[WATCH] Teyana Taylor Shares She Was Disappointed Pharrell Didn’t ‘Protect Her’ As His Teen Artist

Screen Shot 2023 04 25 at 9.15.30 AM

Teyana Taylor recently shared how she was disappointed with how little Pharrell pushed for her success when she was signed to him early on in her career.

The R&B singer inked a deal with Pharrell’s Star Trak imprint back in 2007 when she was just 15 years old. Teyana released From a Planet Called Harlem while signed to Star Trak, but said she negotiated her way out of her deal in 2012 because she wanted a certain level of creative independence within the industry. Taylor then joined up with Kanye West’s G.O.O.D. Music.

In a recent interview with Angie Martinez’ IRL podcast, Taylor said there was a time during her tenure at Star Trak that she was frustrated by the way Pharrell handled her career.

“Getting signed to a man, it was like a figure to me … I looked at these people like figures. Whether it was as a dad, as a brother, it didn’t matter. So it’s like, you didn’t see me, you didn’t hear me, you didn’t protect me. you kind of just like fed me to the wolves type-shit without probably even knowing,” she told Martinez. “Some of those conversations still need to be had.”

She continued: “I had a really, really, really, really deep and honest conversation with Pharrell, because, you know, he was the first person to sign me. He was Skateboard P, I was Skateboard T. You cannot tell me that wasn’t my pops. I really looked up to him. He didn’t have kids at the time, and he wanted kids. He’d be like, ‘Yo, she call me her pops.’ He was really proud of that.”

She went on to say that she was like Pharrell’s “baby twin,” but that as her career progressed he didn’t do much to elevate her to the next level.

“He’s not confrontational at all. He’s literally one of the sweetest people in just the whole wide world, you know what I’m saying? So, it wasn’t that he didn’t protect me, it’s just that a lot of hands started going into the cookie jar … it’s P, he not ’bout to be like. ‘No, y’all n-ggas back up,’” she explained

“Maybe he was hurt about some things. You don’t know. It could’ve been a thing of pride and ego at the time. We don’t know. To me, as a 15-year-old, it was, you didn’t protect me. You let everyone mishandle me. I signed to you. You let everybody get in the way and everybody break us apart. You didn’t protect me.”

Fast forward to the 30:14 mark to hear her feelings about Pharrell.

Today In Hip Hop History: Mobb Deep’s Classic ‘The Infamous’ LP Released 28 Years Ago

Screen Shot 2023 04 25 at 7.15.30 AM

Much more successful than their debut, The Infamous is hailed as a New York classic. Its gritty underground style is a staple in the hardcore movement going on at this time in New York. This album helped New York Hip Hop separate itself from the mediocre backpacker style that was popular a few years prior. Havoc and Prodigy‘s production shaped a new sound that could separate them from any NYC crime rhymer at the time.

Helping to pave the way for future artists like The Diplomats or A$AP Mob, The Infamous promoted a sound a lifestyle that appealed to a side of New York that wasn’t being spoken to or about by the politically charged artists that came in the late 80s and early 90s. Much like Wu-Tang Clan’s Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers), Mobb Deep acted as street prophets, spitting the truths of the hood without trying to be outwardly righteous about it. Featuring artists like Ghostface Killah, Nas, and Q-Tip, this project is a titan among its peers.

The album was a commercial success debuting at #15 on the Billboard 200 and #3 on the R&B/Hip Hop charts. The album was certified gold within the first month of its release, and the three singles from the project all made appearances on the Billboard Hot Rap Singles chart, with “Shook Ones Pt. II” and Survival of the Fittest” both making it on to the Billboard Hot 100.

Suge Knight Alleges Snoop Dogg Obtained Death Row Records By Fraud

Screen Shot 2023 04 24 at 11.46.42 PM

Last year, West Coast rap icon Snoop Dogg announced that he was the new owner of the legendary, yet infamous Death Row Records, however, the label’s former owner Suge Knight says that :”Tha Row” has fraudulently fallen into the hands of the Doggfather.

In February, Snoop acquired the imprint through MNRK Music Group (formerly eOne Music), but in an exclusive interview with TMZ, Knight claims that the deal was totally illegal.

In an interview given from a California State Penitentiary where he is serving 28 years for manslaughter, Suge says the original owner and proprietor of Death Row Records Michael “Harry-O” Harris committed bankruptcy fraud to get the company from him.

Suge contends that Snoop was only able to acquire the label because it was forfeited when a lawyer failed to attend a court proceeding, prompting a default judgement that transferred it into the possession of MNRK in 2013.

Knight doubts the legitimacy of the deal, saying, “First of all, you gotta look at it like this: I am Death Row. So I’m quite sure when it’s said and done, [2Pac’s] All Eyez On Me and Makaveli will definitely come back to me, and the rest of the stuff.”

He added, “But one problem with that is: Snoop has a partner, which is Michael Harris. They committed fraud, they bankruptcy fraud. I didn’t lose my company by doing anything wrong; they went in and the lawyer didn’t show up, and they got a default judgement. I settled the judgement. They turned around and said I didn’t settle the judgement. But they committed bankruptcy fraud which we just found out for sure last week. When they filed for bankruptcy in ’95, they said it didn’t have anything to do with Death Row.”

Why Did SZA Pick Her Name?

SZA’s name is engrossingly as iconic as The Lion King‘s “Mufasa” (and the fricatives have it!). The extraordinary potential of the name might just be something she puzzles out daily from fresh perspectives. Indeed, she has given us a solid breakdown of “S-Z-A”; however, she seems welcoming of its open-ended nature. She resolved, for instance, that the “S” can stand for “Sovereign” or “Savior.” In other words, she has permitted our moods to choose either inconsistently. Any admirer or critic would discover so much from exploring beyond the individual letters. The alphabetic triad makes more sense as a whole, even though it’s connoted otherwise. We’ll get to that, but first, let’s see what SZA herself has said about her stage name.

Origin Story

The acclaimed singer has cited the Wu-Tang Clan’s RZA as the pillar behind her name. While “RZA” stands for “Ruler, Zig-Zag-Zig, Allah,” SZA stands for “Sovereign Zig-Zag Allah.” These intricate terms are associable with the Supreme Alphabets of the Five Percent Nation, a Black-Islamic Nationalist Movement. Though redundant, mentioning that both artists are largely religion-inclined is crucial. SZA, in particular, was raised, nurtured, and shaped as a Muslim. Incrementally, we see a woman who wires her secular interests into her creative instincts without discarding her faith. We’ve flipped through her personal recital; now it’s time to diagnose why she picked the name!

SZA: A Glint of Poetry

If you’re unsure, surf the net: SZA is a deep thinker. Without even coming to her lyrics, her titles are so profound that they almost suspend disbelief. Hey, poetry does that too! If we’re to sit down with commonalities between SZA and poetry… whew… what an endless list it would be. In each of her songs, there’s a peculiar literary device. In “Seek & Destroy,” for instance, the overriding device was a rhetorical climax. Her precise pattern is to follow up her figurative lyrical choices with an identically-figurative title.

Strikingly, SZA has a thing for consonants, which drives us home to the point of her stage name. Although her strongest verbatim reference to the Wu-Tang Clan has been RZA, she is intellectually more similar to GZA. For a long time, GZA was analyzed to have the second-largest vocabulary in popular hip hop music. SZA seems to follow suit with perhaps the highest consonant frequency, and the count starts with her image tag.

A Self-Devised Identity

The singer grew up under her father’s morals. This, she counterbalances by creating her own value system. It shows that she can emerge victorious in a situation whereby she made the rules. We’re talking about a woman who has received a well-deserved Rulebreaker Award

It’s established: SZA stands out. She’s, however, careful never to “stand out” of her respect for Islam. As a result, her stage name could mediate between her faith and the nature of her career. She can’t wear a hijab while singing about “secretly banging your homeboy.” To make up for that, she can at least honor Allah and his sovereignty in the name she shines with. In a nutshell, SZA is a wordsmith and, very significantly, a staunch woman of faith.

“I just want to push the envelope and work, work, work,” he implored. “I want to move further away from the music and start wading myself into the acting more.”

Shakur also spoke about All Eyez On Me, his first album on Death Row Records after his unexpected release from a New York State Correctional Facility and the last album put out beofre he was killed, which he says was fueled by emotions.

“The album that’s out now is just my emotions, it’s emotional, but it’s not thought-provoking,” he said. “So I want to do some thought-provoking work with my music, and I can do that if I’m working in the films because I grow and learn more things and have more to talk about.”

Nick Cannon Says His ‘Super Sperm’ Overpowers Birth Control Efforts

Birth control ain’t got nothing on the sperm from Nick Cannon. 12 babies deep, Cannon revealed that his large family is a result of his own brand of “super sperm.”

Speaking with Howie Mandel on Howie Mandel Does Stuff, Cannon says the power of his sperm was able to move past birth control efforts.

“I’m gonna be honest, I got some super sperm or something ’cause I’ve practiced birth control, and people still got pregnant,” Cannon said.

He added, “I’m trying to be as responsible as I possibly can, learning lessons.”

You can hear it all below.

Nick Cannon has been making his rounds discussing his parenting and trailer load of kids. The father of 12 recently shared that it doesn’t benefit anyone but him to have all his children under one roof. Despite being siblings, the actor who shares his kids with six women says seeing them individually works a lot better.

People Magazine reports:

The actor tells PEOPLE why it “works a lot better” for him to spend individual time with each of his kids rather than get the whole group together.

The 42-year-old, whose new morning show The Daily Cannon debuts on Amp later this month, tells PEOPLE that it “works a lot better” for him to spend individual time with his 12 kids rather than get the whole group together.

Noting that all of his kids come together “when necessary,” he feels the “only person that would benefit from having everyone in the same space would probably be me.”

“I feel like qualitative experiences are when I can give everyone their own individual experience,” he says. “I actually love stepping into their world. Going to their sports games or giving them their personal time for the holidays. So I have no problem with bouncing around.”

Looking to the future, Cannon says he thinks things may change.

“I think as everyone probably gets older, and even as I slow down a little bit more, I’m sure everyone will start coming to me in one place,” he shares.

Today In Hip Hop History: X-Clan Dropped Their Debut Album ‘To The East, Blackwards’ 33 Years Ago

Screen Shot 2023 04 24 at 9.40.07 AM

On this day in 1990, “The Verbalizer” Brother J, Professor X “The Overseer”, Paradise “The Architect” and DJ Sugar Shaft “The Rhythm Provider” collectively known as X-Clan, released their debut LP To The East, Blackwards on 4th And B’Way/Island Records.

Produced by the entire crew that was put together by Paradise, who at the time ran the NYC Hip Hop hotspot Latin Quarters nightclub, this album helped to pioneer a movement of Black empowerment in Hip Hop culture with an infusion of Parliament/Funkadelic that was attractive to the youth of that era. Their “Blackwatch” organization, which was led by Professor X’s father, Brooklyn activist Sonny “Abubadika” Carson, legitimized their involvement in raising the consciousness of the Hip Hop generation and their 11 track, debut project was one of the tools that they used to attract their cult-like followers.

Tracks such as “Funkin’ Lesson” and “Heed The Word Of The Brother” led to the album’s mainstream visibility, however, other songs like “A Day Of Outrage(Operation Snatchback)”, “Verbs Of Power” and “In The Ways Of The Scales” allow Brother J to instruct the listeners about the socio-political issues of people of African descent around the world, but primarily in the United States.

Salute to the original members of X-Clan as well as those who continue to carry the legacy of the Clan. Thanks for this timeless piece of Hip Hop history!

Afroman for President: ‘Because I Got High’ Rapper Submits Docs for 2024 Presidential Election

Screen Shot 2022 08 23 at 8.32.30 AM

Afroman has launched his bid for President. The “Because I Got High” rapper submitted the presidential documents to the Federal Election Commission on Tuesday, April 18.

According to TMZ, Afroman is running under the campaign “Joseph Afroman Foremand for President.” His early campaign notes highlight the national need for the legalization of marijuana.

While he is filing documents to run for Pres with the feds, officers are filing documents against Afroman.

In August 2022, Afroman revealed his Ohio home was subject to a police raid. In response, the officers who conducted the search are now suing him.

According to TMZ, Afroman is being sued by the Ohio deputies after he used footage from their raid to make money. Officers are suing Afroman for the use of videos and pictures for music videos and merchandise.

In the lawsuit, Afroman was not home during the search, but his wife was, and she sprung into action, capturing as much as video as possible. Afroman’s security cameras also assisted in capturing the officer’s actions.

The officers stated Afroman did not have permission and cited that the rapper is exhibiting an invasion of privacy and misappropriation of their likenesses, leading to reputation damage, emotional distress, and more.

Afroman stated in the raid officers took hundreds of dollars from him.

According to TMZ, Afroman counted the money he got back from Adams County Sheriff after the raid, and about $400 was missing.

Now, Afroman is looking for answers because he thinks the money disappeared during its stay in evidence, and he is now ready to sue.

Afroman’s Ohio home was raised in August as the police were allegedly tipped off to guns and drugs.

The “I Got High” rapper’s home was raided by authorities while he was on tour in Chicago. The police were banging on his door with weapons drawn, according to neighbors who warned Afroman, whose real name is Joseph Foreman, about the raid before he returned home.

Screen Shot 2022 08 23 at 8.29.15 AM

“While I’m out here working and paying taxes the. Adams county sheriff department is at my house kicc-ing in my door and stealing my money,” said the rapper on his IG post. He continued telling a story about the department saying, “The Adams county sheriff department threaten to arrest me for checc-ing up on the case too frequently,” which was referring to him filing a police report for his insurance company after his home was burglarized while he was on tour.

Screen Shot 2022 08 23 at 8.30.43 AM

Afroman said, “I [accepted] the fact that the police department is not necessary here to protect and serve me a blacc man in America so I just took my loss and never called bacc. Now here they are kicc-ing in my door looking for weapons of mass destruction and 100,000,000 pounds of weed lol wow Donald Trump calls these investigations witchhunts.”
