky Daye and Roddy Ricch. This type of a variety showcases the adaptability of Ella as well as her collaborators. The deluxe edition does not add any new features.

Ella Mai has been hinting at going on tour since 2022. In a slideshow of Instagram posts recapping the year there were some not-so-subtle hints. These included her standing in front of an empty venue as well as footage of her rehearsing with a live band. In a more understated hint, she also included a picture of a water bottle with her album’s logo on it. Her listeners were quick to comment about these clues and ask about a tour. Many of them mentioned how long it had been since she did a solo tour and how they had their hopes high.

Ella Mai has announced her Tour

Whenever an artist drops an album, people expect and assume a tour will follow it. During the pandemic years of 2020 through some of 2022 this was not a guarantee. Many fans who already purchased tickets for various tours learned that the tour would not be happening. This not only left fans disappointed but the artists as well. Some opted to do virtual concerts through social media and YouTube from their homes or small venues. As time went on, venues began to open up with policies in place to keep everyone safe. These policies were worth the trouble for many fans because of their love for the artists. Recently, more and more venues have abandoned these policies and fans are able to attend shows with fewer precautions.

Ella Mai announced her Heart On My Sleeve Tour on January 22, 2023. On this same day, she also announced the deluxe edition of her album Heart On My Sleeve. Her listeners certainly had a lot to look forward to with both of these announcements. The tour poster featured the same black and white imagery the cover of the deluxe edition of the album has. This uniformity is a glimpse of the type of curated visuals fans can expect to see on the tour. The tour begins March 31 2023 and ends on May 4 2023. Ella has called this her “North America Tour” which leads many fans to believe an overseas portion – specifically in the UK- will be coming in the future.

Fans are Looking Forward to the Tour

Ella Mai recently asked her Twitter followers to ask her some questions. Naturally, many of the questions were about how she was doing or how specific songs came to be. However, there were also some questions about her upcoming tour. One of the first ones asked if there would be any openers/guests for the tour. Ella did not specify who they would be, but she did confirm there would be some. The tour poster does not share who the openers are either. Ella also shared that the chances of a UK portion of her tour are very high. She stated she wants to come back to her home in the UK since she is on tour all over America.

Tickets for Ella Mai’s Tour are Available Now

Tickets for Ella Mai’s Heart On My Sleeve tour are available now. Fans should check Ella Mai’s website to be connected to their venue’s ticket seller. An extensive list of tour dates and locations are on the homepage of her website. This makes it easy to find without navigating through multiple menus. Fans can scroll to their preferred city and click on “tickets” to gain access to the tour. They can also click on “RSVP” to get reminders and updates about the tickets as the date for their city gets closer. At the bottom of the list, there is an option to “Track” the tour which will take fans to the RSVP page too.

There are several ticket options with various benefits for each one. Naturally, the prices for these various levels increase depending on what comes with them. Most dedicated fans will want to purchase the Meet and Greet Experience tickets. These tickets are also the most expensive ones available. These tickets give fans access to take a picture with Ella Mai, enter the venue early and merch items. Fans can also select the VIP Merch Bundle tickets. This bundle includes an Ella Mai windbreaker, scrunchies, early entry and other benefits. However, there are merch items available on her website now. Some of them are already sold out.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

When do new NBA jerseys come out?

If you’re wondering when to expect the latest NBA jerseys, the answer isn’t always straightforward. Generally, new jerseys are released ahead of the first game of the season in mid-October. However, some teams may release new jerseys throughout the season, like the City Edition strips that debuted in November 2022. Additionally, NBA All-Star jerseys are usually released around All-Star Weekend in February.

So, to stay on top of new releases, we recommend keeping an eye on your favorite team’s social media accounts and website for updates.

What size NBA jersey should you buy?

Choosing the right size for your jersey can be tricky, but it’s important to get it right. The first thing to consider is how you plan to wear your jersey. If you’re going to be playing basketball, you may want a tighter fit for better performance. If you’re wearing your jersey casually, a looser fit may be more comfortable.

In general, jerseys fit true to size, but if you’re unsure, you can use Nike’s size guide to compare your measurements. It’s also a good idea to try on a jersey in-store if you can, to make sure you get the perfect fit.

One thing to keep in mind is that jerseys can be longer than regular tees. If you prefer a shorter length, you may want to consider going a size smaller.

The Best Players The Pat Riley Lakers Had

The Pat Riley Lakers were an iconic era of basketball. The legendary coach ushered in the “Showtime” era of the team and arguably made them the iconic franchise they are today.

Riley was one of the best coaches in NBA history. It also helps that his Lakers had some of the best players in the NBA at the time and in history.

His teams made the playoffs 21 of his 24 seasons of coaching. Without injuries to star players, he might have been in the postseason 24 of 24 seasons. Legendary comic Chris Rock once said of Riley:

“No man has led more [men] to the promised land than Coach Pat Riley. He may not get us to the mountaintop but he’ll get us to the playoffs. And that’s all we want.”

Chris Rock

Riley’s Lake Show was one of the most impressive dynasties in sports and it had a ton of iconic NBA players. Throughout his 10 years as head coach of the Lakers, Pat Riley coached a few of the best players in NBA history.

He also coached a few other Hall of Famers as well as a few stars from that era that weren’t quite worthy of eternal enshrinement. Here are a few of the best players from the Riley Lakers era.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar

Prior to a different Laker (LeBron James) breaking the record, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was the leading scorer in NBA history. His presence on the Pat Riley Lakers began in 1982, but he predated Riley and was a member of the team in 1975. The future Hall of Famer was an All-Star in 19 out of 20 seasons. He is considered by some to be the best basketball player ever.

James may have broken his scoring title, but Abdul-Jabbar was about as unstoppable as any NBA player ever was. He’s probably the best player Riley ever coached.

Magic Johnson

Magic Johnson is widely considered the best point guard of all time. He was also a big part of Riley’s team. Johnson is a big reason Paul Westhead was fired and Pat Riley was promoted to head coach. He was an All-Star for all but two seasons of his incredible career and won the MVP award three times.

Magic revolutionized the game of basketball. He also very well could have been the most important player to the Riley Lakers. Given his role in getting Riley an opportunity as head coach, the entire trajectory of the NBA might be different if Johnson was never a part of the Riley Lakers era.

Bob McAdoo

Bob McAdoo, the North Carolina product, was a tremendous player during his NBA career. A Hall of Famer, McAdoo averaged 22.1 points and 9.4 rebounds over 17 seasons. From 1982-1985, McAdoo was a force to be reckoned with for the Pat Riley Lakers and helped turn them into the dynasty they were.

McAdoo doesn’t have the name recognition of Johnson or Kareem. He deserves to be considered alongside them, though. He was instrumental in the Lake Show dynasty.

Mitch Kupchak

While Mitch Kupchak may be better known today for being an NBA GM (formerly with the Lakers and now with the Charlotte Hornets), he was once a key member of the Showtime Lakers.

Kupchak averaged double digit scoring for his career and was a key role player off the bench. He didn’t impact the box score as much as some other players. Nevertheless, he was a consistent player for the Lakers from 1981 to 1986. Had he not been injured for the entire year in 1983, his numbers might even look a lot better.

James Worthy

Another Hall of Famer, James Worthy is considered one of the best college basketball players of all time. Fortunately for the Lakers, his game translated to the NBA pretty well. He turned into one of the best players during his era.

The forward spent his entire career with the Lakers, beginning in 1982. He was drafted in Pat Riley’s first full season as head coach and was an instant producer. The former UNC star averaged 13.4 points and 5.2 rebounds.

Worthy would go on to be a seven-time All-Star and win multiple championships with the Lakers. Without him, the dynasty might have never been.

Byron Scott

Byron Scott averaged a cool 14.1 points per game for his entire career. He joined Pat Riley’s Lakers in 1983 and stayed with the team past the head coach until 1993. Furthermore, during those seasons, he averaged over 16 points for the Lakers.

In 1984-1085, Scott led the entire league in three point percentage. He was a 37% shooter from deep for his entire career.

Vlade Divac

Vlade Divac is most known for being the trade piece sent to the Hornets in exchange for Kobe Bryant. That title is hard to shed, but Divac was a good player for the Lakers.

Divac only played one season under Riley, but he’s a Hall of Famer so he should be included in the best players to play for Pat Riley and the Lakers.

Divac was an incredible player, averaging 11.8 points, 8.2 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game. He didn’t do as much during his rookie season with the Lakers. However, he did average 1.4 blocks per game that year.

The Pat Riley Lakers are one of the most iconic eras of basketball for a team and the entire sport. Thanks to Riley’s leadership, some of these players ended up better than they would likely have been.

Still, Riley had the benefit of coaching what turned out to be quite a few Hall of Famers. That can really only help a coach look better. He’s a Hall of Fame coach. He’s one of the best executives this league has seen, too. Pat Riley was an unbelievable basketball mind and it showed in his coaching.

SZA, Crocs, And The Triumphant Return Of Y2K

Did you ever sit back, look at your feet and think… “How do I make these feet look more Y2K?” Okay maybe not. I understand it’s a bit of a random thought to have, but leave it to the reigning queen of Top Dawg Entertainment to be able to predict that the future was going to be all about the past. Sza x Crocs came together in a legendary collaboration a few months ago to create two signature style ways that look like they came straight from the dawn of the 2000s.

Fashion is cyclical. As time goes forward, we watch as the new generation of consumers with expendable income longs for the nostalgia of the past – and the 2020s are no different. The millennials and Gen Z’ers are longing for the simpler times. The times where all we had to worry about was if our Tamagotchi was alive in between classes, and whether or not the entire computer network grid was going to catastrophically crash at the stroke of the millenia. Sza x Crocs have tapped into that nostalgia with their latest creations.

Now by this time, you may be asking yourself “what do Y2K feet look like exactly” and before we just drop the imagery, we want to try to paint the picture.

Introducing: The Sza X Crocs Collab

The Sza x Croc collab looks like they belonged on the feet of Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears as the then couple walked the red carpet of the MTV awards. Does that help? The infamous pair wore even more infamous – and matching – outfits. Are you starting to get the vision? In 2001 JT and Britney made one hell of a statement by showing up in head-to-toe denim suits adorned in Swarovski crystals and acid wash.

The Texas Tuxedo. The Dynamic Duo. Whatever you wanted to call it, denim on denim on denim was the vibes back then, and Sza is grabbing the Delorean and taking us back in time. Available in the traditional clog style is the “Crush” but with a platform style heel for added oomph, or in a dual-strap “Cozzzy” Birkenstock-esque buckle slide version. Both come with ultra soft, faux fur lining for a little added luxury and comfort.

As is tradition with Crocs, the Sza collab also features a collection of Jibbitz (you know, the little charms that you can stick on top for added flair) that come in iconic Y2K styles. Floppy disks, flip phones, puka shells, and macaroni noodles among others.

With the collection coming out a bit before her last album dropped, they’ve been sold out since before they came out, and remain sold out on the official Crocs website. Calling around to local shoe stores in the area that carried Crocs proved the same. They’re near impossible to get your hands on, and your best bet for trying to score a pair is off a website like StockX or Poshmark. Due to the high demand, it’s almost a guarantee that resellers are going to double the original asking price ($75 and $80 respectively).

Who Is Crocs going to collaborate with next?

The recent collaboration marks the second one that Sza x Crocs have embarked on, and considering the success, I can only imagine more will be on the horizon. Crocs has managed to come out of the proverbial mud and transform themselves from a clunky garden shoe meant for digging in the dirt into a high-profile streetwear brand in a way that is almost mind boggling. Not only does their list of artists’ collabs continue to grow, but it manages to cross boundaries and genres to find a place for any and everyone.

From musical powerhouses like Bad Bunny, Sza, Diplo, Post Malone, and Justin Bieber; to high-end fashion houses like Balenciaga, Takashi Murakami and Barney’s New York, the choices Crocs seem to make on their partnerships don’t miss. Each iteration has not only immediately sold out upon release, but has required a lottery system just to get the chance to purchase them.

Like most anomalies in streetwear, the exponentially growing success of Crocs may have a plateau – but at the moment, it seems like the sky’s the limit.

Everything We Know About 6lack’s Next Album

After five years 6LACK (or 6-LACK depending on who you ask) broke his veritable radio silence by dropping the title track off his forthcoming album Since I Have a Lover. Reaching over 500k streams on Youtube in less than a week, if the album performs anything like the single, three time Grammy award nominee 6lack is destined for another hit.

But what do we actually know about the new album? 6lack hasn’t given us much to go on, but if we want to talk about what we know about the album, let’s take a look at everything we already know about the artist himself.

6LACK manages to quietly fly under the radar, with very little by way of social media fodder, online scandals, or whispered gossip. He’s made songs with a variety of artists that range in genre and style – everyone from The Weeknd (who is no stranger to online scandals, if you’ve been paying attention lately) and J. Cole, to Jessie Reyez and T-Pain. His lyrics are a mixture of emotionally raw, with a tinge of dark sexuality and boastful brags. He manages to effortlessly flow between gentle and melodic to a little aggressive, and he does it all in a way that still manages to touch on a topic that music felt like it was lacking in: Love.

‘Since I Have A Lover’ Is Full of ‘Good Moods’

Since I Have A Lover is going to be an album that does all that and more.

“It’s all my good moods compressed into song format,” 6lack commented, “and I hope it makes you feel.”

If the title track of the album is any indication of what we can expect from the forthcoming album, what we can anticipate is an album that combines the ethereal warble and scratchy undertone that 6LACK is famous for with backing music that sounds effortlessly upbeat. The visual for the song begins with 6LACK falling from the sky until he crash lands into an house long abandoned. The singer crash lands, surrounded by the rubble of things freshly fallen apart. As he emerges from the wreckage and begins searching through the dilapidated hallways, he finds the doorway – and suddenly exits into a world sun soaked and full of life, color, and energy. 6LACK spends the rest of the video literally floating through the streets of Atlanta. The video ends with a transition into what we can only assume is a teaser for another song off the album.

6LACK’s crash landing in the video seems to act as a response to his meteoric rise to fame, following the old adage that one goes up must, inevitably, come down.

The singer came out of seemingly nowhere in 2017 – though if you know 6LACK’s history, you’re aware that his struggle to the top was a long time coming. His debut album Free 6LACK hit #5 on the Billboard rap charts, and earned him two Grammy nominations for best urban contemporary album, and best rap/sung performance for the song PRBLMS.

There Is A Tour Following This Release

While 6LACK and his management are keeping the album, and any spoiler alerts, tightly under wraps until it’s release on March 24th, I’m willing to bet money that this latest album will show an even more introspective side than we’ve seen from 6LACK – yet one that has a positive thread interwoven through each song.

If it makes you feel better, it isn’t just fans that are anxiously awaiting 6LACK’s return. Christopher Patterson, 6LACK’s tour manager, is just as excited about it. When I asked him about the album, he had little to say about what was to come – but he knew one thing was for sure. “I’m just ready to tour!”

Review: Untrapped: The Story Of Lil Baby

Untrapped: The Story of Lil Baby is a documentary about how the Atlanta rapper built his rap career and the things he went through while building it. He went from being a prominent name in the Atlanta streets to the Atlanta music scene. For Lil Baby, his connections to the Atlanta figures like Young Thug, Gunna and Coach K of Quality Control all had a role in taking his name to where it is today. His documentary chronicles his journey through behind-the-scenes footage spanning from his childhood to visiting his neighborhood after making it to the night he performed at the GRAMMYs.

Lil Baby’s documentary is built around how other people supported him and their roles in his journey. Young Thug and Quality Control founders Coach K and P talk about how they believed in him as a rapper and as a person. Journalist Charles Holmes talked about how his background contrasted with Lil Baby in every way but they still had an excellent interview. Drake talked about how he is one of the biggest voices of the current generation of rap. Additionally, his Mom talked about how she always knew he was different from his peers. Everyone around him was rooting for him and that pushed him to bigger and bigger opportunities and experiences.

Lil Baby’s Atlanta Connections Started His Rap Career

In Untrapped: The Lil Baby Story, we learn something surprising about the Atlanta rapper: he didn’t really want to be a rapper. He had an established name in the streets and with that came a reputation. Lil Baby was confident people already knew who he was and respected him. Also, He also knew the money he was making in the streets was quick and did not require the work that being a rapper did. Fellow Atlanta rapper Young Thug wanted him off the streets and would literally pay him to stay off of them. He saw Lil Baby’s talent and wanted to steer him towards that more. However, Lil Baby was more concerned with his reputation and thought it would be tarnished if he left the streets to pursue rap.

Lil Baby regularly visited Quality Control, a prominent rap label in Atlanta. He enjoyed just hanging out there and knew the people there well. Founders Coach K and P saw something special in Lil Baby and wanted to give him a better path. They saw the fact he had a reputation in the streets was the reason he should pursue the rap career. People would already know his name and be interested and invested in the music he was making. Coach K and P told him once he got out of jail he could sign to Quality Control and that’s exactly what he did.

His Hits were Organic

Lil Baby’s song “My Dawgs” was the first one that really took him to the next level. In the documentary, there was footage of small but supportive crowds singing the song word-for-word. The song resonated with people because of the things he was talking about and the authenticity behind them. Furthermore, “Drip Too Hard” was an even bigger hit because it featured another Atlanta artist that was on the rise – Gunna. In the doc, there was footage of him and Lil Baby performing the song at different music festivals. These crowds were even bigger than the previous ones and were giving the same amount of energy. Seeing this amount of growth in such a short period of time was very motivational to see. Lil Baby committed to the rap life even though he was skeptical of it initially and it paid off.

“The Bigger Picture” was one of the biggest songs in his career. In the documentary, there was social media footage and soundbites of people saying he was hard to understand. The CEO of Motown Records, Ethiopia Habtemariam, stated this is actually common with artists from Atlanta. This song forced these listeners to put this perspective to the side and truly focus on his words. During this portion of the documentary, footage of the pandemic was shown which included people marching/protesting while masked up. Lil Baby was amongst these people as he shot the music video for the song. He stated that he wanted to talk about what was currently happening across America. He also wanted to acknowledge black people dying from police violence is an ongoing issue. His own interactions with police played a role in the song’s formation too.

Lil Baby Respects Where He Came From

In the beginning of the documentary there is footage of Lil Baby as a child with his siblings playing in his neighborhood. After that, it cuts to Lil Baby’s children and offers a shift in perspective. He states he wants to have a real relationship with his children since he didn’t have one with his father. Later, he discussed being able to help people he knows from his neighborhood and there was footage of this as well. Seeing him drive his sports car through his old neighborhood was inspiring because without it he wouldn’t be doing that in the first place. In the final moments of the documentary he says “I’m tryna show them youngins that it’s bigger. I’m living proof…I’ll never be trapped again” Lil Baby’s documentary is a testament to the payoff a change in lifestyle can bring.
